Ben's Week In Review: February 8

Not much longer before I'm playing The Order: 1886! 'crosses fingers'

BioWare is right

I mean, in regards to their analysis as to why Dragon Age: Inquisition met with such widespread acclaim.

The game isn't perfect but the bottom line is that it's an example of a developer listening to fans and producing what we all wanted with Dragon Age II. It's a combination of righting past wrongs and building on consumer feedback; it's a blend of returning to a developer's successful roots and embracing modern-day trends (in this case, an open-world format). That's why Inquisition has earned countless accolades, including Game of the Year at this past week's D.I.C.E. Awards and here at PSXE (winning multiple end-of-year awards). Some were disappointed in that the game didn't have a strong enough set of characters and there were too many fetch quests, but the bottom line is that BioWare listened.

In an industry and especially in a genre where fans are particularly passionate and vocal, this is critical. BioWare gave us what we wanted and that's that. Could it have been better? Sure. But we're willing to overlook such drawbacks for the simple fact that all strides taken appear to be forward. As for the fetch quests, if you're not a fan, you love what CD Projekt Red said this past week...looks like we won't have many such missions in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Speaking of which, I think Sledgehammer deserves a bit more credit

Now, many were quick to laugh at Sledgehammer boss Glen Schofield's Twitter statement pertaining to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare not winning any D.I.C.E. awards. They basically say CoD is a decent game but not worthy of industry-wide accolades. But I'm not so sure.

The game was a definite step in the right direction and again, there was a lot of evidence of designers listening to gamers. Besides, after years of complaints, you'd think gamers would be at least somewhat appreciative of the effort, rather than resorting to the "meh, it's just another shooter" argument. Then again, I've long since concluded that unfortunately, gamers are often some of the most entitled, spoiled, egotistical individuals on the planet, and that often comes through in such situations. I really don't think Activision or any CoD developer could satisfy such people; it doesn't matter what Treyarch does this year, does it? The entire franchise has already been written off by so many.

And despite all that, Sledgehammer Games did a damn good job with Advanced Warfare. At the very least, gamers could acknowledge this, and I do think the game was worthy of at least one of those D.I.C.E. awards.

Personal gaming update

I'm not going to play any more of Dying Light as it's just not refined enough or entertaining enough to hold my attention. I'm pretty much done playing around with Super Mega Baseball and Grim Fandango Remastered, too, so it's back to Assassin's Creed Unity and Grand Theft Auto V, two games that will occupy most of my time for the next few months (especially GTAV). The Order: 1886 will interrupt me for a while but as a linear adventure, I'm sure it won't take more than 15 hours or so. I'm really hoping that one turns out to be a gem, mostly because PlayStation 4 really needs a top-tier AAA exclusive, but also because I could use a great linear quest. These open-world games are really starting to wear on me.

I'm also mildly interested in Evolve, which I suppose could end up surprising a lot of people. I really hated the Left 4 Dead games, though, so Turtle Rock doesn't exactly have my confidence. We'll see.

I wouldn't say AW is a bad game. They just need to fix the MP. Seriously isn't much fun when you're constantly getting shot in the back by people who spawn in a corner you just passed or when you unload on someone only to have them kill you with less shots. I do find it pretty lame that they aren't including the zombie mode with the game too. You have to buy it separate. Shm....

I just upgraded my PS4 HDD to a 2TB. Seemed to have trouble with it at first. Games loaded slower, more pop in occurrences and texture loading but as time has gone on it seems to have sorted itself out. I did what Killa did and bought an external drive and pried it apart to access the HDD. I put my 500gb back in the housing. Now I have a nice 500gb external drive for my Wii U. My only concern is if the 2TB fails it won't be fixed under warranty since I took it apart. Ha oh well. It's a gamble.

Been playing AW online. Meh. Haven't finished the campaign. It's okay. Not great. I think I'm just board of FPS campaigns. Bioshock Infinite is really the last one to grab me. Also playing Resident Evil ReRemake. I miss this Capcom. Majora's Mask is coming out in a week too. Gonna pick that up for sure. I skipped it on the N64 and the Wii Virtual Console. The time limit turned me off but now that its on the 3DS I can just use sleep mode to kinda play it how I want.

I guess you didn't see my message or something, I left some messages for you on that other article :)

Anyway, glad it got sorted out. I'm at 1.77tb left. Feels sooooo gooooood.

My personal gaming update:

I'm playing through Dragon Age Inquisition. I'm loving it. Although, some of the rifts are hard to shut. I guess I got to level up more. But so far so good. The game is challenging. Can't remember, but I think I started the game on hard (like I always do). This is the first time I've played a Dragon Age game. Between this and Mass Effect, Bioware has earned another customer!

I am looking forward to The Witcher 3. I don't play much RPG games. My first RPG on console was Mass Effect, then Skyrim, followed by Dragons Dogma, which I quit 20 minutes in, buggy mess on Ps3... But now I'm hooked to RPGs. I was never really interested, but come on, who isn't interested in shields and swords an dragons? This combo will sucker anyone in to the genre.

That's what you're at left? Odd. I only had 1.77 when in installed the HDD. I''m down to 1.4 after reinstalling all my games.

Yea I didn't see your post until now. I'm pretty sure the actual HDD is the same model. Seagate uses the Samsung Spinpoint in their external drives wheather it be the expansion or the back up plus slim(which is the one I got).

I don't believe upgrading your HDD on the PS4 violates your warranty. I know for a fact it didn't on the PS3.

I did the same thing, I needed to get an external drive for university so I got a tb and then swapped the drives. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be, the hardest part was getting the seagate drive out without damaging the housing.

Does that particular drive have a paper seal that needs to be removed?

It would be hard/impossible to remove the hard drive without tampering with the seal.

Yea there's a foil/paper wrap around the drive. Easy to remove without damaging it as long as you're careful.

I don't know too many people that thought AW was anything less than good. And for that matter anything less than previous installments aside from MW. But that fact remains they didn't do anything aside from a few improvements to make it stand out. What they did was great for a franchise bordering on losing consumers interest. But if this was a new franchise I don't think we would be talking about it in regards to not receiving any awards. But let me same I'm a fan and I support the direction the franchise took! Keep it up, because those are the refinements that will get these games their swagger back!

PGU: I've started GTA:O again. I've had much better luck with loading times so it's been a pleasant experience while I try and level up for the heists whenever they finally release. But this is just fill in game time, I'm not dedicating much time to it. Just trying to keep up with friends levels.

I downloaded the second episode for Game of Thrones. I love the Telltale games. Especially Borderlands. But I'm struggling to see the creative story telling in GoT. It seems like the important choices you make are not altering outcomes too much only dialogue later. It depends on the circumstance the extremes but I'm trying not to give examples for those who havnt played them yet. But let's put it this way. After finishing it I went back through and followed IGN's walkthrough to see different outcomes. They gave very precise dialogues selection to accomplish something saying it was the only way. However I did it completely different only selecting one of the same dialogue choices and achieved the same outcome. There just doesn't seem to be a variety of outcomes based on your choice nor does it seem like long term effects. Only immediate effects. They are good but it just feels not as well thought out. Might be tough to deal with set characters as opposed to Borderlands and The Walking Dead introducing new cast of characters mostly.

As someone who loves Game of Thrones but hasn't yet watched the 4th series yet, will I be hit with any spoilers if I play through the first couple of episodes? Seems logical to think the game will follow the sequence of the books/tv show but I'm sure I've read otherwise...

No. Episode one starts at the Red Wedding and is moving slowly past that. But you take on the role of characters from House Forrester, who are early similiar to The Starks. Anyways its a story line within a story line. I don't see there being any main plot spoilers from this game. There are none through the 2 episodes that are released.

Why did you hate the Left 4 Dead games, Ben? Because they were coop games?

Cause I thought they were really good!
Cool selection of types of enemies, great maps, good coop mechanics, and each campaign had a perfect lengt, imo. Not too long for a coop session, but long enough for the group to experience a steady difficulty rise and get their coop working.

All in all I'd say it's amongst best coop games out there?

Ok... To play L4D2 for the single player mode makes as much sense as playing Unreal Tournament with bots only. It's obviously not how it's meant to be played. It's like judging Uncharted only by the multiplayer-mode.

L4D2 is a great coop game, one of the finest, and should be credited for being that.

It's part of the game, is it not?

Am I allowed to review any Uncharted without reviewing the multiplayer? No. I can give it less weight, as I should, but I can't ignore it.

I love the way the industry is now. Multiplayer rules all and it's all anyone cares about (or that's what some will have you believe). Hence, if a game is multiplayer-oriented, it gets a total pass for having a crap campaign. On the other hand, if a game has crap multiplayer, it always seems to bring the score down of a single-player game.

L4D doesn't get a pass for having a full, complete campaign that blows. It just doesn't. The developers put it in there and they did a sh**** job, and they shouldn't be allowed to get away with that.

If I've learnt anything from dying light it's that I genuinely hate first person for such activities. There's far too much going on for it and negates what fun there is to have with the annoying range of view. First person isn't realistic. You're dealing with craptacular peripheral vision and vertical vision is limited. No to mention that you're getting swarmed by AI and requires that refined control and reaction that simply doesn't translate well with dl gameplay. Even combat is annoying. Crappy cross hair (or shall we say tiny white dot that blends into environments way too often) and melee combat is impossible when you're trying to take on more than one AI.

I *really* hope that I can get past my preference for camera style with The Order. If anything, that might be the reason I end up not enjoying it. Never have and I guess I never will.

PGU: Try my best to get through the campaign for DL, keep up with my neuronation exercises, start up first light and GTAV (hint: I'll probably pass on the FP view), and renew my PS+.

i think the awards were fitting considering. and slege hammer probably do deserve a bit more cos they did do some thing right but its cos it COD that they were probably over looked a bit and then finally with dying light is a bit of mixed bag some people like it some not so much but it looks alright atleast but maybe like you said it would have gotten better overall if it had been a bit more polished but it looks okay so for the personal i've been just watching anime lately so i have played much other than the lego games on vita and pokemon on the 3DS while i was away

happy gaming
