RPG: For this category there is no first best or second best game, every game listed here MUST be bought for your own good!

1) Final Fantasy IX (Full Review, Buy It) - Of course it would make the list, after all it is a Final Fantasy game and without a doubt the best on the Playstation and may possibly have a slight edge over VI, but it all depends on your taste. Pushing the Playstation's visuals the furthest the series has ever done, FFIX is hands down the best looking Playstation game. The gameplay travels back into the medieval times of wizards, mages, swords and wooden crafted ships, which I know many more people prefer over the sci-fi atmosphere that VII and VIII presented. Final Fantasy IX is a must own videogame for anybody's game collection.

2) Chrono Cross (Full Review, Buy It) - I must admit that I really can't decide which game is better, Final Fantasy IX or Chrono Cross, both in my mind are the two greatest pieces of videogaming history. Chrono Cross is the long awaited sequel to SNES' Chrono Trigger, Square's 16-bit masterpiece is still being called by many as the best RPG ever, while I beg to differ just slightly. Chrono Trigger is definitely one of my top five favorite RPG games of all time. Chrono Cross delivers as a true sequel, it takes place in the same world as CT, during the middle of the first CD (roughly 14 hours) you will encounter some familiar 'souls', and one of the games main characters Kid has a relationship with a previous Chrono Trigger main character character, you'll be shocked to find out who it is. On a visual note Chrono Cross is another breathtaking game from Squaresoft and isn't very far from FFIX as being the best looking game on the PSOne.

3) Legend of Dragoon (Full Review, Buy It) - Some critics hated it, while many others (such as I) loved it. Legend of Dragoon is Sony's answer to Final Fantasy and Chrono Cross, and for a first try the finale is quite powerful indeed. LOD stars a young character named Dart, who later discovers that he has the ability to transform into a powerful creature called a dragoon. Throughout the game you will recruit many other fighters, experience a very plot twisting event and get to know a pretty cool new battle system. I for one loved Legend of Dragoon, while there were critics who hated the game, they must have not played the game long enough to fully enjoy it. LOD was definitely the year's most controversial game in terms of critical argument, the game sold remarkably well and I'm hoping to see a PS2 sequel soon. The visuals can only be said as second to best, FFIX being the reigning winner here, the 600+ pre-rendered backgrounds are some of the best a videogame has ever seen, and the CG presentation is flawless. For Sony's first try, they sure did hit the ball out of the ball park, LOD is an incredibly well executed RPG game and it deserves to be under your Christmas tree.

4) Vagrant Story (Full Review, Buy It) - I really had to make an exception for Vagrant Story, not only was it Square's most innovative videogame yet, but the unique artistic visuals were yet another example of Square pushing hardware. Ashley Riot was the star of the game, and throughout the breathtaking adventure you will make way through marvelously looking environments, the most innovative battle system to grace any videogame. Vagrant Story was also one of the very first games to get a perfect score from the world's most hard headed critics at Famitsu, which is a very popular Japanese magazine, and I myself gave the game a 9.6 overall score. Make sure you get this Adventure/RPG in your stocking.

Sports:

1) NHL 2001 (Full Review, Buy It) - Blending marvelous looking PSOne hockey graphics, NHL 2001 is the best hockey game available on the PS. The graphics look great, the facial detail is some of the best in a 32/64-bit console sports game and the action is pure fun. Re-live the excitement of hockey with NHL 2001, which is EA Sports' ten NHL title and also the best of the series. The commentary is up to snuff and everything else is just fine, sports enthusiasts need NHL 2001 for their PSX.

2) FIFA 2001 (Buy It) - The greatest soccer series returns for its final outing on the Playstation. As if FIFA 2000 wasn't great, 2001 takes everything 2000 did well, and made it much better. The graphics have gotten slightly better, and the only thing that's really different are the rosters, but FIFA 2001 is still the most addictive soccer title, or maybe even sports title period! FIFA 2001 is a sure fire GOOOOAAAAL!!

3) Madden NFL 2001 (Full Review, Buy It) - Rounding of the top three is yet another EA Sports title, Madden NFL 2001 may not be as marvelous as the PS2 version, but it still gets the job done well. It surely has the visuals, and the gameplay is incredibly realistic, but I feel that John Madden's annoying wise cracks need to go and EA must find some way to license Denis Miller. Madden NFL 2001 is a great game worth picking up, read the review to find out more.
