Ben's Week In Review: October 4

After TGS and an onslaught of reviews, things have lightened up just a little, even though October remains quite full. Onwards into the holidays!

Dante's Inferno is like God of War? GOOD.

While I still believe something like Quantum is a blatant rip-off of another popular title - Gears of War - I think Dante's Inferno could stand on its own as a fantastic action title. Of course, it takes a lot of cues from SCEA's God of War franchise but then again, who really cares? I completely agree with what EA said when they addressed this issue; they considered any comparisons to GoW to be "a great compliment," and well they should. If it's even close to any GoW I've ever played, it's going to rock. And besides, we need to remember that in every creative-oriented entertainment venue, the designers and artists involved do learn from their peers and colleagues. It's absolutely impossible to have an entirely original idea at all times, especially when we've seen as many games as we have in the past few decades. Besides, EA's project really is its own animal; it's based on Dante Alighieri's classic novel, after all, and there appears to be some seriously awesome stuff. Did you check out that gameplay montage? It looks sick.

I will soon be doing an editorial on how EA has really turned things around this generation. There was a time when they could do no right ('cough' 2007 'cough') but these days, they've been impressing me as of late. Gimme Dead Space 2!

Maybe Square-Enix are just slow starters...

Well, they usually are. But while we haven't seen anything from them just yet, we know Final Fantasy XIII is on the way and Final Fantasy Versus XIII is also turning a lot of heads (await the big detail unveiling early next year). Then there's the action/RPG Nier, which looks extremely promising. But perhaps most important of all are the 8 new IPs that are in development. Many have accused Square-Enix of milking certain franchises and cashing in over and over without providing something new. FF fans will be quick to remind everyone that all the FF installments are all entirely different (and that's 100% true) but of course, those are few and far between. In the meantime, we'd like to see Square-Enix produce several new titles, and although I know they're including Eidos projects, at least they're still new. I'll be interested to see what they have in store for us over the next few years, and I maintain my firm belief that FFXIII will be a bona fide insta-classic. Oh, but it's true.

Personal gaming update

Well, as I was review-crazy for most of September, I haven't done much for myself, besides play a few old classics here and there, plus work my way through Katamari Forever. Tonight, I been playin' some Castlevania: Symphony of the Night; getting my Crissaegrim, Rings of Varda, Wizard Hat and all that good stuff to make myself totally invincible as I always do. Just fun, you know. Arnold has Uncharted 2 and is almost done with it so you can expect a review pretty damn soon, but I gotta wait until the game comes out on the 13th. I'll also probably get Brutal Legend on the same day, just because it looks great; there are some control issues with the demo, but the entire premise rules. Being a metal fan and a Tim Schafer fan, I knew it would. It's just gonna be awesome and I implore all of you not to ignore it just because Uncharted 2 is out on the same day. Yeah, the latter should certainly take precedence but damnit, Jack Black and Schafer's crazy mind are so worth a look.

I also just played the Need for Speed: SHIFT demo, which was pretty intense. I think I might want to play that one, too, so perhaps it goes on the Christmas list along with Halo 3: ODST. Other than that, I don't have much to add. The girl thing is done for a while. Heh.

I've spent the day watching College football and being obsessed with Remote Play on my PSP/PS3. It's such a great experience having 2 Tvs displaying sports while still being able to do stuff on my PS3 thanks to my PSP.

PJ Monsters Deluxe is the most addictive game I've played thus far for the PSP. Being the moron that I am I just realized today that PJ Monsters for the PS3 is capable of RemotePlay.

I assumed you were referring to the device you can purchase which holds your PSP so you're able to watch things on your PSP without holding onto it. I just lean my PSP up against a Pillow if needed.

No like the Sony Base Station, it like hooks up to your Wi-Fi, and sends it to any internet signal your PSP is in contact with, and it can record your Tivo shows to your PSP , and share your computers info with your PSP, and for the whole holding up your PSP, i bought a Rocketfish see through play through case that doubles as a stand.

There is one on the sony style website for $250. really expesnive, but you can watch tv anywhere as long as you have wifi. Which is really cool, i just wish that it wasn't as expensive. Too many sweet games coming. personal gaming update i broke my dualshock 3, well not broke but ruined it. i played burnout paradise to much and now the r2 button is a little lose. switching between batman and ghostbusters right now. i want uncharted 2 and brutal legends. oh then ratchet and clank. i still want to pick up ultimate alliance 2. still need like 42 events in burnout for my elite license.

i know there are more games i want to play but even for the next month i dont know if i could handle all the games i want/need to play.

anyone see the unchated commercial? good stuff

That sucks about your controller. I'm noticing a lot off ware and tear on my left analog. I picked up another controller a few months ago when it was on sale just in case my original decides to die.

The Uncharted commercial was great, glad to see Sony keeping up with the commercials.

Dante's Inferno has peaked my interest and U2 will have to wait until I complete the first one. Brutal Legend in just over a week and I am looking very forward to that one after trying the demo.
Ben, definitely try Need for Speed: Shift. That game is seriously addicting. I've taken a few days break to try some other games but will get back to it before the weekend is over. Need to get hustling on the world circuit tour. I got Katamari Forever and will probably try that tomorrow. Afraid of getting addicted to yet another game. Damn the fun! Damn it all!

On topic: I'm working through Half-Life 2, but playing it immediately after Uncharted is only reminding me how superior third-person games are to FPSs. I'll be playing Heavenly Sword next, unless I get U2 for my birthday.

U2 and AC2 are the games that I will be getting for sure . Maybe R&C too . But I haven't played any of the earlier installments , so I don't know if I will enjoy it as much .

LittleBigplanet continues to show how amazing it is!

It's such a party game, today I had a bunch of friends over, some online some offline. Got together and played some good levels

i was going to get brutal legend.
but coming out on the same day as uncharted 2 has killed it, plus operation flash point dragon rising will also be out here on the 15th.
since nothings comming out after the 15th till R&C november 5th depending on if ive finished uncharted 2 and opperation flashpoint i may get it.

We got tekken 6 coming out @ the end of the month. . . Lol. U2 is gonna have to wait, still have to beat the first one on crushing difficulty and nail resistance 2 a couple'a more times. Most def i'll get R N C. . . But not anytime soon.

I'm pretty surprised over the footage of Dante's Inferno. They've come very close to GOW experience, which is what they clearly aimed to do. I wonder how the multiplatform development will affect the final product.

Let's also hear it for Tecmo's Team Ninja. They're one of the few multiplatform developers that have offered a proper service, albeit delayed, to both platforms, and this has to do with the Sigma Engine that they've specifically developed for the ps3 (which NGS, NGS2, and, from what I hear, Quantum runs on). I'd like to see a psxextreme review for NGS2. I'm sure it won't get a huge reception as the 360 original didn't get one. The story is laughably replaceable, but the game still packs the best action out of any beat'um up this or any generation...Well, maybe next to DMC3se.

I'm very eager for the Arnold's review of U2. The game is pretty much a done deal, but when I get the game depends a lot on the final verdict from psxextreme.

Did you know that the original got a psxextreme rating of 9.0? I remember agreeing with the original score back then, but after playing some of the best games that have come out since then, the game kind of floated to the top for me.

I'm just excited to see a game I'm looking for to so much receiving such high grades. I want to see Uncharted 2 become one of the highest-rated games of all time, and at this rate it looks as if it may be just that.

With my personal gaming update, I'm saying I don't think Molyneaux's idea of downloading 1 episode free of Fable 2 will eventually lead you to buy the rest is working well. Because, I played the first episode enjoyed when the guy was a kid but when he grew up, it was a disaster, he looks ugly and just didn't fit. I prefer having the kid taking on the whole adventure, like a Zelda type of guy. And I don't think I would like to have the rest of the episodes, cause just when you're into the game you'd be held up and prompted to download episode 2. You would've lost interest by the time you're done downloading.

I'm sorry Peter Molyneaux, but I don't think your idea is such a great idea. I'll hate to see other devs taking on this idea.

I was on the fence with Brutal Legend because Jack Black can either be really funny or really annoying. I was quite impressed with the demo and I will be getting it. Bummer it releases against Uncharted 2.
I have been playing the Uncharted demo with a friend, we still haven't totally figured it out but add me if you want to play. cleversignin on PSN.
Also liking the Lost Planet 2 demo if you are into that.

U2 and MW2 are going to be neck and neck for goty (with U2 having much more quality) although I think The Conduit will probably demolish them both and every other game this year.

Unchaarted 2 abd brutal legend will dominate I'm hoping unchrated wins game of the year and brutal legends sound track is pretty badass but it was missing something................METALLICA!!!! How the hell they put a crappy one hit band like ratt n leave out the epicness of the greatest bands of all time seriously at least put ride the lighting lmao......aww man it would have been amazing if jack black could have face a evil lars ulrich and he would keep saying ill sue u(insider mettallica joke) but anyways ill stop my useless rant lolz

Actually, Ratt had more than one hit and there are a crapload of bands that could have easily been in Brutal Legend. I'm guessing that Ratt fits with the mood of when the song goes on. Trust me, when I say that no one is going to be 100% happy with all of the song choices. There are just way too many "good" songs that could have been used.
