PSXE Game Of The Year Awards 2014

Pages: | 1 | 2 | 3 |

Another year has come to a close, which means it's time to hand out some hardware. :)

It wasn't the year to end all years but we always get quality, if not masterful productions, year in and year out. In some ways, one could argue these awards weren't as competitive due to all the delays (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Order: 1886, Battlefield: Hardline, Evolve, Batman: Arkham Knight, etc.), but actually, it was extremely competitive simply because of those delays.

Will you be surprised by the selections? Maybe so...but either way, it's always fun!

Achievement Awards

Best Graphics

Nominees

  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
  • Child of Light
  • Driveclub
  • Assassin's Creed Unity
  • Velocity 2X

Winner: Driveclub

For most of the year, we really didn’t see the mind-blowing graphics we were promised in the new generation. That all changed when Evolution Studios delivered the spectacular-looking Driveclub, which is one of the most impressive visual achievements we’ve seen in some time. Featuring beautiful environments and unbelievable vehicle detail, the game’s visuals immediately jumped off the screen. It’s just a prelude of more graphical greatness in the PlayStation 4’s future…

Best Music

Nominees

  • Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
  • Transistor
  • Assassin's Creed Unity
  • Child of Light
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition

Winner: Child of Light

This was a tough choice because there were so many different types of soundtracks this year. There are some designed only as backdrops to the action while in other cases, the music attempted to take center-stage without dominating the experience. Child of Light gave us that gorgeous balance, along with a wonderfully orchestrated set of tracks that enhanced the subtle majesty of the game in question. When we say “Best Music,” we talk about a game where it’d be hard to imagine it without the score. That’s Child of Light.

Best Sound Effects

Nominees

  • Destiny
  • Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
  • Velocity 2X
  • Watch Dogs

Winner: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

There was just something about the effects in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. It’s not so much that you needed a great headset or surround sound setup to appreciate them; it was more about the diversity and style. The combat stands out as a big highlight, with its bevy of gut-wrenching assaults and terrifying cries, but the ambient effects are exceedingly effective as well. This category usually ends up going to a shooter but this year, it’s impossible to ignore Shadow of Mordor’s achievement in sound.

Best Acting

Nominees

  • Assassin's Creed Unity
  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition
  • Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Winner: Assassin's Creed Unity

There were lots of great performances this year and while we’ll always love Troy Baker (Talion, Shadow of Mordor) and Kevin Spacey (Jonathan Irons, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare), Assassin’s Creed Unity stands head-and-shoulders above the competition. Thing is, with the AC games, it’s never about one standout performance; just about all the characters are professionally voiced. Dan Jeannotte (Arno) and Catherine Bérubé (Elise de la Serre) lead a supremely capable cast and honestly, Arno’s performance is the best since Ezio’s.

Best Writing/Story

Nominees

  • Wolfenstein: The New Order
  • Watch Dogs
  • The Wolf Among Us
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
  • Valiant Hearts: The Great War

Winner: Valiant Hearts: The Great War

We regret not having time to offer a review for Valiant Hearts: The Great War but take our word for it: It has this year’s absolute best narrative. Boasting top-notch writing and a great atmospheric backdrop (World War I), this story-driven adventure proves that interactive entertainment can give gamers a wonderfully written, captivating plot with interesting characters. Now, we just need more developers to understand this.

Best Artistry/Art Direction

Nominees

  • Velocity 2X
  • Child of Light
  • Valiant Hearts: The Great War
  • Assassin's Creed Unity
  • Dark Souls II

Winner: Child of Light

Assassin’s Creed often takes this category, simply due to the insane amount of attention paid to every possible detail, and Paris during the French Revolution is absolutely incredible. Sadly, the technical mishaps are too significant and as such, we give the nod to Child of Light. Such fabulous handcrafted visuals should be honored, anyway, as the creativity and boundless imagination is sky-high. Haunting and mystical, the art direction here is truly astounding.

Best Character

Nominees

  • Talion, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
  • Jonathan Irons, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
  • Amanda Ripley, Alien: Isolation
  • Elise de la Serre, Assassin's Creed Unity
  • Aiden Pearce, Watch Dogs
  • Delsin Rowe, inFamous: Second Son

Winner: Elise de la Serre, Assassin's Creed Unity

2014 saw several new characters worthy of recognition but in our minds, Elise de la Salle of Assassin’s Creed Unity stands out. Without her, the story becomes mostly pedestrian, despite the increased appeal of the new protagonist (Arno). Not only does Elise represent a romantic interest for the hero, she also has a nicely layered personality that includes sass, nobility and a bit of tenderness. She really adds dimension to a plot that absolutely requires a female touch at times.

Best Trailer

Nominees

Winner: Watch Dogs, Cinematic Trailer

Normally, we like trailers that put more of a focus on the gameplay itself but for a game like Watch Dogs, this cinematic trailer gave players a great overview of what to expect from the experience. It’s not just about fancy cinematography; it’s also about a protagonist that’s a lone wolf and a vigilante, operating in a world where someone is always watching someone else. This trailer is both effective and creepy, just like the game turned out to be.

Most Original/Innovative

Nominees

  • Child of Light
  • Transistor
  • Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
  • Murdered: Soul Suspect
  • Velocity 2X

Winner: Murdered: Soul Suspect

It lacked in execution but the idea was sound, and that’s what matters for this category. The concept involves a detective attempting to solve his own murder (hello, Shadow of Destiny) and he actually moves between the real world and this bizarre purgatory-like world in order to progress. Murdered: Soul Suspect has a great foundation and a truly original basis; it just needed more time to cook.

Most Overlooked

Nominees

  • South Park: The Stick of Truth
  • Valiant Hearts: The Great War
  • Transistor
  • LittleBigPlanet 3
  • Tales From the Borderlands: Episode One

Winner: South Park: The Stick of Truth

Not many talked about it, even after it released, but South Park: The Stick of Truth was a game that featured top-tier performances and a surprisingly solid and in-depth gameplay mechanic. Many will say it’s one of the best games of the year and as such, it just doesn’t get anywhere near enough attention. The runner-up is Transistor but actually, that game has quite the loyal following right now.

Most Underrated

Nominees

  • Watch Dogs
  • Destiny
  • LittleBigPlanet 3
  • inFamous: Second Son
  • Assassin's Creed Unity
  • Outlast

Winner: LittleBigPlanet 3

Maybe critics just got tired of Sackboy’s antics but that doesn’t excuse some of the super low scores for LittleBigPlanet 3. Granted, Media Molecule wasn’t around for this one, and we knew that’d be questionable right off the bat. The end result wasn’t Game of the Year-worthy, like several previous installments, but it still retained all its creative glory. For those with active imaginations and an interest in game development, LBP3 really delivers the goods in spades.

Most Anticipated Game

Nominees

  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  • The Order: 1886
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
  • Battlefield: Hardline
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
  • Final Fantasy XV
  • Bloodborne
  • Batman: Arkham Knight

Winner: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Several of these were actually on last year’s nominee list for Most Anticipated Game but due to a slew of delays, they’re back again. It didn’t win last year but this time around, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt just has to take the crown. It’s simply because we’re excited to see just how far CD Projekt Red pushes the boundaries, and just what they can accomplish. They have a ridiculous vision for this project and we’re all on the edges of our seats…can they really deliver what they promise?

Platform and Genre Awards Ahead!!!

Having only played CoD AW and some of Dragon Age from the list of contenders I can't really say what's best with any kind of certainty. But I can say I think Dragon Age Inquisition is a really incredible western style RPG. I spent a lot of time with it last night and it still continues to impress me. I keep getting the feeling of "man, this is just role-playing ambrosia." I also got a chance to get some more exotic members in my party who are much more to my liking, Iron Bull and Vivian.

Anyway, I do really think Guilty Gear is quite awesome and it doesn't get enough attention. It's visuals are remarkable. It's like 3D anime that looks near perfectly 2D. I could do without all the swearing though =p

I felt AC Unity was better deserved for graphics but I do think Drive Club was very worthy as well. I suppose AC can be nailed for all of it's glitchiness. Where Drive Club looks awesome most all of the time yet AC usually looks awesome when it's not screwing up (which happens a lot when it comes to visual oddities)

I like LBP3's representation. Though I'm still waiting for a PSXe review for that one. I'm also curious about AC Rogue, seeing that Ben likes the AC games more than most critics.

And, yea, I couldn't consider Diablo III for a remaster award because it was an expansion pack bundle re-release, where everything other than res and performance came also bundled with the PS3 iteration that released along side it.

I just haven't been into the Witcher games so I just can't get myself all that excited for Wild Hunt. I like what I read and see but I just can't place it in front of the likes of Order 1886, Batman, Uncharted or the grand poobah MGS. But hey, Wild Hunt could really blow me away.

Thanks for the Murdered: Soul Suspect love. I think it's one of the best game concepts out there. And, I had no idea how much love this site had for Watch Dogs.

Shouldn't Mass Effect 4 be on the Most Anticipated Game list, if I recall correctly it was supposed to come out this year. Also they should port over the first two Witcher games over so we could know what the heck is going I mean who just decides to start playing the mass effect series with 3?!

You really won't need to know anything from the first Witcher games to enjoy Wild Hunt.

You will definetly enjoy Witcher 3,its no doubt going to be incredible. However you will be confused as to whats going on, not in the loop so to speak, and for me that would ruin the experience. So you are right, we do need to play 1 and 2 before 3 so we understand the story. Absolutely intergral no matter what anyone says.

I'm not gonna fight with anything because they're all reasonable except for maybe Watchdogs winning best new ip. It has potential to be a great franchise but the other games on that list were better. Maybe it's because the hype for that game only set itself up for disappointment.

I'm surprised Borderlands didn't even get a nomination for at least best PS3 game. Hmmm...

Pretty good year 2014 was. There was a decent amount of variation which is always nice and made for some interesting choice awards here. Lots of good contenders. Well on to 2015!

The pre-sequel hasn't gotten much attention or praise anywhere. I've only played it a few hours but I tend to understand why... I've returned to Borderlands 2 instead, enjoying the DLCs.

Borderlands 2 is the peak of the series so far, imo.

Of course Borderlands 2 is the peak of the series. But Borderlands the Pre-Sequel built upon that foundation and added some cool new features. It's a top notch game and apparently is the most underrated game this year.

But I am curious why you think - after a couple hours - you understand why it's not getting much attention?

I didn't like the less gravity nor the air/breath addition. Also, so far into the pre-sequel (I'm around level 12) I'm not that happy about the look of the planet either, although I expect it to change as I get to new areas.

But worse than that, I didn't like the classes! And that pretty much spoils it for me.

The weapon grinder is so far the only new feature I can say I really like - they gotta take that with them in the next games.
Also, the story is interesting, it will be what eventually makes me return to the game.
But as of now I've returned to Borderlands 2 for the DLCs instead.

The Borderlands 2 DLC is worth finishing.

The world changes drastically and has various areas, and they all are interesting plus most reviews liked the planet although it is smaller.

The gravity grows on you and you'll come to appreciate it later on. Don't even think about needing oxygen. Like I said many times as you level it almost becomes a non issue especially when you start collecting gear that either increases your O2 or slows it down. Not only that but when you kill enemies they all drop air. Plus as you progress the areas you eventually get to are indoors and oxygen isnt even needed. It's a non issue really. You should never run out unless you stand there doing nothing. Just playing the game, even wondering and exploring will warrant you O2 in some form or another.

The classes are actually really fun. Wilhelm is Fricken awesome. If you choose to level him this way, you can see him transform into the robotic boss he is in B2. He's also a powerhouse. And Claptrap is just fun. You never know what you are going to get but he's by far the best support character in any Borderlands game. He buffs the whole team. Don't discredit the classes at level 12. That's not fair.

Big, I'm a huge Borderlands fan, it pains me to keep talking down that release, I were just giving you my reasons why I returned to BL2 instead.

But the classes is very much a subjective thing. Additionally I include "personality" into it and not just the technical abilities.

The cowgirl had an interesting skill tree, she looks smashing too, but I just *hated* the cheesy cowboy flair on her. The sounds, the effects, the things she said, the way she said it. So much so that I ditched her and started the gladiator. But the skills of the gladiator were really quite uninteresting.

The we got the utterly annoying Clap-trap. He's fine in small - SMALL - doses in cut-scenes, he is definitely a part of the Borderlands universe I don't want to be without, but no way in hell I'm gonna play as him. And I don't care what his skills are.

That leaves us with Wilhelm the Enforcer, and well, I'm not an enforcer kinda player.

Sorry, the pre-sequel didn't cut it for me. :(

Well, I think Wolf Amomg Us had more layered characters than vanilla cats like Aiden and Talion. And the bulk of that game was released in 2014. Fetch had much more meat on her bones than Delsin and even a few felt she should have been the lead of Second Son. Jonathon Irons was okay but his motivations and Hegelian Dialectic master plan were pretty predictable even from the trailers, without knowing the cause. Personally, I thought Pagan Min was quite a better villain that you could empathize with more. Also surprised that not one character from Dragon Age made it. Don't disagree with Elise, though. She is awesome.

But its all opinion, not trolling. I just dont agree. There's enough fluff guys like Underdog around that i shouldn't have to constantly post Yay Ben! comments, thought I occasionally do when warranted like the AC Unity review. Comment sections are for discussions and while I dont carry the most popular opinions, Ive been able to articulate my thoughts pretty well. And, please, no one has ever owned me here.

Underdog, still lurking around here with no current gen systems? Then you ask my opinion like you would actually know who I was speaking of. Every time Ben stops, so do you. Very stramge for a man supposedly with a wife and kids needing a pat on the head from another man on the net. Curious indeed, my man. Like i said to you months ago "Get a current gen system, then talk to me.".

Dude, just save it. That comment hardly encompasses "a lot of omissions" on our part.

And you have zero credibility. You come in here and act like everyone is just a bunch of PlayStation fanboys, and you're here to bring balance and reason. People disagree with me all the time; they criticize Sony all the time; they even bash on PlayStation games if they don't like them.

As far as anyone can tell, you never play PlayStation games. 95 percent of all your posts consist of slamming the brand or this site. That's not a difference of opinion. That's an idiot trying to prove he's better than everyone else in the room.

What you're going to have to realize is that nobody around here cares what you say anymore. We had your number a while ago. So, either be a normal, productive member of the community or leave. Nobody can figure out what you're doing around here, anyway, considering how much you obviously hate PlayStation. Oh wait, never mind...we DO know why you're here.

Kid, it's not necessarily your opinions, it's how you express yourself that is your major problem.
If you could just tone down the troll level and just express yourself in a decent manner all would be fine.

When you say "curious omissions" it implies things. It implies suspect behaviour, second agendas, something going on behind the scenes that don't want to be known.

So just tone down the troll level. Adjust your way of expressing yourself, and you'll be just fine and have a much better time here.

No, Beam. I meant curious as in confusing. For example the fighting game list excluded a great fighter from this year Jojo's Bizarre Adventure All Star Battle, not only a unique fighter but a PS3 exclusive. Also excluded was Freedom Wars from the PS Vita list. There's more but do I have to list every single line item I disagree with? I'm not Temjin , writing novels and then adding addendums for three days straight. Got too many games to play then to sit there Googling and parroting info from other message forums.

I'm a bit abrasive but I was also under the impression that I was dealing with grown men here. I get berated, insulted, called names and I don't go nuts like brighthat or get in a tizzy over a Steam debate like you, Beam. Like I said before, I can give an explanation to back up anything I say on this site. Trolls, as far as I understand, don't normally stick around to do that. Also, they actively attack other posters, which I don't do at all. I have alot of fun here debating and mixing it up every so often, but I'm not here to tow the line, be accepted, or on an active search for friends. I have those. And who is going to teach me something on this site, Beam. You? You just started playing consoles. My gaming IQ is off the charts and my collection is unmatched by most, even Ben, who's collection is only bolstered by free games for review.. That's not trolling, that's truth.

Also, I don't attack the Sony brand at all. I said recently that they weren't the best stewards over their ips, which can be backed up by tumbling sales and metacritic scores. You saying that Toshinden just couldn't co exist with another fighter on system with a 100 plus million userbase was reaching to a comic level, but it made me chuckle so it's all good.

There you go again, Kid. It's that exact attitude you display there in your post that really makes you so hard to meet with an open and inclusive mind, and see you as not just one who only want to provoke people (ergo, what I'd define as a "troll").

I mean, what on earth does my console history or the number of games in our collections have to do with *anything* about what I discuss here, whitch is the way you express yourself?

I am just baffled that you don't yourself see the relation between cause and reaction here.
Yes, you are called a lot of names and are met with a very negative attitude. But there is a *reason* for that. If you notice, people are not usually met with the same attitude as you are. It has all to do with how you express yourself, your tone.

I am merely trying to help you. I have multiple times in the past tried to take you seriously, reply with curiosity and an open mind, tried to see past your elitish atitude and insults to find your real message, and to be honest: Many times I do agree with you.
So it's not always the actual point you are making I, or anyone else should have a prodlem with. It's the way you deliver those points, how you wrap them up.

But go ahead, tell me again how I can't possibly teach you anything since your games collection is bigger than mine.

Or, sit back and maybe try to change a little bit. Don't treat everyone like enemies. But give them a *reason* to like you first.

I don't have a next gen console yet, true. Fortunately, I haven't once offered my opinion on best character to come across as hypocritical, nor have I agreed with anyone else's choice. I just think you sound stupid. But I do have a degree in theatre arts and would love to hear who your choice for best character is without just saying you think they're "more layered".

We've all heard the Shrek onion analogy. Frustrating to hear your kind of response after mocking the writer for what you felt "reads like a summary".

Most of what you said is a fabrication or an exaggeration, Kid. For instance, I never once said Toshinden "couldn't co-exist" with another fighter on the original PlayStation (and by the way, Toshinden vs. Tekken was WELL before that brand ever went anywhere near 100 million units). I simply said Tekken did far better, was the popular choice, and Sony opted to pursue it with greater fervor. Toshinden fell by the wayside, that was all.

What was far more comical was your idiotic assertion that Sony "drives their franchises into the dirt." You can't possibly expect people to think you're worth debating with when you make such ignorant (and obviously biased) statements, do you?

That's the point. All you ever do is take potshots at Sony and PlayStation and show ZERO evidence that you know anything about either. Nobody here believes you even play PlayStation games; do you get that? This has nothing to do with your difference of opinion. But nobody's going to take anything you say seriously (especially pertaining to PlayStation GotY awards) when you seem to have little to no interest, and little to no knowledge of PlayStation games.

Why is this so difficult to understand?

Beamboom, you asked a question about my original post and i gave you one. Instead of staying on topic you chose to go on about my post habits, which shouldn't be an issue for you. You can simply ingore me. I'm ok with that.

Ben, you've made those same accusations for nearly two years running. Come on, man, let it go. My criticism of Sony's franchise handling is backed up with facts. Not everyone, but a vast majority. The ridiculous part is when you claim that the franchises reinvent themselves, with NO examples and even saying that Twisted Metal failed to catch on in the seventh gen because it was stuck in the past, flying right in the face of your claim.

But that's an old argument that doesn't need to be retread. You accuse my first comment of trolling when it really was just a criticism, something you seem to take serious offense to. i said omissions, which is true, and I've listed some. Here's another: You have a trailer award that leaves out the most innovative trailers ever made, P.T., which was also a Playstation exclusive. So, another ball dropped, pointed out by the troll who never touched a Playstation console. Fact is, I'm always going to be more Playstation than you, my man. I can be critical and be a huge fan. I'm not at all surprised you can't grasp that,

You're nothing but a hypocrite.

You ignore everything I post that criticizes Sony and pretend all I do is follow them blindly. You long since made that assumption about EVERYONE HERE. Most people here, including me, have multiple consoles, have owned multiple consoles (probably longer than you've been alive), and love games across all platforms.

Your criticism is never criticism. It's just the standard "I know more than the fanboys here because I'm not a fanboy." That's all this boils down to, whether you want to admit it or not. You just conveniently ignore anything you want to ignore, including my explicitly detailed post addressing your stupid assertion that Sony keeps killing off their franchises. Your fanboyism began when you tried to convince us that Xbox had the same quality first-party exclusives as Sony, which NO avid gamer - even confirmed Xbox fans - will agree with. It's not true and it's never been true. The fact that you tried to push it tells us everything we need to know.

Just about everyone here loves games of all kinds and yet, you seem to believe we're all just PlayStation fanboy morons and you're the lone voice of reason. ...the irony being that YOU are the only one with obvious biases, and they're ALL against Sony. You have never posted one negative comment about Microsoft or Nintendo. Not once. The overwhelming majority of your comments are anti-Sony or anti-PlayStation. You can't defend that.

And that's why you don't have a leg to stand on, and why you really need to shut up.

Ben, the accusations, assumptions, and selective history from both of us are doing us no good. Its unfotunate that we seem to drop the gloves immediately instead of having a niCE entertaining debate between two guys that know their stuff and, yes, its my own fault in some instances. I come here to stay on the topic of gaming. I really do. Now if you have anything to say about my initial points and the subsequent points about omissions, I'm fine having a conversation about that. Other than that, if you dont "respect" me enough to keep it above personal attack and have a discussion, I'm truly over this thing.

Who's backpedaling? Not me. I'm not coy or hiding when I say I feel I am one of the most superior gaming minds here. And that's not meant as disrespect to anyone, just confidence in my knowledge and extremely diverse game collection. Its weird, you attempt to position yourself as an upright defender of the community you claim is so diverse, yet whenever you get a bit flustered in a debate, youve had extremely unkind words for every fanbase that isnt Sony, no matter if they are on this site. Doesnt bother me in the slightest, but i like how you can easily do both and feel justified in each role. That's Gacy level compartmentalization, my man.
All I want to do was extend the olive branch an get back to gaming. I just feel the whole personal back and forth is pointless, man. Surely, you can see that. .

You have no idea what you're talking about. Your "superior mind" obviously wasn't around or conveniently ignored all my editorials that say extremely positive things about both Nintendo and Microsoft. I've done it many times over, as the veterans around here will tell you.

Here's the bottom line: You knew nothing about me, this site, or anyone here, and acted like we were all just PlayStation fanboys who didn't know anything outside of the brand. That was wrong. The fact that you can't even admit you were wrong speaks volumes about your "superior mind."

You can't find a way to tone down the ego. That's your problem, not ours. And yes, your assembly of posts have been overwhelmingly anti-PlayStation and anti-Sony, on a PlayStation-oriented website. You gave zero respect and hence, you've earned zero respect. Done.

Ben, I've been visiting this site daily since 2009 and to say youve written MANY extremely positive editorials is quite the exaggeration. And even the majority of those you can scroll into the comments and you'll see that you completely contradict everything you had written above.

Ive never said one thing bad about the Playstation since ive been posting. Ever. That's not even close to factual. Ive repeatedly stated that the Playstation has been my main console for the past three generations. Have I been critical of Sony? Yes, even at times overly, but it's definitely not to the overwhelming degree you keep claiming. Am I critical of other companies? I am, just not here. There is enough antiMS and anti Nintendo sentiments that my comments wouldn't make much of a difference. And that's not labelling everyone here. That's just reading the comments. I have been anti Last of Us is the best games ever made, (for my money, Ni No Kuni was the clear GoTY) which to me, it certainly is not but you probably take that as anti Last of Us.which I'm not. I am also anti Final Fantasy fans begging for a FF7 remake, but why should I censor that? Just because the majority disagree? They are freely open to tell me I suck and thumbs me down. I am perfectly fine with that. The problem is you only stop for every post you disagree with. If I had written above "man, awesome list!", would you had even bothered to stop? No and that is my fault for having posted so many comments that invite confrontation. I'll take Beam's advice and tone it down

Finally, I've never once thought anyone here was a fanboy and never referred to anyone as one the entire time I've been here and posting actively. What I do think, and I stand by this, that some people talk about games and systems they have never owned or played significantly. And as a gamer, I find that heartbreaking that a person would rather be negative and 'cool' than give the game or sytem a fair shake. And this is where the "superior mind" comes in to play. If a person tries to debate me with nothing but Metacritic scores to back them up and I actually own and played significantly whatever the game or system is, anything they say is moot to me and any objective person that is reading should feel the same. You've never seen me comment on a game I haven't played or a system I've never owned, with the exception of games that haven't been released. But if I comment on it I'm certainly going to buy it or I wouldn't even be in the article. Like The Order. I've ragged on the look of that game but I'm going to plunk down my money to get that, a PS4, and a few extra games come Feb 20. If it's good, I got no problem in saying I was wrong as hell. But if it's bad, then I will say it's a turd, but at least I will habe played it and given it a chance before I do so.

Hey Ben, you may have overlooked the part where it says "PSXE Community Choice for Game of the Year 2013", but other than that, I think all the winners were deserving.

DA:I is also my GOTY for 2014 and I also enjoyed Driveclub a lot more than I thought I would (I don't play racing games.) I also loved Child of Light and Transistor, both also making it to my Top 10 games of the year. Really looking forward to the games of 2015 which are looking to be a lot bigger than last year's!

why weren't Persona 4 Arena Ultimax or Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution nominees for best graphics? yeah they aren't realistic games, but Persona 4 Arena Ultimax was not only the best fighting game of the year(waaay better then street fighter) but it had the best 2D anime visuals around and Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution has the best cell shaded visual around..

oh and how could PSX out Dragon Age: Inquisition as a candidate for best acting?.. Bioware is know for having poor acting in their games the characters get the "Bioware Face" where they stand unblinking at you and recite their words off their scripts without any emotion.

As for underrated game the real winner was the Legend of Korra game.. it may not have been a AAA budgeted game but it was a lot of fun, a decent length with lots of replay value, great combat, a good a amount of challenge, relatively accurate cell shaded visuals, good voice acting from the show's actors, a unique story that felt right at home in the Avatar Universe.. for a $15 PS Store game it was really good and was definitely underrated

BioWare is *not* known for bad acting?! I believe what you talk about are the animations during the cut-scenes, while the acting refers to the voice actors.

BioWare has quite the contrary always used *excellent* voice actors, playing their roles well.

Very well done set of awards :). Surprised The Crew didn't make a nomination for best racer, but it should never have won in any event, so that's a very, very minor detail. Big props on Velocity 2X's nod on the Vita, is a bloody good game :).

I will not say anything about Unity but I will say I completely disagree with everything said about it. It's like saying you think garbage is art because it consists of many different colors most of the time.

Valiant Hearts was indeed a good game. Better than I expected. And the ending...man.

How can anyone have voted for Witcher 3 over MGSV?!

Murdered Soul Suspect is another bad game. Given more time they could have had magic, but it was rushed and boring and had issues left and right. My biggest issue is when I see what the developers were trying to do, but it fell way short because of time/budgets. It became a repetitive mess along with stealth segments that were...yeah.

Everything else was sound and interesting though. Good to see diversity with GOTY awards. Child of light must have a good soundtrack too so I'm going to go check that out.

I cannot speak for most members here but from what I have seen is that We have a diverse community here but the majority seems to prefer RPGs over any other genre. Sure, some may consider The Witcher 3 a hybrid of Action Adventure and RPG but in most people's eyes (here anyways) it's considered an RPG.

I do understand your statement considering my favorite franchise is MGS.

I agree with most of the winners to be honest.

I love that Shadow of Mordor took best sound, it is so cool when you are playing the the PS4 controller makes sound when you finish off a group of enemies with a combat finisher. So awesome.

My personal game of the year so far is Shadow of Mordor, it was just so much fun to play and I really want to see where they go with the nemisis system in their next game.

I would have given Destiny the multiplayer award because to be honest when playing with a team of friends that game is a blast.

I am about 10 hours into Dragon Age and have been OCD in the Hinterlands. So far I like it, but after playing Shadow of Mordor the combat in Dragon age just feels weak and clunky. Still I am enjoying it a lot and I am glad Bioware took steps in the right direction. I still don't know what the flying heck they were thinking with DA2.

I'm hoping that the Witcher 3 is like the perfect combination of Shadow of Mordor and DA:I, if CDprojekt can nail it like they have in the past I think we're going to have an awesome game on our hands.

wait. how does the combat in DA and Mordor even really compare?
DA lets you pause the combat and tactically place your characters and access their abilities. While it could be described as clunky from an action game standpoint, I really don't think DA is best played like an action game. Taking your time with careful decisions presents a lot more combat system detail.

but if there's one thing that I keep having a problem with DA is in the vagueness of some of it's mission parameters. I'm supposedly supposed to be finding evidence of Grey Warden presence in the Storm Coast, yet I go to each of the 4 highlighted mission areas where bandits are, I kill them all, yet, the mission won't check off any of the locations I cleared. I wasted an hour last night trying to do the mission. I must be missing something. But stuff like this isn't the first time for me. (wait. i did do an astronomic constellation trace in there too. that was sorta fun)

@ Temjin,

You can't really compare them as they are different genres, all I was saying is that they did try to make it more action based in Dragon Age and it ends up being this weird hybrid that isn't bad its just not as tight as it could be, if it was either pure action or pure CRPG like Origins was, on the PC that is. I am getting used to playing it how I think it is intended though. Again not saying its bad but something feels a little off about it. As a 2h warrior the hit detection can be atrocious sometimes.

It just felt really weird going from one to the other, if/when you get around to playing Shadow you will know what I mean.

I found the warden in the Hinterlands by accident :
@Bigrailer

Yes I beat Shadow of Mordor, and I have completed the survival challenge, 9/10 hunter challenges collected all the gylphs and artifacts.

I plan on clearing all the weapon challenges too but after I spend some time with Dragon Age.

You can ignore the lore entirely and just play it for what it is, and awesome action stealth game with a sweet nemesis system.

The combat is like Batman Arkym city only tweaked for the better, its stealth is similar to Ground Zeroes although the AI is a little more forgiving, and it has archery which can be used from either stealth or in the middle of combat.

It all blends beautifully together and kind of forces you to use all of the tools you have at your disposal to get the job done.

If you want the game to be more challenging and in my opinion more balanced don't upgrade your HPs at all. Otherwise it is a little too easy from what I hear.
