Ben's Week In Review: November 28
Wow...I might finally be able to play games I want to play now. The review blitz appears to be over.
CoD Online BETTER remain free
And I don't say that because I play it online a lot; in fact, I don't ever play it nor do I intend to. I say it because considering the situation, the publisher absolutely positively does not need added income on top of the $1 billion+ each installment generates. Modern Warfare 2 topped that ridiculous number and after $650 million in the first week for Black Ops, I'm sure the latest entry will move into the absurd billion-dollar range. Yes, EA has their Online Pass but when it comes to Call of Duty specifically, I can't imagine why Activision would need to monetize the online play. So when I heard a big boss say they would "never charge" for said service, I sort of went, "...yeah, and you better not. Hell do you need it for?" Yes, we all know Activision likes money, but all publishers like money.
I have no problem with Black Ops (besides the fact that they released a somewhat shoddy product in terms of technical polish), but I do have a problem with needless money hunting in the face of gigantic revenue numbers. I can't wait for them to try to convince us they're losing money on the cost of maintaining the servers for CoD online. As if the DLC and overall profit stream isn't enough. I'm just waiting.
Not sure if I'll ever care about Mass Effect
You would think I'd love it, if only because of the lack of RPGs I really want to play this generation. And I admit I didn't try the sequel, although I'll probably try to review it next year when it comes to the PS3. But the original really left a bad taste in my mouth - I still say it's little more than a mediocre third-person shooter combined with an okay story and a few RPG elements - and that remains. Everyone is excited over the possibility of a Mass Effect 3 teaser video at the Spike VGAs, but I'm having trouble caring. Maybe it's just because I still prefer the traditional sword 'n staff setting rather than the sci-fi theme. After all, I can't wait for Dragon Age II...but those games play very differently, don't they? They also feature very different design styles and environments, so...
But maybe my mind will change when I try ME2, and then I can get all hyped up for ME3. For the time being, I'll stick with Dragon Age and Fable III. No turn-based in sight but whatever.
Personal gaming update
As I said before, the deluge of new releases has finally abated and I can play three games I actually want to play: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Fable III and Gran Turismo 5. I haven't started the latter but I'm knee deep in Brotherhood and I know for a fact I'll have to finish it before focusing on something else. I'm actually thinking that something else might be Fable III rather than GT5...the racer will take up a lot of my time, and I'm really aching to play an RPG. Besides, I've got almost two months until the next game that I want hits store shelves (Dead Space 2), so time shouldn't be an issue. I played the first hour of Fable III just to get a look at it. I have no comments just yet but I do have high hopes.
And maybe, just maybe, if everything goes smoothly and I have plenty of time, I'll pick an old-school RPG to go through again. I was actually thinking about DQVIII or Suikoden III...

GT5, GT5, GT5, GT5, GT5,....
Oh, and Hexyz Force on the PSP, which I'm playing when not near the PS3.
Ben, if you have a PSP handy and want an old skool JRPG, Hexyz Force provides, and doesn't really worry about being a bit of a dungeon crawler with a turn based combat system and some item synthesis.

I wouldn't get too excited for Fable III Ben, I haven't played it, but I hear that it devolves into fetch quests to get things to make people like you and join your cause. I liked the first one though so who knows.
I just finished Crisis Core, man that was the first Prequel to anything that I really enjoyed, that was better than anything that SE has put out for this generation of consoles. So epic. For my turn based fix I got Crimson Gem Saga. Just beat Bioshock for the second time and the good ending. I kinda wanna replay New Vegas, but there's other games I haven't even gotten to yet. Good thing I don't get any new ones till Xmas.

Basically, I wouldn't want a big time Virtua Fighter player who openly admits to disliking Tekken to be reviewing the next big Tekken game. If you get my meaning.
And the other PSXe reviewer, John Shepard, kinda has first dibs, don't you think? =p
And I happen to really have liked ME1's story... grrrr!
As for the other topics...
I don't really care if CoD goes pay to play. I guess as a matter of principle, I wouldn't want CoD serving as a catalyst to cause most every game to become pay to play online... so boo! on pay to play!
I'm installing GT5 onto my PS3 HDD. I just wanted to install the huge installation and download any current updates before Christmas day.
There's two major points I think are significant about GT5.
Simulators and physics work best on PS3 compared to the console competition. Some here may know already, but the PS3 is a FLOPS powerhouse. So much so, scientists purchased PS3's by the pallete just to calculate their crazy alogorythms. No other peice of hardware at the time could crunch as many flointing point operations as the PS3 could at that price point. This alone makes it superior from a hardware perspective. Forza players may cry that their game is de-coupled from the screen refresh rate at 360hz, but that doesn't mean the physics calculations are more precise. In fact, one of my favorite tracks in GT5 Prologue was the Daytona course. It was so awesome because of those subtle undulations in the road surface. At higher speeds, a player really had to focus holding their car steady from breaking traction even on straight ways. Before GT5 Prologue, I never experienced this before in any racer. It suggests to me that the physics engine is insanely ahead of it's class by this alone. And the Nissan 370z feels so much more convincing in GT5 Pro than it does in Forza 3.
Secondly, I think GT5 paints a good example of the production and time constraints that devs face this console generation. That is, GT5's 200 premium cars are meticulously detailed to a level that no other game has achieved. Yet, so many critics seem to criticize the game because not all 1000+ cars are premium. I'm sorry, you guys don't get it. The breadth of the GT series is so massive that in order to get every last car to premium grade you'd have had to wait twice as long. Not to mention, that Sony would've had to spend that much more to produce it. It just becomes way too economically suicidal to try and make money on the series at that point. Do we remember Sega's last multi-million dollar game that went way over budget in production? It was revealed that shortly before Shenmue launched on DC, Sega realized they'd have to sell two copies of Shenmue to every one DC owner before they'd make a profit on the game... sorry, that's putting yourself on the fast track to failure.. and we all know where Sega ended up.
Anyway, I scored some great deals on awesome PS3 games this week. Uncharted Drake's Fortune $4, Infamous $15, Joe Danger $7.50, and, well, Dragon's Lair....I just had to finally play it. Since I was a child I wanted to play it. Now that I have... well... it's got a lot of charm and great animation =)

I think it's worth getting excited about for people who don't own both consoles. It never hurts to have another great game on the PS3 to go with all the rest of the great games.

I might be interested in ME3, but I've got a backlog two or three hundred hours long, so it'll take a year on Pluto for me to catch up. I'm alright with buying shorter games, because you can blitz them in little more than a week, but when you've got a game that'll take fifty hours or more to get through the campaign... No.
Personal Update:
Finished Bioshock 2, posted the review, it's over there <<< somewhere. Also playing GoW:GoS again when I feel like ripping a few things to pieces.
Still going on Dorian Gray, and loving the philosphical nature and views of it. It was hard to get into after the humorous style of Catch-22, but it's all good.
And GT5... Need more be said? Matter of fact, I'm going back to it now. Fare thee well.
Peace.

BikerSaint has reported that the "Reply" button disappears on him sometimes and no one knows why, so if you can't see it, maybe that's happening to you too.
p.s. there are also buttons there for "Report" and, on your own posts, for "Edit" and "Delete".

Yeah, It drives me "Nucking Futs"
For me, that reply button actually winds missing on quite a lot of posts, & if someone has already used it just once, it has completely disappeared on me
Soooo, unfortunately for me(and all of you readers out there in monitorland), I wind up having to scroll down until I can find the next available reply button still there(belonging to a completely different poster), & just do my reply from that one.

It's strange, the reply button is just missing altogether on only the posts that were already replied on by someone else, & it's like that button was never there to begin with(but I can still see the yellow triangle spam button even in those posts where the reply button is missing. And running my mouse over the spot where it should be doesn't do anything(no pointing finger icon), so my mouse doesn't detect even a hidden presence of the button,
Damned Gremlins!
Matter of fact, your reply & the next 3 posts down after yours had no reply button either, so I had to make this reply from the next post after them that still had a reply button, which was "GuernicaReborn"'s post.
It's always been this way for me ever since I first joined the site & using Windows. But I had changed over to Mozilla's FireFox when we first started getting those intrusive ads(which I already had a heated argument with that "self-absorbed, thinks-he-knows-it-all" Spartan twit over in our forum), & the missing reply button is still the same problem.
This is the only site & forums that I've ever encountered this weird missing reply button problem, and believe me, I've been of at least a 100+ sites & assorted forums over the years, so I know it's not me.
BTW, I've left very many posts on this very same complaint in a lot of prior posts dating back about my replies being all over the place during the last 2 years, but nobody from the site, or the webmaster himself, ever get's back to me about finding a cure or temporary fix for this problem.
So since they haven't cared about it, then "F" it, and I'm certainly not going to get my panties all wadded up in a bunch over it either, LOL
BikerSaint
Sunday, November 28, 2010 @ 8:30:37 PM
Thanks, but I had already switched over to FireFox last year when those $$^$%& intrusive ad's started infecting the posts, & it's still continuing to happen(BTW, I switched to FF just for that very AdBlock Plus, yeah very good program).
So I just feel there's no sense for me to keep changing over to any more browsers.
It' the site's problem, not mine, so I/you/we/or anybody else, shouldn't be the ones who have to keep trying to find the cure-all for whatever is ailing it.
Alienange,
It that right?
OK, I understand that & I always do that if I'm replying to that poster & their button's there.
But that makes no sense at all to me if I'm trying to post to one of the other posters who's already replied to the original poster.
And I've never seem another site where you couldn't direct your post exactly to that very person you wanted it to go to. And I've never seen another site that didn't have a button to everyone's post for that very same reason.

The technical problems just lead to multiple facepalms during the campaign. But let me ask Treyarch a question. You made a game called Black Ops and not once, not ONCE, do you pick up a sniper rifle.

plus imagine the backlash they would get, MW2 did not have dedicated servers and the sh*t hit the fan so imagine what would happen if they started charging for online!
I was at a family function last night, talking to a few family members trying to get a grip on what sony would be announcing at the VGAs.
im starting to think it will be sly 4, since the trailer was in the collection and sucker punch did not do the collection.
so that hints to the same developers doing sly 4 instead of SP, and that would make more sense if SP were working on it they would not announce it yet because it would overshadow there other game infamous 2.
I seriously hope it is not sly 4, as much as i want it i already know its coming so i dont want a announcement, i want a announcement of something we dont know thats coming.
number 1 pick would be finally a ps3 syphon filter game!
one of the most popular playstation franchises, the best game on the PSP, and one of the very few series to still be exclusive to playstation since its creation most of the others sony killed off like spyro, crash ect.
i am 100% positive there is a new syphon filter in the making since there has been heaps of rumors that is what sony bend is working on and the last game they made was resistance retribution which released in 08.
so what have they been doing for the past 2+ years?
if not than number 2 pick would be a new medievil game.
again sony cambridge has not released a game in a long time, they made the original and again there has been lots of rumors of them doing a new medievil game.
SIR DANIEL IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
number 3s a long stretch, but the host of the VGAs gave a little wink saying who said sonys exclusive wont be at the VGAs?
than that trailer of a zombie game crept up.
further research its apparently a resident evil game, now slant six were rumored to be making a new RE game, which was rumored to be MP as we all know crapcom wont release a exclusive game, all they want is $$$$$$$$.
yea sony did say exclusive reveal, but read that properly.
ps3 exclusive reveal could mean reveal of a ps3 exclusive OR it could mean exclusive reveal of a MP game but there only showing the ps3 version for now.
meaning this is the first place you will see it, ps3 exclusive reveal does not always mean the game is exclusive too ps3.
got to learn how to read in between the lines, see past the PR talk.
4 would be the return of the getaway and 8 days!
these will eventually come out, sony spent millions on these and there apparently both around 70% done so there not going to put all that money, effort into them than throw it away.
5 is a pipe dream, but eh we can all dream cant we?
a reboot of crash bandicoot helmed by ND!
that would make me the happiest thing alive!
nothing could make me happier, than to see my favorite developer return to my favorite series!
than theres crashes official site, a article went up on there lately apologizing for the lack of updates but promises what is probably the biggest update the site has ever seen! coming mid december.
thats a little close too the VGAs for my liking!
oooooooooooooooooh, im starting too feel 6 years old all over again!
6 maybe im a crackpot and am reading too much into this, and it will be new news on a known game.
or a massive disappointment like it always is!
but eh, im in a optimistic mood for a change. so fingers crossed its not!

An amazing 3D transition. 2D Castlevania is something else. People shouldn't go expecting a full crazy 2D world. They should expect a cinematic story-filled Castlevania that strives in showing all the action in a way 2D Castlevania never could.

Playing fifa10 on legendary with manual controls = hell. Honestly, I can go from 5-0 up to losing 5-6. You had better not be near me when that happens XD
Apart from that mainly KZ3 beta. Immensly good...2 v 2 fights with exo-skeleton is epic. This beta alone has sealed a D1B for me. Fix up the framerate (gets pretty bad in the draw distance) and you got yourself best looking game on the PS3...imagine this in 1080p 0_o

I'm hugely psyched for Dead Space 2. Already pre-ordered. Dead Space was probably my favorite game of all time.
I'm currently playing GT5. I dunno. GT4 was awesome back in the day, but this just seems such an archaic throwback that I'm getting a bit tired of it. I'd like to take one of the nice cars I've bought and race it, but I've already raced them in the 3 events that are available for them, numerous times. Seems like I spend a third of my time in the menus, endlessly checking the used car lot for some Japanese jalopy I can spend a quarter million modifying so it's vaguely competitive in some race I need to complete in order to finish off some series. And the AI cars...good lord. They're not even programmed to recognize the existence of a human-controlled car in their midst. They drive right into you and continue driving into you until they've performed a PIT maneuver on you, then the brainless automatons behind plow straight into you at full throttle, one after another. It makes it really damned hard to "race" when everybody else is playing demolition derby. And that's just totally unacceptable in 2010.
I dunno. I wouldn't mind if I could just get on the Nurburgring (even in arcade mode) and buy a nice variety of cars to race against some suitable competition, but who knows what level I need to get up to before that's possible.
We'll see how it goes I guess. The game's got a lot of great things about it, but when you're spending so much time in menus or waiting for some car that you have no interest in to eventually show up in the used car lot so you can buy it for some event you need to complete, it gets old.
Maybe I'll go back to F1 2010. Now THAT was some racing.

The emphasis on slow in/out fast has multiplied ten fold. It's fun and frustrating. Head tracking doesn't work at a 5 foot distance, although I wouldn't actually use it if it did.
Ben, I would imagine ME2 will indeed change your mind. Perhaps not a flawless game, but definitely offers quite a bit. I wasn't as excited about sexual interactions, but whatever... It seemed to be the hype a lot of virgins were looking for! Haha...

The good news...
I'm still well into GTA4, over 130 hours so far playing around doing the side quests before I actually finish the last 25% of the story mode.
The bad news...
A new group of investor's have just bought my casino, and they're chopping jobs throughout all the Casino & hotel departments.
The latest rumor is that starting tomorrow, they going to go through my gaming department & chop away 20% of the dealers on all 3 shifts before the holiday season, so from now till then, my own job is in serious jeopardy.
The good news....
I already bought 6 more games a couple days ago before I head this rumor.
The bad news....
I guess I should refrain from buying any more before I know whether or not I'm safe from their chopping block.
The good news...
If I become history at my job, I'll just go on unemployment for a while & get started on Borderlands, GTA:Episodes From Liberty City, Deadly Premonition, Alan Wake, and the Just Cause2 that LV lent me.
The bad news.....
Now at 58, I don't want to start looking for another job all over again, from one that I've already held on to for the last 21 years
And also whittle down some more from my huge backlog of other games.
The good news....
I'll now have more time to whittle down my huge backlog of other games.
And I just signed up for the 31 day free trial of Netflicks & have added over 250 movies into my "instant queue', so now I need to start a whole new marathon of movie watching to my list of "to-do" too.
The bad news...
I might only be able to watch 248 of those movies before my free 31 day trial movie marathon is up. ***Sigh***
And last, but not least......
Depressing news....
If I am sh*t-canned, I won't be getting that $4000 check that $3 grand of it I had earmarked for buying more consoles, hand-helds & games for my library.
Hopeful news.....
Would be if I could buy the only winning Mega-millions or Powerball lottery ticket now, so I just don't ever have to worry about bad news any f*cking more!
