Ben's Week In Review: May 2
This month is looking crazy...lots of games to handle and at least one or two I want to play for myself.
Early PS3 games "tainted" by negative press?
Ninja Theory raised an interesting "theory" this past week, as the developer said Heavenly Sword and other early PS3 titles suffered from negative press. Not so much about the games themselves, but more about the console. Back in 2007, the general word-of-mouth wasn't exactly positive and Sony was still in need of several price drops and the growing exclusive lineup to push hardware units. But I'm a little confused as to why chief designer Tameem Antoniades even mentioned it...what difference does it make now? And is it even true, considering that Heavenly Sword sold 1.5 million copies? It almost sounds as if he's making an excuse for the studio's decision to go multiplatform. But the position of the PS3 has changed just a tad since then, so what's he saying? That going through the negativity back then somehow scarred them? I guess I just don't comprehend the point of the statement.
Look, you don't need an excuse to go multiplatform. Money is money. And a small developer stands to make a whole lot more greenbacks if they go multi. So in 2007, the negative propaganda likely impacted software sales for the PS3. But it clearly didn't hurt Ninja Theory's game and it doesn't matter now. So...?
Bungie's done with Halo. ...sounds about right
So the big news is that Activision/Bungie deal, and I'll be interested to see what emerges from that relationship. It's obviously a multiplatform title of some kind, and it's a big ol' "action IP" of some sort. Bungie cleared things up by saying they're finished with the Halo franchise, so that's that. And while I am someone who has played and completed every last Halo offering - including the lackluster ODST - I really don't mind in the slightest. I have high hopes for Halo: Reach, which I'll certainly play, but unless it's light years ahead of Halo 3, I'm not sure I'll care that much. Killzone 2 is a glimpse of what FPSs can be in the new generation; Halo 3 was Halo 2 with slightly spiffier visuals. So I've been bored with that for a while. However, that being said, I still think Bungie is a really talented team and they're fully capable of delivering something pretty darn special. I just wonder when we might see the announcement...
Personal gaming update
I'm right at the end of God of War III and I've also been playing a lot of Nier, which I find very entertaining and even relaxing in some ways. It has its fair share of problems - as I outlined in my review - but I'm willing to overlook them because this is just my type of game (sans the traditional combat). I just like the way it's set up, that's all. Beyond this, I have Red Dead Redemption, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, and 3D Dot Game Heroes on tap for this month. I'm hoping to get them all from the publishers. Arnold should be handling ModNation Racers and Lost Planet 2. Like I said, it's another busy four weeks coming up.
By the way, I'm still really surprised at the behavior of that GameStop employee. I know that kind of stupidity exists but it really can't be out in public. If you want to act like that, stick to some sort of fanboy forum hellhole. You don't mislead customers because you're a biased idiot. The good news is that I went back to the GameStop I usually go to today and sort of refreshed myself; the guys there are pretty cool. They're totally on board with the idea that Call of Duty is entirely played out, too, as they were laughing about how bored they were with the series. They say they have to tell everyone about the new Black Ops, and they have to "put on an excited face." LOL
See, it's not all GameStops. That's probably important to understand.

I think the whole purpose of leveling up your characters immensely is that the stronger they are, the faster an enemy is staggered. I don't think the philosophy of the game was to make you kill enemies in 1 hit after you've grinded for what seems like an eternity.
I wish that was the case though....

I think at least a 1/3rd of failure rates are due to hardware being damaged by the user, without the user even realising it.
Problems an owner could create such as:
1) Moving the equipment about, banging it and not being gentle with it can cause unneccessary vibrations. This in turn could weaken or dislodge components on the motherboards and misaligh laser heads in drives.
2) Major issue is not enough ventilation. Console vents clogged with dust and not cleaned regularly. Also consoles stuffed inbetween other objects on shelves where ventilation is almost non-existant. Consoles pushed up to close to walls or in small areas trapping heat. (Heat being one of the main causes of failures)
3) Putting consoles on carpeted floors, full fo dust and hair. This has great potential for damage over time... again, heat related.
4) Leaving consoles where pets can get to them. BigMidget, this should have not happened to you... it's obvious too keep this equipment stowed up somewhere high, out of way, unless your dog regularly climbs your shelves.
5) Any foods or liquids standing next to your console is suicide, why do it and take the risk.
6) Use decent quality fuse extender plugs for added surge protection.
7) Space and height around your equipment is a must...

If there's a game that's gonna be at least the equal to UC2(Who knows, it could surpass UC2) , I'd say it could be RDR, I heard that RDR has been in development for 5 years has it?
Now as for Ninja Theory.....perhaps they see their 1.5 million copies HS sold as a failure compared to Motorstorm which sold 4 million if I'm not mistaken.
In my personal news.....due to financial problems, I had to delay my PS3 purchase till July.......

I can't imagine Bungie doing something to far removed from what they're known for. I expect another FPS after the manner of a Halo.
I think what's most interesting is the timing for Bungie this time around. Halo was born on a platform with new and powerful processing. It was the go-to game for early Xbox adopters that sort of cultivated a small culture of MS gamer. Later MS launched XBox Live, and so, once again, Bungie got to lean on a new paradigm for Halo 2.
What will be the spring board be this time? I don't want to suggest that Halo has been nothing more than lucky timing, as it was also a great game. But I feel a good magnitude of it's success can be attributed to a synergetic outcome and not by it's design merits alone.
I'm curious to see how a latecomer new IP will do entering into a crowded genre of similar games.

This week my PS3 can beat up your PS3 because it now has a 500GB hard drive in it. Of course, even though my trophies were supposed to sync with PSN they sorta kinda vanished for Dante's Inferno as soon as I put the game in. I assume they will vanish for the rest of my games too. I'd go back and find the problem if I cared about trophies but meh.
I've been playing Bayonetta, and wow that game is stupid. No idea why you liked it so much Ben. But by God I'm gonna get my $30 worth and finish it.

There are some online strategy guides but no cheats. There's not a lot I can tell you except for don't let him stay close up on you for very long. He has a pattern to his attacks and I'm sure you already know you can't block the attacks that glow red.
Hang in there and you'll get it. My daughter played it on easy mode. She made it all the way to the end battle and that's where she's been stuck.
Kai is an awesome character and one of the most adorable. You just have to see this story through to the end. She'll make you laugh and cry. She's what makes the story come alive in a special way.

I love the DMC games and I'll defend them to the death. I also think most of them are more FUN than Bayonetta because the latter is just so ridiculously challenging. But Bayonetta is also the only game that rewards insane levels of skill with unparalleled satisfaction. Sadly, I'm not good enough to taste that satisfaction very often but in glimpsing it, I was amazed.
That's where all the 9s came from, I promise.

And Ninja Theory's not the same company they used to be.
I can see through it all*
Enslaved will be a game most gamers will forget in a month or two.
If GT5 and The Last Guardian release near it, it will so get overshadowed on the ps3 side. And the same situation with Halo Reach.
I think the only way Enslaved would actually stand up to exclusives is if it had a lot of blood/gore and a lot of killing like Assassin's Creed
Would be awesome of Santa Monica picks up Heavenly Sword and make a sick sequel with it. Characters like Nariko and Kai are too awesome to leave behind like that. Specially Kai....she's amazing!

Thinking that the CoD series is "entirely played out" is as incorrect a statement as saying "all you need is Halo and Gears."
What a REAL sales person would do rather than simply put on their "excited face," would be to actually educate the customer and advise them that the last installment was the biggest selling game of all time and millions of people still play online six months after its release.

You have to quit taking it so personal when someone bad mouths the COD franchise, especially the subpar MW games.
@Scarecrow, I agree that it is on a decline but it was just the last game that was subpar. WaW had a great SP experience and I am looking to Black Ops to deliver the same.

Therefore, a sales person may not like the CoD series, but for them to say it is on the decline is just plain wrong. The CoD franchise is more popular than ever.
In regards to sales equating to quality, well, hey, thanks for putting words in my mouth. I wasn't discussing quality here, I was discussing "decline" as in "no longer popular."
But obviously you're on the "it's cool to hate MW" bandwagon and cannot see my comment for what it is. Not MW or CoD propaganda, but rather, GameStop's consistent lack of ability to hire sales people who know something about gaming trends.

At the same time, as good as they are, I don't believe we need one every year and yes, I believe that makes them "played out." As for the employees at the store, that's hardly the only reason they're decent; I only used it as an example, because most employees would just push what they're told to push without having a brain of their own. And don't worry, they'll push it and tell people to buy it. Just personally, they're not that interested.
Seems to me like you have just as itchy a trigger finger against CoD haters, and to me, it's equally unwarranted.

hell freaking iron man 2 is rated M and its a freaking kids game!
PoP has never been about gore, its been about adult themes dark scary nitty gritty stuff and dark humor like the two thrones.
they said there going back to the style of the original, but thats certainly what its looking like.
one look at the latest gameplay trailer they released would tell you that.
i wanted another game just like the 2 thrones, not another one like the PoP fantasy remake.
as i said before PoP rated PG is like god of war rated PG or toy store rated MA it just does not suit the series.
it looks like ubisoft are just doing this for a movie cash in!

If you ask me, reading books, watching movies, or playing games continuously in one sitting, will get anyone sick of any medium for a bit. And to me, that's what sounds like what's going on. It's best done in spurts. Trite cliche, but a true one: Variety is the spice of life. You gotta mix things up.
As for my gaming update, I have been playing Episodes of Liberty City (Disc version) this week. I'm only on TLAD, and despite how unpolished and utterly broken it is compared to GTA4 (I've seen framerates drop to the lowest I've ever seen before, and levels just black out because of assets and textures failing to load at all) it still is best example of the previously mentioned idiom. The game is still great fun, even though it is in the same setting as before, and despite it being quite broken as game this time around (they could've polished it up while we were waiting for it). While not nailing anyone thing right (besides the driving and voicing acting imo), it keeps things interesting by taking every genre and mixing it up in proper measure. The game has been squeezed down to ps2 size, and it shows, yet Liberty City is still immersive and fun.

As for growing out of gaming, that's a feeling that may come and go. I've felt that way at least a dozen times in my gaming career, but it was really only because I had gotten sick of too MUCH gaming. Either that, or there was a drought of games that interested me. But eventually, the love always comes back.

I still don't understand all the excitement over Bungie going multiplat. The market is already flooded with the type of stuff they put out, much of it made by developers at least as, if not vastly more talented than they are. All Bungie have really done is Halo, which has gone downhill to the point where the last game was a $60 map pack with outdated graphics. As someone who has access to the full library of PS3 exclusives, I just don't see why I should care. Maybe because now they've teamed up with Activision, and our hopes for their future are dramatically raised? [/sarcasm]
Personally, I got my platinum on Dead Space this week. Also played the first chapter of Blue Toad Murder Files. It was very cute, but I was expecting something with a lot more interactivity. You basically sit and watch it, and then pick up your controller and work on a puzzle. Glad I only bought the first chapter. I just started on Red Faction Guerrilla last night. Looks to be a lot fun, I'm still learning the ropes.

I definitely feel that the negative press on the PS3 itself, served to hurt overall sales of the first couple years of titles, but I also can't deny that the price of the hardware helped turn it off to consumers also. I think however, that Ninja Theory made more than enough fans to warrant a second crack at the HS series, and with a much much larger install base...I highly doubt they'd underperform.
Yes, Bungie moving on is a good thing for everyone.
Currently playing Stalker: Call of Pripyat, GTAIV L&D and SC2 Beta on PC, ModNation Racers and Infamous (again) on PS3.

As I have high hopes for the movie, I am pretty excited about the game as well. For the latest PoP I really had to force myself to like it. It was a solid and enjoyable game, but some of the direction they took the franchise disappointed me. I will see the movie regardless, give it a chance negative nancy!
Lastly, PGU:
I have been playing the crapzilla out of Bad Co. 2, and the new Uncharted2 Siege mode, pretty fun stuff. My brother bought Mass Effect 2 and the L4D's so I have been playing those too. ME2 really is pretty awesome. There is so much going on with the game and so much in the 2 DVD's(sad haha) I noticed a few spots where that had to cut corners, I always look and think of how much better it would look on the PS3, less low res textures, and smoother.
Oh and World, I think Bayonetta is pretty fun, I am enjoying a tiny bit more than DMC4, which was good.

PoP is not suppose to be a fu**ing kids game, so why are they turning it into one?
if i wanted a kids game id go buy one, not PoP which was once such a story driven well thought out brilliantly designed platformer.
sands of time was crap for its combat but its puzzles really made it shine, warrior within had the best of both worlds, the two thrones had even better combat and the puzzles were different cant say better or worse just different.
the latest PoP game was decent, for a spin off but its not what the series is suppose to be like.
so why are they continuing it?

Beat Darksiders and Bayonetta over the past few days. I can see the possibility of another Darksiders game and I did enjoy it.
