Ben's Week In Review: January 30
I think we're all a little NGP'd out, so I'll bypass that for this Week in Review.
We don't always have to be so serious
There's nothing wrong with taking your hobby seriously, but we often have to remind ourselves that a "hobby" - almost by definition - should be a satisfying, relaxing distraction. If we take things to seriously and get too competitive and too emotional, we inevitably lose a hefty chunk of that all-important "fun factor." This is why I have no problem indulging in something silly and over-the-top, like the upcoming Duke Nukem Forever. Game of the Year? Unlikely. But so what? It's The Duke! That professional fan-made movie really did remind me of a simpler time, and the awesome Return of the King trailer got me all pumped up. Kill stuff. Be a bad-ass. Chase the hotties. Come on; it's the classic old-school video game hero! We don't always need to be so darn serious; guilty pleasures have their places, too.
By the way, same goes for Bulletstorm. Better than KZ3? Nah. A stress-reliever that puts a sadistic little smile on my face? Yep. The latter will likely grow tiresome faster than a masterpiece like Killzone 3 but simple stress-relievers aren't supposed to be 10 hours in length. For just a few hours, you occasionally need to vent. So enter DNF and Bulletstorm, and don't apologize for it. Admit your indulgence!
Looks like Dragon Age II is my next RPG
We've learned that the Dragon Age sequel will feature 103 minutes of cut-scenes, which obviously means there's a fantastic emphasis on story. That shouldn't come as any real surprise if you're familiar with BioWare; Mass Effect 2 wasn't really my thing, but it's clear this particular developer enjoys creating complex, fulfilling storylines. And in the Dragon Age setting, I should really be able to appreciate it more. I've been moving along in Hyperdimension Neptunia (review coming soon) and while I won't give anything away just yet, I will say it's not really doing it for me. And I really loved Origins; the only reason I never finished it was because I got sidetracked, and I hate it when that happens.
And you know, it's so odd that cut-scene length has plummeted over the years. When CGI/FMV was all the rage in the original PlayStation and PS2 eras, it was all about story-telling through that amazing new medium; I think we all remember some of the FFs and oh yes, Xenosaga. But these days, with technology the way it is, we can have something like God of War III and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, where the non-interactive sequences look basically the same as the interactive parts. ...never though we'd see the day, huh?
Personal gaming update
Well, for now, it's all about GT5 and Dead Space 2, which is really great. I still don't like the plot as much as I did in the original title (more mysterious in the latter), but the atmosphere and action is always, always intense. Visceral knows how to keep you on your toes; they never let the game get too predictable, and the scariest part is the fact that you have no idea what's coming next. As for GT5, I got to see the credits just because I won the Gran Turismo World Championship but obviously, there's a ton left to do. I'll play it on and off in between other games, certainly. By the way, I used my favorite car, the Lexus LF-A; after doing everything to it, it's a 700HP, 225 m.p.h. beast with ridiculous acceleration. Of course, winning that event nets you the Bugatti Veyron that, after upgrading, sports like 1200HP, but I just love the look of the LF-A. If I was rich, that's the car I'd have. :)
Attention PSXE readers- As a side note, we're going to try starting up something new for the site, and as part of it, we're going to be answering reader questions. So, if you have something you want me to answer, you can either post your question below in the Comments (don't worry, I'll see it), or you can send it to me via e-mail. I can't talk about this new endeavor just yet, but we'll be starting it this week and hopefully, you'll see it all come to fruition soon. Thanks. :)

PGU: Finished Bioshock 2 tonight. It was awesome. I really think they stepped the storytelling up in 2.
Also, I think I broke my son of his COD addiction because he been playing Bioshock 1 which I hope will continue to push him to branch out and play other games/genres.
Next, I think I will finally continue on with Castlevania and then finish Split Second. By that time it should be about KZ3 time so it looks like GT5 and AC:B will be pushed backed a little farther.

I like that there are still games like DNF and Bulletstorm coming out that hark back to the early days of the industry when it was about amusement over immersion. I think that DNF at least will hit my want list, but Bullsetstorm thus far has not shown me anything overly impressive. I do still like a focus on story in my games, and it looks as though Duke will have at least some vestige of a plot that will make me want to keep playing, other than the insanity. And it should after thirteen years in development.
I still have to get around to putting time into Dragon Age: Origins: Ultimate Edition. I'm sure that I'll enjoy it, but with the announcement of DLC set to release on release day, I feel cheated. So, I'll wait until the Ultimate Edition of it comes out as well. Although, it is strange that there are so few story-progressive cutscenes in most games. With the greater focus on immersion, and a clear desire to bring games to the same sized audience as films, you'd think that devs would want to put in a story that really makes you care about the characters, but alas, no. Too bad really.
Personal Update:
Finished my first playthrough of Demon's Souls yesterday. I liked it, but found that it was becoming trying towards the end. I posted my review of it, so... yeah. Now I'm playing Dead Space to get amped for DS2. I'm only playing it after dark to get the most out of it, which means that any daytime playtime (that's... not right) is going to GT5.
Also playing a wee bit of VC2 now and again. I should be able to get more into it again now that it's the only RPG I'm focussing on.
Still reading Middlemarch, and that's pretty much it, except for this girl at work who's sending me mixed messages. 'Tis doing my head in, but you don't need to know about that.
Peace.
P.S. It would probably be a bit more helpful to give us some idea of this new 'endeavour' so that we would have an idea of what questions to ask... But I've got one anyway: Where's the Insomniac interview???

This is probably gonna sound stupid, but you're looking for game-related questions, right? No personal questions.
The only thing I've been curious about is Twisted Metal. Do you have new updates or info? How far along is Jaffe in the development process?

Hey PSXE staff, what I have is not really a question, it's more like a suggestion. There are very many people who post on the main site that don't post in the forums. I like a lot of them, after all, we all have at least one similar interest. Would it be possible to add to the User CP so that we could send messages to users, much like the CP in the forums? I don't know if this is possible with the software you use for Comments, but I think it would strengthen the PSXE community.

Playing Mass Effect 2 when I can, but I'm not as into it as I thought I would be. I hope it grabs me eventually. Maybe it's just the poor acting by Mr. Shephard, maybe this sci fi environment isn't for me, it's hard to say. I'll still be pushing onward though. My gaming time has been cut tenfold so maybe it's just that I can't sink much time in each time I play.
My questions are simple, when will PSXE readers march on Hollywood to stop the blatant exploitation of our entertainment venue? Also, can you mention me in your video game book? And when will you pay me to write game fanfics n'stuff?

So my PGU would be still enjoying every bit of ME2 and trying to delay the inevitable end for as long as possible. Seeing now how much I really love rpg's compared to other genres it makes me seriously ask myself why I bother buying other genre games at all. They are all just thrown away as soon as I'm past the initial curiosity.

Though, I'm already convinced it's something I want. I just don't know exactly when that'll be and it won't be during it's launch window.
I enjoyed the Bulletstorm demo. It reminded me a lot of older gen PC FPS games like Serious Sam. It's just straight up intense crazy shooting fun.
And what's with the Ninja Gaiden 3 news? "Old and outdated" gameplay?
By erasing it's important identity, being a hardcore action gamer's game, it'll lose the very thing that has made the series so outstanding in my mind and I'd imagine also by those who know what makes games of this nature so incredibly satisfying.
PGU: I'm upset that my ME2 save files got entirely deleted when I restarted my game by importing my character into a new play session--couldn't they have given me a prompt? I wanted to start ME3 off with that file instead of the one where I'm this ruthless self centered renegade. argh! Maybe there's a way to retrieve it.....
Anyway, I'm enjoying playing T6 online and running various races on GT5 and, when I have the tolerance, I'm playing NGS2 on Master Ninja. That Armadillo was a complete nightmare... why do I do this to myself?

So i think his comments have been just made to incite attention. Sure, Team Ninja is not going to let the series stagnate, but I don't think he's willing to throw away the brand name, either.
Especially with Itagaki releasing the Devil's Third (or Itagaki's "Third" as it were not counting DOA's), Hayashi knows that although Tecmo retains the name of the franchise, Itagaki's going to do everything to take everything else back including the formula, and the fans.

What is reassuring though is when asked if NG3 will be "easy", he replied, "No it won't be easy, but more accessible".
As for my PGU: Playing through DS2, and ME2. I have been procrastinating getting a wheel for GT5, so I have to do that. ME2 is still fun, even though it's my 3rd time, through. Still a lot of stuff I haven't seen. DS2 is the first piece of entertainment media, out of both games and movies, that has made me jump in years. And I say that as a 32 year old.
Temjin001
Sunday, January 30, 2011 @ 6:21:40 PM
Master Shams, I wish I had your optimism for NG3. There's a number of comments he's made that suggests he's uprooting and rebooting the game play in a way that cares little for the sensitivities of the hardcore. If he was interested in preserving the hardcore fans he would've formed his statements more carefully. Instead, he's flat out saying that the NG you know is old and I'm going to bring you the new more accessible version. Possibly it's just bad translation but it's not re-assuring.

Really, if the majority of premium gaming culminates into being all show and semi-deep play going forward, I see myself playing less popular games because of skepticism.
Maybe someday I'd have the time and resources to make a game site that focused purely on the dedicated gamer's games that valued depth and complexity over presentational flair.

Been playing through AC: brotherhood alot on and off. I like it but i think i was having more fun with AC2. It could be just me but im finding alot of the CORE memories in AC: brotherhood annoying and always getting desynchronized, i do think the mission could have been structured a little better for the player. Still enjoying it and having fun in any case.

Regarding Duke and other retro-games, or games that rely more on slick gameplay and fun than on impressive graphics and multi-player addiction. I agree, we do need the kind of unashamed fun, politically incorrect humor and mayhem that games like Duke Nukem can bring.

ARGH! I thought I had this figured out, all I had to do was hit Guild Rank 7 and I would have access to some cool armor and be able to max out my GeoRama stats and get the special armor sets. Re-birthing my character is a perk along the way. HA! The GeoRama itself has to be level 7 which will take about a quarter of a million gold to achieve. I don't want to think about how long it will take me to get to that amount of gold. I really don't. This game has me hooked on getting to the needed Georama level, but my god, it's ridiculously difficult because of the time required.
Oh, and a question, what kinds of question do you mean? Questions about upcoming games or games already here? Questions about the site? Questions about life the universe and everything?

only thing thats disappointed me is wheres all the boss battles?
i was expecting some huge grotesque monsters to kill, but so far ive only seen one which has shown up a few times.
the game needs way more bosses!
ive had this niggling feeling throughout the whole game that they have held back a little just to keep it a little less hardcore.
i knew that was going to happen, because in every interview they kept mentioning that they did so much research and allot of people said they did not finish the original because it was too scary or too hard.
disappointing, i just cant help but feel the game has been held back to cater to the casual.
like the battles, theres never really a massive ambush you get a few enemies chasing you, but its never really oh sh*t im really overrun here!
they just needed to get it that bit further, add heaps more enemies and add in heaps more bosses and it would of been the perfect game!
i get that nagging feeling too in the horror aspect of the game.
the Nichole visions are such a missed opportunity, they could of made those really mind bending and scary, but all she does is just stare at you!
its a shame, i just cant help but feel they could of taken it so much further!
still a fantastic game, but just fell slightly short of its potential because of a fear of alienating their market.
come on visceral, for DS3 please go all out this time!!!!!!!!!
seriously, screw dantes inferno 2, i want that as much if not more than the next guy.
but seriously screw that, just get onto making DS3!

Tastes change as we grow. For instance, I don't dig holes in the back yard and play in the dirt as often as when I was younger. I'm noticing that video games are becoming less and less a part of my life. Do any of you ever think that there will come a day when you don't play them anymore?
Lawless SXE
Sunday, January 30, 2011 @ 5:07:21 AM
I think... Yes, there will come a day. Or maybe not it being cut out of my life entirely, I'm far too invested in the hobby for that, but I am most certainly expecting a drop-off in my interest over time. I already find my time playing being reduced significantly. I used to play three or four hours a day, but now, I can't usually play past two, three at the most. As in every other facet of life, things change, interests change and fade. Ask again in another five years, and I'll tell you if anything has changed.
Peace.

Video games were non-existent for me for a while. My PS2 died in 2004, and I never bought a new console. I still had a PS1 hooked up in the basement, and I played through Dino Crisis once, but I never felt like I had to get a new PS2, or any other console for that matter.
However, I still kept up with gaming news(thanks to PSXE) and once PS3 came out, I went to my local gamestop almost every day for two weeks until they got their second shipment after launch day. I got a PS3 in December 2006, and I play just as much as I used to. I expect that will change as my responsibilities and obligations increase, but I will never lose the interest I have in gaming.

But "stress relief" is why I play games. And I think that I get a great amount of stress relief playing games like Dead Space or Uncharted....even though they are very serious.
I guess when I want to waste time playing games, I turn to the free flash games on the internet....that is some mindless downtime right there.

"RDR Undead nightmare" it's pretty fun and it has some of that Romero vibe going for it. Feels like an different game rather than a thing they just threw in. In the missions you gotta clear out zombies in towns you better keep that horse moving or find a safe place to pick off zombies because you can get overrun fast.
Another thing do your self a favor and find of one of those four horses(mythical creature) or have a zombie horse because those S.O.B don't get tired and other zombie animals can't kill it. Down size of the zombie horse is they run like they're drunk and you can run into things you don't want to run into.

Personal Gaming Update:
Still on my third play through of Dead Space 2, took a break for a while to refamiliarize myself with Super Street Fighter IV. I really hate Seth. Actually, I'm kinda hating the fact that the two big fighting games this generation (SFIV/SSFIV and Tekken 6) have SNK Boss Syndrome up the wahzoo. Azazel's worse than Seth, but I haven't played Tekken in forever.
Will be picking up Mass Effect 2 soon, and maybe Little Big Planet 2, I'm not sure about that one. Really, really, REALLY looking forward to Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
