Feature: "I Want Another..."
Oh, these are fun. It's a simple editorial piece designed to elicit plenty of Comments - which have been absolutely outstanding lately; keep it up! - and one that just about everyone can relate to. You don't necessarily have to be a gaming veteran; I'm sure there are plenty of new IPs that came out only a year or two ago, and you enjoyed them so much, you've wanted a sequel ever since.
As for me, here are the top 5 titles I want to see return in true-blue sequel form:
5. Mutant League Football
Oh dear God, I spent an unhealthy amount of time with this game. Who else had an absurd amount of fun putting the All-Stars up against the Sixty-Whiners? You couldn't even make it to halftime without killing all the skeletons on the opposing team! And I kinda remember this one glitch that could cause the game to stop indefinitely: you may recall those booby traps on the field; one of them was like a little hole full of lava. One time, when the ball squirted free down the field, it landed behind one of these holes. Both teams tried to get it but they all fell into the hole and then the umpire fell in and the ball just sat there. Game stuck. LOL Oh man, Aliens, Monsters, Skeletons, the vertical field look...soooo much fun.
4. Legend of Legaia and/or Legend of Dragoon
Being a huge RPG fan of the PS1 era, these are two games that really need to make a return. They made Legaia 2 for the PS2 - which I loved - but they never did make another LoD, and I've wanted another title for both would-be franchises. I loved the Arts system in Legaia; it was a way of inputting fighting/brawling moves into a turn-based RPG and it ruled. Dragoon may have had the ugliest world map in the history of the world, but the rest of that game was great. I know a lot of fellow RPG aficionados have wanted a sequel to this one, but there's never any evidence of a new Dragoon project. Could we at least get Legaia 3? Miracle arts FTW, baby!
3. Battletoads
You know, in retrospect, it really wasn't that great of a game. But I always have a soft spot for this one; it's such a fuzzy memory of my early gaming days. I always had difficulty getting past that part with the jet-skis (or whatever those things were) because the jumps just started to get too complicated for me. But who didn't love smacking someone with the big boot or big hammer? I'm still not sure why everyone fell in love with this game, nor do I really understand why I so badly want another title, but...well, nostalgia is a funny thing. Make a new one, keep it in 2D, and put it up as a downloadable game. I'm willing to bet it'll sell very well and I'll be one of the first to buy it.
2. Chrono-something
I don't care if they want to make a follow-up to either Chrono Trigger or Chrono Cross, or if they just want to make another RPG with "Chrono" in the title. Just make one. It seems obvious now that rumors about a game called "Chrono Break" were unsubstantiated and Square-Enix has no current plans to bring any Chrono back into play. I still can't figure out why; we're talking about two of the best RPGs in existence and I'm pretty sure Chrono Cross sold pretty darn well. Next to Final Fantasy, I keep thinking that both CT and CC are perhaps the most re-played RPGs in gaming history. Of course, I want another Suikoden, too, but I believe that may actually happen.
1. Deathrow
It was one of the first games I got for my Xbox - I think the second after Halo - and the only reason I bought it was because of the solid reviews. I really wasn't even sure what it was. But man, this is still one of the most ingenious ideas ever: a game that involves a sport where you toss a disc through a goal, beating the snot out of each other in the process. I was so hooked on this. What was the name of that team you had to beat in the Finals...? They wore all gold and when you got them (after beating them), they were invincible. A sequel would be totally bad-ass; they could amp up the combat and give us more scoring moves, or something. Just gimme.

You should have just put "laxpro's 2 favorite RPG's on the PS1!" as the title there
Seriously though I loved those games to death (currently playing through LOD again) especially Legaia since it was my first one.
Legaia 2 was good but I agree with Oyashiro about the Ra-Seru acquisitions, but they did keep some of the awesome music which I though was amazing.

PS:Ben, the comments have been outstanding because this site has a great community and because you and Arnold give us great things to comment on, like that immersion thing a day or two ago, which was nice, since I got to remember some old things I had almost forgotten, thank you for that.

Another Drakan the Ancient Gates game would be great too. I loved the first one on the PS2 - it had a really nice atmosphere, always feels like I'm "home" when I play it. Great characters all the good RPG type levelling up stuff as well.

I'm also hoping for another Silent Hill, Eventhough the last 3 games have been weak,I still have hope.
Timesplitters IV.... It's got to happen.
Resistance 3 - Very curious on this.
Parasite Eve III - on the works on the PSP, I hope it has pre-rendered backgrounds and is like PEII
Shenmue Saga - Unfinished bussiness.

I don't know if anybody thought of sequels to final fantasy games, I know I know Final Fantasy X-2 just sucked majorly but maybe a sequel to Final Fantasy VIII or VII.
I really thought Drakan and Drakan II: The Ancient Gates was really good! If they made a sequel, I would probably get it.
I know this doesn't apply to the article but The Matrix Path of Neo on ps3 would be sick. I want a Deus Ex sequel as well, it deserves one. But to conclude, we all have different tastes in games(I like mostly every game). I'm sure some of these companies have been discontinued or they are not in business anymore. You don't see stuff from Interplay for those who know that company.

In the FPS genre I would like to see Darkwatch return (I even have one of those badges) Remember? "Death Fears Those Who Wear the badge"
I want another Bully. And I suppose with all this 3D nonsense going around I could stand a next gen 3D World Runner. Umm I want a new DOA and DOAX on the PS3. Gotta have a new Faxanadu for sure... Umm the SNES Drakken needs an update. Jeez Ben I could go on for days.

What I'd really love to see though is 'The Suffering'. I know there was a sequel made for that on the ps2 but I never played it and heard it wasn't as frakin scary and messed up as the first one. They shouldn't even touch the gameplay aspects of this one as it just worked great. I'd be afraid if a sequel was made they'd try build it around some kind of co-op gameplay, multiplayer or something and mess it up. Kinda worried they're gonna do something like that with 'Dead Space 2' but lets hope not.

Platformer = LittleBigPlanet.
Action = GOW3\Uncharted 2
Adventure = Last Guardian/Uncharted 2.
Racing = GT5.
RPG = Not really a fan of this genre, but from what I know next Spring is the season of the RPG's.
Whatever Genre Heavy Rain is = Heavy Rain :).
Now of course, I have no idea how Heavy Rain, God Of War 3, or Gran Turismo 5 will turn out, (apart from each demo) but I`m one of the many millions of gamers that can't wait 'till either are released. & we do have to wait & see how Alan Wake turns out to be, on May 18th.

Selfish I know but nothing has ever come close to that strategic goodness!
Also I want a Grand Theft Auto where you can save at any time during a mission.
I always end up having to drive for five minutes only to open a door and get shot immediately. I don't want to repeat the friggin drive. I want to just open the door and try again!
Happens more than twice and I trade the game! Time is too precious, I'm not a student anymore...

However, I'll say, because of nostalgia, I am looking forward to SW:TFU 2 (I'm a non-practicing Star Wars fan). But I'm more excited about Team ICO's project (not because of nostalgia, but because whatever they do kicks a$$), inFamous 2, GOW3, R2, GT5, and KZ3.
I know, my answer is pretty lame, and devoid of all nostalgia, but that probably has to do with how much more I'm enjoying games now, than I ever did before. And I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 days (which felt like the dark ages even when living in those days because arcades then just showed how much more we were missing out on our home consoles). But after increased number of features, and higher expectations that comes about for each new generation, it's hard not to look back and see how far we've come.
I admit, there are certain classics that hold up wonderfully for me to this day: Team ICO's SOC (I have yet to get my hands on ICO), Ninja Gaiden (I'm talking about Team Ninja's version which has been remade 3 times and still feels great) GOW1&2 (like previous mentioned games are kinda new, but still evoke mild nostalgia), DMC3 SE (which in my opinion was far more fun and action-focused than the next gen sequel), Wipeout XL (although followed up with sequels that are arguably much better games, not one of them captured the timeless feel and atmosphere of this classic).

Apparently there will only be an xbox360 bundle of Final Fantasy 13 available in the west. I wonder why Square Enix would agree to such a thing. Perhaps it was part of the initial deal to bring Final Fantasy to the xbox. I think it's fair to say that Microsoft can be described as a social and cultural pollutant that has managed to throw into disarray the gaming industry. I wish them nothing but failure in their endevour to take over and corrupt all software based industries.

As for Microsoft buying another exclusive thing from SE who originally developed FFXIII as a PS3 exclusive? I despise them for the damage they are doing to the market with their insane game of monetary chicken. It's like the school playground where some intellectually challenged bully kept on picking on the little kids in an attempt to intimidate his peers, despite the fact that they were as big as him and were all but ignoring him. Microsoft and their tactics actually anger me because it's completely unnecessary. If their platform is the better platform, it should success because of that, not because they are prepared to pump millions slush fund marketing dollars into buying a measure of success. How much confidence do they have in their own platform? Not much as evidenced by their continual practice of buying things for it.

Anyway, give me Thousand Arms 2 and I will never ask for anything again (well TA3 maybe :D )
Thousand Arms, that game really redefined rpgs for me. An anime styled rpg with so much class, and a presentation value second to none. Not even Final Fantasy can capture characters like this game did. Very dynamic...
The best part? It felt like a real journey. Most rpgs is like "Go to the villain." This game is a world.....you really explore it.
----
Ben, I agree with Battletoads and Legaia as well
Skies of Arcadia deserves a sequel too! SEGA knows everyone loves this rpg (they even added the main characters of it in Valkyria Chronicles). What's so hard 'bout making a sequel for it?

Renegade (all 3 of them)
Pacland lol
Bubble Bobble.
Rainbow Islands.
Ikari Warriors.
Syndicate (Amiga game I loved this).
Kokotoni Wilf.
Pitfall 2 the decent one none of this 3D one they did on the PS1 years ago (Yes I have it too lol). It was decent 2D scroller vertically and horizontally. In the arcade you could get into the mine carts etc they did this over 2 games on the Commodore 64, 1 was in the jungle, 2 was in the Mayan caves, spent hours playing this. My first ever proper game that started me off on this great hobby of mine now. :)
Sensible World Of Soccer (SWOS). Not the remake they did a few years ago. A decent one for a change.
Goldeneye.
Alundra.
Oh god thinking of some of these takes me back. A lot were platformers.
I dont care what anyone says you cant beat the old retro classic stuff.

My favourite series of books are by Jack Whyte:
The Skystone
The Singing Sword
The Eagles' Brood
The Saxon Shore
The Sorcerer Part 1: The Fort at River's Bend
The Sorcerer Part 2: Metamorphosis
Clothar the Frank
The Eagle
If anyone has read these books they can understand why I love FFT so much (Gaming at it's finest). Heck, if I had the money I would design a game around these books. It's one of those books that you could just see the story/actions in a game or in a movie format when you read them.
Hey Ben, what book would you like to see turned into a game? I mean if you really knew the best game designer (whomever you consider that to be) would work on it what would it be? That would be an awesome article for PSXE. Look at Dante's Inferno, although I don't think it does Dante's Divine Comedy justice, it's a great game to play.
Sorry guys I get carried away sometimes.

But I certainly like the idea of games becoming more story-oriented with better plots and character development. It's why I like Heavy Rain so much. Obviously, we've still got a long way to go but as I said in that review, it's a step in the right direction.

Friday, February 12, 2010 @ 11:16:31 AM
For some reason I honestly think in the future titles like these will be apart of gaming. If Quantic Dream succeeds with Heavy Rain the doors will open for gaming to spread to literary classics or for games to be loosely based on them.
Think the Holodeck from Star Trek: TNG. I truly believe gaming is headed in this direction, far off yes but still possible. My theory is if the human mind can imagine it then it is possible for it to be a reality.
Remember laughing when Captain Kirk took out his cell phone to call the bridge of the Enterprise?

Plus if FFTA is any indication, they might go in entirely the wrong direction (not that it isn't still fun).
I'd also like to see a new Star Wars: Battlefront, but that seems like it actually is happening.

I had my eye on Shaun white snowboarding when it first came out. But then I saw it didn't have any split-screen, just online co-op. That's a huge disappointment in my eyes for a snowboarding game and that alone made me not buy it.

A third 'Zone of the Enders' would be to die for, as well. I know Hideo Kojima has teased about it, so hopefully the day for a third game is drawing closer.
I'm also looking forward to the next game from thatgamecompany. 'flOw' and 'Flower' are two of the best games available on the PS Store and the next inevitable title from this developer will be equally amazing, I'm sure.

Also, I REALLY want a 'Red Faction III'. I'm not talking about that 'Guerilla' stuff, either. As far as I'm concerned, that's just a spin-off. I want a REAL, kick-ass FPS sequel. GTA on Mars just didn't do anything for me.

The way that 3 finishes is sort of final, but not really. There are a lot of loose ends, and well, I can't say much because I know at least one person reading this thread is intending to play it and I don't want to spoil. There is more than enough room for a sequel, although some would say it would be too contrived. I would simply say in reply, it's a JRPG space opera, contrived is it's middle name!
At this point I would settle for the inclusion of the main characters as guests in a future Soul Calibur that features the stars of Namco RPGs.
Which reminds me. I want me some more soul calibur - with a fraking story this time!

I dunno, Highlander: I really hated the fact that they removed shops, AWGS and I think (because at this point I could be confusing 1 with 2) the e-mail bunny/thing with its side quests. Speaking of AWGS, did you get the 3 extra ones? I remember farming so much to be able to buy the cheapest of the 3.
Hey, wouldn't it be a great idea if they did what the GoW franchise did and made a collection on the PS3?
If they DO bring some characters from Xenosaga into SC, I'm calling dibs on Albedo.

I could see so many ways to go with a Xenosaga 4 that followed on immediately from Ep 3, but it would be contrived. There is also plenty of room for a Episode 4 that happens far later in the timeline. However Nintendo now owns one of the developers of the Xenosaga games. Namco still owns copyrights on some (or all - not sure) of the characters as well. So I am not sure that a sequel can happen anyway, it might be impossible due to contractual issues. That said, if they made a Wii/PS3 Xenosaga JRPG I don't think that they would have much trouble selling millions of copies in Japan. I dopn't care if the graphics are HD anyway, the graphics in the Xenosaga games are already phenomenal.

<<<<What was the name of that team you had to beat in the Finals...?
"We march forward victorious on the red carpet of our enemies corpses"
That would be the "First Blitzers",
They were the most violent team, & liked to show it off, by wearing their enemies blood on their gold armor.
Now what do I win????
(I'm claiming dibs on that Blue PS3) LOL

Never heard of the PepsiMan, what's the gameplay on it? Do you have to drive all around delivering drinks before they get warm? Or before the Coke Man beats you with his own delivery????
Don't laugh, but I have 3 Xbox games sold by Burger King, Big Bumpin' Pocket Bike Racer, & Sneak King, all featuring that big-headed Burger "KING" in all of their commercials.
I've also got 7Up's "Spot goes to Hollywood" in my collection too.
And, "NO"....I definitely don't ever want to see a sequel made for any of them, LOL

Of course, I want another Suikoden, too, but I believe that may actually happen...."
I cant agree with more. CT and CC are two single best and my favorite JRPGs of all time.

As even though I would like to see a third Drakan game, there will NEVER be another game in the series unless by some miracle Sony ends up buying Surreal from WB. The same can be said about a third Champions of Norrath.
Anyhow I would say Tourist Trophy, but given the fact Kazunroi-san have twice hinted at a possible TT2 there is nothing else I want other than them getting the AMA, SBK and MotoGP licenses.

I also agree with the person that said JAK & DAXTER. I couldn't believe it when the new J & D game came out for PSP and PS2 only. Was heartbroken. J & D is so much better than Ratchet & Clank. That said, its a shame that Naughty Dog didn't take the helm for the latest version. C'mon Sony, PS3 owners want another Jak & Daxter too. My guess is that most owners of PS2's and PSP's are not the fans of that series. They're kids that probably didn't play the original ones. The real fans (customers) moved on to PS3's. Have a clue.
