PS3 Preorder & Buying Information

GameStop & Electronic Boutique

  • GameStop and Electronics Boutique began taking PS3 preorders on Tuesday, October 10. Depending on the location, they only allowed 8 to 16 per store, with a limit of 1 per household, 2 for employees, and a $100 minimum deposit. UPDATE: As of right now, all launch shipment preorders are gone.
  • The company's online preorder program has yet to be revealed. They expect to begin when software and accessory availability dates are confirmed.
  • Even if you managed to score a preorder, you are not guaranteed a PS3 for November 17. No further details at this time.

Amazon.com

  • We recommend that you sign-up for alerts on PS3 availability from Amazon.com. While we are not sure if they are going to be doing pre-orders, it doesn't hurt to be on their mailing list. Since they are probably getting many units, you might just be lucky enough to get one from them. Here's a link for you: Playstation 3 Console at Amazon.com

Toys R' Us

  • According to some sources Toys R' Us stores have been taking preorders months before the launch date, but we were unable to confirm this.
  • According to a rumor Toys R Us stores will be taking preorders for PS3 and Nintendo Wii consoles on Sunday, October 29th. See our full story.

BestBuy.com

  • While some have been able to preorder a PS3 at BestBuy.com during a 2 hour window of opportunity, this turned out to be a mistake on BestBuy's end. They have since cancelled all orders placed that midnight. Best Buy and BestBuy.com have a "no pre-orders" policy.

Lik-Sang

  • This company has been taking preorders with $0 down for a very long time but the company shut their doors on October 24th, 2006. All preorders have been cancelled.

Buying a Playstation 3

  • The majority of PlayStation 3s will be shipped to Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Costco, and GameStop/EB. Best Buy is currently slated to receive 200,000 systems for launch (half the total PS3 shipment for November 17), so that is probably the consumer's best bet.
  • All retailers will list the 20GB (Basic/Core) PS3 at $499, and the 60GB (Premium) PS3 at $599.
  • Depending on the store, some retailers may offer extended warranties. EB/GameStop and Best Buy are expected to have ESAs (Extended Service Agreements), or something of that sort.

Dates, Shipments, and Availability

  • United States Launch - November 17th, 2006
  • Europe Launch - March 2007
  • Australia Launch - March 2007
  • Japan Launch - November 11th, 2006
  • Sony officials announced that they are planning to have 400,000 PS3 units available at launch in North America and 100,000 in Japan. Total of 1 to 1.2 million units will ship to North America by December 31.
  • As expected, availability will be limited. But with such low preorder allocations, more systems may be available on launch day.
