Your Favorite RPG Of The Generation?
With so many RPGs hitting in 2010, including one of the most anticipated titles of the generation in Final Fantasy XIII, there's a good chance we may all have to reshuffle our lists significantly before the year is out. But for now, what's your favorite role-playing game of the generation?
It'll be interesting to see the responses. I know I've been talking a lot about Lost Odyssey lately, but that's mainly because I'm sad to see turn-based disappear and LO is the last console RPG that used that old-fashioned mechanic. It didn't have the best graphics in the world and the actual storyline wasn't too fantastic, but I really enjoyed the setting, the characters, and the extremely awesome combat mechanic that kept me coming back for more. However, being a fan of great writing in games, I should also add that the Dreams really stood out for me. They still represent some of the best writing I've ever seen in games; each one must've been professionally written by an accomplished scribe. It's weird that the same quality didn't really come through in the actual storyline, but whatever. The whole game was maximum fun from start to finish.
Then there's Dragon Age: Origins, which certainly occupies the #2 slot for me. I normally don't like that type of RPG but this one got me from the start, probably because the battle system reminded me a lot of Final Fantasy XII. I liked the challenge of it, I liked being able to build my character from scratch and watch him grow, I liked the D&D-style environment; I just really liked it all. I never did finish it - Assassin's Creed II sort of distracted me - but I put a good 40 hours into Origins and I certainly don't regret it. I will have to buy the sequel when it arrives and although I keep hoping for a Lost Odyssey sequel, I'm pretty sure it ain't gonna happen. :( All this being said, I really do expect to love FFXIII, despite some skepticism I have for it; if it doesn't supplant LO as #1 on my list, something went terribly wrong.
I should probably try Mass Effect 2 although I hated the first one; any game that gets such high review scores really can't be entirely ignored. I also want to give Resonance of Fate a try, although I'm not so much into the futuristic gun battle thing. Okay, so what's your fav RPG of the generation so far?

The reason the dreams in Lost Odyssey stood out from the main storyline so much is that they were indeed written by a seperate novelist. Such brilliant work.
I would have to say Lost Odessey has been my favorite RPG this generation so far.. but I truely love the look of FFXIII. I personally like the approach they took as I don't usually like breaking away from the main story until the end of the game anyways. And from the sound of it there will be plenty to do when the main story is over.
On the subject of WRPGs.. I tried.. I really did. I hated Mass Effect and got very bored with Fallout 3. I don't think I'll be going down that road again any time soon.

2.) Dragon Age
3.) Oblivion
4.) Eternal Sonata
5.) Folklore
That's of the ones I've played enough of to judge them, I won't include Valkyria Chronicles because it is pure strategy. I expect WKC and FFXIII to take those top two spots, or at least I hope so.

i normally hate cell shading but it actually suited the game, and gave the area a airy feel.
hope they do another one but this time lay down on the enemies please?
it gets so frigging annoying when im trying to collect something but cant because every time i stop to grab it i have a million enemies trying to kill me.
so i kill them, there is no one left, so i go back to collect the item and magically another million enemies magically spring out of thin air.
thats what destroyed borderlands for me, well that and the 3 game saves going corrupt on me.
i can handle having to redo the first 10 missions twice, maybe 3 times.
but 4?
i dont think so.

I cant tell you how many hours I have invested into Fallout 3, but all together it is probably around 300-400 hours. It is a fine game.

Just a quick question regarding Fallout 3 GotY Edition; is it really buggy and unplayable (or practically) past a certain point or in general? I ask because it certainly interstest me and I've read and heard good things about it overall. I've considered getting the GotY Ed. and may still when it's at a resonable price point for me.
However I figured I'd ask here since I'm a member, I tend to value many's opinions here and quite a few have listed this as a fave (or one of) as well as having becoming very familiar with it. Feedback especially concerning this aspect would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

No game in the current generation has come close to doing that. I have White Knight, but have not yet had the time to dive in head first. From what I've seen of the game though, I doubt it will change my number one choice.
Seriously looking forward to Nier and FFXIII for a nice change of pace in RPG's.
One can't help but find it sad that the genre has not had much presence on the PS3 until now, though the next few months should be more than interesting.

I guess I'm gonna have to break down and buy FFXIII when it releases just to see if I should officially hate SE or not. If I look at it like a prologue until Versus, I can probably get over the missing elements that make for a complete experience.

1. MASS EFFECT 2 (it's that good)
2. Valkyria Chronicles (RPG-STRAT?)
3. Demon Souls (bring on the challenge)
4. Oblivion (I'd say a benchmark this gen)
(don't you guys forget it!)
5. Dragon Age Origins (loved baldurs how could
I not love this one?)
In regards to Mass Effect 2 Ben... Don't let the gameplay throw you off. The characters and stories that follow them are awesome. It is Bioware at the top of their game. The universe is also extremely detailed and very creative. I really am starting to feel ME franchise is the spiritual successor to the Kotor series (though I hope they make a new "real" KOTOR soon.) It also is a great display of what "mature gaming" is. The maturity is not defined by blood, guts and sex, but the by very mature events that unfold. Things that little kids just won't understand the way a mature audience will understand them. So I hope you DO give it a chance. (but it might be best to wait until the inevitable PS3 version comes out ;))

And like I said, I've never really liked the sci-fi setting. I'm always more into the traditional swords-and-mages thing. But I do plan to try ME2, at any rate.

I did my 1st playthrough fairly fluently.
Its ol' school difficulty, something that NEEDS to come back instead of hold your hand games of this gen that insult my intelligence.
This is how mind numbing this gen is, i ordered a ps1 classic today, Alundra because i miss true gaming and actual difficulty.

2) Dragon Age: Origins
3) Disgaea 3
4) Tales of Vesperia PS3 (import)
5) Ar Tonelico III (import)
Is having import games on my list cheating? Well, they're good games and I do own them.
I suspect my list will get shaken up quite a bit when FFXIII and Resonance of Fate hit (yeah, I could have imported those too but with the US release so close it seemed silly).

The characters were all unique and interesting, the gameplay was turn based which did not seem 'old' at all to me. The status effects played a vital, more than i've seen in previous RPG's it's not a game you can get through just using attack, i found myself using many magic and abilities.
While the story could be tacky at times, i also hit me deeply at others. I have to be honest i did'nt like the style of the dream 'sequences' they were far to long, if i wanted to read i would read a book, at times it would amount to the size of a chapter in a book. It was just a wrong use of the media for me.
Theres even more to Lost Odyssey, and this is where i think FFXIII falls flat and thats a shame. the mini-games. lost odyssey had some fun mini-games and extra scenarios. It was just fun and boardend the game, its a shame to lack certain aspects from a game, but i will see what FFXIII has to offer in a few weeks.
And to top L.O. all off theres a World Map, which is convincing! while you cant run on land, you can travel by sea on vessels, That was certainly enough to satisfy me.
The only other RPG from this gen i've played is Fallout 3... but to me thats a completely different type of game, certainly not an RPG in the same sense as Lost Odyssey or a FF classic.

Just wanted to point out that the last traditional turn based JRPG this gen wasn't actually Lost Odyssey but was The Last Remnant. I don't blame most folks for burying it since the initial 360 release got trashed for being a technical trainwreck of dropped framerates and long loading times, but for those with a decent PC I suggest you check out the PC version. It's not groundbreaking by any means and the story/graphics/sound are good, not great, but the squad-based, turn-based battle system is pretty yummy stuff for anyone more interested in the strategic side of RPG battling.
Anyways, my favorite RPG this gen is hands down Demon's Souls. Then Valkyria Chronicles, if we're counting it as an RPG. Then Star Ocean 4.

I don't know, I suppose you could categorize it as a strategy game if you really wanted to, but giving it a play it feels much closer to a traditional RPG than say something like Valkyria Chronicles or Disgaea.

But back to the point, Lost Odyssey is the best and my No.1 RPG or (to be more specific) JRPG this gen, no doubt about it.

I've played only a few FF and I've definately played all KH series. Oblivion's on there as well. I can't think of anything more... This is killing me that nothing more comes to mind! Ugh, it's too early for me lol.
Anyway, I have not played Lost Odysssey, but I would like to give it a try when I get the chance... But, until then, that's it, I guess. Your answer Ben; Dragon Age: Origins.

Demons Souls comes in 2nd but it's a really close race even though that game hates me on a personal level.
I'll give 3rd place to Fallout 3. This one actually surprised me to make it to this list. I traded it in a long time ago and just bought it back about 2 weeks ago from a bargain bin and then got completely taken over by it.

You know Hironobu Sakaguchi is working on his "new" Final Fantasy? Its called The Last Story http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/slsj/
He claims it will be a new beginning of a new form of JRPG that will go on to spawn a whole franchise like Final Fantasy.
As you can tell from the link, the logo is similar to a Final Fantasy logo and the music is fantastic.
Its a Wii exclusive though which kind of makes sense as Final Fantasy began on a Nintendo system.
It could be a Wii seller for me if all goes well and future installments could be on Playstation.
Hironobu Sakaguchi's studio Mistwalker could grow into a new SquareSOFT!
The studio was tied to MS at 1st but, that was only for two games (Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey) and now they're independent....wth is Sony waiting for?

But I hate playing anything in first-person, even shooters. Oh, and I was being stealthy, so I needed to see myself.
EVERY game should offer the ability to switch back and forth as the situation necessitates.
Oh, and WolfCrimson, Oblivion is more of a true RPG than anything that has ever come out of Japan...which is not to say those games aren't great...because they are; they're just not really Role-Playing Games.

I enjoyed Enchanted Arms actually, and Star Ocean 4 is quite good - when it's not bloody crashing! That game crashes more than any other I've ever played. there is a bug so that if you press a button on the controller when the game is transitioning into a cutscene or battle or from one scene to another, the game locks. The music keeps looping and you can still operate the PS button to quit, but the game is locked up. Seems like there should be a fix for that.
Haven't got into WKC yet, though it's resting on my PC waiting it's turn.
Cross Edge was silly nonsense - and fills a void if I want some turn based silliness, though the system is not ideal.
Still running a few PS2 games on occasion though they clearly won't count as current generation.

Fallout 3 GOTY.... if mine didn't have so many damn glitches. Seriously, not sure why mine chooses to freeze up lately, but it happens more often with the gOTY version than the original version i use to have
I really enjoyed Dragon's Age, a lot of fun, but it could have been better. A random loot system would have been really cool for that kind of game. Graphically it could have looked better also.
Borderlands is all kinds of amazing, the loot system is exactly what what have made Dragon's Age even better. If you were a fan of Diablo 1 and 2, you owe urself a favor to play this game now

I have to say that Demon's Souls was pretty good, but I still have my favorite RPG's in this order:
#1:Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne
#2:Digital Devil Saga series
#3:Demon's Souls
#4:Persona 2: Innocent sin
#5:Brigandine -Legend of Forsena
I might try the copy of WKC i rented today.

2. Dragon Age: Origins; <3 Bioware
2. Valkyria Chronicles; I've never loved a strat RPG so much, sucks that the sequel is going handheld instead of console. Haven't touched my psp in a year and I couldn't even finish Crisis Core
4. Eternal Sonata; The demo turned me away from this game for quite a while but I gave it another chance and I'm really glad I did.

2. Demon's Souls of course
3. Dragon Age
Fallout 3 would have been on my top 3 but on my first play through i was exploring and looking around and I talked to someone and it caused me to skip more than half the main storyline. I guess my adventurous nature hurt that game for me. Should have been able to talk to people without skipping the story.
Dragon age honestly only made it on top 3 due to their not being a whole lot of ps3 rpg's that i've played this year. It was great but i found it a little disappointing that there wasn't much to do in the way of lvling and free roaming, i don't have to have it but it felt a little boxed in and not like a real world. Like a game full of small rooms.
White knight is open and huge, and Demon's souls is a never ending challenge that i can play from now till the end of time. Just keeps getting harder, awesome.

If we're only counting RPG's on the home consoles then i'd have to say Folklore, that just beats Fallout 3 and Dragon Age for me. Although i'm sure Folklore will get knocked off the top of my list once i get White Knight Chronicles and then Final Fantasy XIII.
