Opinion Exchange: Playstation TV

Morning/Afternoon all!

Ben was sucked up through a time vortex gate where he was made the savior of the universe and he is currently getting cats out of trees at the end of the world for our benefit.

Therefore I am in charge of you all today *evil laughter*. Rather than shove my opinion down your throats though I actually want to hear from you yet again in my ongoing series Opinion Exchange.

This time PSXE wants to know what you think of this crazy little gadget that Sony snuck in to E3 called Playstation TV. Some of you are probably still a little confused about what this thing is. Can it play games from all my consoles? Is it just for TV shows?

So let's just break it down first. It is basically a multifunction compact console for your TV. Its gaming abilities are to play select (see: not all) Playstation Vita games, PS One classics, and PSP games. (But perhaps not all PSP games). They don't say, but we assume there will be a small hard drive to put these games on.

It will also stream your PS4 games from one room to the next. If your PS4 is in your room with the little TV but you want to play on the 90inch 1080p without moving the PS4 you can just use your PSTV!

That sounds freaking awesome, but you know even with a pretty good internet connection PS4 streaming to Vita isn't really very good so I'm very skeptical about this. Maybe Sony knows something we don't about the direction of this technology.

Moving on, PSTV will also have PSNow, the game streaming technology that everyone is skeptical about. You're supposed to be able to play PS3 games available on the service. The pricing structure of this seems to be unresolved at this point, but I think the only way to make it work would be to do it Netflix style buffet. If you lend someone The Last of Us for $4 and then have 10 days to stream it in people are going to feel constrained and net meltdowns are a constant trouble.

You'll also have access to all the shows and music you bought on PSN. All of this will work with a Dualshock 4. Okay that's it, you've got my commentary, time for yours.

We want your opinion on this device. Tell us please, will it work, will it survive, is it brilliant, will it become Sony's malfunctioning Frankenstein that takes down the whole system?

Nope, PSTV would compare more to an Apple TV. Except the ATV doesn't do games. Whereas PSTV does.

@shaytoon - LOL You think people will only thumb you down when you are trolling?

People will also do that if they disagree with your opinion.

What do you think happened there?

I usually game where I have my console, so it would do very little else for me seeing as how I don't really buy music from PSN and don't plan on subscribing to PS Now.

I'm sure someone can find a good use for it, otherwise I don't think it would be in production.

It depends on how Sony implements the home streaming tech into this thing. I don't have a PS4 yet so I can't comment on the PQ of the stream.

What I have had experienced is Steam's in home streaming, which is pretty much the same idea I suppose, except I didn't do it with the Shield I did it with a 4yo laptop. The fact that the device features an Ethernet port is already ahead of the Vita, because as everybody knows wired>wireless. Therefore making the PQ better than the Vita's. I mean Sony isn't going to risk giving you the same crappy quality on a bigger screen and over a wired connection, it just isn't logica, but I suppose it wouldn't surprise me given the company's one step forward two steps back history. It is a nice little device but the fact that it won't play all Vita games is a deal breaker for me, as I was planing on getting rid of my Vita and picking up one of these. Guess Nvidia will be getting my money.

Thank you, I know it probably looks easy but you have to realize I have an interesting life. I have to walk my dog often to keep him healthy and I work hard to engage all people to spread positivity. I chases down an active older woman to apologize that even though she had called me and my dog by name for a year I'd forgotten hers. She was fine with it, I gave her my card and offered any help I could.

Then I saw a woman with a cat walking and I pet the cat and heard her whole sad story about losing her last cast. I had a similar situation and consoled her, we shared a religious faith and so I gave her grief counseling.

Then I came home and started on these articles but I have severe back and knee pain so I'm at my station with various TENS unit attachments and compression wear keeping me together like Robocop.

And now I'm going to strap into more gear and go back out for another walk to engage any other people I can.

You are gonna have to pay 90 bucks just for a 32 GB memory card. 32 gigs is nothing, especially if you have every RPG from the ps1 psn and many of the PSP rpgs. Which btw I have on my Vita 32 bit cards. Both of them.

If I can put my PS Vita Card into my VITA TV game and play it I will get it. If I can play every single game I bought for my Vita over to the Vita at the same time, i will get it.

Yes and and mostly yes to both. The Playstation TV which is actually known as the Vita TV in Japan uses vita memory cards AND will play "most" Vita games along with all PSP and PS1 games. The reason for "most" is without the Vita's dual touch screens some games are simply unplayable with just a basic controller.

One more thing. DONT BUY THIS UNTIL A FEW MONTHS LATER. Why? The way Sony is turning into a greed machine, don't be surprised if they jack the prices up on the games to force people to RENT games. I think the rental games they are going to bring out is going to bomb. Gamefly is way cheaper.

Yeah prices are a bit crazy, think Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition was $40 for 90 days I can pick up the physical game for $20 at Gamestop or even less at local stores.

Not sure how you get the "Sony is a greed machine" opinion. Mme cards are over-priced...we get that. But these are proprietary cards and that's how the world works. Grow up. No one forces you to buy the system. As for game prices, you will NEVER get prices from a company to universally match prices across the world. That's like people complaining that a store in your neighborhood costs less than the same store in their neighborhood. Amazon is as close as you'll get to universal pricing so please end the brick and mortar comparisons. Physical stores reduce prices to either get rid of merchandise they can't sell or to get you into the store so you'll buy more than you planned. Sony (and every other company) can't apply either technique.
Also, if Sony drops the price to match a local store then they crash the entire market and force other stores that are selling the product for the current cost to lose money by selling for the new lower cost. You really don't have to be a business management major to grasp this if you decide to look into something before judging it.

I remember when this was originally announced in Japan and I thought it was super cool it is also at a VERY good price however..... during this year's e3 I found out it uses Vita memory cards.... I really don't understand how Sony simply blames the Vita's struggling sales on the system itself when a 32GB memory card is $70 and the 64GB is well over $100 I can pick up a decent 32GB SD card for $20. Though seeing as this does more than a vita, aside from playing certain Vita games, I can see it doing fairly well even with the 32GB card it will still be less than a Vita.

I just don't understand why Sony won't drop the price of memory it is like they simply don't want to admit they are the reason for the Vita's lack of sales, it actually very well may be this reason. =\

Sounds great to me, if the PS4 streaming is viable. I'd love to be able to go to my bedroom while my wife is watching TV and play a game for a bit. Also, the PSN portion just really depends on the price model and game selections.

Eh... Thanks, but no thanks. I'm at the breaking point with streaming. Our Internet infrastructure flat out sucks. Until I can push 100Mb/s and actually have the bandwidth available to take advantage of it, it'll be more of that pixelated graphical nonsense. Should the PS4 went the ways of Wireless AC, it would be a different story. Beam forcing with wireless AC makes quite an interesting gain in performance. Wireless N, with its 2.4/5ghz and no beam forcing is a crippling tech. Especially 3 years from now when the 1.31Gbps specs of AC (compared to N at .45Gbps) are potentially uncapped furthermore by network speeds and increased technology speeds.

Looks interesting enough, but have a Vita and a PS4 and if we need to use the PS4 in the other room, it's not a huge effort to unplug and move, so wouldn't have a need personally. If I didn't have a Vita, I'd be interested in it.

i guess i thought it was suppose to be a neflicks style streaming box with an ablility to play ps1/psp/psvita games so yeah i sounds like i was right for the most part but as for stream ps4 through this things i don''t think that'll be happening but i might like to give it a go we'll see whether that will happen.

happy gaming

best thing since sliced bread, that is if it works like advertised though!
this IS the future though, no more expensive high powered bulky consoles, just small micro consoles which connect to the net and use cloud servers to do all the processing work.
for this though its a great idea as long as your net connections reliable enough, fast enough, and the compression artifacts are not too horrific.

its funny working at the new work im at for the past 2 months and seeing the internals of cloud servers and how streaming works really has opened my eyes to how demanding this stuff really is, and really showed me how far away we really are from being ready for this stuff.
i mean the connection i have at home has been perfectly adequate, no scratch that its blazing fast i downloaded titanfall a 50GB game within A HOUR!
but using the applications we use at work brought my network to its knees constantly timing out and drop outs just puts too much stress on the network.
goes a long way to really show how far away we really are from cloud gaming.
exactly why im really skeptical about PSTV & PS now, i just cant see them living up to the promise.
not yet, not the way the server/ networking infrastructure is now.
theres a reason why onlive went down the sh*tter, and why gaikai was so unpopular and unused $ony had to buy them out.
networks just are not ready for this kind of thing yet.
