Ben's Week In Review: March 6
Damnit, it's already March. I'm going to miss the winter. :(
I think we need a Last Guardian demo
When it was announced that Team ICO might include a demo of their new highly anticipated title in the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, some said they didn't like the idea. I completely understand this sentiment; there are just some games I'd rather go into 100% fresh. However, although I maintain plenty of faith in the developers, I continue to be concerned about one thing: the lack of gameplay information. When the team admitted they hadn't even nailed down the control concepts yet, I started to worry. And as time goes on and we continue to see and hear nothing about the actual mechanics, my skepticism grows. To be clear, I'm relatively convinced The Last Guardian will be something special; I don't mean to imply the designers are lost. I just always get a little antsy when I'm in the dark.
And a demo would really help to put my concerns to rest. Bear in mind that control in both ICO and SotC might be considered a little wonky by today's standards, and I don't want the artistic brilliance of The Last Guardian sullied by what are perceived to be old-fashioned mechanics. I really just want to see how this game will play. I think I need to see that...
Dark Souls looks pretty damn good
In contrast to the die-hard Demon's Souls fans, I maintain that From Software's great effort had a balancing issue. It was this, and not so much the inherent challenge, that turned me off of the game. But because I've heard Dark Souls will be a bit different in terms of gameplay, I've been psyched for this follow-up effort. Then I saw the new screenshots and I have to admit, I was pretty impressed. Not quite as impressed as I was when I saw the in-game footage for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but then again, the latter is an actual video. I think when we get a chance to see Dark Souls in action, we should be equally impressed. Although I've preferred some of the more brightly colored JRPGs in the past, I gotta say...the "darkness" shown in those screens really grabs me.
And in general, it's a great year for role-playing fans. I was a little disappointed in the most recent - Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel - but the best is yet to come.
Personal gaming update
I finished up Bulletstorm, and that was pretty damn fun from start to finish. The end dragged on a bit too long but hey, it's better than a five-hour campaign, right? I still have to finish Dead Space 2 but with Dragon Age II this week, I'm afraid that might not happen any time soon... I will also be getting Top Spin 4 for the same reason that football fans always get Madden. I'll try to go through Yakuza 4 but I doubt I'll have time; I am, however, anticipating a great game.
Also, remember that we'll be tossing up our second video commentary soon; it'll be for DAII. After that, maybe something new...

I agree with The Last Guardian demo too, an early taste would be great as the game itself is looking truly wonderful. More info on Skyrim & LA Noire would be nice too.
I'm still awaiting more news on Tekken Tag Tournament 2, KOFXIII & VF5:FS. The recent SkullGirls trailer is looking pretty rad too.
Lastly, regarding Yakuza 4, isn't there a zombie spin off for it coming soon?
Overall,good read.

Anyway, I will give the HD remake a good look and maybe eventually make it a buy--likewise with Last Gaurdian.
My RPG fanboy bro loved Demon's Souls. It was his personal GotY, even over Dragon Age. He lent it to me and spent a few hours with it. I liked it, but I think I can sympathize with Ben in thinking that some aspects were flawed from a design aspect. I don't like when games can inhibit your progress with trial and error obstacles where no amount of preparedness could have allowed you to succeed without dying a few times beforehand. Yet, I haven't played a whole of the game to state this with a high level confidence. It just felt that way.
PGU: I haven't been able to play much due to a business trip, but I did get some Suikoden time in. I'm sort of inching along, but I just been endowed leader of the rebel resistance.
Aside from that I'm super stoked for this year. I'll be moving near a university (as a junior) to work my way towards a BA in 3D animation and game design. So who knows? maybe one day I'll be working for a high profile game dev =)

I take it as refining my game skills and see how far i can push myself to improve my skills and knowledge of the game.
That's just my 2 cents.

I'm looking forward to Dark Souls. If I have to point out a single change that increases my interest is that it is now apparently an open-world game. The areas in Demon's Souls were quite large, and I enjoyed this, but allowing the entire world to be open from the start, and basically allowing you to explore at will is a good thing. Conversely, I am slightly worried by this. One of the most engaging elements of Demon's Souls was that each of the five worlds were distinctly different in environment and architecture. Having a single, uniform world makes me think that perhaps there won't be that same diversity, but it will instead feel more like areas are slightly modified, or rearranged versions of others.
I still think that it'll be great though.
Personal Update:
So, I finished Dead Space 2 on Tuesday. Normally, I would simply have fired up Dead Space: Extraction and punched through it to get it finished and put up my DS2:LE review.
This, clearly, didn't happen. No, my PS3 didn't YL. I got sidetracked. You see, I realised that it had taken me almost three months to read through Middlemarch, and I was finding the second-to-last book the most engaging of all so far, so I determined to finish it by this weekend. And so, I put off starting a new game of anything, and indeed playing anything at all, just so that I could focus, and I finally did finish it. And I must say that, while I found the beginning too slow, the way that so many revelations came to light towards the end redeemed it completely. I loved it.
Now, I've started reading 1984 again. I need something a bit lighter before tackling Inferno (or whatever I pick up next weekend, if I feel like reading that instead).
So, I started Dead Space: Extraction last night... not sure on how I feel about it yet. But I'm playing with the standard controller, rather than Move, so I get the feeling that this somewhat hampers my enjoyment of it.
Oh, I need to shut up.
Peace.

As far as Dark Souls...But Ben, the trailer for Dark Souls showed gameplay. All gameplay. Did you mean that you're more psyched for these particular pics and you'd rather see some vidz of that (like that giant wolf)?!
PGU: My 3's collecting dust until I get it fixed. In the meantime, I've been playing Medieval 2: Total War. Shogun 2 is dropping soon so I figured that I'd practice a lil' on Creative Assembly's older title. Having fun.

My PGU,
My Intellivision 1 & Intellivision II consoles just came in today, along with 26 games, and 3 of the new styled direct RF to cable adapters(which completely bypass the old RF switch boxes altogether).
I also loaded up all the game info for Mafia 2, Aliens vs Predator, Enslaved,Wolfenstein, Army of Two:40th day, & Midnight Run: LA complete Edition, just so they'll be ready when I want to start on them.
Plus I've got Bulletstorm & a bunch of other demos already D/L'ed for my playing pleasure.
But right now, I'm not even going to attempt to hook up my 2 Intellivision's into the rest of my gaming console network, & I doubt that I'll even be playing any of those games or demo's I've listed above either, just due to the fact that every minute of my free time's being spent in my first MP mode on Killzone 3.
I've been ever so slowly ranking up, but I have managed to get me a 1/4 of a million XP in that short time so far.

Thanks for the 411, much appreciated.
I've played all 3 modes, but I've mostly hung out either, a bit in Operations, but the vast majority of my time has been spent just in Guerrilla Warfare mode.
I'll make the jump back to Warzone & see if I'm able to get my XP numbers leveled up any quicker than in G Warfare.

well i am 30 min away from beating the 24 hours of le mans. 412 laps so far. i am gettin close to having all the races done. then i will have to do the licenes and special events. when you reach level 35 bspec they give you a x2010. that thing is crazy. i let my kid drive it and she was having a blast. she even flipped it and scored me the rollover trophy.
i had a huge breakthrough in gt5 this week and passed like the wind races and scored that minolta. wow that car is bad ass. i think i will let the ps3 have some down time before i run the 24 hours ring.

PGU: well, sad story is that im feeling burned out on KZ3, so I havent really played that in a few days. I played the demo of bullet storm a few times for the sheer awesomeness of its simplicity, and I think its gonna show up on the birthday list. Didnt ever play dragon agee so i dont know if im missing anything before i play II.. can anyone tell me if its okay to play II without playing the first one? I got the demo and want to give it a try. Loaded up naild demo, and im excited to give that a whirl. I believe it was psx that mentioned how underrated it was so im stoked for that one. Have been spending alot more time watch8ing game vids and reading news more than actually playing. Getting excited for Crysis 2, MK, and some others. And thats that. oh yeah and im considering playing through back to the future for some adventure fun :D

PGU: I am on my second play through of Mafia 2, I love the game, even though it is shorter than the first, I like that they still make it more about story than anything else. It's open world, but it really shouldn't be considered sandbox as it's not about building up and running rampant, but about following the story wherever it leads. I like it.
After that I'll play through Two Worlds 2 again, I beat it and I really enjoyed all of it except for the final boss, was just a pain. I look forward to playing it again though and just running around having fun instead of focusing on the story.
I also should get Godfather 2 in the mail this week, so after my second play through of Two worlds 2 I'll be having some more mobster fun there, but in the more sandbox style. Lot of good rpg goodness for me and a lot of good gangster goodness too. Gaming has been very good lately.

really looking forward to both, TLG looks so different, and so emotional allot like heavy rain.
ICO and SOC, well, there only some of the most talked about games in the history of the industry!
im really looking forward to dark souls, i just hope they add a difficulty for us sane people.
finished bulletstorm and sold it today.
so miffed with Nvidia!
the game was suppose to be 3D compatible, 11 days after release and they STILL have not added it!
was a good game, not great because it gets really repetitive.
they needed more environments too, 99% of the levels have the barbed fence or electricity.
thats about it, needed heaps more variety!
need more weapons too!
wish they would let us scrap the machiene gun, they limit you to 3 weapons, and one is locked, and figures the most mundane, boring, useless one is the one thats locked!
theres so many cool ideas they could of done for weapons, just feels like a missed oppertunity.
thats the whole story of the game more or less, great but seriously lacking in variety!
at least its a good length, not the 7 or so hour crap KZ3 did!
thats pretty pathetic for a mundane no name shooter, but for one of the biggest releases of the year, for one of the ps3s flagship titles its, well, embarrassing!
ive bitten the bullet and gone back to restart ME2 only because it was such a good game.
that, and well de blob 2 is boring the %$#@ out of me and i have nothing else to play till DA2.
plus i really want to see how it ends, plus i really want to carry over my save for ME3 so i basically have no choice to restart.
but if i loose my save again i swear to god as my witness every employee of bioware are going to wish they were never born!

your game saves open but the profile its locked to is locked.
so stupid how they have done it, you have 1 save on the XMB and that contains all your saves.
so you can create 100000 saves, and if one of them corrupts all of them are f*cked!
could not understand why only one of my saves was showing up till i emailed EA and they told me thats why.
hope DA2 does not do this, gets annoying having to exit the game and copy your save over every hour or so in fear of loosing it.

I'm definately looking forward to Dark Souls though, didn't play Demon Souls but I couldn't be bothered jumping on it now until it comes down in price.
PERSONAL GAMING UPDATE: I picked up splinter cell Conviction and Ninja Gaiden 2 on Friday for £15!! Splinter cell is great if not quite as stealthy as I remember it to be from the old days of Pandora tommorow ;) Ninja Gaiden 2 is surprisingly good and after a while the gameplay really had me sucked in (the dialogue DID NOT lol). Its definately benficial that its more forgiving than it's predeccessor (good God that game was so hard it was borderline cruel). I still need to finish FFXIII i'm on the plains now and its great and all but i just dont have any motivation to continue other than to intentionally let monsters KILL Vanille >:)sorry but I juste hate hate hate her!

PGU: About half way through Dead Space 2: Playing it how survival horrors are meant to be played: in the dark, with headphones, after everyone's gone to sleep. Add to that I'm playing it on an HD projector, the 6ft x 3 ft picture (approx) gets me totally immersed in the atmosphere! Best survival horror I've played in a while. (Anyone else find those "exploding baby monsters" a bit gross?)
I'm definitely a fan of this genre and am looking forward to the next Silent Hill.
My next purchase is likely to be KZ3: need some high quality FPS "twitch" for those nights I've got no brain power left to get immersed into a story...

I'll keep my eye on Dark Soul's. I liked the concept of Demon's Souls and the challenge but I just couldn't get into it. The story seemed like an after thought and the graphics were kinda meh. But Dark Souls looks mucho better.
PGU: still playing Killzone 3. Have played through the campaign 4 times now. Well about to complete my 4th play through. Been playing it in 3D. It's cool but still not on par with the 3D presentation in Super Stardust HD. I Platinumed it on my 3rd playthrough. Great campaign. Better than any other FPS shooter's campaign I have played this gen with the exception of Bioshock. Also been kickin arse in the multiplayer. I downloaded the Black Ops demo, I really, really do not, for the life of me understand why anyone would prefer Call of Duty over Killzone 3 at this point. But what ever. Ha I need to finish Dead Space 2. I stopped playing it when I got Killzone 3. I don't know why. It's just not grabbing me for some reason like the first game did. Maybe because the scares just seem kind of gimmicky now. Still a cool and fun game. Just not as frightening as the first. Also been trying to get into MvC3. Meh, still prefer MvC2 and Tatsunoko vs Capcom. The graphics in 3 aren't as nice as I thought they would be and the roster is weak sauce. Oooooh, I also picked up Valkyrie Chronicles. Only $20 at Walmart so I said what the heck. So many of you here loved the game and one of my good friends who only seems to play Call of Duty loves it. Even he's spent a lot of time with the game. So I'll be diving into that one soon.
P.S. I watched that movie 127 Hours by Danny Boyle about Aron Ralston. Pretty cool movie. You guys should check it out. I remember reading about that dude's accident back in 2003 when it happened. Pretty intense.

I too want a Demo for TLG. I always prefer a demo - I've NOT purchased a lot of games I was planning on because of demos and i can't think of single case where later on that turned out to be a bad thing.
PGU: finished KZ3 using the move. Went back and started again with the DS3. Played 2 levels. Then I tried some Resistance and CoD BO. I think the Move has really destroyed my ability to enjoy shooters as much wothout it. Hoping that R3 has move support. Anyone know for sure one way or the other?
Am enjoying Deadspace (first one) a lot and can't get enough of The Show demo. I know where I'll be Tuesday ALL day! I've got DS2 waiting in the wings as well.....

I finally finished Sam & Max (5 x 100%) and Costume Quest plus Grubbins On Ice.
I made a resolution to play at least one demo each day this month and to finish at least one game each week, to cut into my enormous backlog.
I grabbed Heavy Rain after the GH price drop and will be starting it as soon as I post this comment.
Cheers, all.
