How to Score a PS2 at Launch.

This feature article has been updated with a list of large retail stores that don't take pre-orders. See page 3.

With the slash of Playstation 2 units cut from 1 million to 500,000, gamers are now worried that they won't be able to score a Playstation 2 on October 26th or even worse, by the end of the year. If you have reserved a Playstation some time after the middle of July at EBWorld.com, Gamestop.com, Babbages, Software ETC. or any other online or retail store, then your chances of getting a Playstation 2 on 10/26/00 aren't so great. But don't lose hope folks, if you got some sort of notification, hold on to your pre-orders because you may be one of the people who will get a Playstation 2 the week when Sony will ship 100,000 more units, as they plan to do every week. If you have reserved your PS2 sometime before August, you will most likely get one before Christmas. The first 100,000 shipment of systems will arrive November 2nd, so now Sony will most likely ship a grand total of 600,000 PS2s, 700K by 11/7 systems and so on for every week until the end of the year. December 25th, the day when all of the kids will want one thing and that is the Playstation 2. Any parent reading this and hasn't reserved a Playstation 2 unit should be very shamed of themselves because you will let your child down by buying him or her a Dreamcast or worst of all, a Nintendo 64. To every parent reading this right now I highly suggest pre-ordering a Playstation 2 now, but stay away from Kay-Bee toys, they will charge you $330 for it and the system only costs $299.

Now let me get back on track, by the time Christmas comes 1.3 million Playstation 2 units will ship and I'm predicting that many people will be fulfilled with their DVD playing video game machine. By the time the year ends, 1.4 million PS2 units will ship and most likely sell out but if you are prepared, your kid will surely be happy. Remember with 500,000 units shipped to 20,000 videogame stores in the US, that means that every store will get on the average of 25 units and surely larger places like Nobody Beats the Wiz, Circuit City, Sears, CompUSA, K-Mart and Wal-Mart should have over 30 per store and carry PS2s on day one. Now I have compiled a little editorial for those who have not pre-ordered PS2s to explain how you can get one without going through too much hassle.

Here in Rego Park, NY (in NYC) we are surrounded by four stores all on one block. A block away from our office is a Sears that doesn't take pre-orders, the store above Sears (via escalator) is Circuit City. Across the street of the Blvd. is The Wiz, that also takes no pre-orders and down the block is CompUSA that once again takes no pre-orders. We here are always prepared but never the less we will head to all four stores at six o'clock in the morning and see which store we can score a PS2 and what store carries the most Playstation 2 units. Granted if you have a Wal-Mart or a K-Mart around you I suggest you do the same thing, beginning waiting for your PS2 at around 6 o'clock in the morning until the store opens, but the earlier you come, the better chances you have. To be more confident, call any chain store that doesn't take pre-orders and ask them what time will they open and when will they get their shipment of PS2s. No matter what they say about the time of the PS2 shipment, I still suggest showing up at least one hour before the store opens, people may think you are a whacko, but in the end you'll be the one not-sleeping for 72 hours playing your Tekken Tag Tournament, Unreal Tournament, TimeSplitters or Madden NFL 2001. I warn all of you right now, DO NOT be tempted to buy something like a Dreamcast or Nintendo 64, the fact is although Dreamcast is a good system, it will most likely be destroyed by Sony, and well the Nintendo 64 has been destroyed by Sony ever since the release of Final Fantasy VII.
