Ben's Week In Review: May 1
We're closing in...tentatively, our big announcement comes in mid-to-late May...
Altair deserves another adventure
Ezio is a confirmed bad-ass and one of my favorite characters of the generation. Altair, the hero from the first Assassin's Creed title, doesn't register on my "favorite" list but that's because he was, for all intents and purposes, faceless. At the same time, I think he was a fantastic protagonist that had a lot of potential, and another story in what may be called Assassin's Creed: Revelations is welcome in my eyes. Of course, I want a new setting but I'm sure Ubisoft will deliver just that. Oh, and as for what they're planning with the next series entry, I have a very simple yet forceful warning for the developers: you managed to create a franchise that both critics and gamers love. It sold tons of copies because they love the games.
Changing the core gameplay and structure would be disastrous. I know it's the "in" thing to do this generation but almost every time it has happened, the results have been less than impressive. In some cases, it was downright depressing. Do not mess with this particular winning formula. Make some additions and enhancements, give us a new story and environment, etc. Just don't change the foundation. Got it?
Lest we forget, Warhawk was pretty damn good
I was involved in the beta testing for Warhawk way back in the summer of 2007 and in all honesty, I wasn't looking forward to it. I really can't get into flying games and my expectations weren't high. But the instant I pressed Triangle and enabled the flight mode, I was hooked. I don't typically play online multiplayer games but I had a ton of fun with Incognito's extremely well designed and accessible title, which is why I'm intrigued by Lightbox Interactive's new project. Evidently, it's Starhawk, and the first details are awfully encouraging. I think the problem is that so few people even had a PlayStation 3 when Warhawk came out, many never played it. Hence, they're not all that excited about what should be the spiritual successor.
Well, if you're one of many who never played that great multiplayer title years ago, I'm telling you right now- pay attention to Starhawk.
Personal gaming update
I'm closing in on the end of Dragon Age II and I continue to work on Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection. It's great because there's so much I don't remember about that game (even though I replayed it when it came with Final Fantasy Chronicles on the PlayStation), so a lot of it just feels like a new old-school RPG. I've moved past the other games on my list and I now anxiously await L.A. Noire, which should be here in a few weeks time. I have a few PSN games I have to review, but...uh...those are on the back burner, obviously. On that note, however, I'm really looking forward to Trine 2 and Journey, among others.
Oh, and look for a Brink review this week. I have absolutely no expectations one way or the other; on the one hand, it looks like it has a ton of potential, but on the other, I have my reservations. We'll see.

PSN will be back up within the week since ND says next weekend will be The Lab's triple cash weekend.
I've been playing bad games looking for the rare one I enjoy. Sadly Two Worlds II was just too f*cked up for me to enjoy. It had promise though. Other than that I'm biding my time until L.A. Noire comes. I'd like to finish Ar Tonelico by then but it's slow going with all the studying and stress.

@ Ben, I dunno if it's doable but I came up with a compromise in my poll. See if your web designer can find a way to make it so in the User CP we can turn it on or off permanently. It's just that having to toggle it all the time is a pain. But it's your guys' site in any case.

There were some parts that I enjoyed about the first Assassin's Creed, such as the parkour, the graphics and the way that the Templar deaths were handled, but the game just began to grate on me before too long. I thought Altair had more to tell, and I am cautiously excited for Revelations, if that is indeed what the new AC title is. I still can't figure out a plausible explanation for sending Desmond back to Altair though, so... whatever. On a related note, this past week I ordered the complete edition of AC2, so that should arrive sometime soon, though I don't know when I'll get to it.
Never played Warhawk, though a friend swore by it. As you all know by now, I'm strictly offline, so if Starhawk has a good SP, I'll be interested. If not, a definite pass.
Personal Update:
Not sure if I let you know, but I finished up on Inferno, and am now about halfway through Purgatory. They're rather enjoyable to read, if difficult at times.
I'm determined to finish Sly 2 this weekend, which means that I really should get back to it. Though I've already done about three hours already this morning. It's bloody long compared to most modern releases. After I'm finished it, I'll take a short break to play my borrowed copy of Black Ops (Yeah, I've succumbed to the urge to see what the fuss is and will definitely post a review of the OFFLINE segment. Don't get up me when it goes live for not touching on the MP.) before going back and finishing up Sly 3 so that I can finalise my review of the Trilogy. Don't know what I'll go onto after I'm finished them... Maybe Dante's Inferno, so that the poem is relatively fresh in my mind.
Aside from AC2, this past week, I also picked up Bad Company 1&2, to see if I like the series before Battlefield 3 comes out, PoP: The Forgotten Sands, to round of the collection alongside the Trilogy (haven't decided on getting PoP '08 yet) and Siren: Blood Curse, all for the agreeable price of $114. But yeah, no more purchases until L.A. Noire and WKC2, regardless of how Brink turns out. I've got a big enough backlog as is.
Now, onto my PSP. I don't know what happened. I was playing VC2, up to November and doing Heinz's classmate mission, when all of the buttons except the ones along the bottom of the device stopped working. The peculiar thing is, in any of my other PSP games, or in the XMB, everything works fine. Now, when I put in VC2, I can't even access the title screen as I can't go past the opening 'This game saves data automatically' screen. It's frustrating. I'm inclined to think that it's a software fault on the UMD rather than anything wrong with the PSP itself. Does anyone else have any potential explanation, or suggestions as to what to do, because I want to finish that game. 70 hours+, and then this... I felt like crying.
Peace.
P.S. This comments scroll bar is a terrible idea. I know I'm not the first to say it, and I doubt I'll be the last, but what prompted you to include it?

And in both cases of the inferno, Beatrice is just a means to an end. Neither the game or the poem is really about going after her, she simply draws him in.

Aside from that, I'm real tired of the PSN stuff eating up all of the headlines. I just want this storm to pass and have gaming news flow like normal again, oh, and to have PSN back up again, too.
PGU: Okay, so I haven't been able to get my Tekken fix because of the PSN crisis. This has actually been good, as my attention has moved towards VF5:O in the meantime. In the past, I'd play VF5 online and usually get my butt trashed pretty hard, and then I'd quickly run over to Tekken and lay the smack down hard to raise my spirits back up. Hehe, well, I can't resort to that now. I just stay dedicated to VF5 and there's nothing to tempt me away. I'm beginning to get the pacing and intricacies of play more familiar and now I'm putting up more of a competitive fight. Which is good because most of the guys who are playing online feel very experienced with it. Anyway, I really hope VF5 Final Showdown sees a console side release.
Aside from that, I've been doing AC:Bro.hood. I'm taking my time having fun with the assassin recruiting and leveling. It's a neat addition. I hope in future iterations they make that element much more deep. It seems pretty surface level deep at this point, but they could go nuts with the concept if they'd like. I'd be game.

it's now 45 days since I was last able to play on my now-smashed PS3, so I decided to relegate myself to knocking down at least some of my backlog of BotBox games.
I played thru Sniper: Ghost Warrior.....twice.
Then started on The Outfit, but for some strange reason, the game threw me off the chapter I was currently in & then reset my save to 3 chapters prior, so I'd need to play them all over again just to get where I was at......I quit that game PISSED!
Then I played a few chapters of Splinter Cell: Conviction but after the parking garage scene, I got totally bored.
Then "Wanted:Weapons of Fate....bored!
Some Section 8......bored!
A bit of Velvet Assassin.... bored
Shellshock 2....bored
Halo 3....YAWN
Crackdown....bored
WarTech....hated it.
Too Human.... finally a game I'm enjoying! And already 8 hours straight through so far, and even though it seems like a hack & slash with some RPG elements(a skill/weapon/armor tree), and some areas where there an onslaught of numerous mixed enemies along with 2 big bosses to deal at the same time has been extremely hard, but I've been pressing on & I managed to reach level 12.
I especially like how the angels will come down to retrieve you & your team's bodes when you die & swoop you away............and you die a lot!
Plus I'm really digging this strange atmosphere similar to the Dues Ex's futuristic technology vibe during parts of it.
But.....I'm truly missing my one true love

NO......how insanely bored do you want me to become.
Plus I hate that wiimote, no matter how far down I play with the sensitivity setting, I still wind up spinning around too way often instead of what I really wanted to do...
Talk about virtual vertigo.
Ninty & all Wii developers should have just given us an option button to use a regular controller too.

I played a little of Warhawk when I first got my PS3 3 years ago but just never gave it a chance. I'm actually sporting the Warhawk dynamic theme right now. I was planning on picking it up again. People still are playing it right?
I can't wait for LA Noire. I've got it preordered and will have it D1. Brink I'm kind of interested about but just not sure if it'll be any good. I'll just wait for your review to find out. I also just ordered ME2 off of EA.com for $38. I played it on the 360 but I don't have a 360 anymore so I need to get a game save going for ME3.
My gaming now and from the last week has been great. I earned the platinum trophy for Uncharted 1 and Enslaved this last week. I am now working on Borderlands. This has been sitting on my shelf for quit a while. The last 2 days playing it has just sucked me in. I hope to have this platinum'd within a week or two.

The only thing i want them to change is the level up system. it was a pain to level up in the game, at least later in the game. i had to get enough xp plus get medals which frankly were pretty hard to get. i dont remember what level i stopped but thats the biggest reason i stopped playing.
PGU: with psn down i ended up beating crysis 2 on supersoldier, was so damn easy, and i'm 4 missions away from beating socom 4 on elite. it kinda pisses me off that weapon upgrades in campaign dont carry over to multiplayer. i got most of my guns maxed. i dont think it'll be any difference what guns people use in the game, leveled up or not. it just depends on how they play. from what i can see, theres not much advantages to upgrading your weapon. all i need is the sights, the rest is carrying more bullets, silencers, and grenade launchers/masterkey. i spent all that time leveling them up but all i can use it on is coop and campaign. well i should finish the last 4 missions then after that all i need is the coop/online trophies to get platinum.
i guess next up i'll either start littlebigplanet 2 or go to gamestop and borrow portal 2. i like games that make me think but i wasnt sold on portal 1 when i played it. I'm always up for giving games a second chance.

I have occasionally picked up my psp to put in some time on Dissidia 2 which I love, but when you feel like this sitting up takes a bit of effort.
So everyone enjoy a few extra minutes of game time for me until I can stop feeling like a pile of old oatmeal.

Following a criminal cyber-attack on the company’s data-center located in San Diego, California, U.S.A., SNEI quickly turned off the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services, engaged multiple expert information security firms over the course of several days and conducted an extensive audit of the system. Since then, the company has implemented a variety of new security measures to provide greater protection of personal information. SNEI and its third-party experts have conducted extensive tests to verify the security strength of the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. With these measures in place, SCE and SNEI plan to start a phased rollout by region of the services shortly. The initial phase of the rollout will include, but is not limited to, the following:
Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems
-This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
Access to account management and password reset
Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
PlayStation®Home

Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
Implementation of additional firewalls
The company also expedited an already planned move of the system to a new data center in a different location that has been under construction and development for several months. In addition, PS3 will have a forced system software update that will require all registered PlayStation Network users to change their account passwords before being able to sign into the service. As an added layer of security, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation, a critical step to help further protect customer data.
The company is conducting a thorough and on-going investigation and working with law enforcement to track down and prosecute those responsible for the illegal intrusion.

Complimentary Offering and “Welcome Back” Appreciation Program
While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, the company is committed to helping its customers protect their personal data and will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. The implementation will be at a local level and further details will be made available shortly in each region.
The company will also rollout the PlayStation Network and Qriocity “Welcome Back” program, to be offered worldwide, which will be tailored to specific markets to provide our consumers with a selection of service options and premium content as an expression of the company’s appreciation for their patience, support and continued loyalty.
Central components of the “Welcome Back” program will include:
Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.

Cranking through missions on Valkyria Chronicles 2 on the PSP, I don't have as much time as I used to for games, and this is taking a lot of time, but then again, I'm also killing the game when a mission goes badly....LOL! So it's churning up the hours.
PSN being down has put a cramp on so many things, it's actually causing me to play much less on my PS3 - sadly. Oddly enough, I miss Home.
Ah well, things come back this week. Anyone want to bet whether an indie game maker comes up with a game where you can track and terminate system hackers? I'd buy it.

I'm about 50 hours in, but I've been leveling and replaying missions, so I don't know how far into the game that translates to.
Your problem sounds annoying. Try deleting the install data from the memory stick, it will force the system to re-install, the other thing you could do is copy the game save off the card, remove if from the card, and then copy it back.
You might also want to check the disc has no damage or dirt/dust.
Only other thing I know to check would be whether the system is running the most up to date firmware.

Is it possible, do you think, that there is a flaw in the coding of the disc?

If the game would start at all I'd suggest loading an older data file, but since it's not getting that far...
I don't suppose you made any system configuration changes? Like on a PSP2000/3000 disabling the option to cache UMDs? The other possibility if of course that the UMD's read head has got dirty...cotton bud and care required...You can probably find instruction online for what and how to do it.

BUT not untill we have finished the current story arc!
its driving me nuts, we have been waiting to see what minerva was going on about since november 09!
enough is enough!
give us AC3 this year, finish up the storyline, we play as desmond finding the temples and stopping the templars.
then and only then should we see any fill in, spin off, whatever the ^%$# you want to call it!
im quite excited for starhawk, simply because everytime i played warhawk i was constantly saying oh this would make such a cool campaign!
so finally we get to see that!
only wish zipper did that with MAG, that would be freaking sweet!
now seeing that they cant put out a propper SOCOM game.................
speaking of that atrocity thats what im playing now, well that and opperation flashpoint red river.
i hate it for the exact same reason i hated dragon rising.
you can get shot from EVERYWHERE!
your kneeling somewhere so someone shoots you, so you move, so someone shoots you, so you move, so someone shoots you, so you move, so someone shoots you.
WHERE THE BLAZING HELL CANT THEY SHOOT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
gets really annoying too, you spend 40 minutes playing a mission, then die.
have fun redoing that 40 minutes all over again!
god i wish we could have manual saves back in games, im sick to death of redoing the same sh*t over and over and over and over and over again!
i love the tactical feel of opperation flashpoint, i love the openess of it, i love the heavy team reliability.
but for the love of god if were going to die so god dam easily and so god dam frequently at least give us a decent save system!
if we could save and load that save whenever we want id stick with it and finish it and probably would end up loving it.
but im sorry i dont have 30 minutes out of each hour to redo sh*t i just did!
then theres the technical side of it, i mean SOCOM 4 is not exactly contender for best looking game, but i swear to god opperation flashpoint red river LOOKS LIKE A FREAKING PS2 GAME!
WTF?
codemasters you do realize were in 2011 not 2001 right?
the ammount of pop in and jaggies is pathetic!
it has a 4GB HDD install but lord knows why because it takes so god dam long to load!
i thought the whole point of HDD installs was suppose to eliminate that!
it should be illegal to sell ps3 games in the state that its in!
your paying for a ps3 game and getting a ps2 game!
the fact that gold like uncharted 2 brand new costs the same as this junk highlights the issues of our pricing systems.
only way to stop developers turning out this junk is by limiting how much they can charge for it!
how much you want to bet the graphics, load times, bugs would all magically disappear if they were told they could only charge 50 bucks for it instead of 100 in the state its in.
funny how impossible things become possible when moneys envolved!

Personal Dreaming Update: I've more and more often found myself thinking about how one would design a mmorpg from a technical point of view. The client/server workload. And I am more and more tempted at giving it a try. Just as my personal programming challenge. A small server that can handle clients and share a persistent world with them. Damn that would be so rewarding to get to work.
Regarding Warhawk I agree that it was an extremely accessible title, easy to "pick up'n'go", intuitive. But they have to *really* buff Starhawk with features to have any kind of chance whatsoever against todays multiplayer games. Warhawk was more or less just a shameless copy of Unreal (the game, not the engine). It worked back then, but not today.

Just to make sure they don't piss some people off again the free item should be a PSN game not out yet. That way it'll make everybody happy.
Anyways can't wait to sync my trophies this week and see how far up I went.

warhawk was either my 2nd or 3rd ps3 game it was a gift from my xlady with the jabra bluetooth & man i love that game. i love warhawk so much the ps2 graohics didnt phase me or none of folks who i ganged up with for coop online. havent played it since 09 though after my lil brotha got a slim he needed some games so i letem hold the top notch games to enjoy the ps3.
look forward to starhawk & now that it has a campaign i can enjoy a story in another realm & hopefully find out why the humans are beefing with the starwar looking folks.
my gaming life hassnt been much.... i thought bout runing threw GT5 jus so i know i beat it but with this temporary ps3 i dont want to have a list of cars again & losem allover. i had the money for MK but had to take care of biz its on my list though so eventually when funds are gravy i will buy that & several other games.

The X-ray moves & fatalities are great but get old after a while, but overall i am quite surprised how easy it is to pull of combos & juggle, which i had a problem with in previous MK's.
On the horizon i am looking forward too Tekken Tag 2, AquaPazza (from the makers of Arcana Hearts), SkullGirls & Namco's 13 day announcement which most are predicting to be Soul Calibur V.
Hellz yeah.
