You may not have noticed, but Atlus produced one hell of a PS2 RPG this year, and it's the next installment in the critically acclaimed Shin Megami Tensei franchise. Persaon 4 takes the foundation from earlier entries and improves on it in just about every way, giving the player a more complete and fully realized role-playing adventure. You may not be a fan of the art style, but that doesn't stop the concept from being most original and the gameplay from being both deep and engaging. Just because we've moved on to the PlayStation 3 doesn't mean companies have stopped making games for the PS2, and RPG fans really can't ignore this bad boy.

Obviously, this was going to come down to two titles, and you should've known what the other was: Ready at Dawn's unbelievable God of War: Chains of Olympus. But after some deliberation, we just had to hand the award to Square-Enix's prequel that captured the hearts of handheld owners the world over. Nearly unparalleled visuals and a new action-oriented combat mechanic that just never seemed to get old, Crisis Core may be the finest PSP title to date. If you have a PSP and you don't own this game, you need to check your pulse...'cuz you may be dead. It may not be the FFVII remake we've all been hoping for, but it's the next best thing and there's nothing wrong with that!

Let's face it: the PS3 was made for MGS4. This is not only the current generation's landmark achievement in our humble opinion, but it's also the defining title of the PlayStation 3's library. It redefined how we look at video games, expanded our minds, and raised the bar for the future, which is exactly what we expected it to do. Just to clarify: this is the staff "favorite;" it's not necessarily the "best" (that's coming up next). See, we just wanted to give you the list of games we personally had the most fun with in 2008, and as you can see it includes a couple titles that wouldn't be included in any Game of the Year Nominee list. We just adored the likes of Hot Shots and Devil May Cry 4, and if you try to deny the fun factor in those games, we will fight you! Really, though, the memorable experience of playing MGS4 stands out most in our minds, and we would never say another title stands taller in our estimation. We just can't get over how great that game was, and when we played it, we were ceaselessly amazed. Our favorite, MGS4 is. Big thanks to Konami and Kojima.

i would only agree with the metal gear solid 4 placement because it is a good game but if i had to chose it would be Resistance 2 all the way just bc i'm a huge resistance fan!!!!

i dont think MGS4 deserved best sound, the soundtack for MGS4 unlike MGS1-3 is really forgettable. I thought Dead Space made the best use of sound if im honest. but over all a good sum up of a very good year.

MGS4's music was sick!
Better than all of them 'xcept MAYBE the original.

And even then, I think MGS4 surpassed even the original in terms of soundtrack.

So much so that I just HAD to put some of those songs on my mp3 player.

I'm SOOOOOOO glad MGS4 won best acting. GTA4 wasn't close to what MGS4 did. I don't care how good Niko's accent was.

Thank you for giving Best Racing to GT5. Burnout & Motorstorm wasn't that good.

Deadspace is legenedary! PERIOD! especially that last Boss Fight, You have a huge Asteroid falling towards you and you fight this shadow of colossus wannabee monster, that is just even crazier/humongous. I mean i would of gave Deadspace best graphics and sound, and just tell me that the sound of Deadspace wasnt atmospheric and it scares the living S---T out of you! but I played Metal Gear Solid 4 and was bored with it, I have never been a fan of Metal Gear, so i gave it a try, but Deadspace is just better!

Lol personally i got more hours out of resistance 2, and second is Mgs4 I dunno why just happened like that, third is a tie between fallout 3 and little big plannet. And I own those 4. Also Grand Theft Auto has been played more than fallout or little big planet but i'm getting very bored of it. also i just got resistance fall of man this year and i loved it just as much as 2.

I agree with all the winners PSXE gave to each category, an Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots cleary deseveres overall game of the year as imo its an incredible experience from start to finish, an to whoever said mgs4 didn't deserve the award for best sound, play the game through 5.1/7.1 decoder an you will amazed at the sound level, the explosions, gun fire, noise of explosions in the back ground etc, etc, i could go an on, playing valkyria chronicles at the moment another amazing game, can't understand why its been widely overlooked, goes down to personal taste for consumers i suppose :-(

I totally agree with you guys PSXE.

With a masterpiece like MGS4 it would seem like your work was cut out for you. However with all the incredible games we were blessed with this year it must be hard to give recognition to every game that deserved it.

I have not played Valkyria Chronicles yet, but once I can climb out from under all the great 2008 games I will definitely give it a try.

Or better yet like most of us on here get both machines. Wii next for me then I shall have all 3 consoles. Whatever you do don't sell your 360! I got the 360 for what few exclusives there are now Halo's Gears, Mass Effect etc Same as I did with my PS3 I bought for MSG4!

Meh well i didnt find MGS4's Soundtrack interesting at all, i have it, i got it with my UK Litimed Edition version of MGS4,but the tracks just didnt have any impact likethe previous 3. i though dead space's use of sound was far more effect, it was quite intimidating. if there wasnt a catorgory for voice acting, MGS4 would deserve it, becuase the voice acting is as always phenominal, but as there was a seperate award for that i think Dead Space deserved to win.

Its a real sense of speed. When you're going 180mph in a Viper...you FEEL it. What do you want? The fake visuals of NFS and Burnout ? No...that's not realistic.

PS: Damage is coming but when it does come it won't be the lame-duck that Forzas was. PD is going for PERFECTION even in damage.

gran tourismo has great graphics, but it is a lot harder to make human characters look as good as they did in MGS4 than it is to make cars look good.

This may be off topic, but when playing competitive online in r2, i get XP in the match, but when I look at my stats and what rank I am, it says that I havent gained any XP. Does anyone know what i'm doing wrong. Thanks

Xanavi, Burnout is just as deserving as GT5:p. It is a complete expirience, no it's not realistic but it doesn't pretend to be. It is IMO the only game to ever do the whole "open world" thing right and it was their first try at it. Then when you add that to the fact that Criterion implemented the most original online component a racing game has EVER seen, it makes everything else look more like a joke. If you don't like Burnout that's cool, but to call it, not a real racing game is absolutely wrong.

Have you ever played Burnout? It takes a shitload more skill than GT. Your going about twice as fast with traffic everywhere. You don't simply bounce off of things, you crash. You can't afford to hit anything or you'll lose. Plus Burnout is actual fun! You are not always cursing at the a$$hole who knocked you out of the race(like in GT). You can do awesome things called jumps. Heard of 'em? It's not a cakewalk like GT.

i suppose recession isn't helping overlooked titles. as for most innovative, i think M.E would have won if it had more gameplay. 6 hours isn't enuf. apart from that, nice on page one. Nice to see MGS is winning a few awards. epic game. just epic.
music, puzzle game, i don't care. but for racing, i think motorstorm 2 was the best, it is hard though but burnout can get slightly tedious at times but it is excellent still. But prologue? no, not a full game, yeah credits award were credits due, but it isn't the full monty as it were, so GT5 should get it next year instead. what could be better than GT5 next year. Fuel? HA!
As for RGP, fallout3 all the way. Sport, don't care either.
best fighter? i haven't played any so i'm not one to judge, but surely SCIV. but that's by the by. fPS: resistance is fine. action adenture: gta is probably the best in that category.
platform awards? don't care for anything but ps3. don't hav anything but ps3. and i agree mgs4 does make it as the best title. Some won't agree but it's been so long since release, some might have forgotten the magic.
GOTY: MGS4 is perfect. great. now that's 08 wrapped up, lets get on with 09. i need KZ2, GT5 and COD:MW2. and i'll see what else takes my fancy. i think i'll pik up nfsu too.

GT5P isn't really a demo. 7 tracks + a reverse version or two which changes the flow completely and over 70 cars, more than most "FULL" racing games = even though a Prologue, just a taste it offers more than full racing games. All this for 40$...nuff said.

It won the award it deserves.

Thank you guys, great awards and while i love GT5P, im an addict. I have to agree, MGS4 graphics would blow my mind sometimes ESPECIALLY in the middle east when you were creeping around enemies real close by. Amazing graphics.

GT5P deserves best racing for obvious reasons. Best physics, best graphics and likely the most cars with new ones being given to us for free *COUGH* Spec III update 3 new cars FREE.

Never the less, GT5Prologue still massacres other racers in all regards that matter without Damage. Best physics, you actually feel like you're driving the car, best graphics, IMO great music. Best courses to race on which are only made better by the graphics.

Xanavi, you haven't mentioned the new Dashboard Cam. Playing the game in that view is SICK! I can never go back to the old camera views. You really get the feel of the car even more when playing in that view.

Arvis, i feel the same man. In some cars the view is limited but man i can't not rase the dashboard/cockpit cam and now i can't play other racers cause i don't feel like im actually playing a racing game. That view really makes me a part of the action.

One thing you gotta do, play around with your buttons. I have the Look left/Look right view to L/R buttons respectively, it REALLY helps when i need to look for racers next to me. I have look back on the down D-button so i have a pretty good view of the action around me.

man, i dont think i agree with more than half of those.

the biggest standouts to me was that Battlefield Bad Company should have taken best FPS, Burnout Paradise should have taken best racing game, and the MGS4 sweep across nearly every category it was in was a bit much...

I think Burnout Paradise had more popularity but i haven't played either of them(GT5 or Burnout)thus can't really judge.

TO ME best sports game would be soccer,thus
Fifa 09 for me.

Ergh...not sure why the # of Comments isn't appearing on the front page...gotta fix that.

Anyway, I think some of you are focusing too much on MGS4. There were a LOT of awards this year, and obviously, MGS4 didn't win every Genre award. In fact, it didn't win ANY. It lost the major Best Action/Adventure title to GTAIV. Just because it won Best Graphics, Best Sound, Best Acting, Best PS3 Game and GotY doesn't mean it's a "sweep."

Whole lot of awards and a whole lot of winners, including several for LBP and Resistance 2, plus about a dozen other single winners. Seriously, read the WHOLE thing before you start talking crazy, please. ;)

in my opinion, all the cadidates are great games and we have to have a single winner out, thats why MGS4 has to be the one, cuz no one else deserves the crown more than MGS4, however, other cadidates are also the best in their styles and categories, I love them all therefore I want to get them all. lol

I haven't played Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII but it's hard to believe that there is a better RPG game than Fallout 3.
As for best FPS game, Battlefield: Bad Company should have won IMO. I just really didn't like Resistance 2...

Ok, once and for all: Fallout 3 is BARELY an RPG, everyone. If you consider it the best RPG of 2008, then you probably don't really like ACTUAL RPGs and of course would not understand how a game like Crisis Core could win the award. So, just accept that Fallout 3 is more of an unholy abominable action/adventure/FPS/RPG hybrid step-child and should not be considered of higher quality than REAL RPGs like Valkyria Chronicles and Crisis Core.

Do you have it arvis? I ain't against ya, Fallout 3 can really only be called an RPG because of the long interesting story and the V.A.T.S system, I prefer my RPG's old school style too but F3 is a farking awesome game.

When games like Fallout 3 start winning Best RPG awards, my childhood dies.

Arvis - You've been on this site blasting people who are judging VC before they've played the game. Agreed. Now you're on here mouthing off at Fallout 3 before you've had time to spend any "quality time" with it? I don't know what section of the field you're playing in, but F3 is an RPG and a damn good one at that. In fact it's an atrocity that PSXE didn't give it it's proper award. Now take your own advice and give it quality time before making any assessments. It spanks FFCC all over the map and is by far the best RPG of 2008.

Well Ben ive been following this site for like a year when you just started and before the update and ive never signed up cause im tired of arguying over and over with fanboys about which console is the better.

One thing that has changed about you is that you became a fanboy of Sony so deep you can't even see it, you do a game of the year and you fail to mention in any category any game that hasn't been realesed on a Sony machine.

Sorry but either dedicate this award to only Sony platforms or come back as you where before and stop being a fanboy.

BTW im not gonna respond to this comment so bash me that im a wii fanboy or a 360 droid all you want.

I thought it was understood that these were all going to be Sony-only platform awards. Hence no "Best 360 Game" or "Best Wii Game" categories.

I think that is the obvious conclusion that people who have an ounce of reason will come to, anyways.

This is a Sony-centric site, genius. And for the record, I'm playing Gears 2 right now and it rocks. In fact, I said as much in my last Week in Review. It's the third-best game of 2008 behind MGS4 and GTAIV, IMO.

But I shouldn't need to explain myself. This is a PLAYSTATION SITE so we're limited to games on PLAYSTATION platforms when doing awards.

Had a crazy dream last night where I wandered into a post apocalyptic shopping mall (Too much Fallout 3 on my brain) and found an intact store selling games named "The first PSX Extreme retail store" Pretty wacky huh?

A couple things I disagree with (just opinion):
To me, Fallout 3 is best RPG,
GoW:CoO is best PSP game,
and I think Deadspace should win best Sound but that could be because I haven't completely finished the first three MGS games..

Everything else is deserved.

The only award choice I can disagree with is GTPro as Best Racer, don't get me wrong it's a great racer but Wipeout HD is amazing. Plus it's only $20.

WipeOut HD is the ultimate adrenaline rush. And for $20, it belongs in every PS3 owner's library. It's an underrated title, just like Valkria's Chronicles. GT5P is in a class of it's own. Wipeout HD is like a highly caffeinated energy drink, while GT5P is like a finely brewed espresso.

Allow me to clarify our choice for GT5P as best racer, R2 for best FPS, Crisis Core for best RPG, and MGS4 for best sound.

Everybody knows I'm a hardcore fan of the racing genre. A lot of you ask for Burnout or Midnight Club to win, but the big picture here is that these games exhibit some horrific flaws. Burnout gets extremely repetitive and tedious, and doesn't allow for instant race restarts. Midnight Club had a poor framerate and an awful rubberbanding A.I., making it beyond frustrating to play. For GT5, it costs much less than the other games, yet provides a far more polished experience, with a ton of value, a superb physics engine, absurdly great visuals, online gameplay, and downloadable content. MClub and Burnout are still stuck feeling more like past-gen games, where as Gran Turismo makes far more advances.

As far as sound is concerned, MGS4 had it all. Remixed tunes from MGS1-3, Dolby 5.1 and 7.1 support, uncompressed audio, flawless voice acting, and immense background audio. The other games in the list, while great, didn't convey the overall aural package - when compared to MGS4, they were all missing at least one thing.

Also, as far as best FPS, we decided Resistance 2 was the best for a number of reasons. R2 features the largest online campaign you could ask for - eight players! Then there are the 60 player multiplayer matches. On top of that, there's still the single-player campaign, which is the ONLY thing games like Bioshock and Dead Space had. Boasting such an epic online component helped drive R2 above the others.

The pick for best RPG was not an easy one to make, but I ultimately argued that Crisis Core is more accessible, and is the more traditional RPG game, with less of an action element, as opposed to Fallout 3. Fallout 3's depth is so expansive that it can almost border confusion, and the game doesn't really fall into any one genre, either. Crisis Core, while not as long as Fallout 3, is arguably more fun, with a better, more engaging story that also progresses a lot smoother than Fallout's, thanks to the amazing cut-scenes. Even though Crisis Core is linear, it's still got more charm and appeal than Fallout 3, which can often feel polarizing.

Like I said, you have to look at the big picture here, and not just one little aspect. We choose these winners with our minds and not our hearts, as poetically corny as that may sound.

Judging Burnout by the demo is unfair. It was a good demo but it only had like 4 events. The main game completely changes things because literally EVERY stop light has an event, it's much less tedious.

I would have agreed with "no restarts" comment when I first started playing Burnout but after about a month I realized that not having that option actually made it feel like more of a "real world". I would also ask what felt repetitive about it? What other racing game has ever given you so many options? There are also 50+ different cars some of them different in every way from others.

No offense Arnold but the problems you had with the game make it seem like you just rushed through the game or tried it for a couple hours and gave up on it. I'm not assuming anything, just saying that I felt the same way after about a week of having the game. After I adjusted to the fact that this new Burnout was a completely new Burnout I had more fun with it than any racing game ever.

Arnold... man I respect you, but your assessment of what makes the RPG of the year has got me seeing red. I see why YOU thought CC was better than F3, but I really feel sorry for anyone who loves RPGs and goes out to spend 40usd on CC instead of 60usd for F3 based on these awards.

RPGs are about playing another life. If anything took me out of that experience in FFCC it was those randomized god forsaken spinning slot machines. Then it was the on-rails game play. Fun game, but for total immersion in an RPG environment, F3.

Arnold must be smoking those good drugs saying that Crisis Core is more fun than Fallout 3. Here we go again adding more hype to the FFVll saga.

You can't justify a game winning best RPG by saying "it's more fun", that's relative, it changes from person to person. sure, Fallout 3 doesn't have the best story or the cut scenes to go with it, but let's take in mind the depth of the game. You can play Fallout 4 times and things won't go the same way each and every time and I'm not being technical.

To even think Crisis Core won best RPG of the year over Fallout 3 and Valkyria Chronicles is simply preposterous.

You're missing the point. It's not about what we thought was more fun, it's about what we thought MORE people would enjoy. In this way, Crisis Core is a better RPG. Personally, I have a feeling I'd greatly dislike Fallout 3 and would never play it, and I don't know anyone who really DOES want to play it. Furthermore, it's difficult to argue against Crisis Core's quality...I doubt you played it, to be honest.

That's really relative too Ben. I don't know ANYONE who has any interest in Crisis Core. But I do know tons of people who would play Fallout 3. It appeals to the shooter fans while still technically being an RPG.

For the record, my personal GotY list would most certainly include Gears 2. I'd still say MGS4 is the best game of 2008, but I'd have to think long and hard when choosing the runner-up...it'd be between GTAIV and Gears.

Then it would probably go R2, Dead Space, Prologue, and DMC4. Bear in mind that I didn't play either LBP or Fallout 3.

For me, MGS4, GTA4, R2, Gears2,Deadspace. Deadspace, for me actually had the most riveting single-player experience, but the other games didn't fall too far behind with their's, plus, they had multiplayer. GTA4 was the most fun, but only for the first playthrough. R2 beat out Gears for me, just because I find fp more engaging and action-oriented than tp. And MGS4 was just overall the best package.

Not to drag too much on 360 but I felt Gears2 was a little disappointing gameplay wise. Well at least for the first half, it got a bit better/livelier towards the end but still. I think I walked over 2 miles in that game lol.. and it was much easier, I think, compared to the first. But it was still loads of fun! =)

Interesting. So Crisis Core wins best RPG without Ben getting the chance to experience playing Fallout 3... hmm. Alright, well i think we on the same page... I haven't played Crisis Core.

So Ben, when I play Crisis Core and you play Fallout 3 we will both know what we both missing and I'm sure you'll play Fallout 3 two or more times. The game will have you hooked that you'll find it hard making time for PSX lol... just a lil joke ^_^

Me, too. I've heard great ratings about Fallout3 across the board, but after playing some of Oblivion, I just found Bethseda's art-style, or complete lack thereof, was completely putrescent in a Garbage-pale kids kind-of-way. Though, I think Ben doesn't like it because he abhors substandard ports.

I'm probably the only person weird enough to say this but I think Mirror's Edge should have got best art direction and most innovative. Maybe even most overlooked.

Damn it, Dead Space should have won SOMETHING.. it's not everyday EA knocks it out of the park like that. Plus that game is insane.. the boss battles are some of the best I have ever played. As for MGS4, lol you guys must really like Kojima.. I thought it was a great game throughout.. but way to give it to the mainstream. And one other thing.. how about next year.. we have seperate catagories for PSP games.. Because when you give an award to a psp game over a (outstanding) PS3 game.. it just seems VERY biased. It could be the best PSP game ever.. but it simply is an entirely different ballpark. Besides, they are still selling PSP's?!? Lmao.. the people who make those Barbie games are going to be really happy to know all you people like to play with dolls. (Im looking at you LBP players.)
