Appreciate The Diversity Of PS3 Exclusives

As a gamer, I can't possibly stick to only a few genres. In fact, I really don't like to play two games from the same genre in a row. At the same time, these days, I really only have time for the best of the best. Now, because so many of the best titles of this generation just so happen to be platform exclusives (and not just for the PS3), I've realized that these exclusive titles really need to be diverse. Quality is great, but who wants to be bored?

See, it kinda works for most all platforms. Look at the Xbox 360: I was able to play Lost Odyssey (by far my favorite RPG of the generation), Halo 3 (and ODST), the Gears of War games and soon, Splinter Cell: Conviction and Alan Wake. In my opinion, nothing tops the PS3 exclusive lineup but again, it's not only about the quality; it's about the diversity. Look at what we've been able to play over the past few years-

Resistance: Fall of Man
Resistance 2
Warhawk
Heavenly Sword
Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
LittleBigPlanet
Valkyria Chronicles
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
inFamous
Killzone 2
Heavy Rain

Then you can toss in the PSN exclusives like Flower, Wipeout HD and Shatter, plus what's coming: God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, The Last Guardian, etc. The point is, do you see how many different genres are represented here? Even if I only stuck to exclusives for both the PS3 and 360, I'd not only be playing the best stuff out there, I'd also be having a lot of different experiences. I don't want to do that, of course (I ain't missing out on Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Dragon Age, Final Fantasy, etc.), but you know what I mean. Last year, I sort of started with Killzone 2 and ended with Uncharted 2 - with the treat that was inFamous in between - and those are very, very different.

If I had to pick my favorite games of the generation, I'd go with MGS4, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, Lost Odyssey, inFamous, Dragon Age: Origins, Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, and Flower. The only multiplats that get in there are ACII, GTAIV, Bioshock 2, and maybe a few more. But these are just my choices; if you use the entire PS3 exclusive list, you've got third-person action (like Heavenly Sword and God of War III), third-person shooters (like Uncharted), RPGs, FPSs, racers, platformers, and unique/original titles like Heavy Rain and Flower. The Last Guardian and Gran Turismo 5 will punctuate that variety a bit more. Really, we should appreciate this amount of diversity.

In the end, we want the best stuff. And everyone basically agrees that exclusive games tend to lead the pack; the elite of the elite, if you will. But man, I'm just glad we're not fixating on only one or two genres...I'm never bored with the PS3's exclusive lineup.

If I had to pick my favorite games of the generation, I'd go with Uncharted 2, Eternal Sonata, Warhawk, inFamous, DemonSouls, and Flower.

Honestly the biggest surprise for me was flower... thought I would enjoy it but I didn't think I would be touched by it nearly as much as I was. So simple, yet so great!

am i the only person who actually prefered prototype to inFamous? i do admit that it was an amazing game but once i played through once on evil nd my bro played thro on good i didnt feel like i needed to play anymore, i personally didnt like that once you cleared the zones that there was nothing worth going back for and if you finished the zones and the game without all the powers you were more or less s o l

Just type Eternal Sonata into amazon and the ps3 version should be first thing on the page.

you can pick it up for $25 + $8 shipping and handling which is an excellent deal in my opinion. Trying to find it in store will be a challenge.

EXTREME EDIT: I can't believe it but I forgot to include Valkyria Chronicles in my favorite exclusives. Didn't get to finish it before I went abroad but a very cool game thus far.

Beat both, and I like them both for their differences, and not for their similarities.

Prototype is literally a meat-grinder. No real thought behind it, just kill...everything, preferably quickly. Good, Bad, I'm the guy with the big effin arm blade.

InFamous is slower, more methodical, isn't nearly as hack-n-slash as Prototype, and has it's own little details and design touches that make it great.

Either way, both were great buys (Prototype for PC), and really thoroughly enjoyed the hell outta them.

now all we have to do is get more people on the PS3 to buy more of these games. I mean uncharted two came out and it sold about 3.5 million to date, while mass effect 2 came out and it sold 2 million in the first week. Us PS3 owner have to buy more games rather than just braging about them. I personally bought every game on that list besides warhawk and Valkyria Chronicles, all i have to do is save my lunch money everyday lol. Meanwhile my friend only has about 4 games, but he's always hyping games like heavy rain, which he never ends up buying.

Yesterday I was at Best Buy. No PS3's. Zero. They had about 70 Xbox's. Two rows worth. 20 of them were Tekken 6 bundles. Xbox is done.

I think that the diversity also can be found with great campaigns, as well as great multiplayer components found on other (and sometimes in the same) games. I also must point out that the PS3's diversity is larger than that of the 360.

I would've thought you'd put Demon Souls on that list Ben.

Best TPS: Uncharted 2
Best FPS: Killzone 2
Best Strategy: Valkyria Chronicles
Best Racer: Well, it WILL be GT5
Best Sandbox: inFamous
Best Action: GOWIII demo, (yup the game will take the cake, but just the demo beats any xbox exclusive action title)
Best RPG: *sigh* the box might have us beat there till Versus comes out.

But that's a damn good track record, what is clear is that while xbox appeals to one or two types of people, Playstation goes out of its way to appeal to everyone. How much can you beat the living hell out of Halo, really?

@ johnld - You're absolutely right. When it comes to strategy, VC is top notch. That's not to say the graphics and story and something to scoff at. The game is fantastic all around and I'm thrilled to have grabbed it at the price I did. I really thought the map view would drive me nuts as it did in the demo, but the game is fast paced and quite engrossing.

The reason i bought a ps3 was for the diversity (and im a huge insomniac fan). The Wii and 360 just dont have the variety of games like LPB all the way to Killzone and Heavy Rain. Theres really something for everyone and i'm enjoying all the different games coming out just this year so far.

More important than just variety is the fact that these games are always at the top of their genre. God of War is easily the best action game. Gran Turismo has always been a cut above any other racer. Uncharted is easily the best and most polished 3rd person shooter out there. Not only does Sony deliver diversity, they deliver top-notch quality and thats what keeps the gamers coming back (even if Sony is a little slow getting the ball rolling).

Don't forget MLB The Show. That is one exclusive that shows diversity, not on your list. Diversity is the exact reason I got a ps3. I realize I am opening up to many more genres ever since I joined the Sony family. If I got an xbox, I would be playing 90% Shooters.

Amen. i was just telling my Xbot that the reason i stuck with the PS3 and ditched the Xbox was because i was tired of shooting martians(besides the red ring too). Xbox is the shooter console for the most part.

thats seems pretty obvious huh since they seemed to design their controller for FPS. At least thats what i heard from xbots, "360 controllers are best for FPS". Pure bull, i can kick ass in FPSs even if you give me a ps3 controller while they use 360 controllers. sometimes the 360 controller hold me back a bit because of its trigger button. i played modern warfare with its single shot m14 on 360 they tell me i can fire it pretty fast, same thing on ps3 and i get accused of using a turbo controller.

i was actually not expecting it to be scary, but there are certainly some spots which make me well not scared but certainly tense.
not only the big sisters shriek, but some of the action scenes like where the lights blow out and you can hear something really big getting closer and closer and closer.
but nothings there, gets really creepy!

story wise id have to go with bioshock 1 only because it had that shock and awe moment where bioshock 2 did not.
i love it when games come back and slap you in the face and leave you in disbelief like infamous did.
over all bioshock 2 had a better story, subject delta and Elenore are much more interesting subjects but it lacked the explosion.
all fizzle and no bang.

thats what allot of people are forgetting, they call dantes inferno a bad game because its a GOW clone.
a game CAN NOT! be a bad game just because its a clone, however it can be considered a skip if you will because its a clone.
i personally prefer horror games, but that is only because we very, very, VERY! rarely see a decent one.
if the industry was flooded with horror games like it is with RPGs or shooters id hate them.
as the old saying goes everything in moderation.

I love Horror games also. That's why I'm hoping for a next gen Fatal Frame. If one does come to life, please let the characters run with more urgency.

Horror has lost two series, it seems : RE has become action-oriented, and now Dead Space 2 is looking to go down that same route.

Well John, I think EA hoped that releasing it around the time of GOWIII would kind of force the xboxers to buy it so they had an action game with similar mechanics. I'm still glad I got it, definitely the multiplat of the year until New Vegas comes out.

I wasnt saying its a bad game nor its not worth the purchase. i was just saying that among the ps3 crowd, it was a bad choice to release the game so close to god of war. Thats because god of war basically the game that goes hand in hand when you think of this kind of gameplay. if i was into these kind of games i would definitely buy it. However, i dont like playing games that become, well, button mashers. I am going to buy god of war 3 just to see what the fuss is about. Thats why im planning to play the entire god of war series in one go. God of war collection is sitting on my shelf right now waiting to go.

As for the 360 side, it would've been smarter for them to release Dante's Inferno the same day as God of War 3. Why? to lure in those xbots who would purely buy this game to bag on god of war. you know, those "GOW is crap, dantes is way better" excuses. or "why would we want GOW when we got dantes". you know how they love to give themselves dumbass excuses to justify they 360 support.

sadly we have lost many more series than just resident evil and dead space though.
silent hill,F.E.A.R, siren, and a few others.
what i would give to see monolith go back and create F.E.A.R 3 but like the first, not the second.

as for DI, yea timing is a double edged sword.
on one side you have the thought why buy this when a superior similar title is on the horizon.
but than on the other side its a game to tide you over, thats why i wanted it because i love hack and slash games and need every morsel i can get!
o, that and its set in hell.

No Batman Arkham Asylum love ben? I agree,Its great that ps3 has a lot of different games. but this is also part of the reason why ps3 exclusives dont sell as much as theyre supposed to. Theres just too much DIFFERENT choices for us. In 2-3 weeks, im planning to buy 5 games, ive done that before. Heavy rain, Bad company 2, Final fantasy 13, God of war 3(never played 1 and 2 but planning to play the whole series in one go since i got the collection), and resonance of fate.

Cole can be a superhero, it just depends how you play. The story is crazy good in that game though and makes you feel like a guy hard done by, but happens to have wicked powers.

the camera on genji pissed me off the whole time. its one of the few games i had to force myself to finish. Luckily i only borrowed it. right now i dont remember anything about the game at all, and i think thats a good thing. i was going to pick up Timeshift but my brother beat me to it and bought it for the 360. That game was crap.

Great article, I would have to say my fav exclusives are Resistance 1 first one I picked up for my PS3, Heavenly Sword second one I picked up, Unchartered 1 and 2, and heavy rain. For upcoming I know GOW III will be.

im gonna have to hold off on final fantasy for now. from all the news i read and comments made by people here in psxextreme, final fantasy games might be on their way down quality wise. I believe final fantasy always meant the best the game can be. i dont care if you make it multiplatform but make it the best it can be without taking anything out. if they really want to get FF13 on the 360, they wont care if its on 20 discs. the smart fans will buy the game on ps3 while other fans will get it either way.

My favorite ps3 exclusive so far has been Resistance(hell its my favorite ps3 game franchise). I love the design of the chimera and those guns from R1 are pretty bada$$. Here's hoping R3 comes this year, with many of R1 feature, weapon wheel, health bar.

Oh and by the way heavenly sword is a really good game, i dont underatand why we haven't gotten a sequel/prequel yet.

heavenly sword was amazing and i really want another installment of this game. also resistance 1 was my first game on ps3 i just remember being awe-struck on my 1st play.

I thought the devs that brought stuff to the 3-fix-me weren't allowed to make people install stuff, since not every box has a hard disk, if this is true, then I lol even more at 360, but then I remember that final fantasy shouldn't even be on that side, n then I hate the box again.

its true about the installs but its all optional. i think it said that you can install about 6 gigs per disc

That's why I luv tha PS3, if I ever feel like playin an fps, I get killzone, if I feel like a 3rd person, I get either one of the Uncharted games from my shelf, just so many variety. Haven't got Heavy Rain yet, though(yeah, I know...) I'll wait till I'm done with God of War, by then I'll probably have enough moneyz for it.

Come to think of it, 10 of my 13 Blu-Ray games are PS3 exclusives. The notable exceptions being: Batman Arkham Asylum, Assassins Creed 2, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.

I'm enjoying MAG immensely right now. It reminds of me a 1st person Warhawk with more streamlined squad mechanics. Speaking of Warhawk...what a gem it was when it first came out. It was my favorite PS3 game for a while.

I bought my PS3 for the exclusives. I find that another underrated exclusive is the entire MLB: The Show series. I cannot wait for March 2nd to come!

Heavenly Sword is quite fun but I will never buy it because for an action game the gameplay doesn't last for 10 hours which is a joke.

But aside from this, just about every PS3 exclusive are amazing.

Some of my friends are now wishing they had listened to me and got a PS3 and not the 360 because of Heavy Rain and GOWIII alone.

At least I get to lol at then for having to pay to play a game online games that they have just spent a wedge of dough on to buy.

I loved R&C:ACIT. My #1 of 2009, followed by glorious Uncharted 2, and a very close third inFamous, then Killzone 2.

Ratchet has this unique effect of being a mood-uplifter, and ACIT is a rare example of a game that is actually a joy to platinum (for me anyways). So much of variety, and so much to unlock, with puzzles and story that never get boring.

My favorite downloadable was Wipeout HD/Fury. It is also my favorite racer.

Multiplatform surprises of this generation for me were GTA4, and Deadspace. Batman:AA, and AC2 were landmark achievements, too, but were a tad bit boring for me.

My favorite 360 exclusive was Ninja Gaiden 2, until ps3 got it, and it even got better IMO. I liked Gears 2, but I didn't play the mp, and the sp dragged on a bit for me. I'm gonna get Mass Effect 2 after I'm done with Heavy Rain, though. So, I'll see how much my favorite list will change then.

Gears 2 Multiplayer is one of the most poorly created mutliplayer experiences I've seen this generation, you shouldn't have any regrets about not playing it(horde was good, but it wasn't anything new)

I know it's disliked by many but I personally thought that 'Afrika' was one of the most relaxing and unique gaming experiences I've had in a long time... and it's also exclusive to the PS3. It's definitely not for everyone but I enjoyed every minute of that game and my girlfriend was intrigued enough by it to watch me play it from beginning to end. It was very addicting and something I've never really experienced before on a gaming system. I would've loved DLC packs for it but considering the critical backlash, I doubt that will ever happen.

Yeah, it definitely had its technical issues but I was still able to look past them.

I'm hoping for some sort of sequel, too. Unfortunately, considering sales and reviews, that'll probably never happen. If it does happen, it'll probably be for Japan only.

Dead Space (downright creepy goodness, cool weapons, great story, best S/H game since Silent Hill)

U2 (wasn't that a great movie?)
RC:FtoD,ACiT (great installments in the series)
inFAMOUS (playing on hard is the only way to go)
Resistance:FoM, Res2 (frantic single player and fun multiplayer)
Killzone 2 (now all they have to do is to have a better written script and 3 will be golden)
Demon Souls (fav RPG thus far by far)

So much stuff I need to catch up with and this year isn't even half over!

I'm glad the PS3 still has it's Diversity. The 360 has FPS games and shooters with some occasional car games and a few RPGs, which some have already been ported to the PS3 as a more perfect, complete version.
