Final Fantasy VII HD Is Inevitable

Arnold is going to absolutely hate me for writing this; his optimism - that seems to return afresh for every E3, concerning the possible announcement of a Final Fantasy VII remake - has been irretrievably dashed. But oh, it's coming.

Now wait a minute. Before you start quoting all the dozens of reports directly from Square-Enix and Final Fantasy creators, trust me; I've heard it all. I've heard the ridiculous estimations of how long it would take to recreate the game in full high-definition; I've heard the excuse that S-E would need to reassemble all members of the old team, and I've heard the widespread belief that Square-Enix simply isn't interested in the idea. But there are a few things that have happened recently that make Final Fantasy VII HD more than a possibility; they make it an inevitability.

Firstly, there's perhaps the most telling incident, which is when Square-Enix sort of mentioned an FFVII remake on their Twitter page, and the page virtually exploded. In response, the FF maker actually seemed very surprised, and ever since then, their tone concerning remakes or HD overhauls has been less black-and-white and more open to interpretation. Furthermore, Sega has acknowledged that fans of their old classics still exist, and still play games. It's why we're getting Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. FFXIII sold plenty well enough and S-E has a promising lineup, but the outcry from long-time lovers - those who adored Squaresoft - is starting to intensify. Whether they choose to acknowledge it or not, this rising swell of animosity can't really be ignored much longer.

They have also given us all the Final Fantasy titles (or most all) on the PlayStation Network and Sony has been keen on asking developers and gamers about the idea of more HD remakes after the God of War Collection. Granted, that usually involves PS2 games but I've heard that PS1 classics are also up for consideration and if that's even remotely accurate, what game would top FFVII on a PlayStation fan's list for a high-definition overhaul? Maybe the original Metal Gear Solid, but that's about it, and that did get a remake on the GameCube, anyway. Look, it's only a matter of time. I swear. FFVII HD will become a reality.

And if it doesn't, I'll buy everyone who reads this article a...um...jelly bean.

A great idea, and since SE said it would take 40 years I think it was, to remake the game with today's graphics, an HD update would be a cost effective solution to having screwed us gamers in the butt for all these years.

Then there is the sales of VII on PSN which went through the roof. I'm gonna call this myth Plausible.

When I had VII for PC I even used the mod to use the higher-def cloud from the Sephiroth fight in every battle. That game looks great on PC :)

Edit: We are talking about a simple HD upgrade and not a full remake right?

My favorites are JellyBelly Tutti Frutti flavor.

I dont think FF7 will be coming back any time soon. SE seems like they have a lot going on with KH3, v13, 14, and god knows what else.
But if FF7 was remade in HD i'd be first in line to preorder it.

MGS1 deserves a remake way more than FFVII does, imo. Even FFVI deserves a next-gen remake more than VII does.

Either way, the game is fine as it is.

Lame. I want voice acting. REAL cutscenes. A better english localization. Better animation in battle. This game defined a small period of my adolescence, and I would love to experience it in a more pleasing manner now that I am a grown man. This is about way more than just how the game LOOKS. If you're a REAL fan of Final Fantasy VII, you'd be excited about a remake.

Although I do agree that FFVI could benefit even more from a remake. I go back and forth with myself on which one I want more...

I'm pretty sure people don't want a remastered PS2 game, but a PS3 game of FFVII.

I'm not hoping too much. I am just praying that the following will show in TGS:

FFX, FFX2, FFXII HD in one blu-ray
MGS series in HD blu-ray
gameplay of The Last Guardian
FFXIII VS footage (doesn't make sense to come out after FFXIV)

From left to right we have;

Mizuho Kazami from Please teacher (it's an over the shoulder from behind when she's wearing her space suit).

Shion Uzuki as seen in a very short scene where the Red Testament and Wilhelm are looking at some imagery which includes Shion. The image of Shion actually looks like it was hand drawn and not a rendered image. I can't remember the exact scene, but some kind Internet person had a screen cap, so I have it now...I seem to remember Shion is seen looking similar to this in another scene, either in Kos-Mos subconsious domain, or in Momo's subconscious.

Of course the blue haired babe on the right is Kos-Mos, again an over-the-shoulder shot.

I stretched and blended the backgrounds from the Kos-Mos and Mizuho Kazami images and made space for Shion, then I layered in Shion so that Kazami and Kos-Mos appear to be in front of her looking in her direction.

Quite a decorative trio with their hair colors and such. My personal favorite is Shion, but then I like the geeky, red haired, damsel in distress. Must be my "Knight in Shining Armor complex" kicking in.

i think i only played one xenosaga game i just dont remember which one. back in the ps2 days i was all about fighting and racing games, also rpgs, but i had to think how i was going to spend my money. because of that, i had to pass on rpgs that i dont know anything about. i bought games where i can play against someone in the same room and then have that "you're my bitch" moments after every, i mean every match. it was fun but then i saw more value in buying games that lag wasnt much of a factor online for the ps3 era. i mean now i have a lot less fighting games because lag completely ruins it. playing soul calibur 4 online just screwed up the genre for me.

I was such a big fan of Xenogears on PS1, that I enjoyed all the similarities in Xenosaga. Even thought there's no direct association, there are similarities. For example, the similarities with Elayham Van Houten fomr Xenogears, the big yellow relic things, and Shion's last name... Uzuki... same as Xenogear's Citan Uzuki! *sigh*

Unrelated... this reminds me, somehow I'm not sure how, that my birthday is the same as Cloud Strife's.... August 19.

We'll they are probably going to have to get a new character designer since Tetsuya Nomura might not want to do it. Seemingly he is very keen on doing a FPS shooter according to a quote from him at E3 I saw on Kotaku.

Aww, Ben. I think your blind optimism is getting everyone down, and not just Arnold. I've said in the past that I think S-E IS working on a remake, but to be honest, the only way we'll see it before the PS4 is if they've been working on it for longer than XIII. I suppose that is possible given the tech demo they showed how long ago, and the length of time it's been taking them to make games recently. That they bought Eidos gives creedence to the idea in having more developers on hand, but to be honest, I don't believe it's happening.

Sure, Sony is offering up HD remakes, but there is a crucial difference between the two companies. Sony legitimately seems to care for us, the fans, while S-E, not so much, just look at what they've said and done so far this generation.

I do not care what Squeenix is doing, and I will not care until they come out and say "Yes, we are making a FFVII remake: it will be out on xx/yy/zzzz."

I am a firm believer in not feeding their publicity machine. I believe that they should be ignored when they bring up the subject until/if they announce it definitively--just like a child throwing a tantrum for attention.

I'd rather have my FFVII HD Remake, I hate Jelly Beans.

Having FFVII remade in Advent Children Complete quality graphics is just a dream come true. Imagine having the full 1080p quality graphics, the choice between Japanese or English Audio (Hell, I don't care if it's just text with no speaking with maybe the exception of some movie scenes maybe) and a few more Materia or even a few added minigames in the Gold Saucer. Hell, just imagine the Gold Saucer all on it's own. I've thought long ago what if they made Final Fantasy: Gold Saucer. Choose between any Final Fantasy character to play as in practically any and every mini game ever given in any Final Fantasy, including that weird puzzle minigame in I think it was the first one, right? You know, the one that

Would be funny if they re-released FFV & FFVI on the 3DS. Then it would be playing 2D Final Fantasies in 3D.

Anyway, of course it inevitable. But that isn't the real question, it's more about how accurate they can be.

As for the new Kojima game, it could be ZOE3 OR...Metal Gear & Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake remake. FOK.

though while on the subject of ps1 classics, i wish sony would assign a first party developer and make there sole job to remaster ps1 and ps2 games for the ps3.
full HD graphics, trophy support.
but retexture the game, redo all the assets dont just upscale the game and chew it out like they did with the GOW collection.
i was disappointed by that i thought it would look a sh*t load better than it did!

I hate em too. Jelly beans = Floor decorations. Who here hasn't seen at least one jelly bean on the floor in the last week?

I also don't see the point, so I'll answer.

If they don't rework the whole thing to make it look like Advent Children (i.e., full high-res 3D models and environments), what's the point of making it a PS3 game? Play the original game.

If they do rework it, it won't remotely be the same game as is was (even if they don't screw it up, as seems likely), which will annoy the fans.

Hell, people bitched about FFXII (not a typo) not being purely turn-based. What'll the s*** storm be like if they change even the slightest aspect of FFVII?

In creative terms, it's a lose-lose situation, though they'd likely sell a ton of copies regardless of whether it's any good.

Well due to the fidelity of that era. hey would need to do some serious work on the intertace, only to have the visuals really not upto par anyway, even with anti-aliasing. going in and reworking textures, big time, maybe even completely replacing models with hd 1's would be a must. The ps3 already upscales ps1 games, and it looks not that great on my 42 inch lcd. I play most of my ps1 games on my psp if i can

Agreed Smokey. PS1 games look decent on the PSP, but blown up on a 40+ inch LCD on the PS3 they look like crap.

Ben, nice to hear that us old school gamers are making a statement towards the new ways and the abandonment of our gen.

I don't want a minor HD update on the PSN. I want a full blown remake. In every possible way. One that combines today's super computer consoles capabilities with out losing the atmosphere of VII's gameplay and story.I know it's risky giving $E current status, but it's worth a try.

SCREW JELLY BEANS I WANT FINAL FANTASY VII... again.

Well I'd really love to believe it's coming. No, I know it's coming.

But: An HD remastering of a PS1/PS2 game will be next to impossible to port to 360.
That means Wada-kun won't get no money from MS which may incline him not to green-light said PS3 HD remastering of a potential multi-million dollar hit.

Guess he should consider the possibility that an HD remake would even shift some PS3s and garner him more money than no remake at all.

Wada should be counting the blessings of the PSN releases of FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX considering how much FFXIII must have cost to make. Even with as many as 5 million copies sold, they would have needed to sell at least 3-4 million just to break even.

FFVII remade in HD for the PS3 is a guaranteed multi, multi-million seller, in all markets. That should appeal, even to Wada.

oh please, you've sen how long it took the ps store to get ff7? then ff8, the ff9. you see how long it took to release ff13. was a picture of ff13 on the 2007 or 2008 ps3 console boxes? can someone please tell me what is the status on ff13 versus, please? and please tell me WHY ARE YOU STARTING THIS RUMOR?

Gotta agree with main on this one (except the model stuff ^^).
TGS will probably bear a much higher impact on PS3 than E3.
E3 was fine this year, no doubt, great show, KB on stage and finally the TM reveal and the rel date of GT5.

Still, I assume TGS will be way bigger in terms of games.
We will certainly see The Last Guardian, FFvXIII and of course Kojima's 'face-melting' PS3 exclusive.
There might be even more, it's TGS after all.

ehhh MGS didn't EXACTLY get a remake on GCN. it was essentially a Director's cut/Port of the first with a different title. SE really doesn't have the time to be messing with a FFVII remake nor is it needed. Sonic 4: Ep 1 is a different story and you really can't compare. that's Sega continuing a series their loyal fans loved and want back but for SE to remake FFVII? that would be SE redoing a part of the FF series because all of the FFVII fanboys think its the best one ever when in reality its the 1st one they played and that it was immediately the best one ever. FFVII was good but not close to say the best ever and deserves a remake? you need to keep in mind, the only ground breaking thing about it is that it was the first one with 3D graphics. that was a HUGE leap from the 8/16-bit era. i could guarantee you that if they put FF I-VI on a disc, and with the same graphical level as those on the PS1(VII-IX) they'd hit the same range in disc space. Yeah so what they put VII-IX on the PSN store? Japan has TONS of PS1 Classics. i honestly don't see a FFVII remake coming at all. SE has their hands full and people need to let go of the past. hell i think V should be redone. it was great. the best FF IMO. SE is making plenty of games right now that'll reel them in some serious money. i honestly really want to know why is their such a want for a remake of FFVII because really their are 8 others to be chosen from and 6 of them deserve to be brought back into the light. they laid the foundation for what is now. so really what makes FFVII so much more deserving of a remake than any other from I-IX.

For me, the original Final Fantasy was the first i played, as i found the cartridge in a local secondhand store. game was awesome, needed auto-target, but was still awesome. then i played ffII (IVjap), wrecked it, an was a little less impressed... bought a copy of FFVII. This is a game that almost every FF fan has played, and absolutely loved it to death... whether it was their first or not... there are numerous petitions online for a remake, but if SE would dare make one, they would have to be REALLY careful about the battle engine... i mean, would be sick to have it set up like the good old days, but it woud be HORRIBLE if they set it up to run like, for example... FFXII. personally, i just want a remaster... with flowing CGI and extra materia. would be done a lot quicker than a remake, and if they do it right, would absolutely make everyone on this page sh** their pants, even if they wanted a full remake.
Now, i guarantee that if they do make a full remake, that every executive of SE could retire, without a care in the world. We, as the gamers, would be ecstatic to the point that we would need a rag to clean up the bodily mess made when seeing the first mako reactor blow up, much like everyone at E3 did when they released the remastered intro. i know a collaboration of this game will be released. It's just a matter of when, and how it will be done.

Alright man I want my free jellybean. No, but on a serious note, I think that Final Fantasy VII is one of the greatest games ever created. If I were to grade it on a scale of one to ten I would give it a 9, with the only point taken off because of the graphics. This game changed gaming the way we know it. It made so much money for Sony, for SE, and, in my opinion, made the Playstation as popular as it is. Anyone who says this game should not be remade is out of their minds. The only thing that would scare me with a remake is that they would change it too much. This game, storyline wise, and battle system wise, can NOT be touched. It has to stay the same. It's what we grew up with. I even want the same old battle system with the little bars and all. I just would love to see the graphics in HD and modernized. SE is scared to make this game themselves, because they know if it fails it will be horrible for them. They will have wasted all that time and money on something that every true fan hated. Just look at Dragonball the movie, in my opinion a terrible movie. I know that's on a whole new playing field but they changed the story too much, and everyone hated it. If that happens with FFVII, it will be tragic. My views on if it will be made are cloudy. I can't say either way, because there's been too much spin on the issue. So who knows. But I know that I for one would be the first in line to buy FFVII if it is remade. Even though I don't have a PS3 and don't have room for it right now, I'd still buy the game and wait until I was able to have a PS3. SE, I know you don't have to listen to your fans, but PLEASE listen to your customers. We are the reason you have become one of the most famous gaming developers out there, do it for us.
