Ben's Week In Review: January 3

It's tough for me to believe that it's already 2010 but all we can do is soldier forth. It's like when Apollo Creed says to Rocky at the end of "Rocky III;" "it's a shame we gotta get old," and Rocky replies, "just keep punchin', Apollo."

Do we already know what next year's GotY nominees will be?

Now that last year's Game of the Year Awards are in the books, we're already looking down the road to see what titles might be vying for ultimate supremacy at the end of 2010. Does anyone else think it's going to come down to God of War III, Gran Turismo 5 and Final Fantasy XIII? I mean, I have difficulty thinking of any other games I want more this year, although I suppose I have to include Heavy Rain, The Last Guardian and Alan Wake on my "most anticipated" list. However, i have little faith that any of the previous three will be in the running, and I do have my reasons for that. GT5, FFXIII, GoWIII...what's stopping these games from being totally awesome? Well, I suppose there are skeptics out there for just about every hyped title but even so, the way things are shaping up now, it's almost as if we have three nominees for GotY 2010 already. Okay, we're not about to jump the gun like this (and we never would) but it's fun to think about, isn't it? ;)

So what if GT5 won't come out until November?

I'm well aware that GameStop never has the final say when it comes to release dates, although I was - initially - disappointed to hear they had moved their date for Gran Turismo 5 from May to November 2, 2010. It could be a placeholder date but for the sake of argument, let's say it's true: well, so what? Look, there are some games that really drain a big chunk of my time, and Gran Turismo 5 will most definitely be one of them. The only other title in 2010 that's almost guaranteed to suck up an equal amount of time is FFXIII; the likes of God of War III, Heavy Rain and others I will certainly play, but they won't take anywhere near as long. Therefore, I'd want FFXIII and GT5 to be as far apart this year as possible; with the RPG coming on March 9, I honestly don't know what I'd do if GT5 came out that same month, or even in April. I need time to fully take care of both games and I'd hate to have to choose between the two.

Sometimes, it's all about timing. We have more than enough promising titles landing in the first quarter alone so if GT5 wants to come out for the holidays, fine. Frees me up a bit, you know?

Personal gaming update

So after trading in Left 4 Dead 2, which I absolutely despised (yes, yes, I know it's mostly for multiplayer but that's no reason to give the LAME-ASS single-player a free pass), I started in on Halo 3: ODST. See, I own all the Halos and I've found them all enjoyable, although I'm not quite siding with the fans who deem them to be the best FPSs around. The only reason I didn't get ODST when it came out is because I knew it was basically just an expansion, and I wasn't about to drop $60 for it. But if someone wanted to give it to me for Christmas... They did, so now I'm playing it. It's fun, and I really like Nathan Fillion as Buck. Fillion just rules in anything he does, and that's a nice touch for this game. I've never been the biggest fan of the weaponry or level design in these titles, and ODST doesn't really change this belief, but it's still entertaining. When I'm done, it's on to Resident Evil 5.

I'm still debating on whether or not to pick up Bayonetta this week. I really love the idea and style but...well, I'm just not sure if I can handle the chore of beating that game. We'll see. February will be huge, though, what with Dante's Inferno, Bioshock 2, White Knight Chronicles and Heavy Rain. Good Lord. LOL Outside of gaming, I have nothing to add. It's like 15 degrees out with a crazy wind...it's nights like these that make me want a big house with a roaring fire and stuff. Sadly, I ain't rich yet, nor have I met a rich girl. ;)

2009 was the only year that I had to drop many games that I wanted to play because I didn't have the money or time. Sadly, it looks like 2010 is going to be another one :(

I hope MAG lives up to its potential along with WKC and Heavy Rain. Next year is going to be great for all gamers, with great 360 exclusives like Mass Effect 2(exclusive for the moment) and splinter cell; PS3 instant hits such as GOWIII and hopefully Resistance 3; and wii games like Other M and The new Mario. It feels good to be a gamer, and better being a PS3 owner.

I don't think any of the Q1 games will be nominated for GOTY mainly because they get forgotten by the time the GOTY awards do come around. I mean why wasn't Killzone 2 nominated for GOTY or any other award. I mean that game was amazing and everyone was saying it would be GOTY when it came out. And then when the VGA's came out where was it?

Same with inFAMOUS in some ways.(But inFamous should not have been for GOTY but been nominated at least in another category.)

I really hope that doesn't happen this year again. With Heavy Rain, and MAG coming out those games should be nominated in one area at least for being extremely innovative. MAG for the 256 players and Heavy Rain for the first game to have multiple endings and multiple choices.

I hear ya Benster, it's been a decent year but I think 2010 will be even better for us RPG fans. I mean c'mon FFXIII, WKC, Resonance, SO4. And hopefully we will get info on Nier and some others (What was the deal with that "What goes around comes around teaser"?)

I just have to find a way around the fact that I have to get 3 games in feb (Dante, HR, and WKC) and 2 in March (GoWIII and FFXIII) Dunno how I'll afford it. But yeah GT5 can wait I guess, I might just pass on it altogether now.

Actually based on how long it takes me to finish FFXIII I might just wait until I can get it at that price, or 40. It's not like I care about the trophies or anything I need straight away and Inferno should hold me for a bit on action. We will see.

I'm putting at least 100hrs into FF13...then replaying it again. I only suggest you rent GOW3 first because I doub't you get a ton of hrs out of it and $60 for under 20hrs of gameplay IMO is outrageous. I often wait for games of that genre to be out several months than I pick them up.

i know both of you are rpg fans, more so than maybe the action title but a video game with 12 hours of play is still worthy purchase. Think of it this way movies blu ray in particular since the PS3 games are on BR discs (obviously), are average 2 hours long and run a hefty $19.99 and up price tag on new releases. Thats 10 bucks an hour. Video games running 12 hours long at $60, is $5 an hour (i know not all vids are that long but...), thats a decent amount of entertainment for the price, all things considered.

The only reason i point that out is video games are cheap entertainment in the world of entertainment! I know these are tough times for alot of people, im one of them! And when you have to choose one game over another or settle with renting one its not fun, i know that feeling! I agree the price of games is a lil' outrageous but its still cheap entertainment considering you dont just throw the game away! Shoot you take care of them they will last forever, and if you play each game twice (considering its good) like i do, its well worth it! Unless in your guys' scenario where you have to pick an rpg over an action title or what have you! I feel you! But i dont suggest renting GOW 3 that is a must buy title day one if you have the funds!

If there are 2 games coming out close to each other and one offers me over 100hrs of gameplay and the other less than 20hrs than It doesn't make sense to spend $120 on both games. While I'm enjoying the 100hr+ game for $60 the 20hr- game can be reducing in price until it comes time to enjoy that game weeks/months later.

BTW I think buying dvd/blu-ray movies on day1 is crazy as well. I won't lie, I download a ton of movies and buy the ones I like months later for a cheaper price.

Since I've clearly been pointing out my intentions on buying both games it's understood that both offer an entertaining play through. Thus 100hrs gets my $60 and the 20hrs get's a rental at most upfront and my $30 down the road.

with respect to limited vertigo and worldendswithme, i understand you choosing FF13 (sorry no roman numerals) over GOW3. But GOW 3 is absolutely amazing! I have played the demo and it honestly is the most awe inspiring game ive played! Uncharted 2 raised the bar and is one of the best games ive played, and FF13 no doubt will be great. But just the time i spent in the GOW3 demo I seen to many things never done in video games to ignore! Not to mention its the most action packed game ive played! There was never a dull moment in the whole 20 min. or so i played. i was either fighting or interacting, absolutely brilliant the way they used the time playing the game actually doing something, rather than just running around! And the scale of this game is huge, its just an awesome thing to witness.

So as i said i know you two are huge rpg fans and yeah it makes sense to go with the game that may offer more hours of gameplay. But as Kr3snik even said, what would you prefer a game with 100+ hours that WILL be fun, or a game that may offer 10-15 hours but be absolutely off the wall fun! I guess the best thing to do is just make sure you got $120 handy, i know im gonna try!

and about the movies, i found its actually cheaper to buy them day one sometimes, but yea still a pointless purchase day one. Movies are tough because it has to be really good for me to get the urge to watch it again. Like last night i rented district 9, and even though it was a good movie, ill probably never watch it again!

in all honesty GOW 3 is as much of a full meal as FF13 will be. It just depends on how you look at it and what you prefer!

As i said the demo sold me on a day one purcahse (as if i needed it) so its a no brainer for me! As for you LV, and Worldendswithme, obviously you crave the rpg genre more so.

You have a habit of entering an ongoing conversation and missing the point.

During this entire conversation from beginning to end it's been about the scenario in which someone intends to purchase BOTH games. This being the case I then explained that buying a game with 100+hrs of gameplay first THEN buying the game with 20hr gameplay is the cheapest thing to do since after completion of the first game the 2nd game will be at a reduced price.

I understand there are people that want to play GOW3 over FF13, that scenario has NOTHING to do with this conversation.

I understand what this conversation was about. All i was doing was justifying a day one purchase for both is a must. If someone doesnt have the money to do that, i dont think they would be upset with purchasing either regardless the length. I think you missed my point.

The reason i was justifying that is because you kept throwing out analogies and such trying to prove ff13 is a better buy. Well maybe for you...

watching some of the videos of FFX III put me to sleep, watching some of the GOW 3 vids puts a massive smile on my face and makes me fall of the bed.

I'm hoping the PS3 starts to take some of the wii crowd. I have several friends that have great TVs and amazing setups but they only have a wii and they often bring up their desires to get something worthy of their setup.

Vertigo - That's funny, because I created my setup because I got a PS3. When I bought my PS3 at launch I was playing it on a 30' standard def TV, and my only thought was "this ain't right..." - what a difference a TV makes.

March FFXIII, and April GOWIII....insane

Anyway, I have a feeling GOWIII or GT5 will take Game of the Year.

By the way, we might get Resistance 3 this year, don't forget!

I still think GT5 should come out in time for the Summer.....just like GT1 did (beautiful summer)

It gives us time to actually PLAY the game. Fall is a busy time. Summer is better overall for a racing game.

I hope it comes out in between May-July

I personally love GT best during the Spring. I still have my first car (Camaro Z28) and something about the first of Spring makes me get it out and play some GT on the open road away from the cops.

I'm picking GT5 to win GOTY at least on PSXE. My GOTY will be FF13, I just know it.

Joe Madureira is a great artist and I loved his X-Men stuff and the designs for this game. What few I've seen anyways. And the sequel is already being talked about due to the positive reaction to this one.

still I hate the design of Bayonetta but the game isn't bad (I give it a 8.0) and I think Darksiders can get a 8.5

Hey Ben I have the same opinion as you for L4D2. What a boring piece of...

As for Bayonetta, the game is very good. I have already finished the 360 version. Its a pretty good game but in no way it deserves a 9.5. Its more of an 8+ game. If you are a Sega fan and an old gamer (32) like me you will enjoy the references to past Sega clasics like Outrun, Afterburner, Fantasy Zone and Space Harrier. You should play it Ben and guys its not that hard and it would take around 6 or 7 hours to complete it. The last chapters are kinda borring and the game is extremely cheesy. The bosses are really lame too and I was kinda lost with the story. I dont know but the 360 version looked way better than the PS3 demo, I know its just a demo and that get the bennefit of the doubt. At least guys you should rent it or buy if you have already bougth the PS3 exclusives and are Devil May Cry fans.

L4D2 is boring as hell I'm sure...IF YOU HAVE NO ONE TO PLAY IT WITH. It has given me the most fun online since the last one's release in 08. Also if you're another one of the unfortunate that bought/played the 360 version than I suggest you stop buying crappy ports and get the game for the platform it was designed for.

I wouldn't pay $60 either. I bought it 2 weeks before it was released for $35 off Steam. Just aother reason why PC gaming and Steam make for great gaming.

Ben saying the single player is lacking is outrageous. Anyone that buys L4D2 expecting to sit back and play it by themselves clearly didn't get the memo or play the 1st one.

I preordered my PC copy from GoGamer.com for $34 dollars. And it's definitely worth more than that in terms of the fun it's provided since release.

The additions to L4D2 make it well worth a purchase, that is if you have a PC. I'm a big Valve fan but their console versions of games are weak IMO. Also on the 360 you're getting fewer everything and paying for anything extra while on the PC side I've already got over 2 dozen new campaigns and all for FREE.

so L4D 2 is lame, and ODST is fun?
ok i better get that straight jacket ready, what size are you?

as i have said many, many times ODST seriously bored the crap out of me.
i would rather strip a piece of cable, grab one strip of copper, heat it to red hot and shove it between my nails than play that crap again.
normally when im playing games time flys buy, 4 hours feel like 1 hour.
but with ODST i remember the one night i played it, i turned it on at 9 and every 20 minutes i was checking the clock thinking it was 12 and time to go to bed.
never has a game bored me so much, in fact watching fu**ing Oprah! is more enjoyable than playing ODST.

as for GT5,IF that date is true, thats it PD you just lost 2 sales.
i dont mind a game taking its sweet time to make sure its ready, but when it gets delayed a million times, than JP gets it in march and i get the finger till later in November thats when i get the shits.
i dont get this, europe has always been the best selling region for GT, so to say thanks to their fans they give you the finger and make you wait 8 months longer.
great way to say thank you for buying our game!

im sick of this, from now on if a game releases 1 month or later here than any other country im simply not buying it.
they want to treat me like the gum under their shoe, they want to give me the finger why should i give them my hard earned cash?

Well we can't really critisise, if somebody has the money, then can buy stuff.

Best not to tackle 2 games at once when both require tons of time and attention imo, like right now it's easy for my to break up Uncharted 2 with some battles in Valkyria, but FFXIII and GT5 each require all of your gaming time so yeah I wouldn't wanna try that out. And I don't think there's much danger of being bored in either.

2010 is the year I will prioritize PS3 exclusives above the rest of the 3rd party Multi-plats. Not that I hate them, I REALLY NEED TO PLAY GOW III, YAKUZA, WKC, HEAVY RAIN, GT5, THE LAST GUARDIAN and MANY MORE!

I'll never understand these comments about how it's okay to push the release dates of games way, way back because people will be busy playing other games. As an example, there are 30.1 million PS3's out there, and a game like Uncharted 2 sold 2.3 million copies. That means that no less than 92% of PS3 owner's AREN'T busy playing it. So when you're talking about how people will be busy playing one game, you're talking about a very small minority.

If you're okay with pushing GT5 back to November, well, heck, FIFA soccer 11 will probably be coming out around that time, and FIFA 10 sold more copies than Uncharted 2, so it would make even more sense to then shove GT5 into 2011 to make room for it.

Play RE5 already. Honestly am only thinking about Heavy Rain and FFXIII now. I'm not going to check for GT5 anymore till it gets a solid release date and with GOWIII, its like its got so many substitutes now, Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno, they all look similar, so am not really itching for it now plus I played that demo, its ace but feels like the same old.

Heavy Rain is sure to offer something new, some editors at Eurogamer named Heavy Rain as their 2009 GOTY after seeing the game at some expo or something, and its not even out, so its looking promising.

GOW 3 demo doesnt feel at all like the same old'. yeah t does have the same mechanics but theres 2x as much interaction with surroundings, enemies, and what not. Not to mention it played and looked like a dream! Dantes inferno and Bayonetta dont even come close as ive played all 3 demos. They shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentence!

But i understand your reasoning and leave u with your choice! but Heavy Rain and FF13 do look good as well. Dont get me wrong ill be playing all 3!

What about other games that could be nominees for game of the year like Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, Halo Reach? Plus there are tons of other games coming out that could unexpectedly good like Batman was for 2009. Games like Mafia II, Red Dead Redemption, or maybe True Crime 3?

I understand what you're saying World, about them not smelling like a nominee and all, but Batman didn't exactly feel like a nominee until everyone experienced. Plus some games that are expected to be good can turn out to be a big letdown. (Halo ODST, Resident Evil 5 of 2009)

I still haven`t played RE5. I`m kinda waiting to play with someone I know over co-op. Anyone knows if RE5 is any long? It took me about 15-20 hours playing RE4, which I really loved.

When I`m getting home, I`ll download MAG and test it out, not sure if I`m buying it or not.

I sold RE5 the next day.... i played it for most of the day i got it, but then played R.E:Code Veronica X just failed to get back into it after realising how much more i enjoy class Resi.

This spring is going to be phenominal, the reason i did but so many titles from 3/4 of 2009 is because i knew what was ahead of me:
Heavy Rain
Final Fantasy XIII
Dantes Inferno
God of War III
Bioshock 2
White Knight Chronicles

Needless to say im not going to be able to get them all on release either. HR and FFXIII i will for sure though.

Saint Elmo's Fire (Dante's Inferno) just seems too much like a God Of War ripoff...I mean, it's the extreme wannabe God Of War...with that said, I almost think that no one is taking this game seriously, it's too extreme, almost seems like they intend it to be a joke, I mean, it seems the kind of stuff that your average 13 year old would play.

Just remember when Dead Space was in development, everyone thought it was just a Rip off of Bioshock, which came out months before it, then when it was finaly released it turned out to be a fantastic game which easliy stood on ground with Bioshock (I personally enjoyed it more.)

So don't sweep it to the side just yet.

Fair point Ultimadream, however I never saw Dead Space as a Bioshock rip off as they were so different I can't even begin to explain and for those who did think it was a rip off after the demo people pretty much realised it was it s own game.

Dante's Inferno however I saw as a rip off of GOW and the demo further went ahead to prove my point(come on the buttons for some combos were even exactly the same), however I will give it a chance when the price goes down.

I'm looking forward to Inferno more than GOWIII so I'm taking it seriously. Who cares if the gameplay is the same? It works doesn't it? At least this way it is an all new story with plenty of unique things to experience like the devs interpretations of the 9 circles of hell. I love me some GOW and the demo is sick as hell but really nothing has changed since the first one.

I look at Inferno like Castlevania meets GOW.

Inferno (to me) is a game that you really want to love, but I couldn't get into it. The combat seemed too... easy? Everyone is more or less your plaything, and the only time I died during the demo was when those flames come out of the walls and a dodge roll sends you just far enough to get hit by the next flame.

My first game for the year is ganna be Mass Effect 2, I loved thefirst so the second one ganna be epic for sure. Febuary pretty dry for me except for aliens vs preditor, I've been praying for a good aliens game, and sega looks like they might deliver one come febuary. God of war and soul silver will have me pretty much hooked for April.

That's pretty much it for me(that I know) unless Sony fixes that god awful motion control concept where you use both the DS and the "wand" I won't be buying it come it's spring release.

BTW Ben/Arnold will you guys be reviewing all the game to be hitting the ps3 next year or just the big name ones( Dante inferno, bayonetta, ff13, etc) because I would really like to see what guys you think of avp. Avp not really on everyones radar right now.

The last thing on earth I'm going to buy is Mass Effect 2. I hadn't played the first until this past week and as good as the experience starts, it has taken a serious nose dive. I was really expecting something fantastic. A masterpiece even. Digging around in outer space looking for a place to drive a buggy around is not fun.

I'm thankful for the time I had to enjoy FFVII and FFVIII because they truely affected my life.

But borrowing the games was a good thing me and my neighbour had. Don't give me that sense-making mini-speech LimitedV :)
We both know not everybody will instantly start borrowing games from eachother, since only one person can pretty much play one RPG at a time.

I've never been into jrpgs so I'll pass Final Fantasy (I tried the PSP game and I didn't get what the hype was about at *all*. Erased it from my memory stick after less than an hours play).
I think Lost Planet 2 will be one of the greatest coop-games of 2010. As for solo games I've got great expectations on Rockstars upcoming cowboy shooter, Read Dead Redemption.

Crisis Core is a side project set within a FF universe. It isn't an example of what you can expect from a Final Fantasy game. Using your logic I'd try one of the RE railshooters for the wii and proclaim RE1-4 aren't for me.

Well did you guys try the Lost Planet 2 demo? I found it extremely promising as a *coop-game*. A friend and I had a blast defeating that huge boss at the end there. It's the first demo ever I've played more than once, usually demos are hardly worth the download.

As for Final Fantasy I'll be happy to give it another go, hopefully I'll understand what the hype's all about then, cause I love rpg games in general.

Also, calling me a "new gamer" is so misplaced it's not even worth a laugh. But even though the first LP sucked (I had the PC version, it was bundled with my screencard and yes, it sucked) doesn't mean they don't get it right with the sequel.

The two games I'm most looking forward to in 2010 are ModNation Racers and Red Dead Redemption. I got in the beta for MNR but gave to code away because I didn't turn my PS3 on for a week.

I'd really wish I could get excited for FFXIII but I don't see it keeping my interest for the 40 or 50 hours needed to beat a game like that. FFXII got pretty boring after 20 hours, I just don't think anything will change with XIII. As for Heavy Rain, I'm going to wait for a review. And I've never been interested in GT, so I'll pass on that.

Oh, I forgot one little game, Dead Space 2. If that comes out in 2010, then that game will be my most anticipated game this year, hands down.

yeah iv cut a lot of things down i got a young one on the way first on so im not buying games like i was 5 months ago but i got batman aa for Christmas then in feb its my birthday so ill get something else but ill enjoy what i got hey i know ill enjoy my little young one so got to have a lil time for it what ever it is lol dont know yet
