The One Game That Gave You Nightmares

Halloween is upon us once again and in honor of the creepy holiday, we want to know:

What's the one game you've played that actually gave you nightmares? The one that was legitimately freaky and made you jump out of your seat? The one you loved and hated to play with the lights off at 2 a.m.? In other words, what is the scariest damn game you've ever played?

One of the more recent titles that got to me was Outlast. I think it was how the horror adventure was structured; it was well paced and whenever you're no superhero, things are that much scarier. In fact, the less equipped you are, the more afraid you are (in most cases). Another game that I found quite unsettling was Alan Wake, which wasn't exactly a horror game - it was more of a dark psychological thriller - but its atmosphere was wicked good. No matter what you were doing or where you were, you always had this sense that something awfully unpleasant lurked around the corner. That's what any good scary game or movie does, right?

Perhaps the scariest of all time would have to go to Silent Hill 2 for me. It was a combination of great audio (using subtle noises to continually freak you out) and limited visibility (something is out there but where?) that preyed on your emotions. Never actually seeing something but allowing your imagination to run wild sits at the core of every truly terrifying experience. Oh yeah, and that demo for Silent Hills had an effect on me as well; it sucks that the project got axed. Guillermo Del Toro didn't like it, either.

So, what's on your list?

This!, fortunately I wasn't a kid when I tried that one (used a emulator after read an article about horror games from a magazine), as a kid I just can't imagine how I would deal with this game if I had it for my Super nes.

The ending sequence of Parasite Eve scared the hell outta me. Too much Resident Evil in my RPG! ;)

Resident Evil Remake when it was released for GameCube was pretty freaky deaky. The tension building in the game kept me from wanting to continue.

Probably the one that stayed with me the longest after playing it was 'Rule of Rose' on PlayStation 2. The gameplay is average, but the story and atmosphere are great, and something about it just wouldn't quit pestering me for a while after I finished.

Silent Hill 3 did it for me with it's nightmarish imagery which was clearly evident in the games atmosphere. Some of the twisted goings-on happening in the background made it very disturbing.

Forbidden Siren 2 would be another one, the bizarre blend of human with bug/insect appendages gave me the creeps. There are some creatures in that game that i still can't unsee to this day.

Finally, P.T....unfathomable amounts of nope!!

No.1 for me was Silent Hill with the radio static and then something coming out of the darkness at me. Heck just about everything in it. Silent Hill 2 had its moments as well including Pyramid Head.

Fatal Frame gave me a few shivers up the spine as well I can tell you.

Keep playing!

Siren on the ps3 screwed me up too. That chanting... Hearing it right as you fell asleep, did some nasty things to your dreams.

I think Silent Hill 4s Twins though gave me the most nightmares. That and the overwhelming sense that not even the hub world is safe as the spirits start to make sounds, and appear. It spooked me real nice back in the day. I miss it.

DOOM. My friend and I used to play it non stop after school and weekends. So we both started having these "Doom nightmares" we called them. The game wasn't scary of course, but the nightmares are.

I hate to say it but... Dino Crisis... yeah, I was a scaredy cat :(

... I couldn't even play P.T. on my own. I would try it, then after entering the hallway, I would close the app and play a little bit of Dead or Alive just to forget about the dark place... I live alone, btw.

I'm thinking the 1st two Manhunt & F.E.A.R. games, were quite freaky-deaky.

And not sure if I remember right since it was so far back & I no longer have it, but I thinking that I'd give the original Splatterhouse an honorable mention too.

The only game that has ever given me actual nightmares, the kind where you wake up in a panic, is Max Payne. It was those awful hallucination dream sequences about his wife and baby. Gut wrenching.
