This PS3 Fan Says: Play Halo: Reach
We've got all sorts of gamers here at PSXE; it's part of what makes our community so great. There's a larger than usual RPG contingent, there are those who just can't handle shooters (who often clash with those who bravely defend the genre), and of course, there are multiplatform owners of all ages.
Many asked what I thought of Alan Wake and a few even wanted a review. Well, we can't really do that - our format is pretty clear - but I often said how much I appreciated Alan Wake, and in retrospect, I should've done an article like this.
As I've often said, exclusives are where it's at, regardless of platform. I will say the PS3 exclusive lineup is the best and most diverse but I keep my Xbox 360 for one reason- exclusives. One of them is Halo. I've played and completed every entry, including last year's ODST but I've often been vocal about my skepticism concerning Reach. The reason is because the last few Halo games sort of failed to impress in my eyes, and with the competition going sky-high this generation, the franchise felt like it was lagging behind. I really didn't think Halo 3 was all all that special; it was a great game but, well...it was forgettable to me. That's why I brought home the latest Bungie effort with a few reservations but thankfully, I needn't have worried.
The pacing and variety is what makes it so entertaining. You'll embark on a quiet mission at night with a sniper rifle, operate any number of vehicles within the first few hours, get all tense when battling marauding suicide bombers in tight quarters, toy around with the all-new armor power-ups (Hologram was an early favorite of mine), do a wee bit of battling in zero grav, and even fly a true-blue spaceship for a while. The execution is about as fluid and reliable as one could hope for, and enemy AI is better than ever. The only downside I can see is the ally AI, especially when it comes to vehicles...in the latter respect, your friends are downright awful. But hey, I'd rather do most things myself, anyway, and the allies are indeed more helpful in a straight-up firefight.
I'm not even the biggest FPS fan in the world, but I do like the great ones. Halo: Reach looks great, sounds great, and plays great. Killzone 3 will have to really step up if it wants to reclaim the FPS crown - which I believe KZ2 took back in early 2009 - and although I have confidence in Guerrilla, Bungie has done a bang-up job. Because I tend to appreciate more original, cerebral games these days, I still say Alan Wake is my favorite 360 exclusive, but Reach has made my happy. Oh, and I haven't even sampled the online yet, which I hear is incredible. :)

I tried Halo: Evolved a long time ago, got bored after 15 minutes. I also tried Halo 2 for PC a while back, but it was just horrible. Even for being an old game, it had really lousy graphics, felt really boring and incredibly "kiddie-based" with the floaty gameplay, lame weapons and monsters, it simply felt like a really, really old-gen shooter, much older than it actually is. Since Halo 3 and later isn't out for PC I never tried them, and I seriously have NO intention to whatsoever either...
So unless Reach really is 100 times better than previous games, I don't really see how it's so good, as the same thing was said about the earlier games in the series. And looking at the IGN review, even in the latest Reach the graphics doesn't seem very good at all, but I guess I'm WAYY too spoiled with games like Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 and God of War III....

As for the other question, I'm not sure. Reach is still distinctly Halo...if it was the setting or style you didn't like, you probably won't like this one. But if it was more about a lack of variety and overall "oomph," maybe you should try it.

It's not that I'm anti-Xbox either. I loved Gears of War and at least the first Fable (never tried 2). I'd like to play Mass Effect (no longer an exclusive). Halo has simply never interested me. To me, it's always felt bland and simple, just with really polished graphics.

you can say that the PS3 has a ton of games to play (myself included) but, the xbox does have some exclusive games that are worth playing too... i've always been a PS3 gamer but, the xbox does have games... i bought the gamecube just to play metroid, zelda, and harvest moon... i hope to someday buy a 360 just to play some of these games i never got the chance to...
seems like the time might be right in the near future to check out the other side someday... halo 2 and 3 were not quite my thing, i've played them at friend's houses... but, i am down for some of the other exclusive offerings...

Halo Reach has many scenes (not including the space fights) have empty terrains, which makes the graphics look dated.

Anyways I have way to many PS3 games going on right now, and in the immediate future.
I did hear a few of kids on my soccer team I coach talking about it though. They were all mentioning the bunny hop play type, and that was just another nail in the coffin for me.

Unfortunately, you won't change that. The only good news is that to actually be a journalist anywhere - this industry included, for the most part - you need qualifications. ...random bloggers don't count. And they know they don't count, and it pisses them off.
To which I have to reply: "awwwwww......"

I know this site has a number of really great writers... people who are well-spoken and well-educated. They know their games well, and if they wrote an essay, they might be able to get consistent A's and B's in university!
I feel that I have at least SOME writing talent, but I definitely don't consider myself qualified to be a game journalist. There are so many aspects you need to have a good grasp on, and you need to be able to write honestly and efficiently in a way that is fair to what it truly is.
I think most of us can tell which writers or bloggers are well-educated in this type of field, and which ones are basically just self-centred wind-bags.

But I don't have an xbox or a 360 and I'm not going to buy one for these games. Since no one I know has a 360 now, I kinda did the unthinkable..... I youtubed the ending to Reach (since we already know what was going to happen). It was actually pretty cool.
Ben, wanna loan me your 360 and your copy of Reach??

It really is quite incredible how far they've pushed the 360's hardware visually. I still cant say it's better than something like Uncharted 2 or GoW3 overall, but it definitely can hang with the best in class crowd.

Halo 3 was more to my liking though. And I'll buy Reach, but MS isn't getting a pennie of my gaming money, so that leaves buying it used late next year once it's dropped to my price-point of $20.

How many people out there could stream an uncompressed 1080p video and lossless audio without any buffering? Not many I would bet. And if it is compressed then its not Blu-Ray quality.
Typical MS bull, trying to undermind the competition. Same with Apple and them wanting you to buy ALL your content from the itunes store.

I really don't understand what these reviewers are looking for in platform games. They probably can't stand the fact that you can't use the camera and walk around in first-person.

The 360 requires too much money for me to get involved with unfortunately. With online subscription fees, repeat console purchases and fire insurance, there would be no money left for games.

i dunno what it is but i really dont enjoy the series much, its missing something that X factor that turns a good game into a fantastic one.
everythings there, the only fault i had with the game was the AI but besides that everythings well done.
maybe M$ should change the series up a little, to keep it fresh and try to get in some new fans.
i dunno, as it is its certainly a good game but its definitely the 9s+ people would have you believe.
got rid of my 360 today anyway since the next 360 game i want is gears 3 so theres really no point keeping the thing for 8 months just sitting there collecting dust.

I personally can't say if it deserves it or not, because the only FPS games I've played in the past few years are Killzone 2, Bioshock 1 & 2 and R1 & 2. So I've missed out on a lot of them.
But really, I don't think I've really read any article anywhere else but here that thinks KZ2 holds that title, maybe it was mentioned in some of the reviews (which I think I recall) but that was a while back, I'm not sure it still holds it.
I have about 15 people on my friend's list and I don't think I've seen anyone play it in about 8 months or so.
I can't wait for KZ3 though.

My synopsis of KZ2:
Pros:
::Great graphics (it's highest achievement)
::Fresh spin on FPS genre in regards to semi-sim/action FPS (interesting weighty controls)
::Great animation. MW is the only game that challenges it in this department. I remember how impressed I was by MW the first time I saw it in action. I'd say these two are about equal here.
::Online play was solid in KZ2 but definitely not as robust in general modes of play compared to the already infinite amount online shooters on the market:TF2, Halo, CoD, L4D etc. It was interesting to have the carrosel of game modes shift from objective to objective.
Cons: Lack of weaponry. THe game borders sci-fi and more modernized industrial military design. It allows for more freedom than CoD but it isn't nearly as interesting as Resistance or Halo in weaponry. Seriously, Resistance and Halo does SO MUCH MORE in this department.
:: The story is okay, but the characterization did very little to draw me close to the characters. When your comrade died, was it Rico?, it really did nothing for me. A missed attempt at trying to create emotion. Half Life 2 and Halo have both topped it in this category... especially HL2
:: No one does vehicular integration better than Bungie. Valve also did quite well with HL2. A whole layer of depth gets integrated into battle that is nearly absent from KZ2 altogether. The tank battle was okay, but we've been there done that with more meaning in past CoD games. That little robot arcade segment was nice, but way too linear in implementation and totally forgettable.
::Lack of enemy types. Turn on HL2, Resistance, and Halo and you'll encounter what seems like double the amount of enemy types.
:: Horrendous co-op AI. Not that other FPS games have done so much better in this category. But I can say I've gotten more frustrated with KZ2's partner AI than from any other FPS game.
I could go on, but I'm out of time and really I don't care too much now. Running through this list totally reaffirms that KZ2 was nice, and worthwhile. But not a standard setter in any way other than graphics. Which even then, several games have better texturing (I'm not going to go there )

Morne, it is hard to grasp for some, these are the people who actually would jump off a bridge if all their friends were doing it. They are the reason such mediocrity pervades most forms of entertainment. "If everyone likes it, it must good."

I do see a lot of parallels at play between CoD and KZ. I can liken it's play to CoD more so than to Halo, Resistance, and HL2. I will say that if MW2 had only a longer single player game I'd take it over KZ2. What was there in MW2 was sometimes really exhilarating and nearly shocking. The game really made an impression on me with how they integrated residential areas and iconic modern US settings into a war zone. Not to mention the wonderfully smooth 60fps play. There's also some nice tactical depth when it comes to shooting through walls, and going prone.
I'm really at odds with Ben when he claims no CoD can touch KZ2, because outside of it's short length MW2 can.

They might of got inspiration from the characters from Jin Roh, but the characters could also got influenced by Nazi Germany to make the story seem believable. It could either be from Jin Roh or based some of the stuff on Nazi Germany.

I don't want to sound so hard on KZ2. I actually really like the game a lot more than what it would seem with all of my negative lashing out. I just have a pet peeve when I detect bias or slant or anything that tarnishes truth. It brings out the beast within. grrr!
Anyhow, I'm really stoked for KZ3. For me, it's one of next year's most anticipated and it'll probably be a game I get at full price! =)

<<<<speaking of being MAJORLY influenced>>>>>>
Actually, the influence goes back longer than that, back to at least 1987, where Jin Roh had got it's own influence.
FYI, on the the front cover art copies of my 2 Mamoru Oshii films(BTW, mine has different cover art than Wikipedia shows theirs as), "The Red Spectacles" & "Stray Dog:Kerberos Panzer Cops" both show the original "red eyes" we now know as Heghast. And the Jin Roh version is a carbon copy of the red-eye on the cover of my own "Red Spectacles" copy.
And it's almost the same for Stray Dog, with 2 exceptions, one being slightly different breathing respirators on their face-plates, and secondly, a more simpler generic(uglier), armor design.

Am I assuming too much? I dunno.
I know I've been tempted before to fill the vacant hole of satisfaction that others have that I do not with scorn. I was drawing more from emotional intelligence on this one. Whether it's truly accurate, or not, I don't know. But I will say, in my time, and dealings and experiences with people, I'm pretty accurately perceptive on such things.

The only thing that got my interest on the 360 is Bioshock, but since that's on the PS3, i don't see any reason why to shell out some money for a 360.
Nothing right now seems to interest me as of yet, I'm waiting for something to come that will. Then i will get one.
So far right now the PS3 has what i need and to fill my thirst for what ever i need in any genre.
I like my shooters and all, but i like variety when I'm in different moods. I'm sure others are in the same boat as me, and some might not be.

But Ben, I am going to have to disagree. I bought a crapbox to try out Alan Wake and I was ultimately disappointed. The game wasn't bad but I just kept waiting to get immersed, to be impressed and it never happened. The backdrops were stunning but the facial animations, character models, they were beyond awful for 5 years of development. And collecting Coffee Thermoses? Seriously? I really liked both Max Payne's but come on Remedy. Bad Form. Halo Reach may be the best for last, but it really isn't anything to write home about. If anyone is a fan that is fine, and keeping an open mind I completely agree with but I will utilize my Open Mindedness all different genres of games.

I agree wholeheartedly Ben. Killzone 2 has its work cut out for it. Online infrastructure is very important this time around.

Off topic: Would someone tell me, if they could be so kind, what's so great about Killzone 2? I've played it through almost twice -- first time right up to Radic, the second time all the way through -- and either I'm missing some integral piece to the puzzle or... O_o

On a serious note though, I played ODST when I got my 360 a few months ago. I honestly didn't like it, but then again, I find no fun in FPS's.
I guess that people who like FPS's should play this. From what I've seen, it looks really good.
