Get Rid Of "Sticky" Hero In Next AC, Please

Forget all the instability complaints for a minute.

We're all plenty familiar and the good news is that the four major updates really helped a lot. I will say, however, that I've played for over 40 hours and I only rarely encountered some of the issues that got plastered all over the Internet. It was overblown from the start but that's not the point here.

The point is this: I really want the developers to ditch this uber-"sticky" new hero. In these games, the free-running mechanic has been refined and improved upon with every new installment and while it improved yet again in Unity, there's one element that really irritates me: Arno sticks to everything. He wants to climb everything. Now, I'm guessing this was a developer reaction to a bunch of candy-asses complaining that it's too easy to leap to your death in an Assassin's Creed adventure. Yes, if you accidentally hit the wrong button, this could happen.

But they went way too far in the other direction now. I have to studiously avoid anything climb-able if I want Arno to run along the streets, and it's especially frustrating during moments when you have to move quickly. I.e, "somebody saw me, I want to hide...no, don't climb on the wall, go behind the wall!" It's like all Arno wants to do is climb everything in sight and once he's up there, he does not want to come down. Granted, one of the best additions was the must faster (and easier) method of descending; just keep hitting the Circle button and you can come down even the tallest buildings quite rapidly.

But jumping while on the rooftops has become even more disconcerting than before, as Arno will always, inevitably jump somewhere he can climb. Sure, if you really want to, you can leap from too high up and hurt yourself. But you have to tell Arno twice, not once, and most times he'll stagger at the edge to stop himself. This tells you it's too far to jump but damnit, there are times when I don't care. I'll take a little hit on my health to get the hell away from my pursuers, thanks. It's just another example of increased hand-holding in a series that does not need any such thing.

The moral of the story? The next AC adventure had better not have such an infuriatingly sticky hero. Okay, end rant. :)

yea. They need to bring back the free run button, or just a button that says "hey, don't make me cling to anything." I think I ran into similar problems in Black Flag. One early story mission comes to mind where I had to chase down some dude.

Playing black flag myself right now. First time playing assassins creed game. Picked it up on the ps sale with walking dead season 1 and 2. Sorry, to the point now.... Have the same feeling with black flag. Character sticks to everything. I think I know what early mission you are referring to. I'm hoping ill somehow get used to it soon. Game is pretty awesome besides that.

Mirrors edge is an awesome example imo, on how scaling walls and rooftops should be.

I also came here simply to mention Mirror's Edge.

I've played a couple AC games, didn't care for them. This was one of the things that bugged me constantly. It was like trying to run through a magnet factory while wearing a suit of armor. There were so many auto-pilots in the game, my presence didn't seem needed.

I haven't checked in for a while, but from the article it seems like they're just now understanding that this doesn't work well.

The Saboteur had its AC-style climbing mechanics sorted out back in 2009. Is the billion dollar Assassin's Creed franchise just now catching up?

AC Unity places more emphasis on stealth action than recent AC games. Stealth action games are typically more challenging than most action games. So casual gamers are likely not beating AC Unity easily. In fact, now that we can see percentages with trophies, it would suggest that most people aren't beating AC Unity. period.

It depends a lot on playstyle and if you push the game to see the bugs.

I want them to bring back the sticky to inFamous, that was what made the city a playground to goof off in and find strategic places to stick to for fighting and sniping. Just running around free going nuts is every other game's game.

In Infamous 2 if you just remembered that in tight settings you should just roll/evade instead of hopping to get your positioning you would stay free from the walls just fine.
The other nice thing about Infamous being more of an action-platformer is that it was just generally easier to navigate all around. There was just a lot less animation and weight associated with the character. SUper heroes are cool like that.

That change made it generic. Weight opens up so many dynamic possibilities within the environment. I'm looking forward to the weight in The Order to see how it functions within the soft physics world.

Liberation? I tried like 10 minutes of that and was insulted. The game sucks for an AC game.
Just turn on DOA5 and play as Lisa or something and then jump right to Unity.

It's pretty fierce among this game. Black flag was a little sloppier than unity in movement. Arno moves along really well. It's just that running too close to a merchant's table or near a light pole that makes him forget what I was asking him to do. Dude, guys with swords and guns are chasing you! No time to sidestep and crush a merchant's merchandise!

This free climb up/down button stuff dumbs it down a lot and complicates the parkour with the intention of simplifying it. Half the time when I'm climbing while holding x, I realize he gets stuck. Have to start button mashing x while pointing different directions when he could clearly Head straight up.

Very small issue for me, though. Figure it'll take me some time to get use to it.

And yet, you gave the control portion of your review such a relatively high score (an 8.6). I thought you were way off on that one and it sounds like perhaps you're starting to feel the same way.

control is one of those arbitrary components that gets higher when the whole of the game seems to the reviewer good and lower when the whole of it seems to the reviewer bad. same usually goes for sound and replay value =p

frankly, I felt AC Unity felt relatively clunky in play when strictly speaking for stealth action games (I know AC is more than just stealth action). But many missions have you doing stealth indoors, like in ornately decorated rooms and buildings. I felt handicapped in comparison to say Sam Fisher's or TLoU's controls in both responsiveness and ability in such circumstances. I also fought with AC's cover system (where you attach yourself to a wall. it was too picky at times). Heck. Sometimes when I needed to duck into a closet my guy just couldn't seem to understand I wanted to go behind the cloth. Where instead I just walked into the hinges of the door all the while being detected by guards.

But I enjoy the game despite it's flaws. Don't think I could personally score the control higher than 8. But that's just me.

No, 8.6 is right. There's a reason it didn't get a 9 but 95 percent of the time, I have no trouble controlling Arno. The sticky eccentricity isn't even a matter of control, per se, but of game design.
