Game of the Year

Nominees

  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Heavy Rain
  • God of War III
  • Gran Turismo 5
  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Winner: TIE: Heavy Rain and Gran Turismo 5

Let us explain. Usually, we spend the necessary time to narrow it down to two choices - which was hard enough this year - and then we do a direct compare-and-contrast and select an overall winner. But when we set out to do that this year, we hit a wall: we narrowed it down to the two finalists but how in God's name do you directly compare Heavy Rain and Gran Turismo 5 against each other? After much discussion, we discovered that it simply wasn't possible.

Heavy Rain left an indelible imprint on our minds that hasn't abated. Because it released back in February, we weren't sure if it could stand the test of time; might that memorable, immersive, singular experience remain all rosy in our minds? Even after the year's heaviest competition arrived? The answer was yes. In looking back, the game only appears even more impressive; even more progressive and innovative; even more fulfilling from an artistic and emotional standpoint. With so many different outcomes and a story that never seems to grow stale, this interactive drama is an indication of the future.

Such a production absolutely cannot go ignored, and absolutely must receive the praise and accolades it so richly deserves. We will also stand by our review - linked above - as being one of the best on the Internet. We honestly hope it's indicative of the future and Quantic Dream needs to be commended for such an ambitious accomplishment. It's still the one game that continually makes us feel, over and over and over again.

As for GT5, we have something special lined up: Arnold will handle the explanation; he's writing up a specific feature to explain how Polyphony's amazing driving simulator became one of our picks for Game of the Year. He will also address many of the ill-conceived complaints other critics and gamers have had; as we've mentioned in the past and as is obvious by reading our review, if the analyst isn't checked out on automobile and racing knowledge, that person simply isn't qualified to judge the game in question. Stay tuned for that; he'll be posting it up soon, and I'm sure it'll be well worth a read, especially if you're a car enthusiast/bona fide auto-phile.

That oughta do it. We've done our best. We're sorry we couldn't settle on an outright Game of the Year for 2010, but you should understand our reasons. Hope you enjoyed yourselves and here's to another great year!

We can't forget the most active PSXE community members who continue to make this site so darn lively and enjoyable. It's thanks to such posters that we have a site where civil, knowledgeable gamers can come, relax, and discuss. Thanks to:

Good choices all around. Glad to see best art direction and music was AC Brotherhood, the developers put a lot of effort to really make Italy alive. Also glad to see Battlefield BC 2 as best shooter. Unlike what seems like every other site, you guys actually put some real thought into your awards. Great job.

Competition amongst Sony's best game is always great.

You really can't go wrong with Heavy Rain or Gran Turismo 5. GOWIII being in that discussion as well.

I'll give a more thoughtful response to the article later on. For now I agree completely with the awards. Objectively the games that deserved the awards got the awards.

No Platformer of the year award. Platformers outside Nintendo, Media Molecule, and Imsoniac are truly dying :(

Can't wait to read Arnold's detailed GOTY analysis. It takes more than a regular gamer to actually review games with extreme depth. I've been playing GT since GT1 and there's so much more depth and new stuff added to each new game that I still feel like a n00b (a good thing). It means the sequels have more depth than the previous game.

Favorite new cars: GT by Citroen, Gran Turismo (car), FT-86, and the X1. There are more that I'm sure I've yet to set my eyes on. 1000+ cars, hard to track them all down.

Special Stage Route 7 is a race track sent from heaven. Even if I still suck at it driving on that track is like driving in heaven.

Well, I agree with most of those winners. Those that I don't, I can definitely see where you're coming from. At least you guys actually reward the quality, rather than what the masses approve, like most sites.

And the GotY... Deserving. Pushing the boundaries in new ways. Making people take notice based on the quality alone. Giving people a reason to care and want to continue playing, the winner has it all. Most highly recommended in my opinion. (I've held off stating the winner to avoid spoilers for people who read the comments from the first page.)

Keep it up PSXE, and thanks.
Peace.

I like that you guys made a variety of choices. At least you didn't choose shooters as the winner for every category like most seemingly mindless sites do. I'm just sad that Peace Walker didn't win anything. That was an amazing game. Nonetheless, great post guys and I hope to see more awesome content in the new (current) year!

I was shocked and impressed with the GOTY award. Heavy Rain and GT5 are the two games that I feel are the most worthy of the title. I got a good laugh as well and I would have lost money because I didn't see it coming.

I'm playing GT5 with a wheel and it has made so much of an improvement in my driving, that tracks I used to dread are now some of my favorites to race. I just don't see this game getting old anytime soon.

I definitely want to see more games from Quantic Dream. Heavy Rain makes me wish I hadn't missed Cage's previous work.

RDR is my favorite multiplatform game. One of the best I've played in a long time. I'm glad it won some awards because Rockstar did an excellent job making this western.

If you can find Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit) it's worth a play. Don't bother with Omikron The Nomad Soul though.

Tes37,
I you do look for it, make sure you look for the European version "Fahrenheit" first, instead of the North America version, Indigo Prophecy".

The Fahrenheit version has all of the mature scenes still intact, as where Atari, made them delete those scenes out of the NA version.
And this was due to their publisher,
"Atari" being afraid of what rating the ERSB would wind up tagging it with.

Fun fact:
The name change to "Indigo Prophecy" came about due to the fact that Micheal Moore was either going to release, or already had released(can't remember which) another of his controversial sensationalized-hype movies out in NA around around the same time period, called "Fahrenheit 911".
So Atari didn't want their game getting confused, or associated, with that movie.

I'm not sure telling World he knows nothing about comics is an adequate answer to his question... lol

As far as the general understanding of what constitutes a "Comic" style, Heavy Rain isn't easilly understood as very comic-ish... I'm not saying you're wrong, Alienage, but I don't get it either and would love to know what you mean.

And am I to understand you don't feel they backed up their reasoning for the awards appropriately? I dunno... phrases like "It's got you and Arnold written all over it" just seems sort of snide... especially when you say nothing to support yourself.

I liked the goty, that was very good thinking because for me it came down to those 2 and god of war 3 as well, I decided after a lot of though on god of war 3 by a smidge just because I like those type of games a bit more, but in reality i would count all 3 a tie, they all deserve it, AM I RIGHT.

@ sticklife - The weapon upgrading only plays a large part towards the end of the game. Going from +5 strength to +7 strength doesn't do much for you.

When the time is right and you have tons of components, you can use the components that have the bones icon to up your multiplier (max x3)and then use the components that look like screws to get the most XP bang for your buck.

That way you go up a good 6-7 levels at a time and the added stats actually help.

Ben,Arnold(and sometimes John?),

A very good list of winners!

And I'm glad to see Heavy Rain got 3 nods & shared the bill as GOTY.
Now all we need is for numerous sites to also give H.R. their nod too, and I foresee David Cage finally giving us those 3 missing DLC's ASAP in the GOTY version.

I was also glad to see Alan Wake get the nod in the Non-Playstation category. Another good title was Limbo, & I'd definitely give it an honorable mention, although it was a only a down-loadable title.

Interesting. I like. Except the best writing/story winner.

Heavy Rain was a game I *really* wanted to like. I described it to my friends as being a "playable version of David Fincher's Se7en" and it absolutely was not that. The plot was trite and uninteresting to me for the sole reason of the flat delivery of the character's lines, the forced emotional moments, the random events that were too distracting from the plot (really? changing a diaper progresses the narrative. Changing diapers is something I don't care to do in the real world, it's something I never want to do in a video game. The game also couldn't decide how the narrative was going to play out. It was half-awkward psychological thriller, half-awkward prime time drama, and half-awkward science fiction crime procedural. The science fiction aspect of the ARI events removed me from the atmosphere that the other sides of the game were trying to build up. You can't have one side of the game massively futuristic, while the rest of it feeling like it's set in the here and now without it falling into the realm of fantasy.

Se7en, this was not. Silence of the Lambs, this was not.

It was an okay effort, especially for opening the doors to a new "genre" of video games and to take a distinctly different approach to a game's narrative rather than running and gunning, hacking and slashing, your way through it. I'm VERY glad it was made, I'm VERY glad people liked it, and I hope it opens doors for people to create something that is comparable to other stories in this same genre that have come from other entertainment mediums.

After the rant, however, I do have to admit that I didn't (couldn't) finish the game. I found it very hard to play through a game with such uninteresting and badly voiced characters (the only one I liked and found to be believable wasn't playable; the mother the private investigator saves from the brutish bully early on) and I encountered that awesome Madison Page walking the Stairway to Heaven glitch and I just gave up after that.

I do intend on playing it again someday, whenever I get the cash to buy it again, because for some odd reason I always give games I dislike second, third, and fourth chances. Like Killzone. I've played through it four times now, trying to find what everyone claims is so amazing about it. Ha. Maybe playing it again will change my opinion of it, but it was not the best told story in video games this year. I think everyone just gives it more credit than it deserves for being so drastically different from everything else and quite pretty (and around these parts, being a PS3 exclusive doesn't hurt at all either).

Oh, please, do go ahead and tell me why I'm "backwards," because I'm sure it'll be quite interesting and rather humorous. So, please, enlighten me.

Your advice, however, is solid and quite useful, but it isn't needed by me. I needed money 'cause I was short on rent and had to make a decision: sell some video games or sell some books. Games are easier to sell and can get you more than books can. I didn't WANT to get rid of Heavy Rain, nor BioShock 1 & 2, or any of the others I had to ditch at that time, but it was a necessity.

I'll just make a few points. Few if any events in Heavy Rain are there for no reason. Yes, even taking care of the baby is ultimately important to the development of Shelby's character.

Augmented Reality Interfaces aren't science fiction, they are already in use and advancing at a good clip. It isn't difficult to envision something similar being used in the field in the near future, especially when examining a crime scene that has been processed by CSIs already. If using that took you out of the game then I can't imagine you got very far because it is useful at scenes where other characters have been and helps build the tension.

Also, you fall short of credibility when trying to jam it into the mold of a movie about a serial killer. Is it a step forward for the serial killer story genre? No, it's a step forward for storytelling in Video Games and the ultimate focus is choice and its affect on how events unfold and eventually end.

The acting could be a bit off at times, but it wasn't flat, there was a lot of emotion involved.

Also, one glitch is hardly a game killer.

"I'll just make a few points. Few if any events in Heavy Rain are there for no reason. Yes, even taking care of the baby is ultimately important to the development of Shelby's character."

Okay, so, I'm writing a novel, and the character drinks a lot. A lot a lot. Do I, or do I not choose to spend several hundred words to detail how often he has to urinate? Yes, it's part of his character, and it's an attribute that may or may not define who he is, but it's better left out of the finished product, 'cause, really, who wants to read a novel where a character is peeing every fifteen to twenty minutes? That's what I got from those moments in the game, regardless of how integral they are to the development of a character. Changing a baby in a video game is a tedious thing, regardless of it detailing how NOBLE the character is. Plus the game, as far as I played, was full of things better left undone. Showering, sitting at the drawing table, opening and closing doors just to go outside, playing with a VR bouncy ball because you're waiting in a police station. This is all stuff that we all do in the real world, but it's amateurish storytelling at its finest.

"Augmented Reality Interfaces aren't science fiction, they are already in use and advancing at a good clip. It isn't difficult to envision something similar being used in the field in the near future, especially when examining a crime scene that has been processed by CSIs already. If using that took you out of the game then I can't imagine you got very far because it is useful at scenes where other characters have been and helps build the tension."

No, I didn't get very far. And there's a far cry of a difference between what's being used in the field today, and the portable Holo-Deck that character borrowed from Star Trek to help him redecorate his office. This part of the game drew me OUT of the fiction, when the intention of any one telling a story should be trying to draw an audience INTO it. As it worked in the fiction, as far as I got into it, it was very science-fiction-like compared to the rest of the real world setting the game was trying to establish early on. It would have been much more plausible within the game's own fiction standards to just have him doing grunt detective work, thus eliminating the necessity for two characters.

"Also, you fall short of credibility when trying to jam it into the mold of a movie about a serial killer. Is it a step forward for the serial killer story genre? No, it's a step forward for storytelling in Video Games and the ultimate focus is choice and its affect on how events unfold and eventually end."

Like I've stated about this and other games, like Killzone 2, I applaud their achievements and success. I'm glad those games exist, and they are groundbreaking in their own individual ways. But that's not what appeals to me about games, nor is it how I determine whether or not a game is for me, or even if I like it or not. It's the fiction being told. This isn't me trying to "jam it into the mold of a movie" or much else of jamming it into anything. I compared it because of the similar subject matter, and regardless of the interesting gameplay mechanics, the pretty visuals, and the storytelling intricacies, the narrative, the characters, the events, all of what (TO ME, I stress that heavily) all fell flat in coming close to David Fincher's film, or Thomas Harris' novel. And yes, I do cross-pollenate my comparisons. Telling me I'm falling short on my credibility because of such, would be like telling me that my opinion of Hancock (the Will Smith movie) isn't credible because I compared it to previous, and better, superhero stories from a different storytelling medium.

As for my credibility... ha. It's laughable. I'm just a faceless name around here that gets thumbed down for even making a post, regardless of what the post may or may not be consisted of. I mean, just look below. I applaud Ben and Company for this post, because this is hard work, and I get thumbed down. OH, NO! If, and it's a big IF, I have any credibility at all, it's all centered around storytelling, and even then, it's really fallable as I've never been published outside of a fan letter in a WetWorks comic, and my original AOL screen name being printed in on of Jim Lee's books. So, there you go!

"The acting could be a bit off at times, but it wasn't flat, there was a lot of emotion involved."

It was flat, to me. It was unconvincing, and it lacked any real emotion. All the emotion I saw early on (I only made it to the hotel before Madison decided to walk to the sky) felt forced and unnatural from the voice actors. The dialog wasn't greatly written, either. It's not Garth Ennis quality, or ... I can't think of another example. Having a lot of dialog options for instance creates an inconsistency in tone and context which in turn created a feel of unnatural conversation amongst the characters. It's like having the old text based dialog from an RPG vocalized, which didn't have the natural ebb and flow of two people talking.

"Also, one glitch is hardly a game killer."

In your opinion, maybe. But this wasn't like a small bug, or a random removal of the floor like I experienced in God of War III. It was a character refusing to go up a flight of stairs to the second floor of a hotel and then turning around and walking up an invisible flight of stairs. Never stopping. She just kept going until she was little more than a dark spec in the clouds. That's a pretty big glitch.

MadPowerBomber: Wait...you got to the hotel part and stopped? Basically 1/4 of the way through the game? And you sit there, thinking you're somehow qualified to pass judgment? That's insane, my friend. I'm sorry, but you cannot write an entire analysis on Heavy Rain if you haven't finished it. That's quite literally like reading half a book and trying to tell people it's "half this" and "half that," based on...well, half knowledge. Or way LESS than half knowledge, in truth.

Edit: As a side note, I know good literature. I know Heavy Rain is a far cry from the literary masterpieces. But at the same time, I can easily locate and pinpoint glaring, amateurish issues in a story, and I don't find much in Heavy Rain IN COMPARISON to other video games.

MadPowerBomber, it was hard for me to consider much of what you said, especially after your analysis of the diaper changing. Which is unfortunate, because I think you did have a couple nuggets of useful insights. But for the most part, I don't believe you have a firm grasp on how mundane details can affect the development of a character. Do you have any idea how huge a detail that is to Scott Shelby's character? You DEFINITELY wouldn't understand the significance of that if you only got 1/4 of the way through.

In fact, it's those small acts that can definitively define and fill in the holes in characters much poorer pieces of writing, like GOW3 for example, leave the observer alone in filling in the blanks that often lead them to draw inaccurate or inconsistant conclusions about said characters. In the theatrical world, a good director will either draw direct or discrete attention to those actions for the very specific reason or providing the audience with a small window for discovering an important detail about the character's very mind or soul. The diaper changing did just that. In fact, that entire scene is CRUCIAL to Scott's character development.

Additionally, I don't believe it's appropriate to compare this to a literary accomplishment, especially when it is far more similar to a theatrical accomplishment. Each style has it's own merrits, but the way a book is written is tremendously different from the way a theatrical piece is written. I've read a huge amount of theatrical literature, and I believe it's more appropriate to compare Heavy Rain to that. While Heavy Rain is certainly not the best theatrical piece ever written, it does a huge number of elements tremendously in a way that is VERY deserving.

Basically, I don't feel you aren't entitled to your own opinion, but I do feel you have inaccurately judged this story. I think you're probably smart enough that you would likely discover much more relevance in the mundane actions you describe once you uncover more of the story.

When I highlight the thumbs down it says "Disagree", not "Stupid comment". I mean, sure, we all click that button on lots of stupid comments, but that's cause we disagree with them, right? ^.^

i like how the 2 game of the year winners are basically niche titles this generation. Theres nothing like heavy rain and even quantic dream didnt expect it to sell as much copies.

Gran turismo, judging from how other reviewers saw it, is also becoming a niche title. The mainstream now is FPS, Action/adventure, and party games. and gran turismo is a simulator, racing genre just sounds too generic to me, is going the way of fighters and RPGs. todays "gamers" prefer instant gratification and do not have much of an attention span to play games that would require a lot of time and effort. One thing i'm confident about is that unlike how RPGs are being mixed in with other genres, mass effect and what they tried to do with FF13, GT5 will stay true to itself and would just keep improving. If we wanted some action with our car game, then theres hot pursuit or twisted metal anyway.

right now i have brotherhood on deck but i dont know if i'm gonna start that or star ocean. currently working on sly collection, i'm on the second game. I cant believe i labeled this game as a kid game, it can be pretty brutal at times. just got enslaved too so i think i'll be pretty busy till littlebigplanet 2 or killzone 3. 2011 is looking like what 2010 is to me. a brutal assault on my wallet right off the beginning of the year.

I don't agree that you can say GT5 is becoming a niche title based on how other reviewers saw it. I think it's more that the majority of game sites and reviewers cater to a younger demographic that is not interested in deep game play.

I've talked before about the segmentation of the market and how the gamers on the PS3 are generally older and more mature than those on, say, they Wii. Games like GT5 make this segmentation clearer. Obviously it's a generalization, but I believe it is true. The sad part is that the gaming media doesn't represent gamers that aren't in that wonderful 16-30 (I'd have said 18-30, but it's really 16-30 now, even for games rated M) demographic particularly well. Games like GT5, and genre like the JRPG suffer because the media coverage is less favorable, and the more intense coverage has a more negative slant because these games are not perceived to be to the tastes of their target audience.

I really wish that the media and the industry would wake up to different audience segments and demographics and stop trying to be all things to all men. They mostly fail at that, and end up being heavily biased to the male gamer between the ages of about 16-30. Sad, but, I think - true.

I think this was another great year in gaming. It has been a ride for sure. I cant even imagine what conclusion you ( Ben and Arnold) will have to TRY and cole too in 2011.

I'll tell you what Fang is. She's exactly what Ben describes. She's the one that steals the show from FFXIII's "main character" and gives purpose to an otherwise drab narrative. As such, she's an embarrassment.

I'd pick token cowboy over embarrassment any day.

She's an embarrassment because she was a good character and made things interesting...? All right.

As for Marsten, I had a serious problem with the end. It makes little to no sense, especially in regards to his character. He obviously doesn't trust a certain person, and it's obvious he isn't surprised when they come for him. So he just wanders around playing with his wife and kid, ignoring what even HE knows is basically inevitable?

Right. No way. Great character and great game, but that blew it for me.

One more comment that needs to be made: this endeavor, the act of semi-reviewing an entire year's worth of games, for an informal awards ceremony... needs to be commended.

I was contemplating doing this for my blog -- just on the games I played, of course -- and then I looked at my library of PS3 and PSP games and couldn't remember what came out this year and what came out last year and it got hectic. I realized that a lot of work is necessary to go into something like this -- and I may still do it, but I dunno if the novel work is going to let me or not.

So good job guys. This kinda thing seems really easy, but I know first hand that it isn't.

Excellent choices all round. GT5 was my personal pick for GOTY and I think it's completely worthy of that honor.

One thing that is increasingly bothersome is that video gamers and reviewers are increasingly acting like the lowest common denominator. A game like GT5 get's torn to bits by certain reviewers who don't even play it for more than the time it took to install it. That happens because the reviewers are pandering to the gamers who are looking for the instant gratification, surface deep analysis. They don't care much for depth, as long as the game has action. I don't like this trend in gaming. Action games are always welcome, but that doesn't mean that all games have to ape that style and presentation.

Well, whatever, nice awards, and GT5 is most definitely a worthy choice.

Indeed. It was like waking up in Bizarro World after spending some time with GT5. I really have no idea what most of those reviewers were talking complaining about. Their biggest issues with the game are prevalent in a great majority of the games out there especially the Xbox and multiplatform games certain sites praise to no end. Like Max said, jagged shadows and clunky menus go over looked in a game like Halo or Call of Duty yet it was reason for scorn in GT5.

Gratitude for all the thought put into this. I really can't argue with much of it. I was glad to see WKC in there. The game isn't quite up to the epicness of JRPGs of old but when you play it you can't help but see the possibilities and enjoy the presence of old school jrpg staples mixed with next gen stuff like online play, visible armor changes, and custom battle commands. I can't wait to see what they do with part 2.

One I have to disagree with is Fang, she didn't do much for me. I didn't mind that she was a total lesbian for Vanille, but she was such a beech most of the time. I enjoyed Lightning slapping the ho. I'd give that award to Scott Shelby.

Heavy Rain won for me since I don't do racers, and that is great because nothing else this year touched it as far as unique experiences go.

The best pick though was of course "WorldEndsWithMe" (almost made it first) *Shakes fist at Highlander*

i agree with most except best RPG, best shooter, best action/adventure game and best MP game.

best RPG should of gone to ME2, theres a reason why most are giving it not game of the year in its genre, but overall game of the year over all other genres!
GOTY is not a easy title to get!

best shooter should of gone to bioshock 2.
its so different from the original, it had a crap storyline, it had sh*t graphics, but for some reason none of that bothers me!
i guess rapture really does have a strong charm!

best action/adventure game should of gone to GOW ghost of sparta.
i still cant believe its a freaking PSP game!
not only is it better than every other psp game out there, its better than a freaking ps3 game, and no schmuck ps3 game, one of the highest praised ps3 games!
now not many PSP games get that title!

best MP game should of gone to again bioshock 2.
still so impressed by it, cant, cant, CANT FREAKING WAIT for infinite to come out!!!!!!!!!

so nice to see heavy rain getting the recognition it deserves!
GT5 your crazy!
but its nice to see such a outlandish risky what the game being so successful!
hopefully now it will encourage developers to be creative and stray from the norm, instead of following the flock off the cliff and create more shooters!
so nice to finally be able to sit down and play a game and honestly be able to say i have not played this before.
every game feels the same these days, maybe thats why i just dont enjoy playing todays games as much as i do yesterdays games.
maybe thats part of it, but its mostly because yesterdays games were challanging so you actually got a sense of accomplishment when you completed them.
that and they were actually fun, not this create one level than repeat it 10 times repetitive BS!
cough MoH, cough COD BO, cough BFBC2, cough GOW3, cough assassins creed brotherhood, cough RDR, cough almost every single game released this gen!

anyway, props to heavy rain, props to david and thank you for straying away from the norm and having the courage to strive out and give us something weird but truly amazing!
cant wait to see what your next game has in store for us.
only one things for certain, ill be front line center launch night to buy it!

Yeah, in my first playthrough, I got Jayden to pick the wrong guy, and he still showed up at the crime scene. There were others, as PorkChop noted, but I overlooked most, as they seemed unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
Peace.

Spoilers continued:

The way I saw it, we got a perfect explanation about Manfred, Shelby smashed him over the head to get the list, like most other things he did it was all to eliminate evidence that connected him or to use the Origami Killer case against his old enemies.

Ethan got blackouts because he was psychologically and probably physically damaged when the car hit him and his son. I really don't recall if he ever made his own origami figures, but an architect might easily have the skills.

He also doubted his own sanity, not even sure what was real sometimes, so perhaps that explains his beliefs after the finger incident or he was being insincere. OR it was just a big screw up in direction.

And most crime reporters know most cops on the local force if not personally then by reputation, and it seemed likely to me that Madison had known the man in his police days (Maybe that wouldn't be revealed until Shelby's DLC was supposed to come out before it got the axe)

Those are just kind of the way I saw it, not an attempt to discredit your points.

the story was a little extreme, hard to believe someone would go through all that trouble, and put there life at risk so many times to cover tracks which would of never been found.
another plot hole is the characters are never really linked together, why everytime he blacks out does he find a origami figure in his hand, why did ethan and his wife break up.
that said its still the best story ever put in a game, i just wished it was not so far fetched.
kinda hard to get engrossed into something, and really care about it if its so hard to believe.
thats one reason why assassins creeds story is so gripping, because its believable, referencable and is based on real life events.

I agree with where you're coming from. But as you play the game, Manfred walks in the back and you control Shelby the entire time from that exact point. Then you walk in the back and he's dead and the window was open. Plus, Ethan showed up at the site where Shelby's brother died with an origami figure in his hand. They just don't explain the connection, but you were DEFINITELY on to something with the cancelled DLC. I wish those few nagging questions weren't there, but they are trite in the grand scheme of such a great game.

I must agree with everything on that list except for 1. And that would be the audio award going to gran turismo 5. Now if you only drive the premium cars without any upgrades, the audio is incredible. However since the game makes every car sound like a v6 if you so much as put a new air filter on it I have to disagree with that winner. (apart from that it is the best driving game ever played though)

Glad to see my Game of the Year pick, Heavy Rain, finished in the top spot. No other game this year has been more enjoyable and thought provoking. Almost everything else I agreed with. Though the best sports game in my opinion this year has to go to NBA 2K11. I'm not a basketball fan by any means but that game is pure enjoyment with a group of people. And probably the most realistic sports game so far this gen. Best non-PS3 game on that list for me is Mass Effect 2. Just a great game overall with the story, action, voice acting, etc. A complete package. Starcraft 2 was really good too and extremely competitive online. Most overlooked for me would go to 3D Dot Game Heroes. Just a terrific retro blast from the past. And so far I have yet to meet anybody else around this area that has played it. Shame.

Good job on the awards, and great job with the site. Looking forward to an even better year this year. So much gaming goodness to look forward to this year also.

And Happy New Year to everybody.

Damn, wish my name was on that list, but I don't post enough on here to get recognized. Hey got a New Year goal...lol. Anyway, GT5 is addictive, Heavy Rain is unforgettable, Red Dead is a masterpiece, ACB is the best in the series (gameplay wise), GOWIII has ultimate replay value, Bioshock 2 was Bioshock greatness, and 2010 was a fantastic year for gaming. That's just my bit and thanks for these awards. Damn 20ll is going to burnout my PS3...too many games. I will say this though, the complaints I here about GT5 are borderline ridiculous.

Thank you again Ben, Arnold and the PSX team for having brought another great year to all us gamers, looking forward to 2011... it should be a stonking year. I wish I could purchase all the games, but it is impossible to do so... unless you are BikerSaint :)

Regarding Ben's write up, loved it... believe the choices made and reasoning behind those choices are spot on. Couldn't have asked for more.

Considering what Heavy Rain and GT5 have done, are doing, and will continue to do for the gaming world, innovative and spectacular in their detailed and offering, they are a most worthy tie...

Thanks again to the community, always lively, knowledgeable and down right entertainment....

It could be that 2011 will be another tie in the GOTY department... it looks incredible.

Take great care...

This site is one of the few I visit on a regular basis daily. A big reason for that is its uniqueness. The awards here this year certainly fall under that category. Very interesting gentlemen.

I enjoy seeing what all the regulars are saying here. WorldEndsWithMe, BikerSaint, Alienange, Jawknee, Highlander, Tes37 and others. There's no other comment section I'd rather discuss video games in!

Excellent read, i think most of them descisions were fair, though i have to ask, you said that 2010 was weak for RPGS, have any of the previous years been better, i was very happy with Nier and Final Fantasy XIII.

Heavy Rain deserves the GotY title, it's one that will certainly stand out from other GotY titles, as for GT5, i cant jusge, it doesnt appeal to me. Thanks for a mention in the article :D i look forward to complaining at many of you for 2011 :)

Looks like I have another 2011 resolution... to get on to the damn list at the end of the awards! LOL! My first step would most likely be to get an avatar.

Anyway, as far as these awards went, I agreed with almost all of the them. Heavy Rain was an absolute masterpiece and I'm very happy to see it walk away with so many awards.

Usually if a God of War game or Metal Gear Solid game falls in a year, those would be my automatic picks for Game of the Year but I think Heavy Rain definitely deserved it this year.

I just platinumed Heavy Rain yesterday, in fact. I loved the hell out of every moment. With that being said, the amount of times I had to replay through chapters to receive the All Endings trophy was absolutely atrocious. It's safe to say that with as much as I loved Heavy Rain, I won't be playing it again for a very long time. :P

I have to ask, though; for most anticipated game of 2011, why no mention of The Last Guardian? Hell, as much as I'm looking forward to Uncharted 3, any game by Fumito Ueda takes the cake. Even the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus Collection is one of my most anticipated games for next year!

Otherwise, a great list of awards. Well done, Ben & Co.!

I guess I've at some stage played most of the games in most of the category's, the main exception being GT5.

Over-all, I agree with the winners but I would personally of put BFBC2 over GT5 (which I haven't played)for best multiplayer.

It can be argued that because I've not played GT5 I can't really make that decision, but BFBC2 has been so well supported over the year, with new free maps and reasonably priced DLC right up to just a few weeks ago.
Rarely will you have trouble getting a game thats not fully occupied and it's got fantastic mic support and chat features (the option to only have your friends mic's open during a game or in the lobby). Also the game looks fantastic and the experience playing imo is one of the best, dare I say it, this generation.

I'm in no way saying GT5 doesn't excel in what it does, but I personally don't see how it could possibly offer, for me at least, that same fun factor BFBC2 offers.
I guess it should also be taken in consideration, I'm more of an arcade racer and with little knowledge of cars, so a simulator would be lost on me. For me, with the exception of bad quality mic chat, NFS:HP would be more my multiplayer racing experience. But for multiplayer across the board, BFBC2 wins.

For the most 'Under-rated' game category, I'm glad to see WKC win. I didn't really give that game enough of a chance to impress me and got rid of it perhaps prematurely.
However, based on my own gaming habits, I would of loved to see MoH win this category. I'm aware of the bashing WKC got on a lot of other sites. But I feel MoH had really bad timing and unjustified comparisons made with another big shooter released just a month after.
It also had a few teething problems but so did/still does, that other shooter but a lot of gamers expected it to be something else instead of appreciating it for what it was.
I'm hoping as time goes on, semi-bad reviews will be forgotten and people will give it another well deserved shot.

On the same note, I was happy with best shooter going to BFBC2, though I believe MoH had much better presentation then CoD:BO.

All-in-all, really enjoyed having my morning (rather afternoon) coffee, reading the results.

Great stuff!!!

Very nice indeed. Agree with most these. Final Fantasy XIII for best RPG though? Not really an RPG when compared to White Knight Chronicles or Valkyria Chronicles 2.

Very happy Bad Company 2 won. Was the best mulitplayer console shooter this year.

Glad to see PSX picked Gran Turismo 5. Such a good game. Very underrated and under appreciated by the haters. Heavy Rain is no surprise too. Wasn't my favorite this year but was still a damn good game and a very a very original idea for a video game. Can't wait to see what Quantic Dream has in store for us next.

Also I think God of War III had better art direction than Brotherhood. I prefer Greek Mythology and Ancient Greece to Old Italy. Spartans FTW!

Offtopic but I'm playing Parasite Eve Birthday JP Ver., I feel so underwhelmed with the gameplay til now =/.. don't get me wrong the gameplay is solid but now it barely feel like an rpg, well at least much more entertaining 3rd person shooter than ME2.

Underwhelming that the gameplay changed to a tps, Parasite Eve was like a hybrid of turn rpg with the classic RE gameplay it was really nice.

Pretty awesome awards here, probably the best I've seen on any site. Kudos to the people that put this together.

I was somewhat saddened by the absence of my personal favorites of the year (Yakuza 3, 3D Dot Game Heroes, BlazBlue, Red Seeds Profile, Nier), and then kind of laughed to myself to find a good portion of them in the "Most Overlooked" category.

Also... the MGS: Peace Walker trailer is just about the finest video game trailer I've ever seen. Just saying.

Very logical choice and reasoning behind the GOTY decision. I can appreciate the achievement that Red Dead is, but it's not the incredible and groundbreaking piece of gaming everyone is making it out to be, let alone the most important title of 2010. Again, great awards guys.
