Sunday Meditation: A Tribute To The Backlog Champions

Wherever there are dedicated gaming hobbyists to be found, so too does the dreaded presence of the backlog linger.

I'm sure as long as there have been gamers the backlog has existed but it is a relatively new addition to my gaming life. During the early days of gaming it was rare that two must play games would release close to one another, and even if they did I relied a great deal on my parents to see to it that those games got into my hands either through some set of menial tasks or a holiday gift.

After I began to work I was still mainly only interested in JRPGs and played them one after another because hey they were like 60 hours a piece. Of course when something massively important came along like the latest Grand Theft Auto that was all I played until it was played out, with friends or alone. Hype was limited to talk at school and magazines since the internet was still in its infancy. Even at the beginning of the PS3 generation I held fast to a policy of playing one game at a time to save money. Then I broke the seal.

It became two games at a time. Then three. At the same time I started getting wrapped up in all this internet excitement more than I had planned and now I've got this backlog stretching pretty far into the past. It's kind of cool to be able to play whatever suits my mood but having a big backlog gnaws at a person. In one sense having those games is a good thing because PS4 offerings are slim for my tastes, but it can also be a little stressful having products around that beg for attention while new stuff coming soon demands to get noticed.

At some point one has to cut their losses, which was why I once asked you all which game(s) you'd just have to let go of as you enter the new generation. However, there are some in my backlog that I am absolutely committed to eventually, some time down the road, when I have time, playing all the way through.

I am making a bit of progress at a time too, though I'm a little shy about listing all the games I own and have yet to finish. Perhaps you all will be brave and list some of yours here, or your own backlog stories. I'll be pacing my PS4 purchases, but with so many great PS3 games (especially JRPGs) coming that backlog is going to move at a slower pace than I had hoped. Things sure have changed now that there are actually more great games than a person has time to play.

I know I am not alone. I know that many of you out there are suffering under the weight of your own enthusiasm. I know it isn't as exciting to be playing a year old game instead of buying this month's latest release. So for now if you are a dedicated backlog gamer, or if you have forsworn buying a PS4 until you make sufficient progress, or if you are going to save your money and by God play the damn games you already bought then today we salute you, the backlog champions.

To that end I prepared a little amateur tribute video for you this weekend. I hope you enjoy.

Im a little embarrassed to list some of the games I have that haven't finished or even started yet, but there are around 10. Much much more if you count all the free games I've downloaded free with PS+.

For some reason I haven't been playing much for the last year but I'm back in action now.

My backlog is pretty big too. I'm frequently stuck in gamer limbo, as I usually have too much to play but no idea where to start. Also I almost never have enough to acquire the remainder of my backlog of over a hundred titles I still don't own, and at least 20 games I do own I've still not completed to my liking...

Also, unrelated, but it's good to be back. My computer died and I only was able to get this laptop last week. How much have I missed, I wonder... Probably a lot. Anyways, it's good to see this place hasn't changed too much.

Up until recently I'd play only one game at a time.. Then I got a 3DS and PS+. I tried all of the + games and I intend to play many of them, but Bioshock Infinite tookpprecedence. Now I have this really nice looking Tales of Xillia ($10!) icon staring at me whenever I turn my PS3 on.. Its rough, cuz now I have Bravely Default on the way and I haven't even finished Fire Emblem yet. So I have a month to try to get through all of that before I have to drop it all for South Park, then soon after Yoshi's New Island..

If i had to give advice id say pace yourself and not start games you can't finish. And play the shorter ones first.

Cleaning up the backlog is extremely satisfying, even if the game is not very good. After finishing Soul Sacrifice and A Link Between Worlds this past week, I've finally been able to make serious progress in Vagrant Story, Xenogears, and I even popped in Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus for the first time in over a year. I will make as much progress as I can until Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD releases, when everything will be shoved aside once again. There are no breaks for a gamer.

I still typically play only one game at a time and if I get interrupted in the middle of one for something hot and new that I MUST play, I typically restart. Pretty bad form, really, but it works for me. I've pretty much decided that this year will be about getting rid of my backlog (that decision is aided by going to uni and being nigh on broke). Anyway, for the first semester I'm taking the ME trilogy, Fallout 3, Spec Ops: The Line, Beyond: Two Souls, NieR, Castlevania: LOS and Darksiders (I think that's all). I'll probably also get a couple more games on the list if I can get 'em for like, $30 or less, like Sly 4, Tales of Xillia or GoW: Ascension.

Second half of the year, I'm already planning to go through the AC series (up to 3), RE6 and the J&D Trilogy, but that's a long way away yet. Good to finally be entering a transition period between generations and not having a PS4. With most games being X-Gen, I find myself wanting the better versions, which can wait until I get a PS4, at which point they're cheaper. It's a win-win situation. Well, except that bit about creating a PS4 backlog in advance...

Funny how I barely recognized a single title in your video, David. We sure do not share the same gaming past. Still, cute video! :)

I blush when I see my stack of PS3 games, and blush even more when I realize that over the years I've even traded in a lot of games.

And then I feel regrets. It was a time when I jumped on every sales campaign. I was a slave on Amazon and Play. Jumped on every hype, bought every major release.

So my backlog can just as well be dubbed my "wall of shame". But I've learned.
... I hope.

@Beamboom: Haha. All I can say is me too. I used to scour the net for bargains on titles I wanted to play, or get the best deals on new releases. My family grew and my gaming time faded, and I was forced to trade in titles I never completed. And when I thought my shame was at its lowest, along came PS+. Now my backlog grows even more! At least I've learned to curb my buying.

It's ironic that when I was a kid living with my parents, we couldn't afford videogames, yet I had all the time in the world to play them. Now I'm a working dad, I can afford videogames, but have not near enough time to play.

@Dukemz

I hear ya.

I'm sort of in limbo between the two stages. I can just comfortably afford any upcoming releases/Collectors' I want to follow BUT I sssort of shouldn't play them - depending on how much I get the study and work. Not to mention repaying loan but I'll be sweet.

Man it was only 1 year ago when I could Plat any game I wanted to sit down with. Now I don't even touch the PS3 because I locked it away at my lady's house during semesters.

I bought a Vita last year partly (minor) to help with this but 30 mins a day is just not enoughhh heh :'(

Haha oh bummer, is that so!

Now that I saw through it again I did of course recognize Infinite and Dishonoured in the middle there (I must have read the comments while they were rolling the first time), and also something I believe must be from No Ni Kuni. But the rest... I thought they looked really really old. Must be the Youtube compression.

Is that first game also recent, the one where you encounter a bee-like thing on your path and then the scene changes with a "slash" into a completely different scene with multiple bees? I assumed it was something from the PS2 era!

I seem to be the opposite of a backlog clearer. I am the slash and burn trader in'er. I absolutely hate having unfinished games on my shelf as I know I will never get back to them. Don't have much PS3 gaming time so I usually have more games than time. I used to trade in all my games as well so in a lot of cases I would be trading in games I had not even opened or had only played 20 minutes of.

At the moment I am 2 hours into Metro Last Light when I then interrupted to read the Metro novel to give it more atmosphere, then I stopped for Beyond Two Souls which I then interrupted for The Last Of Us.

Really need to finish them all before moving onto something else.

I gave up worrying about my backlog a long time ago. I just play whatever I'm in the mood for and when I'm tired of that I've got a nice selection of other games to choose from. I have no intention of playing every one of them all the way through.

I won't bore anyone with my long list of games but the RPG's in there are backlog killers. I'm playing P4G now and am 100+ hours into it on my second playthrough. This one shouldn't be as long but I started this game back in July.

I try to keep 2-3 games going at a time, of different genres and lengths. My other current games are Resistance 3, AC4 multiplayer, and Diablo 3 (when my friends can meet). Next up is Bioshock Infinite, KZ Mercanaries, Knack and finish Uncharted 3 and R&C FFA.

Agreed about those JRPG's being backlog killers (or makers). Been playing P4G lately also and absolutely love it. But wait, did you say 100+ hours?! Second playthrough?! I just started playing it and I'm only about 12 hours into it.

Well, it looks like you won't hear me complain about any lack of games on the PSVita for a long time. :)

After reading your article, David, I feel like we are some sort of gaming brothers or something. Like we have led parallel gaming lives! Everything from being mostly just interested in JRPGs way back when, to the one-game-at-a-time policy that lasted up until somewhere around the middle of the PS3 life cycle for me.

Anything that comes out for the PS3 here on out I'm just going to have to let go, it seems. I'll knock out my PS3 backlog as I start fresh on my PS4.

My new years res was to commit to games a little better. This seemed like a good idea until I got into Soul Sacrifice. It was a tough call. The final boss laid waist to my ass, but it still went to the ending credits. So I guess I beat the game?...
I was able to put it behind me and move back onto BioShock Infinite and FFVII.

The back log count is scary, You really have to be efficient if you ever want to get through them all. Walkthroughs are always helpful.

Damn, with 100's & 100's of titles still to be played in my massive backlog, I'm slowly trying to whittle them down(although I'm feeling like I'm just spitting into the wind sometimes, LOL).

And although I stopped to Play Dragon's Dogma for now(160+ hours in), I've played part way through in these games(& which I really, really, need to get back too soon also)....

BTW, this is just but a few of my backlog

Intellivision
Burgertime

Panasonic 3DO
Icebreaker

Xbox
Reservoir Dogs
Soldier of Fortune 2 Double Helix
Red Dead Revolver
Psi Ops The Mindgate Conspiracy
The Suffering

360
Fear Files
Gears O W Judgment
Halo Reach
Farcry3

PS1
One

PS2
Project Eden
No One Lives Forever
The Thing
The Suffering Ties that Bind

PS3
Syndicate
Inversion
Mindjack
Dead Space 2 & 3
Dead Island 1 & 2
Borderlands 2
Crysis 3
Prototype 2
Sleeping Dogs

And that's not even counting any of the PS+ free titles I've been adding to my backlog too.
