PSN Drama: Okay, I'm Officially Bored
All right, that's it. You've done it. Congratulations, game industry, you've given me a video game-related story I can no longer tolerate.
I love games; hence, I tend to revel in all sorts of big news, even if it doesn't necessarily appeal to my personal interests. It's just great to see video games get so much attention; for example, as indifferent as I am about Call of Duty, I really don't mind writing about new sales tallies or other hype/controversy surrounding a new title. In short, there has yet to be a super huge news story in the past four years that managed to embitter me; that completely soured me on the entire issue.
But it has finally happened. Endless headlines concerning this PSN/Qriocity/SOE fiasco continue to explode all over the Internet and as time goes on, they're loaded with more inaccuracies and more absurdities. But more than that, I just don't care anymore. This all boils down to a bunch of common pickpockets (which is all any hacker is) with massive delusions of grandeur, thinking they're patriots or humanitarians or revolutionaries or some such laughable label, committing criminal acts. Got it. Big damn deal. The planet somehow continues to turn. I'm not impressed; I'm not all that annoyed (the PSN being down has had little impact on me), and all I can do now is roll my eyes.
Really, it's all I do. I hate looking about for news now because I look, roll my eyes, and move on...only to roll my eyes again ten seconds later. Then I have to leave the desk and get a glass of water. Then after I force myself to slog through the mess to find some decent stories, I have to avoid the Internet like the plague. I go row or read or take a drive. I just can't deal with this crap any longer. I'm not one to complain much and I usually don't rant in any of my editorials, but I've reached the breaking point. Anonymous, Sony, identity theft, blah blah blah blah BLAH.
A little while back, I did an article about how the PSN problem turns our attention to more important things. Now I'm not willing to give the ordeal any attention whatsoever (even though I'll have to for the job), and I refuse to attribute any life-altering significance to this ugliness. I'm done. I'm gonna go play the Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection. Leave me the hell alone, Internet.

Let's just hope this is a restoration, where Sony's online services wont get hacked again.

i am really sick of this whole thing just dragging on. everyone making sony the bad guy and bashing them all day long. this world is really getting ass backwards. M$ can pump out a broken console and everyone eats it up and buys 3 of them. sony puts out quality and people sh!t on it and ignore it. sony gets attacked by basically terrorists and eveyone hates sony for it.
is it just me or has this felt like longer than it has been?

one thing that bothers me is that there has not been any news from sony other than all this hacker/network down crap. like i understand what is going on but it shut sony down as a company all the way. its like they are a pc reformatting themselves and will reboot when done.

I have a feeling this whole thing is going to amount to a whole lot more than us having to change our passwords and sign up for theft protection. I'm sure any big corporation with sense is upgrading their security as much as possible, because in reality it can happen to any of them. This whole incidents huge and the way the media blew it up, it could change the internet as we know it forever. Soccer moms unite and change the world!
Thanks Fox, CNN, and CBS for taking advantage of another opportunity to make video games the devil. I really dont want to know how much of suburbia thinks their individual consoles are being hacked by computer geeks and that their CC info is hijacked and being sold to cyber terrorists. With Bin Laden gone I guess we have a new enemy. Cyberterrorists!! They're even scarier than the traditional terrorist because they ARE your neighbor! Excuse me while I roll my eyes so hard I see the back of my throat.

yeah, i'm already using the cloud save. however, i only finished crysis 2 and socom 4 on hardest and all collectibles after psn went down. so right now i dont have access to the cloud to make a copy or get a copy. so if my ps3 craps out anytime before psn gets back up, i'm gonna have to redo crysis 2 again for trophies and gamesave. luckily socom isnt copy protected. i'm pretty sure this thing with my ps3 is a one time glitch though but i'm just being safe. I still have to start littlebigplanet 2 and i think i'm buying brink next week too.
@highlander
thats what i'm doing, any other non copy protected files i save on a memory stick pro duo. card readers on the launch ps3 is awesome.
@frylock
yeah, thats the thing that bothers me with sony's updates. its all the same noninformative posts. it always says the same things but nothing of actual information or update.

heres how i got plus. i bought a used copy of transformers war for cybertron at gamestop with a gift card i had. beaten the game then returned it for cash. went to best buy and bought psn cards to get plus. I kinda regret "borrowing" transformers though since it was a good game. i want to get it when price went down but cant seem to justify a purchase because i already beaten the game.

i'm just taking a precaution. my ps3 lost video while using the browser. i tried holding the power button for 2 seconds multiple times and it wont turn off. i tried holding the button longer and it finally did, about 30 secs i believe. since i never had this kind of "glitch" before, i'm just being cautious. did something like this happen to anyone else?

I just got my plat on KZ3!Also, enjoying TRINITY:Souls of Zill O'll,Socom 4,and Motorstorm:Apocalypse.I like to drink beer on the weekends play BFBC2, but I don't think PSN being down is a, life or death situation.People act like they're console doesn't work if it can't do multi-player?I pity the people that can't enjoy the hobby in it's purist form.

By the way, how many days is it till it comes back on? Is it 7 days or 14? This is just me, but I would rather everything come on at once. Whether it took one week or two.
Did you hear? There's a rumor that xbox may be releasing the 360 sequel at e3. (I strongly doubt it.)

i know they are called hackers for a reason, but there are some minimum steps that sony did not take on security. so much data was leeched from their network that i remain convinced they were not monitiring closely. the initial reports sort of confirm that.
if my computer got hacked and i wasn't running the latest security updates i would blame myself.
Lairfan
Saturday, May 07, 2011 @ 6:42:23 PM
As far as it being Sony's fault that they were hacked, Sony can't exactly control the hacker's, now can they? Sure, the hackers got through Sony's defenses, but you've gotta admit, 3 to 4 years is a long time for this kind of thing to happen, especially since Sony said when the PS3 released that the PSN was unhackable.
And all these people saying they're selling their PS3s and moving on are a bunch of liars. Maybe 1 out of 60 people will do that, but the others are just using the anonymity of the Internet to vent. Overall, Sony's not in danger of losing too much business. Sure, people who want to vent or who just hate Sony will give them a pounding on Internet forums, but unless that forum talk turns into physical selling of PS3s for 360s, there's not much reason for concern.

again, they knew they were under threat from hackers, but did nothing. sony employees were noting the security wholes for months b4 this attack. at least that's what was said at that hearing. it's not like i'm making this stuff up. the thing that bugs me the most is the "known exploit" on apache. just how seriously were they taking network security if they didn't even have the latest security updates installed? that's just negligent.
i just think there's a reason the victim card hasn't worked this time for sony. i just don't buy that a multibillion dollar comany was totally helpless and could do nothing to keep this from happening.

That just reminds me of friggin game delays. As you get more excited about a game and the release date creeps up on you the developer announces that the game will be available an extra month later. (Friggin GT5), I still don't believe that game is available yet. JK

Then once the wall is down you realize there wasn't any insulation, so you better put some of that in there. While you were pulling down trim some of it broke, so you gotta buy some more of that.
Oops you accidentally cut through the phone wire when bringing down the wall. Just goes on and on. So a project that you though might take a few days had unforeseen complications.
That's how most things are in life and when guessing how long anything will take, sometimes you hit your mark and sometimes their are unforeseen complications.

PS Blog, my bank and Highlander have given me all the info I need to know about this whole ordeal, and I feel so much more at ease.
All we have to do now is ignore the idiots on those other dumb bias websites who are out to destroy Sony's reputation and wait for PSN to be switched back on. Not long now.
I haven't visited IGN in days. I just can't handle their bias "articles" slandering the Sony name anymore. And all the idiots who friequent that site claiming they are trading their consoles towards a 360, just cos their service is still up. IT'S CALLED PATIENCE!!!
Seriously, I worry about our youth, it seems all patience has flown out the window. Everyone wants everything NOW!!!

How are they going to do the avengers next year? What's the budget for that movie? When you include all the heroes, villians, there individual abilities, the special effects, and the actors and actresses pay? We'll see.

avengers were kinda introduced in the first ironman after the credits. nick fury was shown but i guess the avenger initiative wasnt properly introduced till the end of 2. they're just trying to milk this avenger thing. i mean, noone really cares if thor had a stand alone movie. you can have thor be in the avenger movie and noone would care less about his origin. all they really needed was ironman and captain america. hulk cant really be used as a main character because he's too unstable, most he can do is a background character. i mean he's only hulk when he gets mad and even then all he does is break things. when he's not hulk hes just a scientist and who wants to watch just that.

The Avengers groups you're referring to is the NEW AVENGERS & the SECRET AVENGERS which includes Ms. Marvel, Luke Cage, Wolverine, Spider-Woman, Spider-Man, Ronin(Clint Barton), and Bucky Barnes who takes over the mantle as the new Captain America after Steve Rogers gets shot.

I guess, like with the Bin Laden story, if you have something embarrassing to let out now is the time because nobody would notice. Xbox could raise it's Live cost, burn down a few more houses, kill a hooker, and ban every console and it wouldn't even make the news through all the Sony hate.

I know you have a love for Tifa, so was curious if you have seen the Tifa PS3 theme? I'm not sure where I found it, but I know it's not on the psn or anything like that. Some ps3 theme website.
If you already have it, or can't find, I might be able to send it to you. It's all Tifa so I thought you might like it.

Alright, but ever last one of these people forgets something. Sony is not one singular entity, it's hundreds of thousands of people livelihoods, it's the people that work for Sony, their families and friends, the suppliers Sony relies on, their distribution partners. literally hundreds of thousands, if not millions of jobs are dependent on Sony as an employer. Not to mention the consumers that are the public collateral damage in all of this.
So we have a very small group of very annoying people who think that they can do whatever they like walking over hundreds of thousands of others. Who could I be talkig about? On many sites, that would be Sony. No, it's the hackers, a tiny number of people too clever to see the harm they are doing. They are choosing what laws to obey or ignore, and they are harming many, many people and consumers with their actions.
Ironically, that is what they claim to be fighting against.
Either way, in all the hatred aimed at Sony, and the anger, no one ever stops to think about all the regular working folks that depend on their job who could be very negatively affected by all of this. It's not just video games and hackers with delusions of grandure. It's real life for a great many people who are now very squarely in the target zone. If Sony suffers significant loss from all of this, they will have to shed jobs to regroup and recover. Who's fault will that be?
Yep, the criminals and cyber-terrorists behind all of this, that's who. It's time people started actually thinking about this instead of reacting. I agree with Ben, but in defense of all those people employed by Sony and their partners who could be harmed by this, I can't let it go.

Another thing when ever the government truly wants something they get it! In other words Big Brother is always watching. They know who hacked Sony! they monitoring them right now they just want the big fish. They let us know what they want us to know. FBI,Home Security-they know how to do there job well and on the DL. The hackers didn't steal anything they just wanted to prove to Sony that they could. "Complicated system" please you created it! Please stop playing arrest those who's guilty and turn the psn back on already. I'm praying for quick justice and praying for restoration of psn and restoration for Sony as a whole. Jealousy, envy, strife, wicked attacks, lies Sony's had a enough.

I have been trying to pretty much shut out the outside world because I'm sick of all the stupid lies surrounding the psn.
I swear some of these "journalist" just heard from a friend that psn was hacked and without any other information wrote some six paragraph story about how Sony had no security and every ones info was stolen without any effort and all this nonsense.
Makes me want to hit someone, thankfully I have sports champions and can play the gladiator games until my arms feel like falling off.

Hust finally got and started playing Marvel Ultimate alliance 2. I'm loving that game.
With regards to the network i'm happy for it too be back when it's secure but i agree with alot of people on here that the constant Sony bashing and bittersness that i've seen on the net over the last couple of weeks and the recycled news storys are getting bothersome. So much so that like ben said it can be quite hard to find good reads on new games, annoucement and just general industry stuff.
i just hope that when PSN comes back on we can all get back to some sort of normality and news sites can get back to reporting on the things that matter to gamers. the GAMES!!!!

Our consoles still work.. our games still work..and yet people are complaining that they have nothing to play..
Then there's the annoying sense of entitlement... I've never seen such a large group of people insist on getting something for nothing.

It's time we climb down from that pink coloured sky. Online connectivity is an essential part of game systems of today, it is a requirement, it is part of what we pay for when we buy the hardware and games for it.
This is not Sony being Santa Claus handing out network services for all just cause they love us so and think it's jolly fun to host server parks.
PSN is there because of the calculations of large corporation whose goal is to sell as many units as possible at the highest profit possible, earning as much money for the share holders as possible. We all pay for psn just like we pay the salary for a whole bunch of people working for Sony. Same thing.
So essentially, right now a part of the playstation 3 product is defect. It matters more to some than to others, but that's beside the point.

Last time I checked PSN was free. Unless you can provide some actual proof that Sony directly charges us for the service...?
Of course Sony aren't providing the service out of the goodness of their hearts. Everyone knows that. There's plenty of profits to be made via online distribution and networks. This outage is hurting them a lot more than us.
But the bottom line is, unless you are a PS+ or MMO subscriber, Sony doesn't technically owe you anything.

And yes, of course it is us who pay for psn. Who else? Who do you think pay for it? What money is being used here? And where did that money come from? Is it founded by the japanese authority? A rich uncle in the US?
When you see an offer in a shop, "free coke if you buy three cookies", is the coke really free?
Hey! I'll give you a CAR for free! Just buy this house from me and you got it! For FREE!
Here in Norway it is even forbidden by law to call anything "free" if there is a requirement to buy something in order to get it.

In case you didn't know.. Sony transfers a lot of PSN's maintenance cost directly onto developers and third parties. Devs are required to host and maintain their own servers. In addition , Sony charges them for any items that they want to distribute via PSN. Same goes for all the non game related content. Third parties have to pay Sony for this as well.

When we buy a game, no matter who published it, a share of what you pay goes to Sony, exactly for these kind of things. So, by buying the games, we pay for PSN as well as other things, in *addition* to the development of the game.
As opposed to for instance games for PC. Have you ever noticed the huge price difference for the same game for PC vs consoles? Right there you have it, that's how you pay for PSN no matter if you use it or not.
It's all a matter of pricing policy, really.
(ps; thanks for replying with well argued points of view. To stay on topic is an artform in itself ;) )

Had a guy trade in his PS3 to get a 360 cause he "heard" Obama (yes, the US President) had his credit card stolen from the PSN.
Ridiculous! I just started giving people the Web address for the Sony Blog updates and told them anything else they read is simply Slander.
It's all just become so annoying, even on this site.

i don't know why he traded in his ps3 plus 11 games. he must have been a hardcore online gaming addict or something. i have no doubt that maybe some are getting rid of their ps3's, but i think that's a pretty knee jerk reaction.

For the love of god look at your significant other and appreciate them for the mere fact they are tolerating you for yelling at them about the PSN still being down. I haven't stopped reading gaming relating things online in so long that all I see is "PSN still down, wah wah wah" with people commenting "I'm going to the more reliable American made console, xbox never has this problem, I'm not gonna buy anything from the PSN unless its back up now!"
Ok fine how about if they do bring it up NOW and what happens? They get this all over again, the next thing will be "Sony should've spent more time on it,way to rush it Sony!" Sony would rather be bashed on about how long it takes for them to put something they are not 100% assure of being ready than to have to do it again because they did a rushed job!
I've never skipped over sooo many articles and comments in all of my web surfing days until now.

To my knowledge no Linux distro has any firewalls turned on by default, simply cause usually firewalls are operating at least one level before the computer on the network (it's a typical router job). It's the least ideal solution to have the firewall running on the same machine it is supposed to shield. That is, to put it bluntly, a "windows solution".
The job of a firewall is (simplified) to only let legit traffic through and deny the rest.
But a hackers attempts is usually "legit" from a firewalls point of view cause a lot of traffic is supposed to pass through, it's a service provider after all (as opposed to a personal computer who usually is not supposed to serve anything at all).
So it's too simple to claim that "no firewall equals getting hacked on day one". You can have a system with high security without a firewall, just as you can have no security at all with a running firewall. It's all a matter of the quality of the configuration and the software, and this is why there are experts for hire on these kind of jobs. :)

You build a strong perimeter with firewalls and monitoring systems to detect unusual activity, you build an authentication system that works with the perimeter to govern who gets in and what they have access to. You build the other elements of the system on their own dedicated servers. You potentially segment the internal servers on their own networks with firewalls in place between them to protect them, but more likely is that you simply use secure communication protocols and secure shell sessions to access the systems.
The reason that you don't load up every system with a firewall is the load on that system. These aren't consumer PCs or other general purpose systems with multiple tasks to perform, they are specialist high performance application and database servers. You build the secure network to host/protect the secure application servers. You layer on ether security such as secure shell communications, data encryption in your database, disc level encryption on the hardware, password hashing and monitoring, but the primary defense is that perimeter.
I'm sorry, but the criticisms of Dr Spafford about there not being firewalls on the database servers make great sound bytes but carry no technical merit at all. Whether you put a software firewall on a database application or web application server depends entirely on your overall security architecture. There are times when I could see someone doing it, especially on a smaller network. But it depends on the architecture.

Truly though, I think this exposes a far bigger problem in our overall culture than it does in just the video gaming public. How the hell did we get to the point where we can't wait a couple weeks for better things (in this case, security)? How the hell did we get to the point where instant gratification is valued more than patience? And how the hell did we get to the point where, if we don't have our technology, suddenly we can't function anymore? I'm just saddened by what I perceive to be the depravities of our modern culture, and its displayed in no better place than this PSN problem.
I just hope we wake up to the fact that our culture's on a path to a bad place soon. Otherwise, issues like this will provoke far worse responses in the future.

gamers tend to be pretty passionate about their hobby. that's not always a bad thing. ofcourse they miss an important feature of their console when it's gone. the websites are just reflecting a lot of the frusrtation felt by gamers. yes, they have beaten it to the ground, but it's a hot topic.
the comments in the psn blog are pretty outrageous at times. what's surprising about that is those are psn account holders going crazy. there are a lot more online gaming addicts out there than i thought.

For all those whiners, this is nothing more than a minor inconvenience to you & at least you still have a PS3 to play on.
Just try having 127 BluRay games, & a completely dead smashed-up PS3, through no fault of your own.
Plus, without money to buy another one anytime in the foreseeable either now, due to me being let go as a blackjack dealer today, after 21 f*cking years of loyal service.
And just because new owners took over & did a second 10% head-chop today so they could further pad their already exorbitant million dollar+ yearly bonuses.
So now I've got to wait for my unemployment to kick in, which still won't be enough for me to afford another PS3.
So as I see it, none of the constant whiners have anything even remotely qualified to frigging b*tch about.

that's just horrible news. my heart goes out to you. you would think 21 yrs of service would give you senority.
what happened to your ps3 is terrible as well. it did have insurance on it so imagine you will eventually get it replaced.
try to keep your head up. things will get better.

I also just got "down-sized", after 12 years, despite running a profitable division. The really obnoxious part is they must have spent more remodelling my office (twice!) than they would have spent buying new computers, which was their excuse for closing our division.
My ex-boss is a moron.

My son was a huge huge COD fan and played to the point of obsession. We agreed it was best to sell the 360 and its library and keep the PS3 in my room so he wouldn't have easy access to it. It has worked well.
I've never been a big multi-player fan. Too old to care how I stack up against some 12y/o kid who plays CoD 16 hours a day. Not my idea of fun...shrug...

Sony first goes and cripples the Other OS performance. GeoHot tries to uncripple Other OS by hacking Hypervisor. Sony then STOLE my PC. I couldn't justify the expense of either a second BC PS3 or a new computer, so I had to fall back to my slow pathetic Mac, and give up my fast Linux PS3 PC.
Not all hackers are criminals. I would call myself a hacker, but I don't do the same type of illegal stuff you seem all too happy to group us into. I build robots, I've strung out my ancient Power Mac into a 2 tower monstrosity, just trying to keep up with my needs.
Sony deserves every last Dollar, Yen, and Euro of loss over their unethical asshattery. I HOPE this costs them over a billion. I've already sworn off Sony's next generation.
Wah!!! I can't play my games online cause an unethical company steals functions from products already sold, plants spyware on PCs via music CDs, sues people who try to make their stupid robot dogs better, and more or less feels free to take a big steaming dump on it's customers without hesitation.
Sony makes the best hardware in the world, but they can't give one iota of respect to their customers.
Hurray for GeoHot...
Hurray for Grafchoklo...
Hurray for Anonymous...
Screw the idiots that stole personal info... Let 'em burn...
And most of all... Screw SONY!!!
