Your Game System Sucks

View Large ImageOkay, okay. On a more serious note, I find it funny how heated console debates still get these dates. I remember back in the eighth grade, I used to get into arguments with friends over which system was the best: the Nintendo 64 or the PlayStation. The PlayStation was always my pick of choice, because as much as I loved the N64, the line-up of quality games was so spread apart that it made owning that system painful. Likewise, to bounce backward a few more years, even in the fourth and fifth grade, I remember arguing with my cousin that my SNES was better than his Genesis (though, in retrospect, both consoles were equally awesome). Oddly enough, my classes weren't very divided as far as console preferences went, almost all of us had an SNES.
This console debating went on as far as the last generation, when the PlayStation 2 had the Xbox and the GameCube as its primary competitors. As an owner of all three units, my GameCube saw very little game time, as it suffered from the same curse the N64 did. The Xbox got a pretty decent amount of game time with Halo, Project Gotham Racing, and a few other games. But the PlayStation 2, naturally, got the vast majority of game time, since it had all of the games that mattered. I'd say, it wasn't up until three or four years ago when I stopped caring and debating about what console is the best. Something inside of me just died, I guess...it's hard to explain.
But the reason why I bring you this piece is to explain to you why your console of choice isn't the flawless magical box of awesomeness you think it is. In fact, the entire point of this piece is to focus on only the weaknesses of the three consoles. And I'll start with the Nintendo Wii...
The Nintendo Wii Sucks
Released back in 2006, the Nintendo Wii is the sleeper hit no one saw coming. When overpriced PlayStation 3 sales ended on eBay, the Wii's sales only kept going and going, well into 2007. But the Nintendo Wii sucks. Unfortunately for people who only own a Nintendo Wii, they are stuck playing a system with impotent hardware incapable of producing visuals that can even outdo the original Xbox.
View Large ImageIt has a downright embarrassing network/online setup, with a cumbersome user interface, making great online multiplayer games almost non-existent. Moreover, whatever happened to the wave of third-party support that publishers said they'd give the Wii? It never happened. Instead, all the Wii gets is chop-jobs like a really ugly looking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare port, Need for Speed: Nitro, and a cartoon-like version of Madden NFL. Sure the Wii has a few great games, but they're released so far apart, that it makes me wonder if there are any gamers out there who only own a Wii and defend the system like it's the greatest console of all time, because it isn't. It isn't even good. In fact, if there's one console out there that should've gotten the brute of all the "no games" line that the PlayStation 3 was on the receiving end of, it's the Nintendo Wii.
Moreover, the Wii has become a console for exercising and not a console for gaming. Staying fit is great and all, but exercising with a videogame console is not playing videogames, and it does not make you a gamer. Playing The Biggest Loser on your Nintendo Wii does not help the image of your console and does not help attract a newer demographic. Nintendo was promised third-party support, but it did not expect the lack of quality third party games, because all it got was just a bunch of random kiddy games. Don't believe me? Check out the list of Nintendo Wii games that launched this year, and tell me how many of them are actually proper games, and not something for the "casuals" - and I use that word very loosely. Just because you own a Nintendo Wii and a Wii Fit, does not make you a gamer, much like playing word games on your Blackberry doesn't either. But I'm not done yet, I have one final question: Nintendo, when the hell are you going to introduce some seriously powerful new franchises? Pokemon, Zelda, and Mario are great...but the folks at Sony and Microsoft are constantly giving us something new, while you're still stuck in the early 90s. Wake up, already.
The Xbox 360 Sucks, Too
Moving onto the Xbox 360. It was the first to launch and kicked off the next-generation back in 2005. Unfortunately, the Xbox 360 is an abysmal piece of hardware that is so prone to failure that almost every time I've visited a Best Buy location, I've seen somebody returning an Xbox 360 and claiming a new one with a warranty. In fact, my best-friend is on his third X360, and a friend of Ben's is on his fifth. Somehow, Ben remains lucky with his original launch unit, and he's certainly one of the few. But of course, it's the online stories of people on their fifth, sixth, and some even tenth Xbox 360s that have absolutely appalled. The horror stories of dealing with Microsoft, especially after they send you a defective replacement, it's just not right. As of lately, build quality of the Xbox 360 seems to have improved considerably, but reports of failing new consoles still continue to exist, albeit in much smaller numbers.
View Large ImageLet's discuss yet another facet of hardware annoyances; Microsoft is absolutely insane to charge such a ridiculous amounts of money for things like an HDD or network adapter - hardware that shouldn't cost a penny more than $50. And as great as Xbox Live is, having to pay $50 a year for it, on top of not getting even slightly reduced prices on downloadable content is still a rip-off to me, no matter how good the service is. On that note, it's extremely annoying to have to buy a console, and spend more money buying accessories that it should've come with out of the box. There's also the size restrictions Microsoft slaps on the XBL Arcade stuff -- just get rid of it, since you keep raising the damn thing every week. It's up to 2GB now, up from the original 150MB limit.
Then, there's the hardware offering itself. Selling a system without a hard drive has put a great strain on numerous developers who wanted to utilize the hard drives for better streaming, but could not do it because they knew that a certain million amount of people have Xbox 360's without hard drives. Good job, Microsoft. And how about penalizing people who use their own hard drives with the X360? That's pretty lame.
Also, what the hell happened to Microsoft this year? All the X360 got was Halo 3: ODST, which is just a reskinned Halo 3 with a new campaign - an expansion pack, of sorts. And Forza 3, while great, isn't exactly a system selling blockbuster here. I feel like Microsoft is slowly beginning to suffer from the same illness as Nintendo - they have almost nothing new to offer, as far as first-party goes. They bought out RARE, and that turned out to be a colossal waste. They released two new Halo games this year, both of which sold great, but lacked any substance and innovation - which the series is in dire need of, since it's been stagnant for a while. Ultimately, the games are what justify a console, and right now, the Xbox 360 is not fairing very well in this case.

Otherwise decent article Arnie! There's only one reason for the crappy ports that do appear these days, however, and that's a lazy dev who hasn't cottoned on to the best way to do multiplats FOR EVERYONE. Which is from PS to 360, natch. Also if the creator of a game doesn't want to do a PS3 version-don't let someone else do it as it's always crappy-look at ROB and , to a FAR lesser extent Bayonetta.
Sony offer help to every dev working on the PS3 so apart from the arcitechture being too hard I think you're right about most things here-rememver the 360 didn't try anything new and, yes, with hinsight more RAM upfront would have helped PS3 but at least Sony tried, no?
And yes, console ways suck-and tell Ben as I think his Wii hate will give him a seizure one day! Tell him to avoid them or something!

Anybody who hasn't touched a controller in his life after reading your article Arnold, will pick the PS3, though they all suck.
In the Wii section its very noticeable the emphasis there is the Wii has kiddie games, limited amount of games and its not really for a gamer. Thus the nogamer will definitely skip it.
In the 360 section, its very obvious apart from all the issues, RROD remains the worst and again the about-to-be-a-gamer will not want his first ever console to die quick.
In the PS3 section, there's really not an issue that stands out to cause the about-to-be-a-gamer to disregard it.
So all in all, though all the 3 consoles suck, PS3 looks more attractive.

But seriously, my only LEGIT gripe on this list was the PS3's price point at launch. There is no defense of a system when it's more expensive then a large portion of users TV's. But since this is resolved, time to move on.
With the HD cables, I don't see the problem with that. You can find a set of good HDMI cables for 5-10 bucks. A small price to pay for such an investment.
Yes, the lack of backwards compatibility is an issue to some, but not to me. I have moved on from the PS2 generation.
Home. Yes, to some, it's a place that is a disappointment. To others it's not. Me? 50/50. I check it out everytime a new space drops, but that's about it.
Exclusives. Why is it such a deal that Grand Theft Auto and Final Fantasy went to the 360? A gaming company did what it needed to do. Such is business. Such is life. Yet folks around the internet have it in a different light.
Multiplatform titles could be considered a problem. There is no reason why all titles across the PS3 aren't superior in some form or fashion. Every PS3 game should have screen capture and Youtube upload for example. As far as the graphics go, yes, the PS3 should be as equal if not superior to the 360.
When it comes to the internet browser, that is actually one of the most used features on my PS3. I check this site daily from my PS3 in my Great Room, with little to no problems. If the PS3 web browser does not meet my needs, I go to my laptop. The PS3 browser is a convience I enjoy.
Anyways. Good article, I enjoyed reading it.

HOME could still do with masses of improvement... It still doesn't feel very professionally done (poor 3D engine and the like); want my avatar to be able to do more; like Nathan Drake, climb over things and be more active within the environment.
Would be nice to have an first person view as well as a 3rd person.
Should create an online development kit where community members can make their own spaces (said this before); the most popular spaces voted by the users can have a permanent home for as long as they remain in the top 10; with improvements and innovations etc.
They could do so much more; I don't know what they are doing and what they are talking about in those meetings; but I always feel they are missing the point of it all...

The unwilling multiplat devs make it seem like less RAM is PS3's main issue, basically cause they can get the work done EASILY with the inherent RAM on the 360. Meanwhile Naughty Dog has also proven they can get the work done by using the CELL. Its not really about RAM is the unwillingness and lack of motivation by the devs.

RE: SD cables, if you owned a PS2 and an HDTV when you bought your PS3, you probably already owned HD cables that would work. Sony can't include every sort of cable (and SD cables are a must), though I'd rather they include an HDMI cable than an ethernet cable.

Arnold you could have added the issue in there that the X360's controller can only be used up to 30ft. away (compared to the PS3 & Wii's superior 50ft. plus range)

Except the DS3 doesn't require batteries/battery packs. Lowkey is right about the lithium battery eventually dying, though I doubt you could kill one every 9 months.

Sony really does need to help these 3rd party devs. Only a hand-full of them got it down. Infinity Ward, 2k sports, EA's studios (mostly), Treyarch, and R*...Thats all I can think off.

This might sound weird to you guys, but Gaming Consoles are like children to me; you gotta hate to love them. Meaning, you gotta discipline them, with love.
What I believe you did Arnold, was that you single-handedly pointed out every major to little weakness in every console, and at the same time, told ways of doing what needs to be done, in order to not do it again.
That's what I believe I got from this article.
I love all my systems, and for sure, all three have wonderful strengths and weaknesses. The difference though, is one can go away, little by little.

u can also use this technique to swap out for a larger hdd, then from your flash drive or external hdd, after you format your new bigger hdd, load all your files back onto the new hdd!

honestly i dont think theres enough paper, ink or lead in the universe to list every single thing sony has made exclusive to the US.
with M$ or nintendo, whats available in the US is available in Italy is available in Spain is available in Australia.
its available EVERYWHERE!, none of this region exclusive BS.

look at the limited editions of halo 3 ODST or forza 3 there all high quality fancy bling bling things. true collectors items.
now lets have a look at the uncharted 2 limited edition, all it is, is a foldout cardboard envelope containing the game and a few exclusive DLC.

I'd like the developers to make HD versions of the Ps2 games instead of having backwards compatibility.

if so use a HDMI cable, otherwise get a HDMI to VGA adapter.
VGA is the blue port on the back of your laptop.
any computer store or ebay have them.
actually im not sure if that would work, those ports are normally outputs not inputs.
since there used to connect your laptop to a larger screen.
try it i guess, or best thing to do would be to ring the manufacture of your laptop they would be able to tell you.

I would love a DS3 but I agree with World why pay the same price for a controller rather get a game.
@xnonsuchx agree w/the whole B/C if people really wanted it they should of purchased a console @ launch or find a used one off of ebay of something. Ya launch consoles were pricy but well worth it.

You forgot to mention the lack of decent launch titles.
Anyone who paid £450+ on launch and didn't get either Resistance or Warhawk was basically f***** for the first 6 months.
Just my two cents.

Totally agree that the DS3 needs a price drop and allowing custom soundtracks on every game would be the last hurdle for sony to clear imho.
I could care less about cross-game chat, gotta give the xbots something to justify their 50 bucks with.

-launch titles.
-cheap game ports.
-backwards compatibility.
wii problems:
tacked on waggle controls.
very few good games (like 5).
terrible online.
weak hardware.
no inbuilt lan port (WTF).
360 problems:
RELIABILITY STILL A PROBLEM.
apart from halo not that many exclusives.
price tag on everything.
online may be good but still full of @$$holes.

Also what is it with the advertising? "It only does everything". Well, that's telling the public nothing. Having a PS3 with all these flowers and streamers flowing from it. Are they advertising a Wii?
What about some kick ass uncharted 2 adverts on the TV with big explosions and sexy Chloe.
People don't need to know it does everything, they just need to know it gives you the best games in the world bar none!
Everytime I go to the local games store all I see is Brutal Legend, MW2 or Wii Sports posters.
Understated is fine but this is like Sony is embarrassed having to try and sell their goods.
Give us a bit of oomph Sony!!!

The "it only does..." campaign wouldn't have been my choice but we aren't the target now, are we? They'll be after the kids market for Xmas as much as owt so I kinda get why they need to show all it can do as my kids always store vids and games on all their devices from phones and ipods to PV and PS3 , 360 and Wii. My son has four 16gig mem cards for his PSP FFS! Full of photos, tunes and vids!
My teenage daughter uses the DSi and PS3 to store pictures and self made videos and upload them to Facebook from mates houses or when she can't use a PC-and they all like Vidzone and want it expanded as it's such an intuitive system. So I get the "ecerything" approach even if they could showcase the games more. Thing is the new US Montage ad does what you ask for as does the current U2 ad here-they are listening and, tbh, the new ads are WAY better than what we'd got used to from Sony and are superior to the geberal 360 ads we have right now for Skyplayer(waste of time)and the nodescropt and even more pointless "music" ads.
They're getting betterbut could really do with getting more pushy on 3rd party multi ads fr me as well as pushing games from their own stable better-I've not seen many Eyepet or even a R&C advert yet even and thought I really would have. Still, they're doing better than I can rememver right now even if the US ads were a million times better than ours in the UK. Both the Montage and U2 "girlfriend" ads are class.

What can I say but you dedicated an entire page to the PS3, and only a few paragraphs to the Wii and 360. Some of your PS3 complaints go a bit to far as well. You never complained about the crappy browser on the Wii, or the lack of motion sensing on the 360 controller. You never mentioned bombardment of crappy hardware the Wii keeps letting 3rd party companies release. Instead you complain about every little thing you can think of about the PS3. Why is the lack of an HDMI cable that upsetting when none of the others offer it either? Why is the industry trend to go multi-platform Sony's fault, when we still get the content? Why does exclusivity matter that much anymore? All games should be released on all systems and optimized for each (not ported). That is the real issue, not Sony. And Home offers more than the Wii and the 360 combined, and it is the newest with a lot of room to grow!
SURE The PS3 has its problems. Sure all the consoles (in history) have had issues. But it seems like you just wanted to complain about the problems we all know the PS3 has and look like the good guy by listing the complaints of the other systems first. I don't buy it. Try to be more BALANCED with your opinion pieces, offer the same amount of issues between all the consoles, or don't bother at all.

But in my IMO I think Sony taking out the now missing "other OS" in the new slims should've been left in.
