Ben's Week In Review: November 29
Well, I guess the holiday season is officially here...again. Does the world suddenly cast Haste when you reach 30?
I accept Lords of Shadow as a Castlevania title
In what I considered to be one of the more interesting stories of the past week, we learned that Konami was initially hesitant to give Lords of Shadow the "Castlevania" title because they weren't sure how this move would be received by the fans. After all, it's a fairly significant removal from past entries, as it's clear they're producing a game more similar to the likes of God of War or even Devil May Cry. And while I still say that no CV will ever top Symphony of the Night, I have to admit to myself that 2D side-scrolling adventures (as beautiful and accomplished as they can be) are dead. Therefore, I accepted the idea when Konami took the franchise 3D in the last generation and I accept the shift again right now. Why? Because if you don't keep up in this industry, you fall behind and die.
And I don't know about you guys, but I don't want to see the Castlevania series die out, which it is currently in danger of doing if Lords of Shadow flops. It's clear the 2D productions are vastly superior but that doesn't mean they can't produce a fantastic next-gen action game. I have every confidence they can do it, and I'm looking forward to the effort.
I'll just ask it: why would ANYONE buy a Xbox 360 right now?
I own both consoles and no, I'm not giving up the 360. I still need it for the next Gears and Alan Wake (but besides that, I'm not sure what else I want for it). That being said, in looking at the current situation, if I were a consumer seeking a video game console, how in God's name would I end up with the 360? Same price. Live costs, the PSN does not and if you do the research, the PSN has more fantastic downloadable exclusives, both services have Netflix, and the community sizes are comparable now (despite what Microsoft says). The PS3 exclusives have clearly outstripped everything else - even the mainstream media has shown this to be true to just about everyone; the Spike TV Video Game Awards correctly put Uncharted 2: Among Thieves at the head of the list - and oh yeah, it's a freakin' Blu-Ray player. A damn good one, too. It's a million times more reliable - by now, everyone is aware of the catastrophe that is the 360 hardware - it has connectivity with a handheld device, and the controllers that use Lithium batteries are always superior to those that use standard AA batteries, regardless of personal preference.
There. So is it any surprise at all that the PS3 is coming out on top at retailers thus far in the holiday season? Consumers aren't stupid, you know. This is all pretty cut and dry right now.
Personal gaming update
So Assassin's Creed II is my new addiction and I never expected it to be this long. For those who don't know, if you wish to do everything in the game (and of course, I do), I figure this game could last a good 40 hours. I'm already like 26 hours in and I'm not even to Venice yet. I just love everything about this sequel and I will stand by my 9.4 review until the day I die; this is just so unbelievably impressive in so many ways. When I'm done, I'll return to my former addiction, Dragon Age: Origins, and finish that up. All of this should probably take me close to several weeks to complete, which is good timing, as I have a bunch of games on my Christmas list. I want Resident Evil 5, Left 4 Dead 2, and Halo 3: ODST. Oh, and I'm definitely hoping that Ubisoft's new unannounced title is another Prince of Persia. Love those games.
Other than that, I gots nothing new to add. I see Arnold's 350Z review is up and crazy in-depth, and I'm glad a lot of you appreciate it. I do miss my 350Z some days but overall, I'm extraordinarily happy with my M35x. It really is one of the most perfect cars for Connecticut; that's all I'll say. :)

(Kind regards someone that got stuck in FarCry 2 where I had to choose if he should save the friends or the church contact. I played over and over and over and over for hours, totally unable to handle that bloody attack - until I in pure desperation searched for help on the net, only to find out that I was *supposed* to loose that fight... *duh*)

I don't know, alot of 2d fighting games came out this year that would say otherwise, though I do admit they are kind of the acception to the rule
and that thing about microsoft claiming that they have more subscribers... I don't think they take into account just how many people there are who like me opened up 10 accounts and stopped playing them after my free trials expired

they are two completely different games. honestly though MW2 online is unparalleled. maybe not in overall quality but its completely fun and engaging. there is a reason this many people play it. but i picked up ac2 on friday and its really good. This game in my opinion is way better than AC which i did not like and havnt even finished. But i knew ubisoft would and could make a better game so i gave ac2 a chance and its fun. but they are different. if polish is what your looking for yea technically ac2 is better, but if your looking for an online expereince you'll keep going back to MW2 is where its at.
see the two games where they excel are completely dif. so its all about what you like. for instance Ben thinks ac2 is the better game, but what both bring, ill always play MW2 over ac2 as good as it is. because i can play with my friends, and theres just something about getting headshots against an actual player that is satisfying! ;)
plus the online experience is great.
with that said, that doesnt mean i favor online over single player. in fact im a single player type gamer but online is fun, especially with friends. Uncharted 2 is the best game ive ever played and i played it for the single player so...

i felt the same way bout RE5 when the demo hit. The key is to play with a friend who can handle the controls. The a.i. is terrible and yeah its babysitting! IF you play with a friend its a lot of fun. and as far as the controls go, in the demo i hated it. i dont know if as time went on (i just played RE5 and finished it bout a month ago) i thought id give it a try or if it was good and i just neglected to realize it. point is the tank controls do work, and cus of how the computer a.i. is it works out really well and pretty smooth if you use your quick swap buttons properly.
overall after dispising and talking so much crap about RE5 and the tank controls when the demo hit, i will totally stand corrected and take back everything i said bad about it. I absolutely loved the game! It was a lot of fun through and through!
I'd say buy it cus i think i seen it for like $40 bucks, but i could be wrong. if your that skeptical though id definiely buiy it when it hits those "bargain bins".

But seriously folks, believe it or not I had to take a miss on Uncharted 2 but it's already ready for xmas and it came a bit cheaper so that's okay. I'm absorbed in Dragon Age at the moment, my character looking quite a bit like me in fancy armor as I bicker with Morrigan and chuckle at Alistair. Good times... Now what am I gonna do about that massive backlog that needs to be beaten?

I still don't want a 360 b/c the games I want to play are on PC as well: Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction, and Alan Wake (not confirmed yet). L4D never did it for me. I like Halo but not enough to buy a 360. And Fable never interested me. Neither than Crackdown.
I just bought Batman: AA, Dragon Age: Origins, and Katamari Forever. All were on sale for Black Friday. Couldn't find InFamous on sale though. I really wanted that game. I spent about $100 in total on them all. I also got like 6 or 7 blu-ray movies. They were all about $10 each. Good Black Friday.

im only a few hours in but this AC2 is a big step forward. Its still the same setting looking back into your (desmond miles') ancestors history. But the way the story is told inside Ezio' world is much better. I felt like in the first one i was let down because i didnt feel the story from the assasins point of view. This time around theres great depth into the assasins life! But overall its still the same style gameplay but with beefed up attacks and weapons. and you can buy armor, medicines, weapons and so on... So far i enjoy it!

On the other hand, the upgrades are SO numerous, it just feels like a much richer and fuller experience. I guess maybe it depends on what exactly you hated about the first one...

But people in NZ (or my Auckland area) are still playing catch up to the world and the 'popular teens' I know have started getting Xbox 360's in one way or another.
Which is sad, I'm still the only avid PS3 owner/gamer in kilometers.

Still haven't completed story mode, but man the multiplayer is actually really fun
But still, the story mode is what's impressing me most. Such progression in story hasn't been reached since MGS4. What a nice tempo!

So I decided to start Uncharted 2 on Crushing difficulty thinking I'll get the infinite ammo & one-shot kill enabled and run through it, then this message popped up saying, I need to beat it on the current difficulty setting before I could enable, WTF??!!, same thing it said when I was playing on Hard.
Spec Ops in MW2 is crazy, not a walk in the park.

But, I spent last night playing GOW collections, particularly GOW. And I was mind blown. It's amazing how well this game has aged, albeit with remastered visuals. The finely tuned gameplay/difficulty, level/puzzle design, and pride of which this last gen game was obviously made with is better than that of any action adventurer out even NOW (with the exception of Ninja Gaiden Sigma which coincidentally is also a remastered last gen game). And I'm not exaggerating.
I think that has to do with how expensive it is to make games today. With all the resources spent on graphics, and online play, it's clear that some department, like level design, would get nerfed. It also has to do the audience. Games are being geared towards the larger casual mass market more so than before. I'm not saying games have gotten worse. On the contrary, I've had more fun, now, as an adult gamer, than I ever had as a teenager or a kid. And I'd even say, that some games like R&C:ACIT and GTA4 have even improved in those fundamental aspects. I guess the fear I have is that the pressure to make a game a commerical success these days, or even break even, maybe sapping the creative energy in the industry as a whole (with exception of Media Molecule and LBP). I am having more fun, but it's clear game makers aren't.

I also bought both uncharted games, along with a new 40 inch, 1080p Bravia, which means I can finally play my games on a real HD tv(I've been punishing my ps3 by playing it on a tv that can barely do 480p)
And since I want to give RPGs a try, before that new Final Fantasy game comes, I was wondering which rpg should I get, I was thinking between Demon souls or Dragon age origins?

I think in terms of overall polish and execution, Uncharted 2 has the edge. ACII still suffers from a tiny bit of erratic behavior in regards to the controls. On the other hand, considering the advanced nature of those controls, it's still a damn fine achievement.
Graphic-wise, nothing tops U2 but at least in terms of gameplay visuals, ACII is one of the best-looking games you'll ever see. Sound...both are just plain awesome. Great voice-acting (especially in U2), good story, and top-notch effects and music.
I think U2 is a touch more involving just because you really are playing a movie from start to finish, but for some people - like me - ACII can actually be almost more addictive, just because you want to get and do EVERYTHING. It's tough to explain if you haven't played it, I guess. :)

finally found out what the above desmonds bed means.
and a explanation on AC2s ending.
unbelievable how much detail is in there, and it also hints at where AC3 will take place.

The utter joy that I'm getting from climbing to the top of a building, turning on eagle eye and spotting the yellow target in a sea of red guards. Then jumping down to knife him in the back only to then grab a big axe off of a guard and then clobber then all to death.
It's very close to perfection!
The only thing close is jumping through that window in Uncharted 2 when the hotel is collapsing all around you. That was sublime.
I intended to play an hour of ACII last night but 5 hours later at midnight with only 5 hours to go until I needed to go to work I struggled to bed. It has an addictive quality that makes you want to just beat up another couple of guards or just do another one quick mission (or even just buy some art for your mansion).
Modern Warfare 2 was intense and an hour blast of that was usually enough for one night.
Uncharted 2 is probably the best game I've ever played combining the graphics, story and shooting. I wanted to savour that though so took it slowly.
Assassins Creed 2 however I just can't get enough of. It is up there with U2 as an overall package.
I traded the first AC game after the first mission so I never got into it but ACII is just so addictive and fun.
When you learn the counters and how to disarm the guards it is just so good to stick a couple of them with your hidden blades then disarm a brute with an axe and then just swing it around bashing everyone up.
The cut scenes in ACII aren't up to U2 standards but the world is deeper and there is so much more to do. Venice and Florence though look stunning especially from the rooftops.
You can do linear or you can wander off and just climb a few towers or do a few side missions.
Choice between U2 or ACII? Anyone with a PS3 needs to have U2 along with Killzone 2. They are the keepers. ACII is probably the best multi-platform game of the year!

I simply reply... "Well, buy the PS3 version of MW2 (for example)". I am met with nothing but silence, which is what I expected.
Sure, I miss playing games with them, but since my entire family plays on the PS3, I am set.
So no, not even Mass Effect 2, LFD2, or Alan Wake will get me back on that system.
