Indie Gems You Still Need To Play...?

When you've got a chance to eat into your backlog, you might notice a few intriguing indie titles you missed.

Very often, you forget about them during the deluge of blockbusters and big-budget productions that grab all the headlines. But it's always a good idea to be diverse in your entertainment, and bite-size independently developed games can be awfully refreshing.

So, which indie games still need your attention? For me, over the past week or so, I've been involved with two: Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut and Thomas Was Alone. The former is a really cool retro take on the adventure and survival/horror themes, and it's well worth checking out. Thomas Was Alone is an example of what a great imagination can do for you, especially when you purposely limit yourself to a few blocks. Both games offer very different, distinct experiences and I appreciate the notes of originality.

I've got a few others I want to try as well. What about you?

Rain and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons are a couple that I haven't beaten yet.

A few come to mind right now that I'm waiting for to hit on the PS4 or Vita: Transistor, Gone Home, Papers Please, Phoenix Rage.

Rogue Legacy is another but I've already beaten and enjoyed but would get again to play on PS consoles.

All of them except FlOw, Flower, Journey and Gone Home. Don't trust digital distribution.

A part of it is the lack of a physical medium so that I'm fully aware that I own the product. The other, lesser, part is that I'm not overly fond of paying for things over the internet. I'll do it when the need arises, but I have more than enough games to occupy my time without resorting to paying for them online, even if I am missing out on myriad top-notch experiences that can't be had with those sold through traditional channels.

Indie gems, ha! Great joke.

I didn't buy a $550 PS4 to play laptop games.

Please tell me which are the good ones. I have tried the "Free" ones Sony gives on PS4 as part of the Instant Collection and I have found them to be rubbish.

Reshogun was ok, yet again, I didn't get the PS4 for that.

I believed Sony's hype again when they announced DriveClub PS* Edition to be the first "Free" game in the PS4 Instant Game Collection. We all saw how that went.

Last gen I enjoyed Castle Crashers, Rocketbirds, Dead Nation and Hoard but I wouldn't consider them gems and certainly not the rubbish the PS4 is receiving by the truckload.

Sounds to me like your problem with indie games is that they are not AAA games....

"I didn't buy a $550 PS4 to play laptop games."

Allow me to rephrase that to my thoughts

"I am not buying a $550 PS4 to play mobile games."

It's not like we're even getting decent PC games. The problem here is were getting a flood of poor quality productions. Even if they are fun or addictive, they're a real misstep for the industry and we're already seeing leading developers like the creators of Bioshock turn to indie games.

I'm not convinced. I'm sorry, I have really given some of these indie games my time but both Journey and Limbo left me feeling unsatisfied.

This is worse than the FPS epidemic of the PS3/360 generation. At least them games had a full team of developers working on a project which is up to standard with the generations technical quality - You might not like the influence of it has had on CoD crowd created, but at least they're playing a professionally developed product.

However, with the rise of indie games this is an epidemic which really could make the industry crash. These little games sales are just unbearable. They seems to be making far more profit than main console games which is where they really hack away at the gaming environment.

I'm really concerned that were soon going to see less 'AAA' titles due to more time being spent on cheap profitable games. I know 2014 is still early days for the PS4 but the years line up is very few and far between. During that time what do we get inbetween? Yes, an invasion of indie games.

I fear the word 'innovation' whenever I read it in a modern gaming article. It usually leads to a new system I don't like, Micro transactions, VR or controller gimmicks, DLC which restricts me from buying the game day 1. I never hear about innovation in context to the games themselves anymore, which for me is where the problem is. I want games that really push the boundaries in what the industry can do to inspire other developers in the future for better quality products.

I agree with what Ignitus said above completely, I am not interested in buying a Playstation 4 for productions which do not push the expectations of the console. I'm sure (Well I hope anyway) that that is not peoples original intentions and that they get sucked into them due to the prices.

Do Torchlight (2) count as an Indie? If so then that's probably one of the best indies I've ever played.

Ignitus, it's for Windows (and Mac, I believe)

If anyone here hasn't played it, I very much recommend Bastion.

I find the Indies a bit hit or miss...

Journey was sublime. Flower is a bit dodgy on the Vita. Limbo, Sine Mora, Velocity all a bit miss.

FTL was excellent. Would buy it if it came to Vita.

The one I keep going back to is piano game Frederick. Chopin arrangements and perfect for the Vita.
