Ben's Week In Review: June 7

A couple more weeks until Batman: Arkham Knight. Who's excited?

I hope that new PS4 model introduction comes with a price cut

This past week, we heard about FCC evidence that indicates the future existence of a new PlayStation 4 model, which will have a 1TB hard drive option. That's significant.

But it'd be even more significant if Sony announces this new hardware model with a price drop. Without any hugely compelling exclusives on the market right now - aside from Bloodborne, which is admittedly very niche - there's not as much reason to spend the extra $50 on a PS4. The Xbox One has a better exclusive lineup for 2015, at least for the time being, and games like Halo 5: Guardians and Forza 6 Motorsport have a lot of pull. The bottom line is that Sony can't continue to hold this lead if they intend to be the most expensive console for an extended period of time. That just doesn't work in the long run.

As for the bigger hard drive, I'm not sure I need it. Installing and re-installing games just isn't that hard to do on the PS4; I've already done it several times. And as save data takes up basically no space at all, I don't really have a problem with the 500GB HDD. Of course, I know a lot of gamers use more space on a more frequent basis and they're all clamoring for the bigger hard drive. I get it. But the only way I'll be interested is if a 1TB PS4 is a specially themed Uncharted 4: A Thief's End console, or something like that. :) And by the way, can't wait for The Nathan Drake Collection.

Fallout 4 needs a good story to interest me

I know everyone is drooling all over the recently announced Fallout 4, which I understand. I remember how popular Fallout 3 was and I know many RPG fanatics who love the series.

I wondered if the new title could possibly interest me because I just don't care about the setting. But I should clarify that any environment can draw me in if there's a decent story and compelling characters involved. Problem is, I don't see Fallout 4 playing out like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt; it's more of a post-apocalyptic Elder Scrolls, which is why I couldn't stand Fallout 3. If Bethesda took a cue from CD Projekt Red when it comes to narrative, I might be more intrigued. If not, if all I'm doing is running around a barren wasteland full of sand and dirt and grimy individuals, I'm going to lose interest really fast.

I really wish we'd see a Dishonored sequel. I'd be all over that.

Personal gaming update

I actually liked The Escapists but it eventually got too tedious. The retro vibe, coupled with the unique challenge of escaping prison, grabbed me for a few hours but it soon lost the magic. I explain why in my review but I will add that if you're a puzzle junkie, you should really give it a try. The rest of my time has been taken up with The Witcher 3, as I said yesterday. There are so many reason I keep coming back for more... I'm glad I installed the new update but I have to say, the increase in font size is a little disappointing. It's better but still not great.

I'll have to put it down long enough to play Arkham Knight, which will be tough, as that's another franchise I just don't do. Superheroes aren't my thing. But the good news is that a Rocksteady-developed Batman is like a guaranteed gem, and I never have too much difficulty playing great games. :)

I fully expect MS to take May. Sony hasn't done anything to change the momentum and I still regularly see great XO deals for prospective buyers.

I'm excited for Fallout 4. I think it'll be more greatness from the series. I don't need it to be anything other than what it's known for. But I don't want it this year. This year is just packed already for me. And I think it's obvious it's NOT coming this year anyway. When retailers like Gamestop list a game for the very last day of the year that's code for "it's not coming this year but still put your pre-order in anyway." I've seen this happen a number of times.

Man, I'm excited for Batman. It'll get my undivided attention as soon as it releases. I do have my pre-order in.

PGU: Witcher 3 has been real cool stuff. I do like how the cutscenes have felt a lot more stable after the patches, and the text does read much better to my eyes. It's now safe to say I prefer it to Dragon Age the more I play it (and that's not just because it's more stable now). I still encounter weirdness from time to time but it's way more tolerable now.

So has anyone tried the free PS4 downloads of the Metro games? Man. I'm so impressed. The graphics look so detailed, and fluid at 60FPS. The engine the team made for that game doesn't get enough recognition. It can't be looked at as only a last gen port. The game was designed with high end PC's in mind during creation, where materials and models and effects were all made significantly better before being scaled down to consoles last gen. It really shows. Other than the sometimes or somewhat dated looking faces the game is stunning with close up details. Some of the most intricate I've seen of any shooter.

I'll have to fit those games into my busy play schedule sometime this year.

This year has just been one of the best ever for me in gaming. It's been full of surprises.

For me it has all been about The Witcher 3. I played it practically all day today. The game is so fun I didn't do any quests. I just went around treasure hunting and finding new locations to explore. I realized that I still have the game on Blood and Bare bones difficulty which explains why I was getting my ass whooped against enemies that look weak (humans are much easier to fight).

The game is just a breath of fresh air and sometimes I leave the game running and listening to the sounds of nature -- ahhh. Unlike Fallout and Skyrim -- I don't feel overwhelmed by the amount of side quests there are.

The next game that I'll purchase will be MGS5 so that means that for this month, June, July and August it's all about The Witcher 3, Bloodborne and a little bit of Ultra Street Fighter.

Even 1tb doesn't seem to be enough. I'm already close to 550 on mine. I imagine after the 2015 lineup I plan to get ill be close to 700 if not over.

Been all about Splatoon. The game is strangely addictive.

It doesn't matter if you're going digital, even if you buy it on disk it installs everything. The only difference is if you have it on disk you don't have to re-download 50gb if you delete it.

It's still faster to install from a physical disc than to download a full game, especially considering how big PS4 games can be.

No. The only digital games I own are the ones I get for free from PS+ which is quite a few. Like Matt said even physical games take up a lot of HDD space.

Hey @Ben,

is PSXE needing a website database update?
We don't have PS4 tabs at the bottom for Recent reviews, previews so the last thing listed there is KH 2.5 haha. Noticed it long ago but only just now questioned what other records do we have here that don't have relationships with each other.

Actually I'm leaning towards the simple case in that it's probs simply just a missing Javascript/DOM detail, as seen by a current list elements:

<li class="notselected" id="tab_4_2"><a href="javascript: void(0);" onclick="switcheroo(document.getElementById('popular_reviews_table'), document.getElementById('tab_4_2'), ps3_reviews, 2);">PS3</a></li>

Do you happen to know if XML is the only back-end language used for organizing PSXE data? Should've expressed interest much earlier.

I may be the only one who only checks the 'Recent' tables instead of the left side bars haha.
Carry on.

They've needed an update for a very long time now. Their banner still says "Now covering games for 10 years". They hit that 10 year mark back in 2009, and they haven't had a site update since then, and it shows.

I'd be happy to update the site after getting some more tools in my belt if I get permission. Can definitely help with my resume too.

Anyone want a collaboration? Will gladly accept. Keen to make it happen, give back to PSXE.

Don't worry it'll definitely be free, just for my experience and to show at employer meetups.

I'll contact you when I acquire a certain set of additional skills and have ideas.

Collab offers are still accepted without question :D

This puzzles me Ben: You speak of this new model with 1tb storage space like it's the only way to upgrade disk space? Surely you are sware it's a very simple task to replace disk?

I didn't get the feeling he was saying that. It is a nice upgrade for people who for whatever reason don't want to bother with upgrading on their own, and plenty of people probably don't even know it's an option.

Also even though it's not hard to upgrade, if you're not tech savvy it can seem intimidating.

It's completely bonkers to purchase an entrely new machine just to get a bigger hard drive. Madness. It's like buying a new car when you need new windshields.

Sony themselves offer a step-by-step guide in the manual on how to replace the drive.

I don't disagree with you at all, Beam. I'd never drop another $350 on what is essentially a 524GB HDD. That is crazy.

But I'm also not 13, I'm not technologically inept, and I know enough about consoles to know I have options.

Also, as someone who has not yet bought a PS4, I'd obviously opt for one with a 1TB HDD over 500GB, even if I was planning on upgrading at some point in the future. I probably wouldn't, because I'd only ever use a PS4 for PS4 exclusive games, but you get the point.

By all means, for new customers it's a no-brainer.

But to even discuss if this new model is worth it to upgrade the storage space is just... Crazy talk.

Maybe you missed the part where I said I might consider it if the system was a specially-themed model, like for Uncharted.

Contrary to Bio's insinuation that I'm 13, I know it's an option. None of this tech crap is HARD. I realize the smartphone Nazis in stores give you this condescending, pitying look when you tell them you don't want the latest and greatest, as if you're just too stupid to handle it, but really, these people seem to have the IQ of a gnat.

I wasn't saying YOU were 13, Ben. Nothing in that particular reply was even remotely about you, but me speaking generally, pointing out some types of people for whom upgrading their own HDDs might not be an option for whatever reason.

What a weird reply, Ben... Especially that irrelevant rant at the end. I don't think I've seen you this defensive in a long time.

But anyway. I didn't miss anything. In your text here it looks to me that you believe some current ps4 owners will buy this console to increase the storage capacity. That's how I read it. And that's why I get the impression you are not aware that the hard drive is in fact the single thing in a PS4 one *can* easily upgrade - from an economic perspective (well from any perspective really) it's a horrible reason to buy a new PS4.

For all I know you may even be right - there probably are some that will do that. I just think it looks like you're not even aware of the alternative, since you don't even mention it.

Ben, if you actually read comments on this site that weren't about you, you would notice, as I've pointed out repeatedly, that 99% of my comments have nothing to do with either you or the site.

I'm not the one with the 'obsession', so please stop projecting. I only ever replied to Beam in this instance to back up what you were actually saying, if you bothered to read that first reply, and then simply expounded on that general statement about who may or may not want a 1TB PS4. Somehow you took that as me calling you a 13 year old. How, I don't really know.

Ben; Obviously you had to know it was possible, but I do suspect you are not aware of how easy it is to do so.

I dunno, it's just an observation. It's just the way you discuss the new model. It's like you see this primarily as an option for existing PS4 users to finally upgrade their storage capacity if they need to. And that makes as much sense to me as discussing whether or not the new Ford Focus is worth purchasing to get a new windshield.

To remove the old hard drive and insert the new really is comparable with taking off a lego brick and place a new one there. It was a bit hazzle on the PS3 to copy the save games, but I believe all that is taken care of now with cloud storage. And it's all described in detail by Sony.

(And no, Bio really did not talk about you at all here now. It would be sweet if you start lowering your guard someday. We're not all out to get you)

I hope Fallout 4 lives up to expectations. Fallout 3 was one of my favourite games of the last generation, but had some really annoying bugs. At one point near the end of the main quest, it kept crashing my ps3 after 20-30 minutes of play. My friends had better experiences on pc.

Really excited for Arkham Knight though my attention has refocused on Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.

PGU: So I've FINALLY beaten The Witcher 3 main story, including more or less all secondary quests, treasure and monster hunts etc. I'm truly too frightened to tell you all just how many hours I have pumped into this title since release, it would honestly shock you.

It's so bad in fact that I need to step away from it a while as I'm simply so fatigued from the whole experience. It was amazing but yeah I sorta managed to sicken myself.

Will be replayed on Death March difficulty once the expansions release as Blood and Broken Bones was simply too easy once you've upgraded you're character and equipment past a certain point.

Beamboom, $20 the game is not going to launch this year. winner pays with psn card?

terms, you win if they announce a launch date that is this year, and they stick to it no delays, and the game is out by dec 31, 2015.

i win if it is givin a launch date of anything after dec 31, 2015 and does not launch this year.

what say you?

honestly i hope you win

I'm up for a bet but let's not make it a fixed sum (or currency).

What if we just say one PSN game, loser choose but it has to be a title the winner don't already own? If you are low on cash it's fine if you find a cheap one, if money is not as tight it's of course cool if it is a cool game.

so first off yeah batman is coming up soon so that'll be big when it drops into the market.

the theres the possibillity of a new ps4 possibly slim and probably with a much larger HDD(which is for all the huge games people are putting on their consoles.

then theres the fallout that is offically coming and i can understand why people are excited and i'm kinda excited but i have played much of any fallout so can't fully get behind this yet based on that but i get its like one of if not the biggest game announce of the year if thats a fair call.
and year i think a Dishonored sequel would be cool for sure the origonal was a great game.

so then to the PGU: i have had te usual weekly BO2 zombies every other day after school when my cousin gets home. then i have been play some more dawn of war soul storm mod and then a bit of C&C3 last couple days so that me.

hope you guys have a great week

happy gaming
