Ben's Week In Review: January 9
These days, the industry just loves the first quarter. Mass Effect 2 for the PS3, LittleBigPlanet 2 and Dead Space 2, all this month. Good God.
I don't know why I dislike Elder Scrolls, all right?!
I still remember first hearing about Morrowind. I was psyched. I just loved the idea and although I was at the tail end of my glorious PS1 RPG days, Elder Scrolls III was one of the reasons I got the Xbox. In fact, it was the reason (yes, over Halo). But I will always remember putting it in, playing for hours, and never feeling...well, what I thought I would feel. It was hard to pinpoint, which is why I kept at it. I just thought, "well, it's different; you gotta get used to it." But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get past the following: it just felt bland. I know that sounds insane, considering the size and scope of such a production, but it's the only way I can describe it. The landscape, the story, the characters, the combat...it was all just so...bleh. And it's not even the atmosphere; I actually prefer that style to the anime presentation in most JRPGs. So that's not it.
Then I tried again with Oblivion, but the same thing happened. And despite all this, I know I'll try again when Skyrim shows up. It's inevitable, especially after drinking in all the intriguing details. Something inside says, "WTF is wrong with you? This was designed with you in mind!" I've never tried to like something more and came away so unfulfilled. No, I don't get it. But that's the way it is.
PS3 exclusives tops in 2011...? I'll buy that
When analyst Jesse Divnich mentioned that the 2011 exclusive lineup for the PlayStation 3 might be among the best ever, I started to think about what the year offered. The list really is out of control but once again, it seems to me as if the PS3 exclusives will once again set the bar. People can call me biased if they wish, but I think the games speak for themselves. In 2008, nothing topped MGS4, and I also think LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles and Resistance 2 contributed to putting Sony ahead of the pack. In 2009, it was all about Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but we can't forget about Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Killzone 2, inFamous, and Demon's Souls. In 2010, we had Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5, God of War III, MAG, White Knight Chronicles and Yakuza 3. 2011: Killzone 3, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, inFamous 2, Resistance 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, MotorStorm: Apocalypse...yeah, you see a quality trend, here.
Honestly, while Blu-Ray, reliability, and a free Network are pluses, PlayStation has always been about the games. Plain and simple.
Personal gaming update
I put over 43 hours into Brotherhood and did everything I wanted to do. Rome 100% renovated, all memories (even the optional ones) at 100%, all Treasures and Borgia Flags obtained, and I also had a personal goal of having an entire team of full Assassins, which was the last thing I did...takes longer than you think. I tried and hated that filthy load, Splinter Cell: Conviction, as most of you know, and I love to toy around with NBA Jam here and there. Currently, my big game is Fable III; here are some thoughts, if anybody is interested-
I like it and I don't like it. While it does have many of the role-playing elements I crave, it's just yet another example of "RPG lite," believe it or not. I wasn't expecting this from such a series, especially after playing the original, but it happened. Now, I can only equip one spell at a time (oh yes, that's RPG like 'rolling eyes'), nothing I wear matters (i.e., your equipment/outfits have no bearing on your capabilities), and you have no stats. Seriously. Your weapons and spells get better the more you use them, and you gain a certain form of experience in the form of Guild Seals (which are then used to unlock ability chests), but that's about it in terms of battle-related RPG elements.
On the plus side, there are big areas to explore, towns, a cool traveling system, and of course, that patented "social" flair, where you have to try and forge relationships with NPCs (provided you want to be Good). You can go on dates, get married, have sex, have kids, get divorced, become someone's best friend, etc. It's all done by doing simple fetch-and-retrieve quests that would be mind-numbingly annoying if it weren't for the fast-travel option. I've already had a kid, but it's hardly as dynamic as it sounds. For instance, I can kiss a complete stranger directly in front of my husband (I picked the female heroine; not sure why), and it won't matter. It's all just random, really. And by the way, the game chugs horribly sometimes; I haven't seen slow-down this bad in years.
The game is fun, but you know, it's like I said: the streamlining of gameplay and eradication of RPG depth for the sake of wider appeal. It fights like an action/adventure game and it's set in a role-playing theme. I like it...but it may very well be that Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls might be the last true RPGs in existence.

I'm having similar thoughts on Castlevania, it started cool, then I was like "Why am I playing this still?" but after about chapter 5 it really picks up and starts to go back in a "Castlevania-y" direction. I'm on chapter 9 now and it just keeps getting better and better.
I've decide to try Enslaved again on hard to see if it's better, and it is. I'm still upset that it is so damn short and that the story had potential for greatness, but that potential was squandered at every opportunity. I keep thinking, "what if this was PS3 exclusive?" Ironically, I'm positive it would have sold more than it being a multiplat. Not to mention having the ability to be longer and without the many hiccups and technical issues.
I kind of figured Fable III would be a pile after reading info on it. That series had promise in the first iteration, but they seem to be making it worse like most games this gen. I bet that one was rushed so 360 could have SOMEthing to put out there.
I just bought Prince of Persia (the cell shaded one not forgotten sands) for 9 bucks on ebay. Hope I like it.
Let's all pray Last Guardian arrives this year!

bought xmen that was fun nostalgic times. had my kid play some kung fu live and she loved it. that was fun to watch her. bought sonic 4 and that is hard. harder than the old school ones are.
i found this really sweet face plate for my ps3. it has gt5 on it. makes it look custom.
i also scored resistance: fall of man for $7 and started playin through that again

PGU: Still plugging away at GT5. I have over 296 cars and 8.5 million credits now. I'm at level 28 V-Spec and 19 B-Spec. I've also started a new game of Final Fantasy XII. I said last night in the other thread, I've only gotten past the first hour or so of the game and I'm already enjoying it more than Final Fantasy XIII. I also picked up Resistance 2 and The Sly Cooper Collection today to add to my back log. I never finished the first Resistance game but I read the synopsis and watched most of the cut scenes to get caught up on the story. :) I got bored with the first game so I never finished it but I have heard a lot of great things about the second game and the third looks interesting enough to warrant a play through of the rest of the series.

I beat SC: Conviction. For what it's worth the story get's pretty emotionally charged with some neat Hollywood style moments. And I thought Sam breaking into Third Echelon and destroying it was pretty awesome. While I came away disappointed with the gameplay changes, I did come away liking Sam and the story more.
I'm always working on ME2. I love it. I don't think I could ever review it because the game causes me to like it more than a game should.. I don't understand it. I know I'd be biased trying to critique it so I'm better off being a fan rather than think critically about it--I don't want to find reasons to not like it.
But some awesome missions are for "The Justicar," plus her loyalty mission. I also thought "Archangel" had a cool loyalty mission. And recruiting "The Assassin" was quite cool as well. I love it.

Oblivion was good, but the thing that I disliked about it was that it was so directionless. The main campaign didn't really grab me, and while I had some fun running about the countryside killing randoms and finding more quests, in the end it felt empty. That didn't stop me putting more than two hundred hours into over four different sve files though... I must have enjoyed something about it to be able to do that.
Ha! Anyone who says that anything can touch the PS3 exclusive line-up this year is deluding themselves. Although RE: Revelations for the 3DS sounds like it's going back to a focus more akin to the earlier games. Frightfest. Makes me want to hear more about REPSP. But no, the PS3 can sate almost any desire this year.
Personal Update:
Getting absolutely destroyed in Demon's Souls, and loving it. Although fighting through two black skeletons to get to Abjudicator, only to be killed in one hit was devastating. Also still grinding away at VC2, I'm in August now, so... getting there, and I'm about halfway through Middlemarch. The novel is awesome, but for some reason, I'm not really getting the inclination to read it while I'm at home. That still leaves about an hour and a half every weekday on the way to work, and the lunchbreaks. Actually, since I'm a bit sick of games at the moment, I might read that for the rest of the afternoon.
Peace.

Taking a break from GT5 this week. I've been messing around with Valkyria Chronicles on the PSP - which is teh awesome. I upgraded my PS3's HDD to a 500GB from WD, a nice AV-25 which is a special version of their 500GB drive that's got 32MB of cache, uses less power and has a bunch of additional features designed to support use in applications that require long term reliability and high levels of data integrity. It's only a 5400 RPM drive, by it feels twice as fast as the 320GB Hitachi I removed. That Hitachi had also proven to be very vulnerable to corruption problems. If you are in the market for a good 500GB drive in a PS3, look at Western Digital's 500GB drives, specifically the AV-25 range.
Also replaced the video card in my PC, the PC is going on 6 years old now, it's a dual core P4, and the cheap card int eh system died. So I replaced it with a modern, and slightly less cheap one. The PC is a workhorse, and the card is awesome. Not quite a new leas of life, but definitely an improvement. The card is an Asus GT 430 with 1GB of RAM. It replaced an ancient and sucky 7300GS, so it's quite a step up.
Also upgraded the Internet this week, and now have 8 times the bandwidth. Thank goodness for Cable.
I've been rebuilding the PS3's installed games all week long, and put White Knight Chronicles in again. I love this game, not enough to guild level grind for months, but enough to get a few more guild ranks.
Also for some reason this week I was looking up classical music in my favorite RPGs and a couple of pieces from Xenosaga reminded me of why I love that game, so a replay is in order....

Yeah, but did you read the "eyes-on" reviews of those glassesless TVs? They have very narrow viewing angles and small sweet spots where the 3D works, if you move your head, or tip it at an angle or anything like that, the illusion of 3D disappears.
I think the most promising tech in the medium/long term is the polarized lens tech because it's easy and inexpensive to manufacture the glasses, and not significantly more expensive to make the TVs. The tech will get better, and ultimately short of holographic display viewable from a range of angles without loss of 3D, it's the best there is right now.

I have a few friends with cable and my dsl works better than their cable.
I did a bunch of research and which one works better is more dependent on your circumstances than anything else. If you have old phone lines for instance that can really slow down your dsl.

What's the best way to transfer my data from the 500gb HDD in my Slim to the new drive? I'm going to put the new drive in my slim and my old Seagate drive with less cache in my 60gb. Will the typical back up and restore in the PS3 System settings suffice?

There's a data transfer utility that lets you move everything from a PS3 to a new PS3, so you could simply put the new drive in your other PS3 and swap identities - so to speak. Your best bet might be a USB drive for a backup, but that does take a long time. You can't simply clone the drive though. In my case my Hitachi was dying so I removed everything except my game saves and used the backup utility. With only game saves the backup and restore took less than 3 minutes. But then I had to re-download/re-install everything.

...uh-huh. Never bought that for a second, especially when most of that "freedom" from a literary standpoint was an illusion.

I wished I hadn't put off doing everything in AC:Brotherhood before I had to sent it back to get "Mass Effect 2" from Gamefly. But I've been playing NBA 2K11 and NHL11 a lot since getting them for Christmas. Right now I'm playing RDR: Undead Nightmare saved a couple of towns, saved couple of town folks but I haven't shot Big Foot yet tho..
As for 2011: All I know I'm sending any game I currently have out two weeks ahead when any of these exclusives come out so I can get my chance to get it on day one when Gamefly makes them available.

Bayonetta: the battle system is pretty damn great! story sucks balls. Even on the 'better' 360 version im playing (still waiting to get my new ps3 for my birthday) its not exactly the best looking game ever, not that anyone said that when it came out. Screen Tearing isn't something i normally dock points on but geesh, there's so much on this game its bad
Otherwise, if you have been avoiding it because of the shoddy porting that a lot of people reported, id still suggest giving it a try since it can be gotten dirt cheap now. The fighting system more than makes up for the horrible story, at least imo

PGU: I finally relented and bought into PS Plus just after Xmas (using a $50 PSN card I basically got for free), so I've been playing a bunch of the games I got from PS Plus.
Most of the week was spent on the DC Universe Online beta, about which I can't say anything at least until next week.
I've also been playing Sam & Max, which is fairly good, though it's running like crap on my PS3. Pretty much every line of dialogue is marred by stuttering. For whatever reason, the streaming from the HDD isn't working right.
I should be getting to MAG sooner or later, though of course I'll be capped at level 8.
Aside from the PS Plus games, it's all been Rock Band as usual. I got Green Day Rock Band (again, essentially for free thanks to $25 gift cards I get for buying food), so I've been working through it.

but i just cant, every time i turn that game on it just frustrates me and reminds me how disappointed i was when i first popped it in.
i hope AC3 rejuvenates the series, and please for the love of god ubisoft get rid of those stealth missions!
this is assassins creed not splinter cell!
finally got a chance to play the RDR DLC last thursday, and am really disappointed by it.
i thought i would never tire of blowing zombies heads off, hell ive been playing L4D every day since it released!
but its just boring, cant put my finger on it but i dont enjoy mowing down hordes of zombies like i do in L4D or even dead rising.
the missions are typical R* missions, i dont know whats happened to R* this gen but they have gone all anti fun on me!
why does every game they release have to be boring as bat sh*t?
GTAIV was a whole taxi mission, RDR was also a whole taxi mission, the RDR DLC most of the missions have you wondering around looking for parts.
i thought this was red dead redemption, not find the ingredients 5!
since when is wondering the desert for a hour trying to find 5 desert sage and 5 snowball drops for a stupid so called cure fun?
the games completley turned on its head too, you have to go out and search for those ingredients but your constantly swarmed by zombies.
no matter how many you kill theres still more trying to kill you.
so how the %$#@ are you suppose to collect the items if your spending 100% of your time killing zombies?
i kill them, theres none in sight so i bend down to grab the sage and all of a sudden 10 magically spawn next to me and i die.
oooooo joy now i get to do it all again!
i also finally got a chance to play tomb raider the guardian of light, im so far really impressed with it reminds me of the old original tomb raiders, mostly focused on puzzles and getting around instead of combat which the previous titles have.
makes me think crystal dynamics has finally realized what made lara fun and gives me hope the reboot will be all it should be.
I even downloaded the enslaved DLC to try and see how the 3D is done.
well, poorly!
honestly, i cant tell the difference between 3D and 2D!
out of all the games i have played this has by far the worst 3D effects.
batman AA GOTY edition on the other hand is not bad, which is really weird considering it uses the same tech as enslaved.
I just hope developers give us better 3D effects in games this year, than what we have been getting.
most games have a added depth, the picture starts at the TV than everything else seems to be behind it which is kinda cool.
but i was expecting it to be like the cinemas, where you have heaps of sh*t flying out of the TV and at your face!
but so far no game has given me that, the closest i got was motorstorm 3D rift and the smoke which does not fly out of the TV but kinda just cascades around the screen.
I was expecting it to be like PC games, go play metro 2033, mafia 2, BFBC2, batman AA in 3D than play a ps3 game in 3D the difference is outstanding!
the PC has a much greater depth, and has plenty stuff flying out of the screen!
thats the only reason i bought batman GOTY edition, so i can compare the 3D on the ps3 version to the 3D on the PC version and its like night and day!
comparing the PC version to the ps3 version is like comparing a Ferrari to a Suzuki, no competition!
Hopefully motorstorm apocalypse and KZ3 will change that, but ATM im seriously starting to regret buying my HX800!
sure i needed a new TV, but i could of saved 1200 bucks and bought a better TV with better picture quality if i knew the 3D would be this poor!
even with movies its the same thing, tried resident evil afterlife 3D, shreck 3D and allice in wonderland 3D and the effects off the TV are no where near as good as the cinema!
the guy at sony told me they would be exactly the same.
sigh, sony lying to there customers again!
from now on i am not believing a word from sony, they could tell me the sky is blue and i would race outside just to make sure.

Also, although I haven't played AC2 or Brotherhood, I don't see how you could complain about stealth missions. I mean, an assassin is NOT supposed to be blatant about what they're doing. It springs to mind that they are like less capable ninjas than anything else. But then, I like the idea of stealth in any game.
Peace.

ACB is not built for stealth, you cant have a stealth game in a wide open area like ACB.
theres a reason why stealth games like MGS or splinter cell are much more confined.
ACB does not give you the info you need either, its nigh on impossiable to see where everyone is at once, you dont have enemy awareness meters, almost everything stealth games give you is missing in ACB.
but the thing that pisses me off most is a game thats not suppose to be stealth ACB is stealth, but a game that is suppose to be stealth conviction is not.
when will developers stop taking my favorite series and completely changing them?
whats next?
god of car?
mario tetris?

I was doing ACB earlier and actually saying to my self that the stealth missions is where it shines and needs more of it. I agree with Lawless.
Also, i think ACB initiates stealth fairly well, hence why i think it shines there, especially when you have a brotherhood and you're dangling from a ledge with a group of guards overhead and then you whistle, commencing a surprise attack on them. Utterly satisfying.

There's a mini map in the top corner. Red dots are guards or people you can kill. Special targets also have a special symbol. On that map and the actual person has an arrow or sybol above their head.
"you dont have enemy awareness meters"
Yes you do. If someone is paying attention to you or looking for you, there is a mini meter above their head that starts to fill yellow. If they see you and are attacking you, the symbol is red. What you say is simply 100% untrue.
"almost everything stealth games give you is missing in ACB."
That's not true at all. Neither are the previous two points you made in that sentence. You're either just making stuff up, or you're absolutely awful at this game. I have had zero problems being stealthy. You just need to be patient and precise.

PGU: I have finished Heavy Rain a week back, pure amazingness. I was working on 3D Dot Hero Game for a while but Demon's Souls stole life away.

Needless to say i get excited about RPG's now, like dragon age and the elder scrolls. Its not tp say they are the best, its just that woth out oblivion i dont know that i would respect the genre like i do today. Like i said ive always enjoyed, just never got the experience i do now from them.
So its obvious im excited for the new entries in both dragon age and the elder scrolls. Which reminds me though, i need to finish dragon age and the expansions.

Have given GT5 a break for a while, bought FFXIII collectors edition and Far Cry 2 collectors edition cheap in the Xmas sales. Also have got Enslaved and ordered Nier.
I've been hooked recently on the Nier soundtrack. It is really one of the most brilliant pieces of music this generation. That's made me intrigued to play the game. The music is pure art.
Enslaved is good so far after an hour but I can honestly see why it is a solid 8 and not a 9. I looking forward to the story though.
Far Cry 2 is good but I'm getting spoilt with recent graphics and AI. Far Cry 2 doesn't hold up with age well.
So spoilt with choice so lots to play before I get my hands on Mass Effect 2. Really looking forward to that one.
Living in Queensland Australia. Had a month of solid rain which has flooded an area the size of Britain!
Drove through a flooded road tonight to get home and was lucky to not be swept away. Scary with two kids in the back seats! Makes you think about the real important things in life!

The Spells were also really cool.
The visuals and the quests are ughh..
Great game but I'd stay away from most of the fetch quests unless you really want to finish ending C, (Replay Value is good too with 3 endings and some extras in the storyline aswell)

as for 2011, i have already decided only to buy exclusives on day 1. not enough cash but if i finally find a job then this goes out the window. games that i guarantee i'm getting is littlebigplanet 2, killzone 3, uncharted 3, resistance 3, and infamous 2 so far.
PGU: right now i'm working on sly collection. platinumed 1 and 2, now working on 3. i cant believe i dismissed this as a kiddie game. I'm supposed to be playing bioshock 2 but it just didnt hook me in so thats been put back in the shelf. also need to get back to demons souls. i also started getting back to sports champions. so far i've only played pingpong and working my way up on the gold level. other than that i've been playing black ops on and off when i'm not playing sly collection.
My backlog is also starting to grow. i just picked up castlevania for ps3 for 20 bucks. so now my backlog consists of enslaved, castlevania, assassins creed brotherhood, and star ocean the last hope. judging by how sly collection is going and littlebigplanet next week, it looks like i wont be able to put a dent into my backlog until after i beat killzone 3 on hardest difficulty and maxing out online. at least i have some games until uncharted 3 comes out.
by the way, does anyone know where i can get FF7 and star ocean last hope strategy guides cheap? i barely use them but its kind of what i do with rpgs now. i have to have the guides with games. i missed getting these two. i got them for ff8-13, dragonquest 8, white knight chronicles, star ocean till end of time, and all the zelda games on home consoles.

It's just typical. I feel I don't need another game for months, yet it's going to be my busiest few weeks ever; LBP2, Dead Space 2 & KZ3 cannot be ignored. I've got to either stop working or sleeping if I'm to fit all this in :)

And I also think it's a get out clause with the "invent your own story with all this freedom we are giving you"

Do you know how the qwerty keyboard came about?
People in the 1800's were typing to fast on their typewriters. So rather than making a better built typewriter the main company who built them re-arranged the keys, placing the more common keys in harder to reach locations. QWERTY was born. This effectively slowed peoples' words per minute. Thus, reducing hardware failures...
It's was an earlier case in history that reminds us why businesses don't always have consumers best interests in mind first.
..sorry, i had some time to kill. Interesting, tough, eh?

I realize now I didn't write my point very clearly, but I'm sure people will figure it out.
They also taught me that the terms "debugging," "buggy software" or "there's a bug in it" was in reference to an old style computer (more like a calculator) from many decades ago that stopped operating correctly because a moth had died inside of the computer unit. From that point on they had to make certain the unit was "debugged" for proper operation.
History was made =)

The way I see it, it's just personal preference. And there's nothing wrong with that. I am rather glad though that you do not dismiss the games as rubbish because that would be a mistake. As big a mistake as dismissing jrpgs because you don't like the occasional grinding that is required.
RPGs come in all shapes and sizes. You're not going to like ALL of them, right?

My name is qwerty just because I was trying to find a username that wasn't taken before and some variation of this username was available. Hence why all my logins are qwerty now!
@Alienage - i think you have pretty much summed it up well. I don't really like sandbox games like GTA or InFamous (although I gave InFamous a good go.) I just end up getting bored. But I can definitely see why a lot of people like them!

InFamous, on the other hand, I found to be less about wandering, and collection, and more about pacing and action. The only drawback to it is that you don't get all your main powers until midway through, and you don't get all your powers until closer to the end. A lot of people didn't like it because they were expecting something like Hulk:Ultimate Destruction. But, I loved it.

Haven't had time to use my christmas money yet but I plan to get Vanquish and try to save money for KZ3, the trailer was pretty damn good. Although we can't guarantee that this one will have some groundbreaking storyjust because of some deeper dialogue than swearing. (the voice acting for the helghast is incredible, ISA pales in comparison to greatness that is Malcolm Mcdowell).
Now while this will contradict me trying not to be hyped for the story, I do wish Guerilla would try to flesh out more of Helghast lifestyle. It would be pretty sweet to meet unhostile helghan citizens, rebels, or helghan working class...c'mon the entire PLANET cannot be ecstatic to go to war. They're very close in comparison to humans from earth you know.
Well a definite purchase, Crysis 2 can wait if it's any good. Concerning Skyrim, a more than likely purchase aswell (that fall season is pretty crowded though)

The mere thought about starting over from scratch on Demons Souls is just....to depressing :P
So my recent days have been playing Bad Company 2 :) Which is way fun! Totally forgot how good MP is!

Some good youTube videos can show you how. You only need it to work for an hour or two!
It's worth a shot to save your save files, right?!

I just finished Halo 3. I started Split Second and am about half done but for some reason on racing games I refuse to get anything but first so it is taking awhile. Also, still playing AC:B here and there along with Fable 3, GT5, Alan Wake, Ace Combat 6, Metro 2033, and zombies on Black Ops with my kid. I think I'm going to dedicate my time to Castlevania over the next week to see if I can get that done. Like many of you have said it starts slow so I put it on the shelf but I have an itch to play it.
BTW: About how long does it take to complete Castlevania?

But a question popped in my read when I was reading your thoughts on skyrim and the other elder scrolls games. You said that they were deseigned with you in mind, but what if THAT'S that problem you have with them? what if that's the "eh" factor for you?
It very well could be that its a culmination of everything you want in a good rpg, just that for some reaso, everything rolled into one just does it for you? Remember that's just a thought, it could be something other than that.
And like someone said higher up, you can't like 'em all. Anyways, keep up the good work sir.
