Editorial: Random Bits And Pieces

This is what happens when I'm totally out of ideas or my mind simply isn't working well enough to form one cohesive thought for an entire article. So...random pieces of junk from my brain.

-- FFXIII feels so...freaking...WEIRD. I don't think I've ever played a game where I've continually felt a distinct mixture of unbridled joy and total entertainment. One minute, I'm just focused on what I'm doing, enjoying everything about it and the next, I'm totally down in the dumps, complaining bitterly that it wrenched so much strategic control out of my grasp. With every new FF, I'm almost always amazed and absorbed. They're always highlights of a generation for me. This time...no. But even so, it's oodles of fun (most times) and I know I'll finish it. Man, whatever. It's just crazy.

-- What is the DEAL what that chick who hosts "Food Wars" on the Travel Channel?! Her name's Camille Ford and holy mother of God...so CUTE. And I LOVE her voice. The show is stupid as hell but she's aaaaall I need. My God. Hey Camille, you play games? Let's do an interview. ...PLEASE.

-- If I'm going to get a new TV for 3D, it won't be until next year (I think). It's going to be an expensive proposition and while I suppose I could do it now, I'd rather not. Besides, I'm still a little leery of this whole 3D thing...anyone else? Almost by default, it's supposed to be even more engrossing; an added dimension should be fantastic in this way. But I dunno...something about it seems a little disconcerting to me. Can't quite put my finger on it.

-- They sent me a voucher code for The Taxidermist DLC for Heavy Rain! Yay! The only problem is, even though I consider Quantic Dream's masterpiece to be a better overall game, I can't seem to tear myself away from FFXIII... But there's no doubt I'll get to that extra stuff in HR. Still my favorite game of the year.

-- So listen, I'm taking a bit of a personal survey and if you'd like to participate, I ask that you e-mail me at my psxextreme account. It's actually just one question but you might have a lot to say about it. Ben, the 3D TV question in particular will no doubt be on the minds of many as this year rolls out, however, I think I am right in saying that the "consumer" is shopped out. The temptation is there to jump right in, and knowing Sony, their Bravia PS3 3D combination will no doubt be as slick as we can expect... with some rough edges needing to be "patched" over time.

I for one have one basic rule. If I want to play 3D games on a 3D TV the package must use the same technology we see in the movie house; i.e. using polarised glasses with an HD display, for true crisp 3D... otherwise I am really not interested.

I am also one of those individuals that is really prepared to wait 6 months, a year... however long it takes for the technology to "settle down" and for games to attain a visual quality that produces a crisp deep 3D image with decent colour levels, otherwise what is the point.

Additionally, I would like to also remain in a "wait and see" state for the Sony Move controller... The software will be key of course, if it is good and compelling, and really worth my while, I may take the plunge... otherwise I am quite happy with the D-Pad.

What happens down the line, expect quite a few "party" titles and innovative games... 3D puzzles, Eye Pet, cutesy sports games etc... I am sure the PS3 and PSN will deliver the full spectrum of possibilities.. .

...But... let us hope that "shovel ware" does not raise its ugly and unwanted head... "gaming spam" anyone?

Heck yeah, this may sound weird but when I was a little kid and the adams family movies came out. I fell in love with Christina Ricci, and her sadistic attitude on the show only made her more appealing. LOL I was weird then, but not much has changed. ;)

That was pretty random, especially the Travel Channel bit; although I agree. I bought a nice TV last year, so 3D is out of the question for at least a couple years for me. I do welcome it though, when I saw Avatar in the theater I was thinking how cool it would be to have a game like God of War in 3D like that.

And off topic, has anyone gotten the 1000 hit combo in GoW3? It's the last trophy I need and can't think of an easy place to do it.

There's no way in hell I'm buying a 3D tv after Ive spent money on this 120 HZ 1080p (which im PERFECTLY happy with). I thought new TVs could update themselves for stuff like this, via a USB or connecting it to the net.

I have that one, too. Better than my Sammie from last year (lna40650), and $500 cheaper, too. Colors pop more, darks are darker, and due to the higher refresh rate intrinsic to plasma technology, there's no need for the 120/240hz bogus. Plus, it displays more colors than LCD, so everything looks better (GOWIII is absolutely breath-taking, and U2 is also a sight to behold). Only draw backs is that Panasonic is infamous for a poor sound in their TVs. It's there way of making you put down extra for a sound system. But TC-P42S1's not so bad. Oh, and the other draw back is that their not as power efficient as their LCD counterparts, but this and last year's Viera models improved this.

Mr. Ben, no thoughts on GOWiii, yet? I'm looking foward to hearing your's on that.

3d is going to have to get a lot better before I go spending thousands of dollars on tech that isn't up to my high standards. I'm always looking for the best quality for the lowest price. I bought me a 32" Vizio lcd, that is 1080i, a little over a year ago and I love it.

It has better or equal picture than my friends 1080p and I paid a lot less. Sadly they don't make this model anymore, sad because it's awesome.

Before I commit to 3d I'm going to have to be incredibly impressed by the quality, has to be available without the glasses, and the price will have to be affordable. So for me probably not for 5-6 more years, but that's ok, I have plenty of patience.

As for Camille, she's a pretty lady, but I'm happily married to a beautiful brunette, so sorry guys, but "Go me!"

A little question about The Taxidermist DLC. Not to spoil anything for people who haven't played it yet but there are 5 different scenarios or endings you can get and 1 of those is that Madison dies.

Does anyone else think that is weird? I mean, this is essentially a prelude to Heavy Rain so if Madison dies in this how can she be a main character in Heavy Rain. Am I being too literal?

Would this not be like watching a movie where a character dies and then the studio putting out another movie that takes place later and the said character playing a major part in this movie? Just a question. I don't know how to feel about this one.

Sidenote: Even though the DLC is short, it is well worth $4.99.

It isn't unheard of for a film to have a different ending where a main character dies, but yeah it's a little weird with a prologue. Still, if there is no consequence for playing poorly then there is no real tenseness about that scene, and it WAS an intense scene. But technically she didn't die die, she just went missing :)

After playing a bit of Resonance of Fate, I have dreams of FFXIII and RoF getting married and having a wonderful JRPG baby.

FFXIII has the story and RoF definitely has the battle system, sidequests, towns, npcs, and world map.

Would be a beautiful union.

Still not going to buy Final Fantasy, I will play it eventually, but not in the near future, since I just got God of War III yesterday and I'm waiting to get Heavy Rain, which I'm really looking forward to, after playing the demo and hearing about it from all you guys.

Checked out Camille Ford just now, and I have to admit, she does look cute, don't know about her voice though.

As for 3d-tvs, I'll be waiting some time for those, at least until the PS4 is out and until they have perfectioned the whole thing so it doesn't need any glasses anymore.

I will now go mail Ben, though I don't really know what to say, I'll just try and come up with something.

When it comes to love/hate relationships with games, I'm going through that with Need for Speed Shift. I LOVE that game, so much that I decided to devote the time on it to try and get my first platinum trophy. But then I found out that it was impossible because some of the races ran in slow motion, so I could never beat the required lap times. So I hated it! Now they finally (after 6 months) came out with a patch to fix it, so I love it again. But then last night I had a race freeze up on me - hate! But then I tried it again with a different car and it worked just fine. Cautious love now I suppose :)

As far as 3-D TV's, they're just too expensive for me. I bought my first HDTV last year, and I wouldn't even consider replacing a $500 TV unless it broke or wore out. I'm probably going to get another HDTV for the bedroom this summer, looking for something in the $400 range. Any 3-D TV's around that price point? I think not LOL. I'm also hoping to get a nice 250GB slim to go with it.

personally , i think we are close , but not quite there yet with the 3d thing....glasses are somewhat uncomfortable sometimes, but i gotta say , i salivate like pavlov's dogs at the tought of playing flight sims or acting/fps games in full 3d...especially flight sims, also a GOOD star wars game with move and 3d support....yeah i bet you salivated a bit too ;)

i think the tech is in its infancy yet, but were getting there and i think we will see fully 3d gaming sooner than we might think ... not only that, but that could open the way for 3d computing too, eliminating the need for a clunky mouse ...ahh the possibilities!!

The thing that worries me about the 3d Tv's is that I'll have to wear them over my glasses. I have worn glasses since I was 18 months old. I have had 2 operations on my eyes look away if squeamish (where they put a couple of stitches into the muscles at the back of my eye, the left one). Now when I go for an eye test the opticion says oh I see you wore eye patches and have had the operation, he can all this by looking into my eye ??? I wore eye patches on my good eye to make the lazy left eye work. to a degree it has worked some as I now have a bit more control over my eye. It used to wander in of its own accord when I took my glasses off now it stays where it is but I cant see everything is blurry.

Anyway if they do make the 3D tv and it comes with the glasses. I hope they will fit over my regular glasses otherwise im screwed basically.

camilles got this thing wheres shes constantly yelling in that show. kindof a turnoff for me, but if you dont care then go for it!

and i'm not buying a 3d tv until the tech they use to make it 3d is standardized. i'm not droppin $100 clams for another pair of proprietary 3d glasses. if its standard, then we open it up to competition, price goes down, and eventually someone comes out with specialty glasses like those that will go over eyeglasses or will work if the brothers missin an ear.

Man I've just been in love with XIII. I had that feeling of a loss of control, but ever since I've got full control of the paradigm system, that feeling has lessened. And man, this game is still pretty massive.

caesars pizza used to be the sh1t! but the hot and ready killed it. they even changed the crust for their deep dish. i cant get ranch dressing in the caesars in my town. and the kfc here doesnt have bbq wings or cornbread anymore. what is happening to the world i once loved?

I love Grease hut over Dominos. If you have a take n bake Papa Murphys, give it a shot. Very good. Papa Johns, well I tried it when they first came to Minnesota and it didn't tickle my italian bone. To each their own though right? I actually make the best pizza out of any of them. It amazes me I have no woman when I'm such a solid cook.

Well my copy finally arrived.... been playing for hours now, fantastic game IMO, but now I get what all that "not final fantasy" feeling was all about. Anyway I'm really enjoining it, especially the combat now that that "little" 15 hour tutorial is over. Maybe I should get some sleep... Nah maybe after the next boss, je je...

McDonald's fries are ok, Checkers/Rallys fries are better in my opinion. And I don't think there's a White Castle anywhere in the south. There's a fast food restaurant called Krystals that has square burgers, they're not bad.

Many of us are bothered by viewing angles (mostly PC monitors nowadays). Well, 3D imaging will make us rehash an itchy rash with viewing angles as you have to watch it dead on. Angles will essentially "omit" the 3D layering. Lame. Seriously, If i walked into someones "cool" house with a bunch of people floggin' 3D glasses to watch TV/Play video games.. I'd laugh my way back out the door.

I never "plunged" into FFXIII. I just purchased GOW3 and definitely am not regretting it! I read a few reviews (WARNING! Spoilers! But gamespot being one and i believe gamepro was the other) that said the plot was a waste. I don't know. Since the game is so recent I'll bite my tongue so I don't taint any gamers' experience.

I'm personally very fond of the PS3 Move. Especially since I have a 2 year old girl to tinker on it with and a little boy expected in July! :) It looks decent. I think it'll buy more PC gamers, too. Many of us get pissed at aiming in a FPS using analogs instead of our responsive mouse. This is the first thing that'll bridge that speed and depth of focus.

When it comes to success between 3D gaming and the Move? I'll vote for the Move. 3D is great in a theatre where you sit and stay. In your home, you'll be much closer to the screen, thus altering your viewing angles way more significantly. You'll need to purchase tons of glasses just in case you do have guests. What if you run out? Do you watch 3D and leave someone hanging?

The Move on the other hand will just expand the experience physically. It'll have a learning curve and require some space, but it doesn't seem to be as space-hungy as the Natal system where you have to keep your feet moving in their demos! (That's another topic, but boy that didn't make much sense to me! Inbetween 1/4-1/2 mark.. How about the mother and daughter kicking a ball? HAH! @ world not sure how u're dominos is but ours here in Canada where I am is horrible, worse than pizza hut, I prefer Pyramid pizzs little pizza shop that has awesome prices and great pizza.
@ TEG3SH I love burgers we have a place here been in business for ever sonny's and man damn good also love pita pit subs are over priced and taste like crap at subway. I do like Mr.Sub but love pitas more, more filling LOL. I'm hungry now!!!

I'm not sold on 3D televisions yet. While I'm sure it would be awesome to watch 3D television or play 3D games, I'm not keen on having to wear a pair of 3D glasses to do so.
