PlayStation 3 Hits Stride, Xbox 360 Standing Still
Yes, I know. I work for PSX Extreme so "of course" I'd say this. I'm not even going to dignify that with an explanation, but let's just say that anyone who knows me realizes that after a quarter-century of gaming, I have little to no "brand loyalty." And by the way, I would've reversed this same title in favor of the 360 back in 2007 because it was just that obvious...just like this situation is equally obvious.
Let's be straight about this. When I walk into a game store, or when I survey the web every day for news, I keep an eye on anything related to either the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 'cuz I own both. I was one of the first to buy Gears of War 2 last year and I own all the Halos. I also really want a sequel to Lost Odyssey and I will literally jump for joy like a pansy if it ever gets announced. But throughout 2009, all I've seen in terms of software is domination by the PlayStation 3. The Wii is essentially non-existent this year in terms of games (like that's anything new) and besides a few choice selections - me wants Alan Wake, for instance - I see nothing all that pressing for the 360. This year, Killzone 2 has already rocked my socks and inFamous is another fantastic addition to the PS3 exclusive lineup. Oh, and did you see all that new gameplay footage for Heavy Rain? It may not be as impressive as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but it took my breath away in a whole different way...
Oh yes, Uncharted 2 is gonna blow you away, as will MAG. Then, I realize I've been complaining about the lack of RPGs on the PS3, but perhaps that time is over. Disregarding the FFs that are coming, there's also the recent announcements of Demon's Souls (coming to US; yay!), White Knight Chronicles and Last Rebellion, along with this week's release of Cross Edge. We also can't forget Gran Turismo 5 looming out there in the future, and we can pretty much guarantee that Insomniac is cooking up another winner in Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time. God of War III will just...you know...BLOW THE EFF UP. Then you've got whatever Kojima is working on, which is most likely another PS3 exclusive (just a guess) and at this point, can we come to any other conclusion? Seriously? I look for 360 games all the time. I really do. I look at the upcoming release list just about every day to see if I can spot something I really want. I see a few, but none come even close to the potential excellence of the titles I've just listed, and that's that.
The PS3 may be in the single best position it has ever been in, especially with rumors of a price drop and/or redesign on the way. And I'm well aware that all the 360 fans will just toss a horde of sales numbers in my face, but that's just because they know - deep down in their bitter, uncompromising hearts - that the PS3's current and future exclusive lineup vastly outstrips the competition. This is about software, and software will eventually push hardware sales when we're talking about exclusives. Bottom line? The PS3 is on a roll, and I just don't see the 360 doing much of anything. Such is, my friends. Such is.

Kojima has for more than decade talked 'bout how MGS fits best with the Playstation brand and how it's always the best move to have it under the PS.
That and him being a perfectionist/pushing the limits would not make sense to have it on that other console.
The only way it could happen is if Kojima himself doesn't work on MGS5

@E3 Sony will more than likely put forth more exclusives than Microsoft. That alone is a big thing when you think 'bout it.
And what 'bout Trico? That might come out early next year.
Playstation doesn't play around, at the end of the day they have they have the longest run, they stay in the game longer, and the deliver more.
SCEE has become such a powerhouse for Sony. You combine that with how amazing SCEA already is and then add what SCEJ is capable of and you really have force which will crush any other console.
The 360 is entering Dreamcast status, where it ran out of life early. The 360 just like the Dreamcast was something that amazed gamers early on, it was like the first console to make the jump. 360 does have a better start than the Dreamcast, but the situation's the same.
Dreamcast was really a beefed up Nintendo 64
Just like 360 is a beefed up Xbox

The Dreamcast itself was an extremely solid console, with Sega getting serious after years of flopping around, but they had dug their own grave at that point, and the timing next to PS2 didn't help anything.
Neither 360 or PS3 are comparable to the Dreamcast's situation.

That and you're key market will be to North America, as that war was mostly the States against Vietnam. And from the marketing side of things, selling a game about a war that the states lost? It's a bit of a gamble. Most of us won't really care as long as it's a solid game, but for some..it's still a hard pill to swallow and that could affect sales.

If you're willing to wait a few more months, they don't even have to be used games to get a discount.
That's what I do; for instance, I just started playing BioShock ($20) and I'll get Fallout 3 when the GOTY edition drops. Q: How does it diminish my play experience that I waited 9 months? A: Not at all.

However, I think you might have to give MS and the 360 more credit post E3 and writng it's obit the week before E3 could bite you on the bum , Ben. MS could well announce exclusives from Rare(two), Epic(possibly two again -Nano Strike plus one), Lionhead, Valve and MW, no?
Add in ODST, AW and more and it doesn't look quite so shabby-Forza3 will likely beat GT5 to market as well. Itagaki has a 360 game to promote too, doesn't he?
I'm not saying that Sony haven't got EVEN more to tell us about(they will have- not even half of the Sony friendly/controlled studios have told us exactly what their projects are)and we might even see more of Trico or hear when/if the R* PS3 exclusive is coming. What I do think , though, is that ight now was a risky moment to be writing MS off considering that last year the world declared theirs the best E3 showing merely on the strength of hooking a mp version of FF13 alone.

Now last E3 for Sony's side was way more entertaining. Way more meat on the bone.
They had LBP, and Resistance 2 for exclusives that eclipsed Gears 2 in my opinion. They showed off a bit of MAG to wet everyones appetite. Showed the massive online version of the upcoming DC Universe Online, etc, etc.
Really if you watched both of the companies Keynote addresses, Microsoft had not much to gloat about and Sony had the more robust conference in terms of stage, product, and length of presentation. And really I see another lackluster E3 year again for Microsoft compared to all the amazing list of exclusives Sony will have to show. Just God of War 3 by itself would blow away anything Microsoft had to show if that was all Sony had to show.
So I agree with Ben, that the well is drying up for Microsoft, whereas the well is flooding over for Sony.

If all they needed was a game going multi last year for that to be the general media consensus(which is the one most prospective HD console owners will get to see/hear about)-then what if MS actually do roll out the games I mention plus more this year? I think you know what I mean.
For the general gaming press(western based at least) to loosen up on Sony they'll not only have to better what MS shows in terms of software-they'll have to give them the thing they crave most, a price cut and nothing less.
Us PS3 owners know the value but our console is still portrayed as the expensive alternative-and damn the out of the box features. Also , if Sony decide not to announce any of the games that we know must exist(but, again, lots of people not yet owning a current gen console won't have a clue)this E3 and concentrate on those already announced I doubt the wider opinion will be that Sony wowed at E3.
Mainly, though, (and away from the reality that Sony have to do way more than MS at E3 to be considered to have "won" there, or even competed)MS have kept their powder very dry and if there are big reveals from them I can see Ben being given a bit of stick. I own a 360 and a Wii besides my PS3(which is my preferred gaming machine)but , still, even if I didn't I'd want MS to compete as I strongly believe that when there's real competition between the exclusives on different platforms then the games we all get evolve far more quickly.
Would anyone really want the 360 to be done and dusted? If it's even part of the reason that KZ2 was made to shine so much(for E.G) then why should we?

I know any topic about the console war gets reads, so I guess that's why you keep doing it. But it just gets annoying reading the same paragraph every time.
I know I have the choice not to read the article, but I'm at work and pretty much check out everything because I enjoy the site. It's just something that is very obvious and maybe you should stop writing so many articles that are so similar.
It's okay to realize you're at fault here and there Ben. It just seems like every time someone gives you a bit of criticism you never accept any of it. But you use your skills as a writer to make the other person sound like they don't know what they are talking about.
Stay chill.

And here's a challenge for you: find a publication that focuses on one aspect of the entertainment industry. Sift through three years worth of issues. ...see how many similar articles you find. It's the NATURE of the publication. It's the topic at hand. It will be discussed, and lo and behold, we MIGHT be talking about similar things every now and then.
If YOU want to try coming up with entirely original articles a million times a year, feel free. I'm just sayin'. ;)

Of course during a 3 year span a publication is going to have articles that are about the same thing. And you should keep updating us every few months. It just seems like I read that same article 2-3 times a month on here.
And that explain why I'm not a fanboy opening paragraph pops up all the time, it just seems really telegraphed now.
This is a Playstation site and while I'm not saying a lot of people here are rabid fanboys, a lot of them are big time Sony fans/defenders and that is why most people wont complain about such articles.
I really hope you see where I'm coming from. I read every single article, everyday, and enjoy your writing. I just truly felt like I had read something like this very similar at least twice in the past month or so.
"quit yer bitchin" is the type of stuff that you guys should frown upon. Not honest criticism from a long time reader.
One more thing, what has bothered me the most from your responses to criticism is when you use your writing skills (like I said before) to make someone look less credible. I'm all for you doing it to idiots who make stupid comments, but I've seen you respond to some comments from people who knew what they were talking about, but maybe completely were against what you were saying, in a sorta condescending way. Just what I feel, once again.

Now on the 360 side I have one game I love to play and that's it. It's the race sim Race Pro. And once GT5 comes out next year (early I hope), Forza and Race Pro will be forgotten. Forza 3 will not even hold a candle to GT5.
Basically my 360 is starting to be left out of the picture now, and it's probably good anyways as if I play it too much it will blow up and start a fire. Lol's
E3 is gonna be absolutely dominating for Sony. I just hope Microsoft doesn't steal another amazing exclusive as I have read some rumours that Kojima may port the next MGS over to the 360 as well and I'm afraid Microsoft may pull another trick out of their ass as they did last E3 with FF. Let's hope not. Hey their in desperate mode now. Wouldn't suprise me!
Anyways with such a huge exclusive list for the rest of this year and beyond, it's all but over for 360 xbot fans. Alan Wake and Forza 3 are the only exclusives that will open peoples eyes at E3. Other then that Microsoft will just be pissing in the wind. Oh well, 360 owners will just have to force themselves to get in the real hardcore gaming world and buy a PS3. It's inevitable!!

Am waiting to buy the GTAIV DLC compilation disc for my 360 this fall, till then,it's not gonna get much play.

Since when did anyone with more than two brain cells bumping into each other on a regular basis care which video game console a celebrity owned or preferred? Are our purchasing decisions being made for us by celebrities now? If that's the case for anyone, then it's a sad, sad day indeed. Seriously, does anyone care one iota whether any celebrity uses PS3 instead of 360? Really? Really!? I mean, really?

Seriously though, I'm with you Highlander. Celebrity endorsements are pretty meaningless to me as a gamer. But, there is an argument to be made that celebrity usage statistics may be indicative of larger market trends within certain demographics... what one person plays with is less important that the whole picture. While I don't need the ps3 to be number 1, I do want it to sell well. Celebrity usage can only contribute to sales, as there are a very large amount of north americans who allow these things to factor into their decision making.

I am quite happy with my PS3 I think the games I played and I will are exclusive except for POP and SF4 but killzone valkyria chronicle MGS4 ratchet and clank and the future ones I think I made the good choice but their is good games on Xbox too and I think microsoft just shut up for the last few month in order to make a fu**ing big E3 they says nothing imagine they arrived with a lot of gameplay vidéo of a lot of games they will kill Sony if they have nothing more than they already told us.

Will people please stop spreading this misinformation? The PS3 may be third in sales this generation, but not by a wide margin. It hasn't sold as fast as the PS2 did, but it has outsold (Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox) or is outselling (360, SNES, N64) almost every system that has ever been sold. And at $400-600.
p.s. Also, the 360 (unfortunately ;)) isn't going the way of the Dreamcast either.

Not to mention the constant flow of FUD from MS, then we come to the whole purchased exclusives crap. MS tried this same bull with BluRay and all it earned them was a hole in their wallet.
No, I don't think that MS have done good this generation at all. They do have many very good games and ideas, but their execution on these ideas and their product quality has been shockingly bad.
Lastly their tactics have actually damaged the HD gaming market, delaying the onset of both BluRay and HD gaming. Two years ago MS started bleating about digital distribution of HD media, they started this at about the time they realized that HD-DVD was dead in the water. Microsoft did this not because they truly think that digital distribution of real HD is viable outside a tiny % of uber premium broadband customers, but because it damaged BluRay and Sony. For Microsoft the Xbox360 is not about games, it's not about gamers, it's not about quality, it's about controlling the living room the way in which they have controlled the desktop for decades. The logical thing for MS to have done two years ago was to swallow their pride and consider a BluRay external drive. Remember it was already too late to include either HD-DVD or BluRay in the 360's design since they'd launched. So now they're stuck with a console that can't to HD video, and a digital distribution strategy that requires tomorrow's broadband infrastructure to be here yesterday. In the mean time they cynically continue to buy games out from under the Playstation brand (yes FFXIII, I am looking at you) and snipe at Sony. At the end of the day though, their message is hollow.
Sorry, I don't see the good that they're doing, perhaps I'm missing something?

I'm waiting until after E3, but something that has been tugging at the back of my brain is that if all is quiet on the Software front, could that mean that a new system is in development? MS has made their money, but if they want to keep competing with the PS3's ever growing Graphical power, they're going to have to come up with something sometime within the next 8 years.
I hope I'm wrong and there isn't a Xbox 360.2 or the Xbox 720 on the horizon...but this silence from MS kind of has me worried.

That is exactly what will happen with the 360 scene. 360 people brag about the sales of 360 versus the PS3 and about how successful they are. Blind is what they are. Microsoft announced a loss of over 1 BILLION dollars in the warranty program nearly TWO years ago and the RROD problem still exists. That company is losing more money on hardware sales than Sony is at 46 dollars a pop in the hole on each console sold. 33% failure rate for 360 machines is a ton of coin lost.
I figure in a year or two Microsoft will announce their next machine and force it down everyones throats, and once it comes out, they will abandon the 360 platform just like they did the original Xbox. That's Microsofts way of doing business.
Build a piece of crap and they will come!!

So, PS3 has been a slow burn. There are many reasons for this. Media bias, Microsoft FUD, slower than expected HDTV adoption rates thanks to a tanking world economy and so on... However PS3 continues to sell well at the higher price, and the games are truly arriving. No longer is it a case of wait and see, they're coming, no, they're here. This year. They started arriving last year. The slow burn of the PS3 may be about to accelerate. Fueled by the best HD gaming lineup - perhaps the best gaming line up over all - the PS3 will be strong this year, and if Sony also manages to bring a new smaller, lighter, slim PS3 along with a $100 price reduction. Well, that slow burn could well look like the burning of a fuse on a stick of dynamite as the PS3 market explodes.
On the assumption that a $299 PS3 sells like hot cakes, and the games continue to come and increase in quality, what is Microsoft's answer? They already sell their console for as little as $199, so they have that much less room to drastically reduce their price. hey may already have reached their peak in terms of game capability on the 360, in which case the cupboard may well be very bare for them. Sony would well drop the price of the PS3 by another $50 in autumn 2010. Unless the games dry up, I just don't see anything stopping the PS3 from becoming a video game juggernaut for the next two to three years.
To some extent I wonder whether this is the hare and the tortoise, and Sony is the tortoise. Microsoft may find that being the hare and leaning out to an early lead does not guarantee victory - in any race.

Seriously though. I've said it before that MS has been too quiet. However it's very, very, VERY, unlike Microsoft to a) be quiet about anything, b) mainatin secrecy for more than two nano-seconds and c) not be conspicuously blabbing in their more friendly media outlets about how they're gonna kill Sony at this year's E3 [see point a)].
I do agree that they could have something up their sleeve, but there is a lot that Sony could easily have in store that has not been talked of, or has simply been underplayed as well. We'll have to wait and see, but without an uncharacteristically quiet Microsoft holding an ace or two up their sleeve, I think Ben's analysis of the upcoming year(s) and this year's E3, is spot on.

I thought the eyetoy was fun a while back and the time-crysis thing with the guns. the motion sensing pad and the golfing game thing. All those things were very unique to the ps2. Do you think the ps3 will be trying out any things like that? just curious cause way back i was a sucker for that stuff.

The sixaxis controller has pretty decent motion control, games like Flower and High Velocity Bowling make good use of it. Ratchet and Clank Future : Tools of destruction made good use of it as well. Linger in the Shadows was interesting too.
SingStar for PS3 comes with Microphones and a wireless microphone is coming soon. Singstar itself now features voice control as well as compatibility with Singstar game discs for the PS2 opening up the song library quite a bit.
Buzz uses hand held 'buzzer' controllers for quiz games. Some PS3 games allow keyboard and/or mouse control (Unreal Tournament for example).
Of course there are all the instruments for the various music games and the upcoming skateboard for Tony Hawk. So there is plenty of control innovation on the PS3, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Oh, one last thing, Time Crisis 4 is a PS3 game that uses a light gun (Guncon3)...so there is even that as well.
