Ben's Week In Review: August 15
Getting ready to do a bunch of reviews this week. In the meantime, trying to savor Alan Wake before finishing.
Geez...what's with all the new game announcements?
There were quite a few this past week, but by far my favorite was the one for Bioshock Infinite. I loved both of the first two; people can whine about the story in the sequel but it was still pretty damn good, and I think they refined and expanded the gameplay a bit, too. Then there was Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, and although I'm not really a flight guy, that debut trailer was pretty awesome. I'll definitely have to try it. As for Call of Duty 8, the only reason I'm mildly curious is because it's an entirely new developer and they're claiming it's a new approach (i.e., an "adventure/FPS"). But it's not exactly topping my most-anticipated list right now. DanceDanceRevolution PS3? Ehhhh... Not my thing. The very idea that a demo for Duke Nukem Forever might drop in a few months time is almost too mind-boggling...the game that essentially defined "vaporware" is actually going to arrive?
Hard to believe. But it'll be interesting to see the result. As for other FPSs that might be somewhat original and - at the very least - extremely polished, you should consider Rage. Won't be around for a while, but it could be very cool. And don't forget Crysis 2, which is now set for March. I still want Dragon Age II more in that month, but hey, Crytek talks a lot of smack, you know? Let's see if they can back it up.
Insomniac, it better be Resistance 3...
There's a very good chance that we could finally see Insomniac's new project this week; they've been hinting that the announcement is right around the corner. I really don't think Resistance 2 got anywhere near enough love from PS3 owners, but maybe that's because it was overshadowed by Killzone 2, which launched only about five months later. I'm a big fan of the Resistance games and as good as they are, I don't really play the Ratchet & Clank titles, so this mystery game better be the third Resistance. There's so much left to that story! There's just so much more they can do, although they may be frightened by the sheer number of potentially fantastic FPSs scheduled to hit the market in the next 6 months. Maybe they feel they can't compete, or something. But I couldn't possibly have more faith in this particular developer, and no matter what they're making, I'll be interested.
Personal gaming update
Like I said, I'm waiting to finish Alan Wake because I really don't have anything I want to play until Halo: Reach about a month from now. I do have a lot of games to play for reviews, though; for August, look for Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, Mafia II, Top Gun, Cladun: This is an RPG, and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. Then there's Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2 in the first week of September. After that, there's a small break before everything explodes in October, as usual. Above all else, I'm probably most psyched for Gran Turismo 5, although I'm really looking forward to Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Medal of Honor, Vanquish, and LittleBigPlanet 2. Next year is gonna be huge, too; I just loved that gameplay trailer for Deus Ex: Human Revolution...that game is gonna be bad-ass.
Not much else to report. Oh, we'll be looking at Move titles for the launch next month. I still have my reservations, but we'll see...

The New Bioshock looks good but I think I can wait till it's cheap. Right now I'm playing God of War collection and I'm stuck dead in the first game on the timed trap where you pull the handle to release the Kraken... ahem I mean release the gate that exposes a box. And if you don't kick the box across the room in 2 seconds and get it around the corner the spikes come up and kill you. Problem is, even when I get the box in place and jump on it, even a double jump doesn't get me up to the ledge. Help?

Currently, I am interested in, "F1 2010" and "Mafia II", which I will be getting at the end of these up coming months respectively....
I am not at all interested in the CoD's. I won't purchase another shooter until "KZ3" drops. "Bioshock Infinite" will probably be a second hand job much later on.I never played the former 2 Bioshocks so I can't judge how good they are. The demo of the first one did give me an idea initially... but it didn't spark enough of an interest to get me to purchase those titles.
"Little Big Planet 2", is not high on priority list this time. Didn't really enjoy the first one that much, haven't played in months. I should probably give it a whirl and see what user generated content has been created for it... it is a mixed bag I guess...
I am also looking forward to "Trine 2" next year. "Crysis 2", probably not. I think "Killzone 3" will be technically superior being an exclusive. Must admit too, "MAG", "GoWII" and "Heavy Rain" are tempting me, but waiting for a price drop :)
Looking at moving to New Zealand sometime next year, so I guess I will only be looking at getting into the 3D visuals once settled in my new country with a job. Lets hope all goes smoothly...
Must admit; "L.A. Noire", "Infamous 2", "Resistance 3" (when announced), "GT5", "The Last Guardian", "Rage" and hopefully "Demon Souls 2" (which I will duly get if released - with glitches etc fixed up)... are all good upcoming buys... not forgetting "Dirt3" and probably, a very much updated "F1 2011" with 24 car online play...
Let us hope their release dates are sensibly staggered though for financial reasons...

And yes, Crytek has talked up their Crysis 2 game a lot. My skepticism is somewhat held off because it seems that teams who both write their own engines and develop their own games tend to produce decent stuff. Seeing that Crytek is trying to publicize their new CryEngine I expect Crysis 3 to be a showcase title.
I've played the first two Resistance games and I'm also eager and expect it to be shown this next week.
While there was a lot to like about Resistance 2 (some of the best dang FPS guns) could've been a lot more than it was if the team gave it some more TLC.
Levels were pretty hit and miss with me. Some levels like the Chicago plaza firefight were down right amazing. I was hoping to see a lot more of that kind of action. Insomniac has an engine that can really push a lot of objects around and that Chicago firefight experience really stood out for me. I would've loved to see a lot more of such insane action.
Whereas other segments of the game felt sort of rough and unfinished. The Utah desert level desperately cried for some real global HDR that nearly every game this gen has. And while I dig boss fights, a few of the boss battles felt a bit weak. Didn't that flying-bug boss seem unfinished? And for how awesome that huge goliath-juggernaught boss was, the battle felt less like a boss fight and closer to a scripted QTE event. Still, an awesome experience, either way, but I was expecting more of a fight from a gigantic awesome looking boss.
Seeing how well Insomniac handled their last R&C, I have faith that R3 will be the best in the series.

Insomniacs newest project, I'd love for it to be Resistance 3, but I'm leaning towards thinking it'll be the official unveiling of the multiplatform game, which I'll be disappointed at. Not the game, Insomniac is like Naughty Dog, they can do no wrong, but the fact it's multiplatform. My fingers are crossed for R3 though, and I also have to get ACiT soon too, it's Platinum so when I see it, I'll grab it.
Personal Update:
Still reading through Cholera at a very slow pace.
Still trying to finish this chapter, and really bored with it. It just keeps needing more with the more I write of it. Annoying.
Had a real bad case of vertigo last Saturday through Tuesday, still can't work out the cause. Because of that I only worked two days this past week.
And have moved fulltime onto FFXIII after completing Valkyria Chronicles and posting my review. I've put all together too much time into it, but I'm liking it more than I had expected to. That's about it, I think.
Peace.

Bioshock infinite looks awesome (can't wait for game-play) and I totally forgot about move until it was mentioned here for some reason. Which is especially weird as I do plan on getting it. As for my personal gaming update, getting back into MAG a bit seems like the upgrades rather improved the game. Rediscovering it I guess would be a good way to put it. Nearing the end of FFXIII (story wise) finally.. and Bioshock2 is just about to make it's way up to the daily play list after my second run through of GTAIV.

Why? I'm reading War and Peace. I'm on Volume 2 (of 3) but even so, it'll take a while to finish so there won't be much in the way of updates, as I only read one book at a time. :)

I also just finished Wolf Island by Darren Shan.
I realize these are not "impressive" titles that one would bring to a book club, but I am planning to read The Divine Comedy at some point in the future so I can still be proud of that! ;)

1. completed my 2nd playthrough of Dragon Age: Origins! I played as City Elf, Rogue Class, Female Gender. After that, came Awakening of course =P, and in the end, my lovely Lucy ended up being Level 34! I'm going to download the Golems of Amgarrak soon, can't wait (it's also my perfect excuse to dust off my Male Warrior Human Noble ^.^, haven't seen him in a while)!
2. played the occasional Halo 3, MW2, COD:WaW with my brother, along with helping him in DA:O
3. recently got new custom themes and wallpapers for my PS3, am loving them ^.^!
4. learned that my Wii can charge my PS3 controllers when my PS3's off! It was such a huge WTF moment for me lmao! Whether the Wii is on or not it will charge the controllers XD Gone is my pet peeve of my PS3 being unable to charge controllers when it's off, woohoo!
This next week, I'm buying Persona 3:FES and Persona 4 for my good ol PS2, and tomorrow, it shall come down to either The Expendables or The Other Guys. Hmm, which to go for...

If anyone is curious, RotA is a "narrative game" as I like to think of it. The story is solid, the combat is a little weak (but still fun), and the leveling system is really cool, IMO. RotA is probably in the bargain by now and I would recommend the game for it's story.

I'm looking forward to the Resistance 3 announcement. All i would want from it is them to bring back the weapon wheel. I missed that in R2. If it's not R3 then hopefully it'll be something that will pique my interest. I don't mind so much that Insomniac making a new IP multiplat; keeps their people working and we get to enjoy whatever they come up with.
PGU...Beat Bioshock 2 at the beginning of the week and I did like the story, not as good as the first but it was good. Might go through it again to get some trophies that I missed. I've been messing around with the multiplayer and I've been having fun.
I got FEAR 2 a few days ago and I beat it early this morning. I liked it but it was short so I'm glad I got it for cheap.
I just need 3 more Gold Bolts in R&C:ACiT for that trophy, all of them in The Great Clock. God those new paradox challenges are hard, but when you finally get what to do, the sense of satisfaction is awesome. I also need to beat it on hard to get that trophy and I'll have my 7th platinum, yay go team me, lol.
Other than that I'm thinking of moving to Las Vegas. I have a couple of friends who will put me up until I can get my own place. I'm looking at the job market to see if how long it'll take for me to find enployment. So it'll all depend on that. Need a change of location and just a change. Happy gaming people.

On my PS3....
almost finished with "Hero" Cole, got all the shards & all the dead drops.
Just need to go back & finish 10 more out of the the 21 stunt list. Also have just 2 more of those timed satellite up-link missions to finish as Hero.
But...between my repetitive work, my throttling, clutching, and braking my Harley, plus numerous hours of game-playing, my frigging intermittent carpel tunnel in both wrists has been throwing my timing off & I keep missing those 2 missions from anywhere between a 1/2 to 2 seconds. GRRRRRRR!
Anyway, I decided to set inFamous aside for the moment & play a couple of much more docile games till the pain in my wrist subsides again.
So now I'm doing FEAR-1 right now & then going to do Fear-2.
And hopefully once I'm done with the FEAR factory, then I can go back and kamikaze attack everyone in inFamous as "evil SOB " Cole.
On my double-180 bot-box....
I finished Gears 1 recently & will probably pop in Gears 2 while the 1st story is still fresh in my mind.
Also just picked up 2 double games on the 360 for only $8 total brand new ,so I had to snatch them up
Lego:Indiana Jone/ Kung Fu Panda.
Lego:Batman/ Pure.
So I'll have to steal a few hours here & there somewhere too just to give them a taste-test too.

I'm still holding grudge against Namco for making it 360 exclusive.
Personal gaming update:
Done with MGS4, took me 26 hours to complete it and now replaying again to get the stealth camo.
Also doing my best to get the Big Boss Emblem, and I wanna ask, has anyone here on PSXE got the Big Boss Emblem?
It really sounds nearly nearly impossible.

Some part were frustrating, like in Act 1, suddenly a PMC soldier popped out from a corner and spotted me.
It's only a matter of time before my frustration explodes.
The Boss Extreme? No kill? No alert? No continue? No use of healing items or special items? All that under 5 hours?
I'll worship whoever got the Big Boss Emblem because you have to be a gaming god to get it.

as much as i enjoy resistance i hope its a new IP or even better R&C related!
i read a article today suggesting exactly that, but i have my doubts because insomniac did say ACIT would be the last R&C game for a while.
i really hope it is R&C, by far my favorite series of all time!
on a side note, finished K&L2 today and, well.
i thought it was impossible for this game to disappoint me, because my expectations were so low.
well i was proved wrong!
crap game, and not even 6 hours long!

Frigging bad graphics, bad story, way over the top in cheesy dialog, and the worst game for foul mouthed cursing in every sentence that came out of Marchinko's mouth.
I have to say that in all my years of gaming, I have NEVER played a game that way even came 1/2 as bad as Rouge Warrior sucked.
And if I didn't need it just for collection purposes, I'd 86 it so it can't stink up & infect the other 69 games in my PS3 collection.

there the publishers, they could of said no its not good enough go back and fix it, but as if they care!
"Frigging bad graphics, bad story, way over the top in cheesy dialog, and the worst game for foul mouthed cursing in every sentence that came out of Marchinko's mouth."
huh?
sounds exactly like K&L2!
OK, maybe im being a little harsh, maybe its not as bad as rouge warrior but its still pretty bad.
best part about the game is the level design.
most games, KZ2 for example have you in a small area, taking cover in front of enemies not giving you much opportunities to flank them or gain a environmental advantage.
K&L2 is quite the opposite, every single level has several rooms, and other ways you can eliminate the enemy.
the level from the demo for example, you can stay on the streets, go into many of the open stores, or climb the stairs and traverse the balconies.
i only WISH KZ2 was that open!
but thats about the best thing about it.
besides the poor graphics, hit detection issues, and control issues the AI is really crap!
for example theres a level where your in a TV store, as i exited and walked onto the street 15 cops came storming in.
now, common sense for them to do would be shoot me because 15 V 1 well i think i know whos going to win!
so what did they do?
every single one ran for cover!
it looks like the AI is not dynamic, its all preset so once the code triggers they go to a preset area and go from there.
enemies dont take advantages they should, allot of times id be out of ammo, or low on health, or at a tactical disadvantage and all the enemies just sit in cover.
also at times enemies would be staring at me like stunned mullets!
a enemy would be facing me, and frozen he would not snap out of his trance till i started shooting him.
im sorry, but K&L2 is one of the buggiest games i have ever played!
its almost like a 8 year old with 2 weeks VB experience coded it!

Been playing Red Dead Redemption this week. Having a good time with it. Love the atmosphere, and the characters are excellent as well. I accidentally shot a good person last night and then looted the body - Marsten says "Murdered and robbed in the same day, sorry about that." Or something like that LOL.

so im not that interested in anything but Bioshock. i need to catch up on the first two.
as with assasins creed... but i suppose i'll have to rent borrow those with so many games already on my radar. and i still wanna get wipeout fury. need to get that... yeah.
and talking of things i need to catch up on.. resistance! it is a shame but i lead a fairly busy life.... and dont exactly have tonnes to spend on games so resistance kind of dropped off.

personal gaming update: not a whole lot. i have been going through quite a lot. i am moving in the next month again. monday i must have picked something up wrong and pinched a nerve cuz i spent that night, all of tuesday and wed morning in bed on a heating pad couldnt even walk. then wed i decided i could not take it any more and went to my buddies to go on a boat with him. 2 hours after i left my mom calls saying my ex showed up at our house with her second kid and it had eaten some kind of pill. my kid was with us so she was safe. turns out the pill was like methadone or something and im finding out that my kids mother has been doing heroine on the weekends when i have my kid. now DCFS is involved and i have to keep my kid until they decide what is going on. this has been a stressful week and as much as i have wanted to do some gaming i have had much larger issues keeping me from my ps3. when i did use my ps3 it was to use it for video confrencing so i could tell multiple people at once what is going on with my kid.

To save some money, I've decided not to buy games at release any more. I've missed so many games I can buy games for $20 or less and enjoy them just as much as a $60 game. So while I may be playing the latest and greatest, it won't be until most ppl haven't played them in a long time, but it'll save me some money and it actually means I'll get to play more games.
There are a lot of games I'm looking forward to, but I'll be playing the waiting game. At least my wallet is good for learning patience even if it isn't good for much else. lol.

Bunch of FPSs...., how exciting!!!
And I'm bitter at Namco's retarded ways, so don't really care 'bout Ace Combat.
Same with Imsoniac, they can make whatever they want, I'm looking forward to Killzone3. Guerilla seems 100% sure of themselves are pushing that game extremely hard, can't wait! Yes, it's an FPS, but not at the very least, it's very unique (they should keep the weighty controls...). Morever, any game that uses the CELL processor like Killzone does is a win in my book.
Currently playing inFamous again, wow...
Original Cole is the best Cole, c'mon Sucker Punch don't make him Nathan Drake hybrid :(
