Ben's Week In Review: March 1

I can't believe we're getting another snowstorm. I love cold weather but this is just plain ridiculous.

Konami's response to Ground Zeroes backlash...?

I wonder if we saw not one, but two examples of such a response.

During the past week, the publisher announced a price drop for the next-gen versions, and they also revealed more purchase incentives (exclusive content and DLC for The Phantom Pain). It's not coincidental that we hear about this a few weeks after the "two-hour backlash;" i.e., when we learned that the prelude, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, could be as short as two hours. Later, many sources claimed two hours was a big exaggeration and it was important to remember that yeah, the game rules. That's sorta critical.

Still, one can't help but assume that Konami's news was the direct result of fan annoyance. Maybe they were already planning those purchase incentives, but I seriously doubt they ever had any intention of dropping the price. It only affects the PS4 and Xbox One versions but think about it: Those are the versions that appeals most to the core gaming crowd, and for MGS, that's the crowd Konami doesn't want to lose. Core gamers very likely have a next-gen system already and if they don't, they'll almost certainly have one when The Phantom Pain comes out. Very clever.

And if true, you can't say Konami doesn't at least try to respond to fan feedback. You know, as opposed to certain other companies that will remain nameless.

Where's our official sales update for the PS4 Japanese launch?

I expected to see a press release within a few days of the console's launch in Japan, but that didn't happen. We had to content ourselves with a third-party estimate, which was about 320,000 in 48 hours. No official word from Sony for the launch weekend...? Well, maybe they'll deliver a one-week total, or perhaps they're waiting for one whole month to pass. Either way, all we've got to go on is that 320,000 number: Is it lower or higher than you expected? It's a lot higher than the 88,443 PS3s sold in the same two-day period, but don't forget that the PS3 was impossible to get. Sony just didn't have anywhere near enough units on the market for that launch.

I think it's interesting that the PS4's two-day take was similar to that of the Wii U (308,570). Is that encouraging or discouraging? Hard to say, really. The Wii was a legitimate phenomenon but the Wii U didn't exactly explode out of the gate. Then again, Nintendo is still pretty damn popular in Japan, so if the PS4 beat the Wii U out of the gate, that's good news, right? Well, maybe we should just wait to see what happens during the first month of availability in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Personal gaming update

I was a little disappointed with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, so I probably won't finish it. It's just too disjointed; it's one of those games that has a clear-cut identity crisis. The stealth segments should never have been attempted (forget about trying to fix 'em, they just don't belong) and the story is muddled despite a few minor highlights. I wasn't a huge fan of the first title, either, but that game understood itself. It knew what it wanted to be. That's why it succeeded on a number of different levels; the sequel simply doesn't settle into a groove and as a result, it always feels wishy-washy.

I'll deliver my Thief review very soon, and that's another game that's a bit of a disappointment. It's better than Lords of Shadow 2 but unfortunately, not by much. It has too many technical problems - could've spent more time in QA - and it simply isn't dynamic enough from top to bottom. These two letdowns aren't disastrous but indeed, they are letdowns. All the more pressure is on inFamous: Second Son to deliver the goods this month!

Yay for the official end of summer. Cooler weather incoming, thank goodness.

I do find it a bit weird that there's been no official word on PS4 sales in Japan, though if the unofficial ones are correct, the PS4 has now matched the WiiU's lifetime sales worldwide. That's nuts. Also, the WiiU has outsold the 360 in Japan. That's funny.

Personal Update.
Swiftly closing in on the end of Lightning Returns. I'm about eight hours from the beginning of the last day and am pretty much out of sidequests. There are more, but they're the kind of thing that I couldn't be bothered with. On a related note, I spent about an hour last night taking down a Chaos infused Chocobo Eater... Man, that was one frustrating battle. Just too long and for no real reward.
Also, I dunno if anyone besides Saint saw my post earlier in the week, but I'm finally signed up to the PSN, but I don't have any MP games other than Journey and Spec Ops (and I downloaded Dust 514 earlier but haven't looked into it yet). User ID is Lawless_SXE if anyone wants to add me; just make sure you let me know that you're from here and your usual name.
And first week of uni proper. My prognosis so far is that I like it, though I can already tell that it's gonna get hella busy in a few weeks' time. :/

P.S. I want to wish Insomniac Games a happy twentieth birthday. Awesome team that has earned their longevity.

While I've been suspicious of the reasoning behind separating the phantom pain and ground zeroes I don't doubt the quality of the prologue.

Classy move by Konami not that it mattered since I am buying Ground Zeroes digitally. My MGS Series Tour 2014 is off to a fantastic start! I have now finished MGS and MGS2! The stories.........wow are they full of twists and revelations! I am 20% done with MGS3 and oh does it ROCK!! I loved the James Bond-like title sequence.

Tried Thief and I am puzzled by the negativity! I think it's a wonderful stealth game set in an incredible time period. This is going to be a massive time sink as I am totally taking my time. Thanks Sony for the PS4 as it's such an amazing console. I think Thief looks great!

I have also spent a couple of hours with FFXIVARR Beta. I am still learning since this my first MMORPG. Graphics are absolutely gorgeous! It also plays great via Remote Play! I love all the options I have with Playstation. My options are going to become even more vast once PSNow launches.

My son and I are literally destroying Lego the Movie the Video Game and Super Mario 3D World. SM3DW threw us for a loop. We thought we were done and well we weren't and now we need to find 30 more green stars. It's a great game but I find myself missing Galaxy. I am praying for the announcement of SM Galaxy 3 with COOP. Going pick up Donkey Kong Country Returns. He really wants to try the series. He sees Tropical Freeze commercials. I am worried about the challenge though. However my son is turning out to be quite the gamer bailing us out many times in SM3DW!!

ha, this solidifies my belief of M$ and $ony having a massive hand in this too.
first we get a glorified demo, obviously only happening because they know its a massive game and dont want to wait 2+ years into release like what $ony had to with the ps3.
and now its only the next gen versions getting a price drop?
seriously?
come on!
sorry konami, but i dont pay for glorified demos!
wake me up when the phantom pain releases, and both it and GZ are included into 1 package for less than 80 bucks.

surprised the ps4s sales were so low on launch in their home town, i mean come on it just outbeat the wiiu and that thing had NOTHING on launch!
you had mario who is massive there and thats it, ps4 has a whole freaking laundry list and it still struggled!
guess $onys treatment of their home people has finally backfired.........
maybe this will be the much needed wakeup call to remind them there ARE other regions out there besides the US!
as the saying goes you dont know what you have till you lose it!

so disappointing to see the year start like this!
very very few releases, than the 2 biggest first games of the year end up being massive disappointments!
oh well lets just hope infamous and titanfall dont end up the same way, otherwise next gens in serious trouble!

just started thief last night only played a hour so i cant say much yet besides i love the emphasis on light.
f*cking hate how focused on line of sight stealth games are, even if your 100KMs away enemies can still see you just because your directly in front of them.
so freaking stupid!
creates such a great tension walking right in front of a guard, through a puddle of water so you have to walk really slowly so he does not hear you.
you just dont get that tension in other stealth games!
seems like theres a great deal of gadgets too and there really useful for so many different things.
one pet hate with stealth games is you can never distract multiple guards.
like theres 2 gards standing nexto eachother and you need to get through so you throw a bottle and one leaves and one stays.
how does that help me?
it just feels so scripted, so stupid, you always have to distract one guard and then take down the other and hopefully the distracted guard does not make it back in time.
hate it when games dont let you play it cautious and smart, it just feels so stupid doing it that way and it really ruins the mood.
another thing, why dont stealth games ever let you set traps?
no, seriously?
whole point of stealth games is concealing your identity, so what better way to do that than to leave little presents lying around?
really starting to get sick of the no you have to play it this way you can only take out enemies with your hands close quarters crap!
we really need a stealth game to come in and reinvent the wheels, to remind us there ARE many more ways of killing someone silently than a freaking neck snap!
i just feel like every time i play a stealth game im replaying the same one over and over again.
ok thats actually pretty much every genre these days, but stealth much more so.

I doubt the incentives are damage control, now the drop on the next gen versions?, yep it was too high for a 2 hours game, now I may buy it... when the price drops to 9.99

This doesn't make any sense?!?! Wouldn't you have purchased it at 9.99 anyway regardless of an announcement of a price drop? I look at the price drop as an awesome thing since I full paid it anyway, I can use the extra 10 bucks on my FFX/X-2 HD collection reserve. Sweet.

It makes sense because I'm sure they gonna give us this ''Demo'' in a special edition or pre-order bonus when the real Metal Gear game gets released, now with the drop I wouldn't have to wait much until it hits to 9.99 (maybe this year) so at that price it's fair.

Oxvial that still doesn't make sense. It's been stated time and again this is no demo. You're basing this on how games tend to lower in price over time anyway. Unless you are an industry insider I will stand by that you were going to wait until it dropped to 9.99 regardless of Konami and Co. dropping the price anyway. Just wait for the price drop. I swear gamers these days are really funny.

Bro for me it's a demo, the 9.99 drop gonna happen faster now, if they didn't do this probably I would see it at that price next year, so I would prefer to wait until the full game gets released, stop trying to indoctrinate me what I should do with my money.

First, I'm not your "Bro", secondly I'm not trying to indoctrinate you with what you will do with your own money. Lastly, it's not a demo. Unless you have verifiable proof that you have played this already and can prove that it is one then I'd say stop trying. I believe this price point will stick for a pretty good long while since it was going to be 39.99 anyway. Like I said, it doesn't make any sense since you weren't going to buy it for any price above 9.99 anyhow.

So you are not a bro? well dude I just lose any once of sympathy for you, like I said I'm gonna get this demo at 9.99 this year if they didn't drop the price of this demo I doubt I would see the it at that price this year but until 2015 and if I already waited that much why not wait a bit more until the full game gets released? that's how I do things but well you must be some kind of fanboy so go and buy it day one I'm not indoctrinated by Kojima like you.

This Demo at 9.99 on 2014? I would buy it because it's tempting play the demo of the next Metal Gear this year.
This Demo at 9.99 on 2015? I wouldn't buy after a year of wait the temptation would fade away, also probably they gonna include it in a Metal Gear Phantom Pain special edition or offer.

I wonder if Thief would have pulled in better numbers if it was a third person. I know I would like it more. The first person stealth mechanic was okay at first, but now it's getting old. So maybe it's just me.

PGU: Bioshock Infinite was great! What a great example of what video games have to offer. The ending was superb. Now I'm back to FC3 to find all the other treasures. After that it's time for Fez. Still working on FFVII vita. Can't wait for Boarderlands 2!

I started on Sly Cooper 2 this week. Great game, too bad I can't invert the Y axis without also inverting the X axis. That's really annoying.

Played GT6 online as well. That's pretty fun, except the prize money is ridiculously low. Starting to wonder if Polyphony Digital has just dropped support for this game or what. They promised us "at least" one new track each month as DLC; it's been 3 months and we've got nothing. No track creator either. And as always, zero communication from PD on anything.

A game that is being possible because of the community of the great franchise one day called Socom , that was the first online game on the ps2.
3rd person tactical shooters are great and require a lot of skills.
Help us spread the word ,some people did stop playing Socom after Socom 2 because they did a lot of changes. But this game it's going to play and feel just like Socom 2 and i know that a lot of ppl doesnt know about H-Hour.

I'm firmly in JRPG land with Tales of Symphonia and Enchanted Arms. Playing them both in Japanese, though I don't always do that there's a lot more spoken dialogue than in English and it is better. Tales plays like retro, it's punishing compared to recent games.

ive read that sony put aside 2 million ps4s for the japan launch so 320k seems a bit low. i have to put that blame on sony themselves. they disappointed the fans in their home country by releasing ps4s 3 months after US got it. most japanese players most likely imported their ps4s already. i know a friend of mine did that and i sure as hell run into a hell of a lot of them in bf4. i cant prove theyre all from japan but its what i wouldve done.
