Your Hobbies Outside Of Gaming
Every once in a while, I like to do simple editorials designed to facilitate discussion and conversation, both here in the Comments section and in the forums. It's more important than ever to do so now, because we continue to grow and grow...when we first started counting registered members, it was maybe around 4,000. Well, it's over 14,000 now and we've shot from maybe 50-75 Comments per day to around 300-400 daily, and forum activity is really starting to pick up. As you may have noticed, we also have some larger ad campaigns on the site so on the surface it may appear we're going "big and impersonal."
Yeah, well, not while I'm around.
The reason we continue to grow is because of our community. I could get all egotistical and say it's because of the content - which of course we work hard to produce - but in reality, we know just how important our awesome community has been and will continue to be. Therefore, we will always keep that small-town atmosphere, as idealistic and cliched as it sounds. So, let's talk about what you like to do besides game. We all have to take our favorite hobbies in moderation, so let's hear it. I'll get things started-
Reading
I love to read. I've often thought about doing some Week in Reviews or other editorials specifically geared to my other passion, but I know few read what I read. I have this insatiable drive for the classics; for the absolute greatest books ever written. I want to read as many of them as possible before I die. It's why my favorite books are Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina," Edith Wharton's "The Age of Innocence," Thomas Mann's "The Magic Mountain," and George Eliot's "Middlemarch" and "The Mill on the Floss." I just finished a complete collection of short stories by Flannery O'Connor and I'm currently reading Virginia Woolf's "To The Lighthouse." I know I'm weird. I know I'm in the vast minority.
Exercise/working out
I've been working out for about 8 years now and only in 2008 - when I realized I was getting older - did I finally incorporate cardio into my standard weight routine. So when I started in July of '08, I could only do about 15 minutes on the rower before becoming completely exhausted, but I'm happy to say that after a year and a half of hitting it hard three times per week, I can now go 55 minutes at a good clip. Really, I'm in the best shape of my life. As for the strength training, that now consists of two 55lb. barbells and one 65lb.; I do four or five difference exercises with those. So I'm working out six days per week and if I miss a session, I feel like hell.
Food...GOOD food
I am so sick and tired of chain restaurants and over-processed "food stuffs" that so many Americans call "food," I find myself searching for better-quality, better-prepared food. Yes, it costs a little more but in my eyes, it's worth every dime. The portions aren't designed for cattle, a good chef will provide a flavor and taste explosion, and it's true; presentation matters. We have so little around here, though; I have to drive a good 35-45 minutes before I can break the boring and repetitive string of Ruby Tuesdays, Chilis, TGI Fridays, Applebees, etc, etc, etc. Dude...they're all the same restaurant and not a one features good food. That's all I'm saying.
I also like to play tennis when the weather cooperates; I've been playing since high school. Other than that, things have calmed down a bit for me in the past few years. When I was writing for the papers and handling entertainment features, that involved some interviewing of celebrities but you know, that is nowhere near as glamorous as it sounds. I could barely pay for the gas to get to those interviews; getting $50/article makes it tough to live. It was only freelance, after all. So people would go, "oh wow, you got to talk to 'insert celebrity name here;' that's awesome!" and then I'd just say, "yeah, I was about ready to ask them for a loan." These days, I just sort of work and live. A calming period, I suppose.
Okay, how about you?

I too read - not as much as I used to, and almost entirely fiction.
I like good food, and cook. Personal favorite to cook is Indian food.
I collect things, but I won't say what unless someone guesses it. You'll never guess though.
I'm a parent, a husband and I work full time. I get less time to 'do' things than I want, and more time to spend at a screen than you might expect.
Oh, and I'm a trekkie.

Let's try this one: You collect videogames, or maybe you collect something psycho like pieces of people's skin you keep stacked up somewhere, which you gain after you've killed someone with some genius trap thingy.

I also love writing. I would have seriously majored in English/Journalism if it wasn't for the fact that you have to read those boring books (traditional reading using books is painful, unless they have a lot of art to go with it).
Sports in City areas is ridiculous (dumb imo). But I'm trying to get back to weight lifting again.
I also have great ears. Can easily identify good music (no matter what genre).
Furthermore, I love learning through video/tv programs. SPECIALLY if it's history/science related. A big fan of the History channel (and trusted websites)

What you said reminded me of a friend at the Art Institute of Dallas who drew a picture of a bear for one of his assignments. He got mad at me because I laughed for about 30 minutes when I saw it. I have never seen anyone draw an animal that had a look on it's face as if it were embarrassed of itself. It had a piglike look to it as well.
Man, that was 20 years ago. I can't believe how long it's been.

And I'm attending Videogame Art Design classes, so I could say that 3d modelling (haven't started with animation yet)

I also like history, my favorite period being WWII. Most books I've read in the past year have been on WWII, although I find time for an occasional L'Amour here and there.
Fishing is another one of my main hobbies, and fishing season is coming up soon! Any other fishermen among us? I just started doing it regularly 2 years ago, so I'm still kinda new. I usually fish out of my Kayak, which is another hobby of mine. I live so close to the adirondacks that there are literally hundreds of lakes, ponds, rivers and creeks to pick from within an hour or two from me. It's awesome.
I give you alot of credit for playing tennis Ben, every time I play I'm incredibly sore in places I didn't know existed. I'm convinced that the muscles used while playing tennis are ONLY used while playing tennis.

Actually I tend to read... a lot. I always read the descriptions and anything readable in games, like books in Oblivion, or codex in Dragon Age and Assassins Creed 2. I read books, although none lately. I read anything of interest on the internet.
I listen to music about 80% of my time awake. I read about music (lol, seriously). I have about 12 gigs of music on my PSP. My PSP is basically a highly advanced MP3 player with good games. I also work as security during outdoor summer concerts.
I personally know a Suicide Girl, which is awesome. She is only a hopeful, well at least she was only a hopeful.
I'm the camera man for my friends and their skate team, although I can't skate at all. I try to snowboard, but I can't really do that either.
I also like to work with Photoshop and similar programs. I'm not the best but I think I'm pretty good.

I myself workout a lot. I haven't been going as long as you, only 3.5 years (I'm also a little younger) but I love it to death. I just restarted up the cardio and each day its gets better and better. I go everyday and do a lot of isolation training.
It's great too because I get a huge sense of accomplishment. I must have said at least 4 times "once I get xxx up (benching) I'll probably stop moving up" and yet I get used to the weight and surprise myself. The complements are also a plus.
Play Guitar. Well, attempt to. I don't want to be one of those people that can only play 10 to 20 songs that everyone knows and be considered good. I want to be someone that can jam because he knows basic theory behind that. That being said I'm not good but I do enjoy it.
As for reading, I read a little. Usually its something like self-help books just to improve on my flaws. Also I read informational books that will hopefully help me in my future occupation. The last book aside from these that I read was Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which of course was inspired to me by the DW series ;)
Sports wise... well its been a while but I've been having the urge to play lacrosse again. Played it my whole life, then got sick of my parents forcing it on me, but I kinda feel like I can't escape it anymore.

Due to this demanding schedule of mine I actually cannot do that much unfortunately, but I am working to change that when I finally get to move to New Zealand 3-4 years time... I will be semi retired then and have lots of time on my hands for writing and working on my own creative IP's which I hope to turn into commercial products.
I am currently working on one, but very slowly - and actually stopped for a few months when domestic issues took over. But I am regaining myself now, getting better organised and soon will be back in the thick of it I hope.
I will tell you all about it later, as I am thinking about turning into an RPG possibly; and if the community wants to get stuck in with ideas or what have you why not? Also input from Ben would be fantastic too..

I am currently working in the telecommunications industry as a consultant, so we service all the major operators in and around Asia... speaking of which I will be in Vietnam next week for exactly that... meetings and more meetings... but such is life. Luckily for me, people like to talk, and talk a lot... communications is essential for our modern society so in many ways it has been "recession proof" to some extent. Having already been in Asia for the best part of 8 years I have missed the economic fallouts in the west, it hasn't really affected me here at all... again, combination of hard and luck to some extent...
Talking about New Zealand operators... "2degrees" is one of my customers... I think you know of them luxpro :)
In fact I may need to go to Auckland in the future, so if you are there I will let you know via PSXeXtreme :)
@Ben...
Ben you are most welcome to Singapore anytime... if you do make it here, or if you want some advice on what to do and where to stay just email me. I will also meet you at the airport so you have a friendly face to welcome you to the tropics...
I do this quite a bit for friends and family and as I live 8 minutes from Changi, it is pretty easy for me. The country is amazingly efficient so, for the most part, traveling in and around Singapore is a breeze. Singapore Airlines is voted year after year as best Airline in the world, so make sure you use them, the service is fantastic... probably has the best looking Asian hostesses you are likely to see, they all look like models...
...I need to do a little more work on "re-configuring" the I.P. before launching it in a state that new ideas or contributions can be taken on board...
The initial idea was the easiest, maybe go down the writing of a fantasy novel or book initially, and then from this written world craft a workable game I.P. (or film I.P. for that matter)...
I may have mentioned this before but the cartographer from the "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy, Daniel Reeve, has crafted the logo of the I.P. for me, and will do illustrations as and when requested, however, as I am still fleshing out the world, it is pointless to do that now, it is too early on in the process.
One little highlight, when I was in Wellington having lunch, I was only the 4th person in the world to have seen the Skull Island Map used in the movie King Kong, amongst other things of course... That was pretty cool... and also the rough pieces of paper used by Frodo to practice his writing with the quill... The "there and back again..." text which we saw he was scribing on film... that was pretty cool too. :)

Sometime this year probably, just trying to get an idea of when I can if it is not for work...
Regarding the recession, what can I say really, these days corporates turn around and just cull when and if they need to... none of us unfortunately can ever feel completely relaxed and just enjoy life whilst working... simply put we have half of humanity in India and China wanting our jobs... how do you complete with that!

@Shams I agree with you assuming you work out other muscle groups as much as chest meaning you'd be relatively as strong in other muscle groups then you would be more than capable, but also as you said form is ultra important and that's what I lack big time.
I'm not too worried about it anyway. I just find it funny when people look at me and assume I'd be amazing at arm wrestling when in fact I'm horrific.

And almost have Grade level 1 kanji down.... (but that's barely 50 or so kanji)
Out of the 1945 commonly used kanji lol
Though, they say if you know 600 you'll be fine
Yeah, Japanese writing is the biggest hurdle of all.
Everything else is easy, speaking/listening.
Here, let me get you started with kanji:
http://quickkanji.com/
and for all kanji combinations:
http://www.learn-japanese.info/firstgradekanji.html
It takes Japanese students 6 or 7 years to get 1945 kanji down.....
So don't go too crazy 'bout it. Just learn 2 or 3 kanji levels per year and you'll be set

I love excercise but I get quite a bit through work so I don't do heaps of it at home but a little bit.
I love to cook, and although I'm not great it's something that I realy enjoy and want to get better at.
Love listening to music, HipHop that is. Both past and present hiphop is great, I've built up a little collection of cd's. Live shows are great but I don't go to as many as I should. I missed seeing RZA with Frukwan a couple of months back, would have been excellent. My last show was Pharoahe Monch in december.
Sport. Although I don't really play anymore I still love to have a kick of the footy every chance I get, and when the season starts at the end of the month I hope to go to a few games. AFL that is.
Hanging out with friends. I have a fairly large group of friends and whatever mood I'm in I know that atleast one of them will be up for the same thing.

Nothing makes me happier than good food. Feed me well and I'm the happiest person around. I dislike fast food and seldom eat it.
I enjoy reading books, especially biographies. One of my most memorbale experiences was reading Wild Swans by Jung Chang. I also learn Japanese in my spare time. Ever since I was young I wanted to learn an asian language because of its seemingly challenging nature (particularly the written component of most asian languages). It's been around 2 years since I started and I must say I'm extremely proud of my efforts. (By the way, www.guidetojapanese.org/learn has all the resources you need)
I'm the type of person who loves a challenge and immensely enjoys the thrill of completing a difficult task (probably one of the reasons, amongst many others, why I cannot stand FPS games). I also like playing touch footy (of the Rugby League variety).

I couldn't agree with you more on the food part. Add to the fact that eating out also takes a toll on the finances, and you have what has led to a hobby of mine: cooking. Especially BBQ when the weather permits here in New England.
I also read, play guitar and being a home owner, you can throw in some yard work and maintenance too.
I used to collect sports cards and comics and some action figures, but I've kinda out grown that....or at least that's what the wife insists.

I love to read, fiction. I love novels, novel series, comic books. Look at my avatar, obvious right. I love ongoing stories with good characters.
I love to rollerblade, sadly where I live now, there is nowhere to do it. Our streets are worse than rollerblading on gravel I swear. My favorite is downhill, as fast as I can. Going 75mph on rollerblades is a thrill like no other I can tell you that.
I love to downhill ski, you should realize, I'm a speed freak. I like to drive fast, ski fast, rollerblade fast. Anything that makes the world fly by at incredible speeds, I'm up for.
I like to watch TNA wrestling. Big fan of high flying, acrobatic wrestling, with good and humorous stories.
I am a collector. I am probably the opposite of Highlander tho, he sounds like a specialist. I collect lots of things. Comics, of course, nice action figures, video games, miniatures, dice, bouncy balls, marbles, books. Probably something I'm forgetting.
I love to sing. I have been in 2 different bands but neither went anywhere sadly. Ego's, biggest cause of failure for so many bands. I wish to high heaven I could play piano. My parents couldn't afford lessons when I was young and now maybe one day.
I am married and have 2 wonderful dogs, which I've trained Cesar Millan style. Training my dogs is a hobbie, takes a lot of time and patience believe me. But they are really well behaved.
Biggest thing has always been the same though.
I love to write. I love to write songs, poetry, short stories, I just love to write it all. I am currently working on my biggest project ever. I'm writing a novel, but it's bigger than just that. I have an entire universe to construct as I plan to make a series that could lead to so much more.
In case anyone is curious, it's sci-fi, and before you groan, just know that I have a heart for stories that make you want to believe it is real. I want to put Star wars and Star Trek to shame. I know that's laughable, I'm a trekkie, I know what that statement means, but it's my dream.
So that's me in a nutshell I guess, sorry the nut was so big. =)

I realize I share a lot of things with the other readers here, I too love to *learn stuff* and Discovery is the obvious choise of tv channel - especially when Mythbusters are on.
Other than that I'm into electronic music, both as a listener and composer. Groovy, dirty breakbeats and instanely tweaked basslines makes my heart pump faster, with UK act Far Too Loud as the definitive masters. I've never heard anything like it.
RC (radio controlled) cars with nitro engines is another hobby, or some would say obsession I've got. I count 12+ cars now, the newest addition being the MP9 from Kyosho - omg what a car.

I like to read, mostly Stephen King books interest me. I help coach little league baseball for my oldest son's team. That is a lot of fun watching your son get better and better at a sport you loved as a kid.
I love taking weekend trips to Vegas, I play blackjack mostly.
Love movies too. Went to the theater all the time years ago, but now it is just so damn expensive to go.

I like food a lot, but you couldn't tell from looking at me. I could eat like a pig and not gain weight. This locally owned restaurant makes some of the best strawberry pies I've ever eaten. I have to be careful with those, because I don't want to get burned out on them.
I like to write a little and draw. I got accepted to The Institute of Children's Literature but never took them up on it. I'd wanted at one time to illustrate and write children's books, but I found drawing to be a much easier task than writing.
I'm supposed to be painting a picture of my friend's pitbull, but I haven't started yet.

Martial Arts though unfortunately classes have become expensive and all my money goes to my college stuff.
Collecting, Reading, and creating manga/novels.
I play the Yu-Gi-Oh Trading card game and collect certain cards. (People have said it was childish and that I should stop, but the same people all say it's too complicated for them to understand... so yeah, I'm not stopping).
Working out when I can since I am busy most of the time (after most women like fit guys).
Cooking/Baking
Drawing (because as I've said I am working on a manga project, plus it has been required since I go to an Art school...)
Table Tennis/Ping Pong I haven't played this in years but I'd still school anyone I know, I'll get a table eventually).
That's pretty much it...

Hobbies:
Live opposite a canal so love to go kayaking. Also 5 minutes from the beach (Queensland in Australia), so walks and swims in the surf.
Reading: Got an extensive library of ancient Roman and Greek history books. Also collect the Penguin Classics.
Collect ancient roman and greek coins. Remarkable that you can buy a pretty good condition coin that has been in the ground for 2000 years. Have a 100 or so ancient coins in a coin cabinet.
Cooking. Love to cook Thai, Indian and Chinese.
Buddhism. Starting going to some courses at the local Buddhist centre. Trying to become more compassionate and enlightened! Meditation is an excellent way to de-stress though the PS3 is more popular most days.

I am pretty great at cooking.
I dig a few tv series and watch heaps of movies.
And finally I am lucky enough to live in a beautiful city surrounded by mountains and a quick bus trip to some great beaches so I like to walk around a lot.

I also draw, mainly figure drawing, concept art or story boards. I used to study Art aswell, i found that i usually made scanerios in my paintings, for me film was a chance to flesh out these scenarios. The other reason i decided not to continue my studies in art is becuase of 'Modern Art'. The amount of times i've gone into a gallery and been irritated by pathetic work is astounding. I'm talking about blank canvases on the wall and a messy bed in the middle of a room, modern art if you can back up any work with a string statement it's accpeted, which in my opinion is wrong.
Reading is something i've have only recently got into (Which i certainly regret). I generally read popular fiction as i have just started but i intend to go on to read many secret novels as i get more confident. I also want to become more literate so i can write better scripts, this is also something i have only just got into. my previous work at college had no dialouge in.
There the main things at the moment. i'm hoping to start playing the piano soon, though i just cant afford lessons at the moment.

I also work out. I've been lifting weights on and off for quite a few years. Got a nice barbell set and a weight bench. I'm not as young as I used to be though. Used to be able to follow any insane workout routine. If I were to try to do that now I'd have one pulled muscle after another. I do a full body routine three times a week with a moderate amount of weight and higher reps than I used to do.
Play a lot of golf in the summer, also play guitar occasionally.

Humes, "Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion" is a wonderful rationalistic masterpiece.
Spinoza's "Ethics" is similarly striking on the cause and effects, and the illusory nature of free will.
Good to speak to a fellow traveller.
Nietzsche is a bit bleak for me but Plato and Machiavelli are always good for a read.
Voltaire is a favourite of mine, but also controversially is the Marquis De Sade's "Dialogue Between a Priest and a Dying Man".
Cheers!

- climbing(without safety equipment, something like low-level free soloing) - every time I get the chance
- Mixed Martial Arts(3 days a week,4 hour sessions)
- parkour(when the weather/conditions allow it,I do it everyday)
Those are the physical things.
Other than that
- philosophy, psychology, thinking(of course, everyone gives me weird looks because it doesn't suit my age)
- reading - extremely wide range of genres, from books about animals(Gerald Durrell) to The Art of War(Sun Tzu)
(again, weird looks are present everywhere I go)
- good music(mostly rock/metal)
- computers - from C++ to freeware games modding(like Little Fighter 2)to webpage making to Photoshop ... and others(currently trying to get my first level CISCO certificate for network supervision).
- hanging out with a couple of close friends(2 times a week, sometimes often)
Seeing as I'll be reaching 17 years old after 16 days(and I'm still very restricted for being a minor)and I'm still required to go to school, that is all I can manage for now.

i would learn the guitar but i've never had the time. always too much work.
i used to do freehand rock climbing (climbing without the gear) in the park where i lived was this huge rock face of boulders and rock wall, i loved climbing up there.

Not only is Silent_J right, that many many things of scientific knowledge are stated in the quran, but on a personal scale too.
Science says matter cannot be made out of nothing, yet they say that's how the universe was created. whats not to say that a higher force like Allah/God forced a big bang (or collision if you believe the singularities theory) to happen to create the universe and then shaped that matter into what we know (and don't know) today. No religious books say scientifically say how it happened, just that it did. I'm sure it could be explained scientifically aswell. Obviously the first cause can't be explained (that would be God), but let's not get into that.

I am a huge Dr Who fan new and old series. I also like Star Trek, Red Dwarf.
I love watching the football (soccer) in the pub with my mates while having a few beers. I also play snooker regularly every Friday after work. Been attending the local snooker hall since I was old enough to play on the tables.

Being outside. Anything that will allow me to enjoy the weather; beach, hiking, even walking.
Technology. I like to understand how things work and I do end up like a sponge and can read for hours upon hours to fully grasp everything to do with certain technologies. I'm fascinated by peoples' creativity.
Cars. Following advances in car technology, working on cars, racing cars, etc.
My family. Having kids is great and that we play together and I relive my childhood through them and get to be goofy again. It's awesome.
Those are my main hobbies but I do have other little ones that I don't do as often.

Anyway, as for me, I am a software programmer so that takes a bit of my free time, I also love to read and am starting the Sprawl trilogy by William Gibson, I play guitar and years back played in a punk band that never did anything but we had a lot of fun. When it isn't freezing cold I train parkour or when I get down to Florida I do so with my little brother who I just got into it, I still sometimes find the time to skateboard, and I attend a good number of concerts.
That's me in a nutshell I suppose.

Writing, novel style, I'm currently writing in English and I wouldn't mind putting a little sumthin' up in the forum, if anyone would be interesting in reading it.
Next up: Gaming of course, Playstation 3 mostly, sometimes PC if I don't feel like turning on the PS3.
Also: Freerunning. I just love running around in the summer sun, jumping over things, climbing on buildings and whatnot, showing off backflips at school.
I: Do enjoy reading too, a big fan of Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child's work, I don't know if any of you know "Relic", it was my first 'grown up' people book, I read it a long time ago and it still sticks with me on the choices I make picking books.
Of course: Cooking is one of my hobbies too, as my father is from Indonesia, cooking comes like breathing to me(ok, it does require some practice, sometimes), one advice, always use fresh ingredients when they are available, you shouldn't mind that extra fifty cents when it comes to what you eat. And eat healthy, don't use too much fat and make sure you get your vegetables, just sayin'.
That would be about it.
PS: reading articles and comments on PSXE is also one of my hobbies.

Er, anyways, yes, hobbies:
Tennis! I'm obsessed! Football! I'm obsessed... when it's football season. And I don't cook much, but I've been doing some experimenting with the wonderful device known as the "Crock Pot." I like to try making seasonal soups and whatnot in there. Also, I make a mean Mac & Cheese. My own mac & cheese is probably the best tasting mac & cheese I have ever eaten. So it's nice I can (cheaply) treat myself to something that good whenever I want it.
