PSX Extreme Game Of The Year Awards 2009
| Pages: | | | 1 | | | 2 | | | 3 | | |
Another year has gone by and it's time once again to hand out our Game of the Year Awards. Welcome, and we hope you enjoy the rundown. You can recheck the list of nominees before starting, if you wish, but we've got you covered throughout this feature. We'll list out the nominees and then tell you which title is the winner, along with a brief explanation as to why it won. So now, without any more preamble or ado, here we go:
Achievement Awards
Best Graphics
Nominees
- Assassin's Creed II
- Killzone 2
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
- Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time
Winner: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
This is often a difficult category but we wasted no time in quickly handing the award to the only title that could possibly win: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. With some of the cleanest, crispest and most accomplished visuals you've ever seen in a video game, this is currently as close as one can get to "playing the action movie." Everything from the amazing character detail and animation to the luscious backdrops just shone. Killzone 2 was impressive as well, but this...this is a whole new level.
Best Music
Nominees
- Guitar Hero 5
- Shatter
- The Beatles: Rock Band
- Brutal Legend
- DJ Hero
- Flower
Winner: Brutal Legend
We admit; it was a "brutal" oversight not to have nominated this one initially, especially when it was bound to win. Not only are we big metal fans, but we also can't think of another game that has ever had such a sweeping, entirely satisfying licensed soundtrack. With so many of the old-school metal Gods and classic pieces of hard-hitting music, this is what really made the environment of Brutal Legend come to life. You just gotta love what Tim Schafer and Double Fine did with this one!
Best Sound Effects
Nominees
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Killzone 2
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
- inFamous
- Assassin's Creed II
Winner: Killzone 2
Shooters tend to have the most intense sound, so it's probably not surprising that it came down to Killzone 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. But Guerrilla's excellent FPS included such amazing effects; they put us in the midst of the action and made us jump with every wonderfully loud explosion or crack of gunfire. Along with the visuals, it was the effects that really pushed this one into the limelight and kept it there. Can you imagine not playing this one with a quality sound system? 'Cuz you really shouldn't have done that if you did.
Best Acting
Nominees
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
- Killzone 2
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Brutal Legend
- Assassin's Creed II
Winner: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
You know, if we did individual performance awards, we'd have to consider Mark Hamill as The Joker in Batman: Arkham Asylum and Jack Black as Eddie Riggs in Brutal Legend. But we wanted to award the best possible cast and that just had to go to Uncharted 2, where every last major character was fantastic. Led by Nolan North (Drake), Emily Rose (Elena) and Claudia Black (Chloe), we had professional talent for each and every major role. This is exactly the way all such ambitious projects should be in the future. Just a little note to all devs.
Best Writing
Nominees
- Assassin's Creed II
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Brutal Legend
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Winner: Batman: Arkham Asylum
This was extremely difficult because the story in Uncharted 2 was so wonderfully implemented. But really, the dialogue given to the characters in Arkham Asylum seemed singular, in that it captured the dark comic book style that allowed this particular asylum to leap off the screen. Perhaps it was the lunacy of The Joker combined with the way they wrote lines for Batman and other supporting characters; it all just came together so well. For the type of game it tried to be, you couldn't have provided a much better script.
Best Artistry/Art Direction
Nominees
- Demon's Souls
- Brutal Legend
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
- Assassin's Creed II
- Street Fighter IV
Winner: Assassin's Creed II
It came down to Uncharted 2 and Assassin's Creed II and after a little deliberation, we decided on the latter. Why? Well, there's little doubt that the artistry in U2 was unbelievable, but Ubisoft really went that extra mile in producing several of the largest, most intricately detailed city environments ever seen in video games. The attention paid to every tiny detail was downright amazing, from the NPCs realistically wandering the streets to even the most obscure yet still beautiful cornice of a random structure in Florence, they didn't miss one square inch. It was just...gorgeous.
Most Original/Innovative
Nominees
- Flower
- Braid
- Demon's Souls
- Shatter
Winner: Flower
Perhaps surprisingly, we found most of the innovation in the little downloadable titles that showed up on the PSN in 2009, which is why three of the four nominees are only available on the Store. Demon's Souls received some consideration but in the end, there's just nothing like thatgamecompany's Flower. I still remember seeing the lone flower show up on my screen, and for a minute or two, I was confused...am I supposed to do something? Then I hit the X button and I was on my way. The result? One of the most relaxing, rewarding and exceedingly unique gaming experiences ever. Play with the wind, guide the petals; it was almost...surreal.
Most Overlooked
Nominees
- IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey
- Demon's Souls
- Katamari Forever
- BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
- DiRT 2
- Red Faction: Guerrilla
Winner: BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
One could make an argument for just about any title in this category, but how many people have even heard of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger? How often does one of the best games of the year go almost entirely unnoticed, except by die-hard fans of the genre in question? Thing is, nowhere near enough people recognized the inherent quality in this flashy, old-school fighter, and while I know many of you wanted Demon's Souls to win this category, bear in mind that the game didn't sell badly. Oh, and it just won Game of the Year at GameSpot, so it's hardly "unnoticed" right now. BlazBlue just needs more love.
Most Anticipated Game
Nominees
- Final Fantasy XIII
- God of War III
- Bayonetta
- Gran Turismo 5
- Heavy Rain
Winner: Final Fantasy XIII
Considering the unbelievable 2010 lineup, you can probably guess that we talked for a while about this one. We were able to eliminate Bayonetta, God of War III, and Heavy Rain but we had to think long and hard when it came down to FFXIII and Gran Turismo 5. We're just such huge fans of both franchises but I guess it came down to this: we know both games will be great, but we know more about what to expect with GT5. We really have no idea what the FFXIII experience will be, primarily because each successive installment in the franchise feels brand new. And so, despite the stiff competition, we decided we want nothing more than this epic RPG.

I've been here for a month now, a month and a half, i'm not sure, and i have to say i really respect this community that you all have built here. I have been to many sites, previously i was at IGN and i really didn't like it to much honestly. I owe my friend actually for showing me this site and i have to say, it has grown on me.
I really love the atmosphere of the community here and really respect a lot of the more common faces here, like the ones mentioned by Ben and Arnold, and i have to say i really respect and admire you guys. I took the liberty to look back and get familiar with some older articles and comments and i really do respect the loyalty, especially by the ones listed, you guys have towards PSXE. I know I'm relatively new to the site and just started to become a more common face here by writing whenever i get a chance because PSXE has grown on me. I know i'm new but i hope to gain a familiarity with some of you all and hope to develop a close relationship with the community here and with Ben and Arnold, all you guys at PSXE.
Ben, I really respect and appreciate you guys at PSXE as journalists and as very outgoing people. I know I've only been here for a short while, but that's all that it's taken to really become a huge fan here. You guys have great articles, not to mention a kick a** sense of humor, i love it haha But i just like you guys to know that i plan on staying part of PSXE for a long time, i don't see myself going anywhere. I love the atmosphere, i love the readers here, there may be some bickering, but the overall attitude here and great and everyone is always friendly, and not to mention, because of you guys at PSXE. Out of all the communities i've been to, you guys are without a doubt the best i've seen.
I know i'm not a familiar face around here, but you'll start seeing me more often now (i havent been a bale to come on a few times because the holidays) because PSXE is now my new home. Thanks for all the great articles, and thanks to everyone here for providing some great conversation i really do love them so...lets keep the coming on 2010!
I hope everyone has a happy new year and hopefully start 2010 with a big bang!

Batman winning story doesn't feel right to me cause I really don't remember much of a story being there besides getting the Joker. Don't get me wrong it was an awesome game that built up really well to an anti-climactic ending and final boss

Otherwise, I'd have to agree with the awards, so far as I can tell, not having played most of the games yet.
p.s. Thanks, Ben/Arnold, for the shout-out.

Then out of nowhere some guy posted news from psxextreme and I was like "hey let's see!" And from that day I have never had to look at any other site. Sure some others for vids, but psxe's content is in whole different level. It's not your distant robot-like editors saying "hey here's this game, ok, bye bye." The staff at psxe are actually gamers and actually do enjoy these games lol. A lot of other sites to me feel like they're just in it for the MONEY and HYPE.
Great to see flower getting some awards here
That's the kind of stuff I like
Oh! And may Metal Gear Sunny live within all of us!
Thank you Ben, the staff, and all my comrades like World and Banky, ya'll are awesome!

I'd also like to thank you on behalf of Aftab. He's been temporarily barred from the comment section, but he'd like to thank Ben, Arnold, and John, and Shadow (if he is actually another guy which I'm pretty sure he is), and the rest of my (oops, I mean "his") good friends at psxextreme. This is Aftab's home away from home, and he checks it like a dozen times at work (give or take couple hundred more), and it was an awesome surprise to see the awards list this morning.

Demon dog got pissy with me when I took his pet needle away, so now he's chained away for the moment, & I've let "Nutcracker" out to play.
He's 10 X meaner than Demon Dog, and(though you can't tell in the downsized pic)he's twisted his head around so his snarling teeth are directly underneath those 2 dangling participles that he's trying to rip to shreds.
I guess I should have gotten him a metal jock strap, a rubber fang guard, and a 55 gallon drum of liquid Prozac for Christmas, instead of that now-dead Grizzly he's been gnawing on for the last couple days.

Yeah I was feeling the same way, but thanks to a few other post'ers here, last night I was able to find "AdBlocker Plus" for my Mozilla Firefox browser, and now I've totally wiped out every ad here except for that pretty blue PS3 contest(I want to see exactly how many more years till there's an actual winner)LOL.
Now, AdBlocker Plus is an open source program for Mozilla's Firefox browser, so I don't know if it would work for you
But if not, just try googling a site like MajorGeeks or Cnet dot com for a good "free ad blocker".
Just beware that a few unscrupulous a-holes have made fake ad blockers just so they can spam you themselves or sell your info to other a-holes, so make sure to read all the reviews for each one too, along with the # of downloads for each one(the more D/L's it's got, then all the better).
Hope that helps you out.

Also why would you have to take your computer in if it has a virus? Please tell me you don't buy your products at BestBuy and use their Geeksquad. I suggest a simple reformating of your computer, something that should be done several times a year regardless of viruses. Just backup everything and walla.

Literally resurrecting the fighting genre!
Amazing that they did. There was a lot of ways it could have failed badly...Just look at Mortal Kombat...
Uncharted 2 is just PACKED. It's the ideal game in every sense. Satisfies a deep/well produced story AND a multiplayer mode (with many modes/upgrades). Definitely the kind of game I want to play again
(LOVE THE SNOW LEVELS IN UC2, SICKENINGLY STUNNING!)
Anyway, Elena for the win! ;3

followed by a few: inFamous, SF4, BlazBlue, Batman, Ninja Gaiden Sigma2 and AC2, that was about it for me this year.
But still, Demon's Soul is bigger than the agregation of the rest for me this year. (soul level 186, 5th Cycle, and just turned platinum, 200+ hours)

I agree that BlazBlue was definitely overlooked,... it was an amazing fighting game. still play it along with Killzone 2 to this day.
Great picks, probably the only list of winners that i can wholly agree with.
hoping for an even more amazing year in 2010

You did not like the fact you had to purchase everything with souls? That's one of the things that adds so much replay value to the game O.o. I should really become a black phantom more often to step on all the weak people that play Demon's Souls and think it's not RPG of the year LOL

2010 is going to be hard picking GOTY with games like GT5, FFXIII, Heavy Rain, GOW3, KILLZONE 3 (If rumors are to be believed), COD7 (Vietnam), Mod Nation Racers, RESISTANCE 3 (you know it's coming), MGS Peace Walker & Rising, M.A.G., and you know there's going to be some titles that we would never expect to be so damn good...

First off, Graphics:
"This is often a difficult category but we wasted no time in quickly handing the award to the only title that could possibly win"
Yes, I expected this game to ultimately win. One would often expect a PS3 exclusive to win on a PS3 site. But to say that it basically left the competition in the dust. Well I've got to say that's just going too far. I've already gone in too great length before how outstanding the graphics in Batman AA are. Included was photographic evidence even and discussions how Uncharted 2's feverish use of quick and seamless cut scenes/FMV while fantastic looking doesn't necessarily add points to in-game graphics.
As for Writing, while I was just arguing for Batman a second ago, I'm going to have to argue against it now. Yes, Batman AA had an excellent story. I would have been a close tie for me with Uncharted 2. However, Dragon Age: Origins was the better of these two. There's the main thrilling story behind Dragon Age and then there's all the side stories and individual character developments. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a game than the whole "Have you ever licked a lamppost in winter," conversation with Alistair. Then there are the dozens of amusing random mini convos between your companions. Heck, the Stone Prisoner add-on is a must by just for how amusing Shale's character is! Then there is the depth that is contributed by how different sides of the story are shown depending on your race and class. Now, I guess I can understand as professional game critics how you might not have time to spend some 200 hours going through each race/class, getting to fully know (often carnally) each of your companions, and trying out every branch of the story.

Edit: I guess the motionflow (or whatever the combat system is called) fighting might have prompted the animation loving, so I get that.

And let's forget about solely the facial animations from FMVs cause I really don't think that should be the sole deciding point. There's the textures, the combat animations, the environments, physics, etc.

As for Dragon Age: Origins, the problem with that is it isn't really a story you experience in a linear way. I never really even got an idea of the side-stories in the game, and the main plot almost seemed superfluous because I didn't care enough. There's very little character development unless you talk to every character constantly and even then, it's only glimpses into their past.
No, one plays Origins for the gameplay, not the story. At least, that's how I see it.

The gameplay in DA:O is excellent but I just don't think it would have been half the game it is without the driving storyline. I never could stick with an RPG from beginning to end without a quality story. Main reason why I haven't played Demon's Souls all that much. Honestly it's nearly an insult to say a Bioware game doesn't have a top notch storyline. These guys always go all out with their plots, subplots, and characters.

But the fact that you say you love RPG's and you've never played a FF game is just wild. I would highly recommend picking one up....they really are freakin' awesome.

Uncharted 2 gets GOTY - was there ever any doubt?
LOL!
Keep up the good work into the next Decade PSXExtreme. I've been floating around the Net a long time and commented at many, many geek/tech/gaming sites and this is the one I have 'stuck' on. Interesting and well written articles, great regular readers/comment posters and just over all a superb experience.
Thanks Ben, Arnold, John and all at PSXExtreme.
It there was a Gaming Site Of The Year award I could give out, I would be handing it to you.
I have a feeling that next year's GOTY category will be a tough one. GT5, FFXIII, GOW III, Heavy Rain and that's only four of the major games that will grace the PS3. We thought 2009 was a good year (and it was), 2010 could be better - yes, I know, mind boggling isn't it?

Wow, I haven't heard a more selfish sentiment in my life. You mean the very site you visit that brings great content, content which you enjoy is trying to bring in more revenues with ads, (that's how websites survive) and instead of supporting and clicking on said ads, you leave the community?
My goodness, people like you are the worst..... How do you expect PSXextreme to survive? Ads keep websites afloat; On the contrary instead of leaving, you should click on the ads to make sure your favorite website succeeds in this tight business!
Wake up man, you sound like a real spoiled child. Plain nonsensical statement.
To everyone else, support your website! You know how!
BTW, great list, but I do believe MW2 should have won best multiplayer, there's no way IMO Killzone 2 took said crown.

Your claim:
Better story
My Answer:
Yet you don't say HOW it is better
Your claim:
Better soundtrack
My Answer:
How is it a better soundtrack if you don't explain this either........?
Your claim:
Better English voice acting
My Answer:
You're probably right, I HATED the English dubbing of SFIV. But LOVED the Japanese voice acting which was nearly perfect in every aspect. Still, don't see how this is anything that would make SFIV worse in the voice acting department since the English voices in most Japanese games suck anyway and most set it to Japanese by default anyway.
Your statement:
Blazblu's fighting system is better because you can run
My answer:
Do you know which fighting game is consider to be the best in terms of being as realistic to life as possible? Virtua Fighter
You will never see a character in that game run (there's one if I'm right, but her fighting style demands it). Let's take this further though, there's a actually a character who can run in SFIV, and that's Dan. And who is Dan? A joke character...if that doesn't tell you what people think of running in a fighting game, I don't know what does...Running in a fight is the most ridiculous thing you could ever see. If the fighting style doesn't call for it (karate for example) then why the hell should a karate character be running around the screen for?
Your claim:
Better roster in Blazblu because there's more variety
My answer:
You can't compare monsters to real life characters....
That's like comparing Metal Gear Solid to Dragon Age: Origins in terms of character designs. Which you could, but you'd definitely have to explain more intricately why the variety is deeper in Blazblu
That said, you've got a lot of fighting styles in SFIV: wrestling, karate, judo, military combat, kick boxing, yoga, sonic (blanka), sumo, kung-fu (many variations of it), shadaloo variations, etc.). Or if you were talking 'bout design variations. Well there's everything from a sumo wrestler to a green beast, to a chef...
So in the variety department making Blazblu better? That's a matter of opinion since it actually doesn't have more variety than SFIV.

-HOW is the story better?
It just is? When you compare the two you can see that BB's has more depth, plot twists, mysterious agendas etc etc. SF4's feels.. kinda shallow. What, M. Bison tries to take over the world with Shadaloo, AGAIN, and makes a cyborg super-fighter that betrays him.
-HOW a soundtrack is better?
What kind of question is this? How? Just listen to them and compare, I gave you directions on how to find them.
-Better fighting system
What does a fighting system have to do with how realistic a game is? I didn't say BB's fighting system is better BECAUSE you can run. BB's system is faster overall, and smoother, this allows for better comboing (if one knows how to play), and I forgot to add, it's more complex with rapid cancels, barrier guard, instant block, rapid cancels, counter assaults. And not all characters in BB run either, depends on each character, and their fighting style. Again, check out match videos to see what I mean. I can't really explain it without visual evidence. A picture is worth a thousand words, so how much is a video worth? Then again, I suppose one could prefer a slower clunkier system than a faster smoother one, so...
-More variety in the roster?
I said unique. UNIQUE. Unique =/= more variety. Each character in BB has something called a Drive move, that have unique properties that affects the entire style of that character. Examples would be like:
-Ragna the Bloodedge has the Souleater drive, where his drive attacks steal life from the opponent.
- Jin has frostbite, his drive moves encase the opponent in ice on hit, stunning them and allowing Jin to continue his combos.
- Rachel controls the wind. Her movement, the opponents movement and her moves can be affected by it.
- Tager's drive moves magnetize his opponents. Tager's the "grab" character, kinda like Zangief, though he is very big and slow. He can draw in his opponents into his grabs with use of his magnetism, or just draw them in generally, so he doesn't need to move around himself.
-Carl Clover has a marrionette. You can control this marrionette yourself to move and attack, help you with combos (cause Carl himself is very weak), so it's like controlling 2 characters at once.
- And don't get me started on Arakune.
So they're actually very different from each other. Not like Ryu, Ken and Akuma (or was it Gouken?), who are variations of each other.

I like organized discussions. It's just better that way.
Your proof:
You explain what you don't like 'bout SFIV story wise. Yet you don't tell me what kinds of plots Blazblue has, or at least an example of it. All you say is that it's better and has twists and such. This is still not proven since you're not proving how it is better with examples.
My answer:
In contrast I'll bring up the fact you're stating wrong story info 'bout SFIV. M. Bison is not out to conquer the world in SFIV. Rather he's planning to find the right body for him to transfer his soul to. You've also got Akuma's thirst for Ryu's true evil nature, and the involvement of Gen and Gouken in intervening to prevent Akuma from his evil ways.
Your proof:
You direct me to listen to Blazblue music. How is that gonna prove anything? Aren't you supposed to tell me HOW it is better and THEN direct me to it?
My answer:
I'll prove you wrong right here and now: I just listened to some of Blazblue's OSTs just now. Interestingly, there's no clear theme behind them other than them being metal variations. Nothing wrong with that. But when compared to Ryu's SFIV remix (full of history, full of character attachment, and a real sense of place (Japan) ) you can get MORE OUT OF the SF soundtrack than you can out of Blazblue's. If and only if you're a metal fan can you actually dig said soundtrack. While in SFIV you get a variety of themes VERY VERY VERY specific to the character and very descriptive overall. M. Bison's SFIV theme for example starts out with with a very psychotic symphonic theme followed by "royal" chorus. That's the kind of character description SFIV OSTs give you.
Your proof:
Blazblue is better because it's faster, smoother, and allows for combos. It also has barrier guard, instant block, rapid cancels, counter assaults.
My answer:
On the "run = better" claim. Well that's the only proof you gave me. It's neither faster nor smoother. It appears to be so because there's a lot of little attacks being linked.
SFIV has counters and cancels as well. Barrier guard? It's not needed in a martial arts fighter.
I've noticed that Blazblue is based around breaking the defense and comboing. It's the same who can break through the defense and combo....There's no flexibility. It's always who can break through the defense first. There's also no zone control. Most of the time in Blazblue you see that a character can only/mostly fight one way (there's no zoning). Combos is what makes Blazblue...Blazblue, that's intensively limiting.
SFIV allows for situational fighting which is possible by zone control. Get someone like Chun-Li and you'll see how she'll dominate the air game but can also adjust and dominate the distance game, she can Focus attack and absorb hits, and then there's the added revenge system which allows you to unleash a Ultra combo on your enemy if you connect(possible in different situations). What's most important is that SFIV makes it possible to adjust and re-adjust (chess) in every second of the game. In Blazblue you're just looking for that combo (checkers). Basically look for an opening and combo....You can probably re-adjust with the various cancels but I doubt that it's done to "zone out" AKA escape or to prevent your opponent from comboing, rather it's for countering (and giving you a chance to combo him back). A fighter that's based mostly/solely on combos is not that great a fighter. Yes you can combo in SFIV, but its real "game" is behind adjustment control (who can adjust to every single character quicker and most effectively in the game depending on the match up). A lot of the vids I see of Blazblue, people repeat the same strategy no matter who they're facing...
Your proof:
Everyone in Blazblue is unique
My answer:
So is everyone in SFIV...
By the way there's this character called Rose who steals power from her opponents. There's two karate men, a green beast, a kick boxer, a yoga user, a judo character, a special weapons user, a psycho power user, etc. etc.
I'd say where Blazblue wins is the presentation department (story mode, where the anime scenes are of better quality). Other than that it's not up to par in the gameplay/character department.

I really wanted infamous to win best new ip, and MW2 to get a lil' more cred (despite its short campaign). And the game im most looking forwad to, GOW 3. After playing the demo, ive never played or seen anything like it! It absolutely put me in awe and im always trying to show everyone the demo just so they can see what im seeing. It's unbelievable! But its respectufully your stage and you guys (Ben, Arnold) brought it! Great nominees and good choices on the winners!
Well heres to another great year in gaming! And the new year is upon us! *raises glass*

Good year in review, i still need to get around to Uncharted 2, Assassins Creed 2 and Dragon Age
For me i guess Tekken 6 is my current GotY, It was a bit underrated in my opinion, i thoroughly enjoyed it.
I'm certainly looking forward to the 1st 1/4 of this year. Heavy Rain and Final Fantasy XIII have been my biggest anticipated titles for longer than i can remember. both being release within a month's distance is insane, can't wait. Thanks Ben and Arnold for good source for the year, next year shall be a riot!

Now KZ2 you have the weight of your character and your weapon factored into the gameplay. Although there's times the gun fights can get hectic and you may spawn right bang in the middle of a fight and die, but it's fun and even looks better.
Actually I believe in many ways MW2 doesn't even look as good as it's MW1(CoD4) predecessor. MW2 is a decent game but it's far from being one of the best. Thats just my opinion anyway, what was the last count of sales? 8+million or something? I guess the majority rules and I'm wrong, although I'm one of the people who bought the game also.

For instance KZ2 is fun, not so strategic, but fun. The way all the game modes were put in a match was great, it showed who really is the best player all around and it made it new and fresh! The way you could customize your character with the different soldier classes, (after unlocking the said ribbons) to how you play was simply new! You literally could create your own super soldier! The reason i say its not strategic is because its a run and gun type game. For instance search and Destroy KZ2 style you respawn which makes for a huge frag fest, but all the same that equals tons of kills, which is always a plus.
MW2 is strategic, yes and sometimes camping is strategic. Am I not supposed to defend the bomb site in search and destroy (been alot of complaints about campers)? The killstreak rewards and how in depth the game is makes it great. All the weapon customization and the perks add to the online gameplay! not to mention you can bet atleast 1 person on my friends list is playing.
As far as Uncharted 2 goes, its definitely the most original. Although its a 3rd person shooter which seperates it, that really allows for more player movements, and interaction. For instance climbing up buildings to gain advantage, or getting into a melee combat situation, or taking actual cover and firing blind. Uncharted 2 MP is absolutely brilliant for the simple reason it plays just like the single player! And when i say that, I mean all the familiar faces are there, all the humor is there, all the action is there, and the way you interact with the environment is there! Thats what i like most from UC2 MP is it doesnt feel foreign to the single player which is where the heart of the game is at!
All 3 could of won this easy. and i dont have any argument which one should have won! I know alot of people might think im a MW2 fan boy but im not. I just defend a good game when it deserves it! As I always say I'm just a gamer and no matter what genre no matter what game it is, if its good... It's good and deserves it recognition!

I know UC2 is a great game and all, but I honestly wasn't that blown away by it. It was an improvement from the first. I like that it won a bunch of awards and is an exclusive but, best game ever? nah, I'd put MGS4 above it easily. Even Bioshock and Demon's Souls. But hey, not many people would agree with that.
I loved KZ2 single player campaign, but really didn't get into the mp too much so I really can't agree with the choice for that category. MW2 mp blows it away in my opinion. No other mp game gets you hooked like that one. It's pure brilliance. Not to mention the action is faster.

However one thing .........
Modern Warfare sold MORE ON THE PS3 than all of these other games combined ON THE PS3. Why? Because more people wanted to play MW2 than any of the others. You HAVE to respect MW2, not only as a game, but as the legend that it really is in gaming history.
This is a great site and I come here FIRST for ps3 news. The only problem Ive ever had is , by god, I have a different opinion than most and sometimes .... it is not easy being the black sheep when everyone ....... GETS 25 KILL SHOTS ON ME THEN USES THE NUKE AND FINISHES ME OFF! OMG I MADE A MW2 REFERENCE!
LOL! Happy New year.

I think the games is fun, addictive and all that shiny glimmer it has when it comes to multiplayer, but do i think it is as good as some of the other games listed here today, no.
Look we all have to learn to respect opinion that's all, i understand sometimes you may run into one of the few who just like to poke and bash and all that obnoxious stuff, but don't let it get to you, just let it go, that's all you can do or you'll get an ulcer hahah
haha i like that comment about MW2, made me laugh hahah

Secondly, who played in your brain and told you that MW2 sold more than all those games combined? What games are you talking about? And why didn't you provide numbers? Didn't you mention a comparison between MW2 sales and Uncharted 2 sales a week ago and I proved your wrong? Do you want me to repeat what I said again? The irony is that now you're making a more ridiculous comparison...MW2 sales vs All PS3 games combined sales...that alone deserves a big lol. Again just for you, hopefully you'll get it and you'll stop mentioning the sales cr@p! MW2 has sold around 5.5 million copies on PS3 up until now, while Uncharted 2 has sold around 2.5 million copies and Killzone 2 has sold around 2.3, which means that two PS3 games have managed to sell nearly the same as MW2. Uncharted 2 has long legs - I told you this before - it will continue to sell and it will reach 4 million copies, that's undoubtedly a success. Take into consideration that Killzone 2 is the second in its franchise, exactly like Uncharted 2. Whereas MW2 is the sixth in the COD series. So grow up and stop mentioning sales. And happy new year.

If you complain about Demon's Souls is either because you can't handle the difficulty or you're looking for a story driven game and even when you are you get sucked into the environments and this neverending determination to prove yourself in every single battle and when you can't or need help you summon other players to assist you.

Shame that Sacred 2: Fallen Angel didn't make the nominees? I'm bitterly disappointed it may have been buggy and rated a bit low. But it had everything what a enjoyable game has to offer its fun, worth playing, time consuming, combat arts system is brilliant and the world of Ancaria just looks so beautiful.
Some may disagree but simply it was awesome
Damn hope thier's more RPGs by Xmas 2010, I can only see one that I need to keep a watch on which is A Gothic tale.

I must admit though, dispite my remark about Arnold straying people away from the PS3 version, it was still good regardless of any minor issues DA:O, had, and they were minor in my eyes. i also must admit even if sacred 2 was nominated Ben and Arnold are both right in picking Dragon Age. It' just a far superior RPG in my opinion!

Going back to the awards topic, you could have added Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2 to the nominees for RPG of the year -_-

Alienage made a valid point! You cant judge something without playing it! that philosophy actually goes for daily life. I dont understand y u made that comment...

My question was pretty simple and to the point. If you don't get the point I'm sorry, it's there; keep looking.

As far as opinion goes you have to legitimately play something to form a valid opinion. Its one thing to take in word of mouth, read reviews, and say "ok, there is to many negatives to buy this game." Its a completely different opinion when you say "ok, i bought the game and should have listened to everyone because after actually playing this game it is horrible." People can sure give you insight and reviews can help sway a decidion but with out actually getting your hands on how can you honestly atleast say this game is better for me or not?
I know we're talkign about games but honestly, if i listened to people about my job i wouldnt be in the middle of a great opportunity. Same goes with games, i have a few in my collection that if i listened to what people and reviews said, i wouldnt have purchased and enjoyed them, nor would i be able to say "yea i have played that game and despite what some peple said, i actually enjoy it".

yes you make a good point too. But you have actually probably heard atleast one Jonas Brothers song before and can make that valid assumption. Which would be the same as playing a game and saying "eh its not for me!"
Its a lot different if you havnt heard a Jonas Brothers song and said that because you might like em'. ;) yea right!

Dragon Age is a fun time and offers an intersting story but Demon's Souls IMO reminded me why I love RPGs so much, especially RPGs from long ago when there wasn't an Easy/Normal/Hard diffculty.

Ill admit though both games were great and although i barely got into Demons Souls because i dont own it, (i played my fiends), what i seen and experienced was good. And i havnt yet finished Dragon Age (but absolutely love it) either so im not one to say which is better because i havnt finished either! But i will say Dragon Age had a more friendly approach as far as stepping into and playing, and also the main story and character progression worked alot better. Relying on souls for EVERYTHING may make it difficult which a challenge can be good, and some how epic but it also was a pain! Again though we're talking opinions here!
Im not disagreeing with what your saying about demons souls being a better game, cus i know its good, and i know there ae alot of valid points to back it up. But some people like myself like the type of play Dragon age offers, and its still a truly good game!

I did have to read it all, I don't like to comment on the words of others without fully giving them my attention; I think that's only fair.
Your admitting to hardly playing one of the games and not finishing the other does call into question the validity of your opinion in regards to my original post. It's one thing to judge and form an opinion of a game, it's another to attempt at engaging in an in-depth conversation having admitted at the beginning you're unable to do so based on your progression in both games.

poor infamous, still not getting any love.
DW sucker punch, at least i appreciate the late nights you put in to make infamous the best game of the year.
considering how much they accomplished in 2 years is mind boggling, i mean programming all the metal in the game, water and such to conduct electricity would of taken ages!
i guess what they say is true.
perfection can be so perfect it gets overlooked.

By the way, in case anyone wants a frame of reference, my top five favorite games of the year (quality and other comparisons taken into account during the Awards notwithstanding) are:
1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
2. Assassin's Creed II
3. Killzone 2
4. inFamous
5. Dragon Age: Origins
This is to appease those of you who have been lobbying for inFamous. I loved it, too, remember. It's just that Batman does a few things better, even though I didn't LIKE it more.
I also really loved Flower, Shatter, and Katamari Forever. The only really big disappointment is very recent, and that was Left 4 Dead 2. Other than that, so many games delivered in so many ways for me in 2009...expect even more in 2010. :)

BTW I'm going to assume you played L4D2 on 360 instead of PC.
Oh and speaking of Valve products even someone as biased as me can't help but start to get annoyed seeing it's 2010 now and Episode3 still hasn't been released. Gawd!

Thank you too for the mention at the end of the nominees listings; again this was much appreciated it and left me with a warm and fuzzy feeling :)
For the record, your final choices made from the nominee list are pretty much bang on. Little sad not to have seen Demon Souls do better; but I can understand though why it had its near misses. The competition was tough.
Admittedly I have not had a chance to play Uncharted 2 yet! Why? Simply put I cannot get a copy of it here in Singapore. It has been "sold out" since its release here; very difficult to find a copy. There are also no second/used copies to be found. This is a game that wont leave someones video game collection any time soon I would think.
Also appreciate the respect shown to Killzone 2. It is was a ground breaking title and deserves all the praise it got and some. I actually played Killzone 2 for 6 hours on New Year's Eve and had some of the best multi-player action since I purchased it... I think Killzone 2 and (the soon to be purchased) Uncharted will rank as my favourite games of this generation thus far.
Looking forward to a ground breaking 2010 and watching the numbers closely; we should see the PS3 leap frog the xBot sometime this year; probably toward the second half as has been my prediction all along...
Time will tell...
...a successful 2010 too you all...

Anyhow, round about March my wife wakes up and says "let's go get that Rock Band game and console today". She was thinking Wii but I knew the Wii just didn't have the sort of games we really like so I convinced her to forget about the exercise gimmicks of the Wii and go for the overall excellence and hardcore system that is the PS3. And we're both glad we did.
Right off the bat we were going to get Far Cry 2 but then the clerk at EB Games said, "try Uncharted - Drake's Fortune, it is way better". Well, I'd never heard of Uncharted, but whoa! was I ever impressed. Next someone recommended Assassin's Creed and its been a joy ride on our PS3 ever since.
2009 - my first year with a console. And lo and behold, what happens at the end of the year? Uncharted 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 get released. Wowzers! what luck! what timing! What friggin' great games on a friggin' great console. Now I'm PS3 all the way, baby!
Thanks for your reviews. I think I'll be checking out Arkham Asylum and inFamous as a result. Oh yeah, and Killzone 2. And I can't wait for Heavy Rain - yow! that's gonna be a doozie!
Btw, thanks for a great site. I trust this place and the "realness" of the reviewers here. Good job. Good community too. I like the respectful, mature vibe you guys express.
Here's to a great 2010 for you all, and for PS3 gaming also.
p.s. I second the suggestion of Adblock Plus http://adblockplus.org/en/ I use it with Firefox and it works so well in the back ground I didn't even know there were ads here. I kid you not.

In that way, I can entirely understand how some of you were disappointed that DS didn't get more love. But just chalk it up to the fact that the game didn't "get" us. Origins did. In all honesty, despite my strong belief that the balance in DS really was out of whack, that was a big reason Origins won.
Trust me, fellow RPG fans, I know how you feel. Don't you think I wanted FFT to win all the awards back '97? And yet, I knew it wouldn't. ;)

One thing caught me when I read the lists.... I think that Critter Crunch should have at least been nominated in some of the downloadable categories. It's a great puzzler and the ccop/competetive modes are probably the best I've ever seen from a puzzler. Dropping an anvil on your opponent so his Biggs (or Smalls) goes dizzy, or making him eat crazy shrooms so his screen goes psychadelic is really cool!
Good list though. The sign of a good list is that you agree with most of the titles being in it, even if you'd like to move them around a bit.
