This PS3 Fan Says: Play Halo: Reach

We've got all sorts of gamers here at PSXE; it's part of what makes our community so great. There's a larger than usual RPG contingent, there are those who just can't handle shooters (who often clash with those who bravely defend the genre), and of course, there are multiplatform owners of all ages.

Many asked what I thought of Alan Wake and a few even wanted a review. Well, we can't really do that - our format is pretty clear - but I often said how much I appreciated Alan Wake, and in retrospect, I should've done an article like this.

As I've often said, exclusives are where it's at, regardless of platform. I will say the PS3 exclusive lineup is the best and most diverse but I keep my Xbox 360 for one reason- exclusives. One of them is Halo. I've played and completed every entry, including last year's ODST but I've often been vocal about my skepticism concerning Reach. The reason is because the last few Halo games sort of failed to impress in my eyes, and with the competition going sky-high this generation, the franchise felt like it was lagging behind. I really didn't think Halo 3 was all all that special; it was a great game but, well...it was forgettable to me. That's why I brought home the latest Bungie effort with a few reservations but thankfully, I needn't have worried.

The pacing and variety is what makes it so entertaining. You'll embark on a quiet mission at night with a sniper rifle, operate any number of vehicles within the first few hours, get all tense when battling marauding suicide bombers in tight quarters, toy around with the all-new armor power-ups (Hologram was an early favorite of mine), do a wee bit of battling in zero grav, and even fly a true-blue spaceship for a while. The execution is about as fluid and reliable as one could hope for, and enemy AI is better than ever. The only downside I can see is the ally AI, especially when it comes to vehicles...in the latter respect, your friends are downright awful. But hey, I'd rather do most things myself, anyway, and the allies are indeed more helpful in a straight-up firefight.

I'm not even the biggest FPS fan in the world, but I do like the great ones. Halo: Reach looks great, sounds great, and plays great. Killzone 3 will have to really step up if it wants to reclaim the FPS crown - which I believe KZ2 took back in early 2009 - and although I have confidence in Guerrilla, Bungie has done a bang-up job. Because I tend to appreciate more original, cerebral games these days, I still say Alan Wake is my favorite 360 exclusive, but Reach has made my happy. Oh, and I haven't even sampled the online yet, which I hear is incredible. :)

I'm glad people enjoy it, but my roommates 360 Red Ringed, and I'm not about to go throwing MS cash for 1 game. Maybe if it ever releases on PC. ;)

I have never understood the fascination some people have with Halo, and it has nothing to do with ps3 vs xbox or anything like that.

I tried Halo: Evolved a long time ago, got bored after 15 minutes. I also tried Halo 2 for PC a while back, but it was just horrible. Even for being an old game, it had really lousy graphics, felt really boring and incredibly "kiddie-based" with the floaty gameplay, lame weapons and monsters, it simply felt like a really, really old-gen shooter, much older than it actually is. Since Halo 3 and later isn't out for PC I never tried them, and I seriously have NO intention to whatsoever either...

So unless Reach really is 100 times better than previous games, I don't really see how it's so good, as the same thing was said about the earlier games in the series. And looking at the IGN review, even in the latest Reach the graphics doesn't seem very good at all, but I guess I'm WAYY too spoiled with games like Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 and God of War III....

Would you still recommend it to someone who's never liked Halo to begin with? Something about that series just never interested me. Played the first, thought "meh." Played 2, thought "better but still not fun for me." Played 3, thought "same as 2." Haven't played anything Halo since 3. Would this change my mind?

I would never recommend buying a system for only one game. ...well, maybe if it was Uncharted 2.

As for the other question, I'm not sure. Reach is still distinctly Halo...if it was the setting or style you didn't like, you probably won't like this one. But if it was more about a lack of variety and overall "oomph," maybe you should try it.

Honestly, I don't know what it was. Just never got hooked. Perhaps it was the setting. I'm not much into heavily sci-fi kinda games, but that's not to say I don't enjoy any. I've loved the Resistance games so far, which in my opinion, is the PS3 equivalent to Halo.

It's not that I'm anti-Xbox either. I loved Gears of War and at least the first Fable (never tried 2). I'd like to play Mass Effect (no longer an exclusive). Halo has simply never interested me. To me, it's always felt bland and simple, just with really polished graphics.

exactly bugz... i mean come on, of course i got a PS3, that's why i am seen here every now and then... but i have only owned a PS3 this gen... i thought about one day being able to play some of these exclusive xbox games like left 4 dead, gears of war, and even alan wake... the fable series and even mass effect (we are finally getting that last one tho)...

you can say that the PS3 has a ton of games to play (myself included) but, the xbox does have some exclusive games that are worth playing too... i've always been a PS3 gamer but, the xbox does have games... i bought the gamecube just to play metroid, zelda, and harvest moon... i hope to someday buy a 360 just to play some of these games i never got the chance to...

seems like the time might be right in the near future to check out the other side someday... halo 2 and 3 were not quite my thing, i've played them at friend's houses... but, i am down for some of the other exclusive offerings...

Fact of the matter is that we are all somewhat biased towards a specific system. However, it shouldn't mean that we should not be open-minded towards other games regardless what system it is based on. Yes, Ps3 has a copious amount of exclusives- good exclusives, but it shouldn't mean that games like Alan Wake, Halo, or Gears shouldn't get the attention from Ps3 or even Wii supporters as it gets from 360 supporters. Halo reach is a good game, and shouldn’t be ignored because we prefer the Ps3 or the Wii. The same goes with the Ps3 and the Wii…. Didn't Kevin Butler give a speech about this on E3?

I "gave up" pc gaming. But Starcraft, Team Fortress 2 and a couple others brought me back a little bit. I don't care about Halo. As far as I'm concerned Halo is one of those games I play when I go over to a friends house and we have a lot of people wanting to play a easily picked up game. I have no interest in the story line of halo let alone enough to buy a 360. If at some point I play it at a friends house that's ok, but I'm not going out of my way to pick it up.

It's probably because I can't stand the Xbox's controller. Halo sucks in my eyes, and since Microsoft owns em, well they suck too always has and most likely always will.

I would rather look into Crysis and Rage. That's just me. I believe that whatever Bungie is working on will focus on Xbox first, since that's what they've worked on for so long. Crysis and Rage really pushes all platforms.

Halo Reach has many scenes (not including the space fights) have empty terrains, which makes the graphics look dated.

Meh Halo never did it for me. I felt it was just a lot of hype amongst people. I got about 3/4 of the way through the 1st one and just got bored. However multiplayer was always fun. One of the last games I played versus, split screen style.

To me though, people (uneducated x-box fanboys)like Halo because they are told to like Halo. There have been better FPS IMO.

Dare I say Call of Duty is a better FPS than Halo? I enjoyed Call of Duty games more than Halo. The only reason I liked the first one so much was because it was like a gradutation for my friends and I from Golden Eye. But after that, I got distracted with my GameCube the rest of last gen. I gave Halo a try again when I used to have a 360, never finished it. Never player online because I never signed up for LIVE.

I personally think Halo was a smash hit because of Microsoft's advertisements. The amount of money and attention that Halo series are getting are undefeatable. Amazon gave out $20 giftcards even a week after Halo Reach is released.

I think Halo is a 3 million seller game in real life, but Microsoft "made" it into a 10 million seller.

There's no doubt Halo is as big as it is because of Microsoft promotion. There's also no doubt that plenty of followers blindly ignore most other FPSs. Lastly, I also believe there have been better FPSs, Killzone 2 included.

That being said, I DO acknowledge all that and I'm still more than ready to defend Reach's quality. That should say something.

Every hardcore hostile gamer with a superiority complex and a blog believes he could be a game journalist; that it takes no talent or effort whatsoever, and that he knows more than anybody who does it, anyway.

Unfortunately, you won't change that. The only good news is that to actually be a journalist anywhere - this industry included, for the most part - you need qualifications. ...random bloggers don't count. And they know they don't count, and it pisses them off.

To which I have to reply: "awwwwww......"

No doubt, Ben! There are some sites that count, that even they have questionable talent.

I know this site has a number of really great writers... people who are well-spoken and well-educated. They know their games well, and if they wrote an essay, they might be able to get consistent A's and B's in university!

I feel that I have at least SOME writing talent, but I definitely don't consider myself qualified to be a game journalist. There are so many aspects you need to have a good grasp on, and you need to be able to write honestly and efficiently in a way that is fair to what it truly is.

I think most of us can tell which writers or bloggers are well-educated in this type of field, and which ones are basically just self-centred wind-bags.

I would definitely play Reach if I had a 360. I've played all the core Halo games (1,2,3) and enjoyed them (although the first Halo was highly repetitive with their level design. I feel that they got better with each one.

But I don't have an xbox or a 360 and I'm not going to buy one for these games. Since no one I know has a 360 now, I kinda did the unthinkable..... I youtubed the ending to Reach (since we already know what was going to happen). It was actually pretty cool.

Halo 3 in my eyes is garbage, both the single player and multiplayer are overated. Reach on the other hand is not like Halo 3, I liked the campaign, and the multiplayer should last a good while. Halo 3's campaign had one of the worst levels I have ever played in a videogame, and its multiplayer quickly got old. I don't really know how to explain it but Reach is different, its just... fun.

Sounds good, but still not enough to warrant a 360 purchase for me... especially not after I just bought a 50" TV. The closest any 360 exclusive has come to doing that so far is Alan Wake, followed closely by Gears. If I ever do pick one up, Reach will go onto my list.
Peace.

Yes, Halo Reach was fantastic; it really exceeded my expectations. I've already played it through once and have now nearly completed it on Heroic. I've also spent a lot of time online with it.

It really is quite incredible how far they've pushed the 360's hardware visually. I still cant say it's better than something like Uncharted 2 or GoW3 overall, but it definitely can hang with the best in class crowd.

Great job Bungie. Reach is my fav FPS. Come on Guerilla show them what you got with KZ3!

I dont own an Xbox, but since reach came out my friends have been continuously asking about when i'll pick one up. I may have to get one for this and to try the first mass effect and alan wake... till KZ3 comes out at least lol

For the record, and as I said in a previous reply to a comment, I usually don't recommend buying any console for only one game. So if you don't own a 360, I'm not saying "go buy one just for Reach."

But if you've been considering a purchase, and you've seen OTHER games you might want to try (Alan Wake, Lost Odyssey, Gears, etc.), Reach could be a clincher.

Halo 3 was more to my liking though. And I'll buy Reach, but MS isn't getting a pennie of my gaming money, so that leaves buying it used late next year once it's dropped to my price-point of $20.

Reach was better than ODST or 3, but it feels really OLD to me. The gameplay feels old, the look is old, and I felt really old in the one deathmatch I played that was apparently against a gang of ten year old KKK members. It will be traded in for Dead Rising 2 on Tuesday!

"people have moved through from DVDs to digital downloads and digital streaming, so we offer full HD 1080p Blu-ray quality streaming instantly, no download, no delay" via the company's Zune service."

How many people out there could stream an uncompressed 1080p video and lossless audio without any buffering? Not many I would bet. And if it is compressed then its not Blu-Ray quality.

Typical MS bull, trying to undermind the competition. Same with Apple and them wanting you to buy ALL your content from the itunes store.

Also, you've made it known that MP isn't your thing. I have a hard time believing someone would buy a Halo game just for the SP. Have you splurged on a Gold membership?

Great to hear that you're enjoying the game, Ben. I, however, would still pass on this. I honestly don't think it's worth investing on a console just for one game, and an FPS at that (not really my cup of tea). Add to that the notorious reliability of the hardware itself. So perhaps not. Not saying it's not a great game, of course. If you're praising it as much, then it must be well-deserved.

Hey Ben, while I really enjoyed Killzone 2, I don't think a lot of people really consider KZ2 holding the FPS title.

I personally can't say if it deserves it or not, because the only FPS games I've played in the past few years are Killzone 2, Bioshock 1 & 2 and R1 & 2. So I've missed out on a lot of them.

But really, I don't think I've really read any article anywhere else but here that thinks KZ2 holds that title, maybe it was mentioned in some of the reviews (which I think I recall) but that was a while back, I'm not sure it still holds it.

I have about 15 people on my friend's list and I don't think I've seen anyone play it in about 8 months or so.

KZ2 was good, I definitely did not hate it. I enjoyed it. But I challenge anyone to explain to me what makes it so much better than Halo 3, Half Life 2, and MW. And yes, we already know KZ2 looks nice with it's post-processing effects.

My synopsis of KZ2:

Pros:
::Great graphics (it's highest achievement)
::Fresh spin on FPS genre in regards to semi-sim/action FPS (interesting weighty controls)
::Great animation. MW is the only game that challenges it in this department. I remember how impressed I was by MW the first time I saw it in action. I'd say these two are about equal here.
::Online play was solid in KZ2 but definitely not as robust in general modes of play compared to the already infinite amount online shooters on the market:TF2, Halo, CoD, L4D etc. It was interesting to have the carrosel of game modes shift from objective to objective.

Cons: Lack of weaponry. THe game borders sci-fi and more modernized industrial military design. It allows for more freedom than CoD but it isn't nearly as interesting as Resistance or Halo in weaponry. Seriously, Resistance and Halo does SO MUCH MORE in this department.

:: The story is okay, but the characterization did very little to draw me close to the characters. When your comrade died, was it Rico?, it really did nothing for me. A missed attempt at trying to create emotion. Half Life 2 and Halo have both topped it in this category... especially HL2

:: No one does vehicular integration better than Bungie. Valve also did quite well with HL2. A whole layer of depth gets integrated into battle that is nearly absent from KZ2 altogether. The tank battle was okay, but we've been there done that with more meaning in past CoD games. That little robot arcade segment was nice, but way too linear in implementation and totally forgettable.

::Lack of enemy types. Turn on HL2, Resistance, and Halo and you'll encounter what seems like double the amount of enemy types.

:: Horrendous co-op AI. Not that other FPS games have done so much better in this category. But I can say I've gotten more frustrated with KZ2's partner AI than from any other FPS game.

I could go on, but I'm out of time and really I don't care too much now. Running through this list totally reaffirms that KZ2 was nice, and worthwhile. But not a standard setter in any way other than graphics. Which even then, several games have better texturing (I'm not going to go there )

Alienage, I think any of these devs who are worth their salt will look at their competition and draw inspiration. But, yeah, "huge impact" I think is too bold a claim.
I do see a lot of parallels at play between CoD and KZ. I can liken it's play to CoD more so than to Halo, Resistance, and HL2. I will say that if MW2 had only a longer single player game I'd take it over KZ2. What was there in MW2 was sometimes really exhilarating and nearly shocking. The game really made an impression on me with how they integrated residential areas and iconic modern US settings into a war zone. Not to mention the wonderfully smooth 60fps play. There's also some nice tactical depth when it comes to shooting through walls, and going prone.

I'm really at odds with Ben when he claims no CoD can touch KZ2, because outside of it's short length MW2 can.

When my PS2 burned out, I copped an Xbox from a garage sale. The first game I bought was Halo. I sort of like it but I never finished it because it was kind of long and boring. Then I bought Halo 2 and it was the same thing. Long and boring. Didn't finish that one either. That was my last Halo experience. Playstation for life.

Temjin001,

<<<<speaking of being MAJORLY influenced>>>>>>

Actually, the influence goes back longer than that, back to at least 1987, where Jin Roh had got it's own influence.

FYI, on the the front cover art copies of my 2 Mamoru Oshii films(BTW, mine has different cover art than Wikipedia shows theirs as), "The Red Spectacles" & "Stray Dog:Kerberos Panzer Cops" both show the original "red eyes" we now know as Heghast. And the Jin Roh version is a carbon copy of the red-eye on the cover of my own "Red Spectacles" copy.

And it's almost the same for Stray Dog, with 2 exceptions, one being slightly different breathing respirators on their face-plates, and secondly, a more simpler generic(uglier), armor design.

i really want to play Alan Wake, the psychological adventure equivalent to Heavy Rain on 360.

never a fan of Halo, the only game I bought for Halo is the Halo War, which is a Real Strategy game very similar to Star Craft 2 or Red Alear 3, nothing to do with FPS. but that was about it. never a fan of FPS a bit. sorry, but thats wut type a gamer i am.

Have never cared for Halo.

Just not my cup of tea. I used to be all over those FPS like a hot flannel, but now?

I like something I can think about for ages, like Heavy Rain.

It's amazing how many ups and downs are on this page. I think it's pretty telling that some PS3 fans would rather not admit to liking FPS games, or Halo because it would affirm that their hated system, x360, happens to offer a few things they actually would like. It's easier to fend the desire off with scornful energy than it is to accept the reality that the PS3 doesn't always have all the best stuff.

for my part, I can count the 360 games I want on one hand even if this is a solid title. All I need for FPS is Resistance, Killzone, and Bioshock.

I can go to 2 hands. But that's about it. PS3 has really come into it's own over the last couple years. I'm really wondering if MS will be able to get my money with their next platform. Patience really seemed to have paid off for those who invested into PS3 this gen.

Here's were your wrong Temji, you cant assume some people are just refusing to admit they like FPS out of some deep hatred for the genre or MS. your assuming things you have no way of proving.

I am assuming.

Am I assuming too much? I dunno.

I know I've been tempted before to fill the vacant hole of satisfaction that others have that I do not with scorn. I was drawing more from emotional intelligence on this one. Whether it's truly accurate, or not, I don't know. But I will say, in my time, and dealings and experiences with people, I'm pretty accurately perceptive on such things.

@Temjin001

The only thing that got my interest on the 360 is Bioshock, but since that's on the PS3, i don't see any reason why to shell out some money for a 360.

Nothing right now seems to interest me as of yet, I'm waiting for something to come that will. Then i will get one.

So far right now the PS3 has what i need and to fill my thirst for what ever i need in any genre.

I like my shooters and all, but i like variety when I'm in different moods. I'm sure others are in the same boat as me, and some might not be.

Cool Clamedeus, I've been feeling the desire to cut ties with MS myself. It really just depends on what they can offer during the next gen. I don't want to rule myself out from awesome games. But if the next gen will be anything like this gen, I think I'll just follow Sony's lead. I'll be patient and deal with minor inconsistencies in multi-plats and relish in the awesome exclusives and call it good.

I was going to ask how you were liking it at the Week in Review Ben, I'm glad to hear it is a success. Your thoughts on games, ALL games, are always welcome here. Like you said, we kid around a lot and bash on things, but in spirit this is a reasonable adult community that can appreciate thoughtful discussion.

The success of CoD means people will just buy any brand with a name on it. They could release CoD: Lose your job, girlfriend, and your car suddenly explodes and you hit rock bottom 16 and people would buy it because it is Call of Duty. The funny thing is, is that its the exact same way with Halo. Any fan will buy it just for the name, they charged $60 for an EXPANSION! And people paid that!(ODST) If that isn't the prime example of how ignorant and gullible people are just to get the next big FPS I don't know what is.

But Ben, I am going to have to disagree. I bought a crapbox to try out Alan Wake and I was ultimately disappointed. The game wasn't bad but I just kept waiting to get immersed, to be impressed and it never happened. The backdrops were stunning but the facial animations, character models, they were beyond awful for 5 years of development. And collecting Coffee Thermoses? Seriously? I really liked both Max Payne's but come on Remedy. Bad Form. Halo Reach may be the best for last, but it really isn't anything to write home about. If anyone is a fan that is fine, and keeping an open mind I completely agree with but I will utilize my Open Mindedness all different genres of games.

Halo Reach is a great game. No reason to hate. The Matchmaking is FAR superior to anything available on PS3. Halo Reach is by FAR the best Halo game ever made. It is the only one I've enjoyed since the original. It has reminded me of why I loved Halo way back when. Bungie has done a great job.

I agree wholeheartedly Ben. Killzone 2 has its work cut out for it. Online infrastructure is very important this time around.

On topic: I almost bought the le silver 360 that comes with this game. Not because of this game, but because I still wanna play Gears of War 1 and 2, and whatnot. Then I realized I was broke, and decided not to.

Off topic: Would someone tell me, if they could be so kind, what's so great about Killzone 2? I've played it through almost twice -- first time right up to Radic, the second time all the way through -- and either I'm missing some integral piece to the puzzle or... O_o

Maybe it's not your type of game, I'm not sure. I loved Killzone 2. It's one of my favorite FPS games. I love the Heavy feel of the controls, and the environment and the atmosphere in the levels. I don't know it's something about the game that appeals to me i cant explain it.

I think Halo is a pretty cool guy. eh kills aliens and doesnt afraid of anything.

On a serious note though, I played ODST when I got my 360 a few months ago. I honestly didn't like it, but then again, I find no fun in FPS's.
I guess that people who like FPS's should play this. From what I've seen, it looks really good.
