Titanfall 2 On PS4 Needs A Campaign

Most assume the Titanfall sequel will come to the PlayStation 4. Virtually no chance Electronic Arts keeps it exclusive; the company would be losing out on way too much revenue.

By the time the follow-up is ready to go, there will be too many PS4s out there to ignore (no matter how deep Microsoft's pockets are). It's why Mass Effect started off exclusive to the Xbox 360 last generation, but all subsequent installments came to the PS3. Trust me, it's inevitable that Titanfall 2 will be multiplatform.

That being said, if it doesn't have a campaign, I don't want it...and you know, neither will a lot of other long-time PlayStation fans. See, the PlayStation faithful have come to expect wonderful, even memorable, single-player experiences. Their exclusive lineup is defined by single-player triumphs, while on the flip side, it can be argued that the majority of Microsoft's success have come in the multiplayer component. My point is that while you might get away with eliminating a campaign for the Xboxers, you won't fare so well if you're trying to cater to the long-time PlayStation fans, who have different expectations.

I'm not saying there aren't plenty of Xbox fans who wouldn't desire a campaign. I'm saying that if you look at history, and you examine Sony's most successful and/or most revered franchises, it's the single-player experiences that stand out. Hell, it's even this way for shooters; just look at Resistance and Killzone. From Metal Gear Solid to God of War to Ratchet & Clank to inFamous to Heavy Rain to Journey, we PlayStation followers expect single-player excellence. And if we don't get it, many of us are likely to simply pass.

Just a friendly warning to Respawn Entertainment. Regardless of what anyone thinks, there are innate differences between core Xbox followers and core PlayStation followers.

Don't forget the likes of Warhawk and MAG, they (particularly Warhawk) did well without a campaign. That said, they look like they've crafted the outline of a pretty interesting universe, so a campaign would be a good thing :).

Yeah they did do very well, especially warhawk. The appeal didn't last but I think in Warhawks case the new games coming out kind of interrupted it while MAG, I'm just not sure. It obviously had a huge following of fans and continually got better. I'd say because of Zipper Interactive departure and lack of support there after is the unfortunate circumstance.

Haven't played the game but it doesn't seem like a good idea. I would rather them focus on multiplayer since it is a multiplayer game for the masses.

Well, they supposedly did that this time around and it fell flat in a lot of areas. Specifically, when it comes to content. Only team deathmatch (attrition) and capture point? Oh, and a titan only matchup. Am I missing any? Few unlocks, few customizing options...

At least they had a good variety of maps.

I don't know, but to me it seemed like a generous demo that they were charging full price for.

All that would be easier to swallow if it had a single player campaign though.

I love Titanfall. I'll be on board with it's sequel with or without a campaign.

but to add to that, I'd be most happy if they did go ahead and add a full featured campaign. There's nothing to lose by adding more.

Titanfall has a campaign now. When you begin the game you are playing one side, and once you complete that story you switch over to the other side and do theirs. The difference is that the campaign is done during the multiplayer matches, so everybody is doing a campaign mission for their side at the same time. They've already stated there will be no single player campaign for the sequel. Doesn't really bother me much as the campaign works fine the way it is now for the most part. My only real gripe is that you can't really watch the video sequences during the campaign as they play on screen, since you're busy fighting while they are playing.

Dude, that "campaign" is just a series of attrition matches who's outcome doesn't even figure into the "story" (you know, if you lose all of them) making It feel even more insignificant.

Why even bother?

pretty sure they're not just attrition matches. there's hard point too.
the campaign in TF is pretty much normal multiplayer but with some added voiceover dialogue trying to tell you some sort of story while you play.

Yeah, there's hard point too, I should have said mp matches, not just attrtion. Same difference though, as its a pretty lame thing to call a "campaign."

What they need is damn split screen. So sick of developers leaving out this feature. Half the point of games is to have fun with other people but now this whole 'online' multiplayer is all anyone cares about and I swear it's just an illusion. Maybe technically you are playing with others but you are really not. You don't actually feel their presence. Sure online is great but there is nothing like good old split screen with actually people around you. Jeez how hard can it be to put it in games. It was done a lot in ps1 and ps2 but it pretty much died when online got big.

and see this. see even without split screen the game could still be entertainment for the whole family. Atari knew how to do it.

To be honest, this sounds just a tad hypocritical. Every time a long time single-player focused franchise gets a multiplayer for the obvious reason of catering to the many multiplayer fans there's moaning. Of course, I can agree with it most of the time, single player experiences shouldn't get multiplayer tacked on to appeal to one particular group that the games weren't really meant for. So why should we expect a game meant for multiplayer to include a campaign just to cater to us?

So maybe you and many other playstation owners aren't interested in a multiplayer only game, so what? That just means it's not the game for you. If you don't like a game, just don't play it (well ok, in your case it's your job to play it, but that was your choice). Trying to make games that appeal to everyone is what's tarnished so many genre's before. I don't like multiplayer fps games much, but I won't ask that games meant for fans of that genre have something for me.

Which would be just great for TF2 IF the first installment had sold like EA expected and wanted. It didn't. If adding a good single player campaign would boost sales - on BOTH next gen consoles - you can bet they'll seriously look at adding one. It's about making money, NOT about staying true to a game's previous formula.

Top point Draguss - instead of trying to make all games for all people, let Titanfall be what it's great at, and we can enjoy the likes of the Order, Witcher 3, Uncharted and MGSV for SP excellence :).

it's funny isn't it. many gamers bemoan something like GoW or Mass Effect getting multiplayer, so why wouldn't multiplayer centric gamers bemoan wasted efforts on single player content.

yah, Beam. Seriously when was the last time you heard someone complaining that chess needed a single player campaign mode in order to be liked =p

EDIT: BigR: I liked what I saw from GoW's multiplayer myself. I always meant to play it more but everything else managed to stand in it's way during that time. I hope the dev continues to support it going forward with future releases. Why not increase the value of a product? Sure it's cool stand alone playing as Kratos ripping crap apart but it doesn't mean it couldn't also be made into a fun competitive "game" as well.

Destiny destroys this game. PVP is fine. But I love PVE shooting and leveling up. Borderlands was and still is awesome. But I felt like I was shooting up in a trailer park. heh. Destiny is gonna rule the PS4.

I dunno - Plenty of other games to buy for a campaign - prefer FPS games that are made for a multiplayer audience to concentrate on the MP rather than waste resources to tack on a 5 hour campaign just because. (See COD / Bf)

Similarly I don't much like tacked on MP for clearly campaign based games.

good point. i long since stopped playing CoD campaigns because they're so short and redundant. So even if there were one for Titanfall, the creators of the popular CoD formula likely wouldn't make any sort of campaign that would satisfy a single-player centric gamer's needs. So I feel getting one's hopes up for some sort of single player extravaganza out of Titanfall is just setting themselves up for disappointment.

I think Titanfall proved that MP only focus doesn't always equal great successes. It's been successful but certainly didn't live up to the hype. The hype of focusing only on mp was supposed to make this the next best thing while there's a clear indication that despite only having to focus on mp, the focus certainly wasn't on delivering a solid shooter. It was more about the flash of the titans which also lacked any real cohesiveness to the gameplay.

There's a lot of reasons this game isn't in the headlines much or being talked about much. I blame it on the development team not fully taking advantage of only having to develop a mp side.

So the important thing to remember is a story mode or campaign would help nexttime. it gives players another side to enjoy rather than just a possible re hash of the first which as proven isn't truly epic. This is of course if the team can handle it. One could argue that they struggled only focusing on mp. So maybe they need another team to work on the sp aspect.

I don't think Titanfall is going to see the huge success that people though it would.

It feels very second rate. Definitely the most overhyped game of this gen so far.

I don't really see the PS helping that much. It sort of reminds me of Killzone in a way.

no it doesn't need a campaign. don't ruin a game that is clearly a multiplayer game. I have heard many gamers whine about turning a single player game to a multiplayer game. please don't try to force a company to do something that will only waste time and space on a single player version of a multiplayer game.

I'd like to see a standalone Titanfall game with JUST a single player component. Seems like a pretty cool sci-fi universe, reminds me a bit of Total Recall (the Schwarzenegger original, of course :) in the sense that an oppressive corporation has finally driven space colonial settlers to rebel.
