Ben's Week In Review: May 29
First of all, sorry for not getting this up last night; I've been busy this weekend.
I have NO idea what I want out of the PlayStation 4
I'm plenty satisfied with the PS3 for now, so when I heard Sony was looking into the next piece of hardware, I realized I had zero expectations. That isn't because I don't care and it isn't because I have a lack of faith in Sony. It's because at this point in the industry, I can't be certain of the technological direction... There are particular elements of this hobby that have become quite popular in the last five years or so, and that includes multiplayer, digital distribution, and motion sensing. However, I'm really not a gigantic fan of any of that (save some great little unique adventures on the PSN), and if the advancements in the PS4 tend to focus on these aspects, it won't affect me much.
Of course, you can expect better graphics and all that but even then, my anticipation has sort of stalled. I find myself looking at some of the games today with a fair amount of awe; i.e., "man, what could possibly be next?" I mean, I know I'll say that when I see Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. I guess I'm just not as psyched for the next generation as I thought I would be; various changes in the gaming landscape haven't gripped me enough.
Square Enix listened to its fans? ...I bet not
I don't know how much of that preview is accurate and the translation might be a little off in some places, but there's only one statement that has me questioning: that bit about Square Enix "getting the message" sent by fans after Final Fantasy XIII released. Thing is, I just don't believe that. I think this is a company that has been completely out of touch with their fans this entire generation. And I'm sorry, but that's the reason they're in such dire financial straits right now (tragedies and earthquakes aside). They continue to mess with established franchises in a ridiculous attempt to cater to Western gamers and it has not worked. From Front Mission Evolved (yeah, the strategy fans that loved the series wanted action-based 'rolling eyes') to FF, the former RPG kings have been ignoring the fans.
They've been trying to assess the shifting climate and market, which every company needs to do, of course. But I still firmly believe that had they stuck to their guns, they wouldn't be posting giant losses all the time. And call me old-fashioned, but I just refuse to believe a faithful FFVII remake wouldn't help. In fact, I'm starting to think that such a project is the only thing that could save them right now.
Personal gaming update
I'm trying to savor the last part of L.A. Noire and besides, I should have both Alice: Madness Returns and inFamous 2 this week at some point, so my focus has to change for a while. I can't wait for Sucker Punch's sequel (as you might've guessed) but I really want to finish L.A. Noire before completely immersing myself. As for Alice, I have high hopes, and I have one more headline to post from writer/creator R.J. Berg. I also plan to talk to Dr. Bartholow this week; he's the one who conducted that game study.
Lastly, in just a few weeks time, we should be able to announce something pretty huge...yes, it's what we've been teasing for a while...the PSN ordeal pushed us back and I would apologize if it had been our fault. But it wasn't; we all know where the fault lies for that mess.

As for SE, yeah, I just nabbed Nier and hope to start it after a run through 3D Dot Hero. If that game is as fun as you said, then maybe I'll forgive SE, but as of now, they are not the dev I'm looking to for my gaming entertainment.

Every time I play current gen games, I'm still reminded that we still don't see clothe that actually moves and looks like real clothe(usually a flat texture applied to a polygonal rig). The same goes for hair(particularly long hair), and basically most every other aspect of visual fidelity I can think could be more realistic.
But anyway, that's not to say I'm not real excited to engage in many of the current and future offerings found on PS3, because I am.
PGU: This week has been all over the place. I did Dirt and loved it. I've also been doing quite a bit of GT5. I'm sort of in a lull with it, though. I'm trying to get Golds on the Extreme Series and I just don't have enough cash for a Formula GT car, or even a GT Racing car. I suppose there's more I can do in the 'Special' modes, like get Golds in some of those AMG events. But I really don't want to have to 'grind' by replaying certain races over and over again.
And I went back to try Forza 3, heheheh oh man, yeah, I can't play it. The handling is so, so, not as real.
I read that Turn 10 is 'finally' doing some road telemetry sampling from road surfaces for Forza 4, so that's a step in the right direction, but, even then, there's probably whole lot of other stuff they'd need to address before catching up, including more powerful hardware.
Outside of that. I finally, finally, got Heavy Rain. It's coming to me in the mail. Hopefully by Wednesday it'll get here. And I'm only playing this game because this community thinks so much of it. Maybe I'll be real impressed by it, too.

Square in my eyes is done. I'll cherish all of their past games in the same way I do a classic music album. I'll visit those games from time to time. They are out of touch and dilusional now & clearly no longer want to have an identity.
PGU: Infamous 2 can't come soon enough. Until it gets here, ill keep playing Portal 2 co-op which is an absolute blast! I haven't had that much fun online since demons souls. Vagrant Story has been giving me my JRPG fix. I missed that game when it first came out as I just went away to college. 10 years later better late then never..

I'm with you on Square Enix, by "listened to the fans" they probably mean "Sales of XIII were good so we'll do more of that only faster and dumber"
I've just been playing too many games. I even picked a fight with Quantum Theory. It was awful, but is about to become great fodder for an article. I REALLY need to catch up, cuz I have inFamous, Alice 2, AND Duke Nukem on preorder!
And I had a dream last night that I had Cole's super powers and some of my own. It was wild.

I finished L.A. Noire and I still think highly of it. Really enjoyed the ending sequence which reminded me of the ending to the classic noir film, The Third Man (great movie!!). I think Heavy Rain is better though because of how much more emotionally invested I was in it. Not enough was given about Cole for me to care about him the same as Ethan.
Hope the PS store come back soon. Still really needing to finish Chrono Trigger (DS) and Final Fantasy XIII. Also can't wait for E3 and all the huge announcements. NGP FTW!

PlayStation Fans: Watch E3 Online Right Here
Posted by Jeff Rubenstein // Social Media Manager
Last year, we invited three hundred fans into our press conference. This year, we’re shooting for a million.
You’ve been requesting it, so for the first time, we’ll be broadcasting the entirety of the PlayStation press conference directly into this Blog.
Additionally, we’re setting up a mini-studio in the PlayStation booth, and we’ll be bringing in developers while the show floor is open for interviews, live demos and to answer your questions via a built-in chat module. It all starts right here on June 6th.

Secondly, as long as there are games, there will be great single player campaigns. We have seen more focus on multiplayer this gen, but overall we still get great single player campaigns as well. There might be one or two games here and there that had single player suffer due to multiplayer, but overall single player campaigns have been pretty plentiful this gen.
And lastly, I think the next gen will feature games that can be had both in store and online on release day. I think this is the best option, as we aren't quite ready for DD only but at the same time it should be an option to those who want to buy the game online.
Having said all that, I don't really see how much games can improve. It almost feels like the next generation of consoles will only be slight upgrades to this gen. Sure, the hardware will improve, which in turn will allow the software to do more. But that will mean developers will incur even more costs in making a game. Who knows, next gen people might come to expect L.A. Noire-like facial expressions, Uncharted-like character/level design and voice acting, CoD like multiplayer... That could put alot of smaller studios out of business, and originality could take a hit.
I guess it's too soon to tell which direction we're headed, I think we might have a better idea after E3.

I can wait for the PS4. I'm getting ready to get a bigger HD for my phat and I'm getting a new slim as well. I mean really I have no clue what else they could put into it, a blender maybe...
As for S-E, well I lost faith with them a LONG time ago. Out of touch is right. They lost their mojo and trying to cater to 'western' tastes is not the way to go to regain it. Sad really.

Got done with 6th play-through of inFamous last night now just waiting for the 7th so I can dive right into I2. I have two weeks of personal days saved up which are about to go bye-bye if I don't use them so I'm using one of them so I can have uninterrupted time with I2. Yay!
My brother came by with L.A. Noire yesterday and I was impressed with what I saw. It is on my list of games to get eventually. Other than that I've been play Uncharted 2 multiplayer here and there and waiting for E3. That's it, happy gaming people.

As for S-E, I'm not going to reiterate how I feel about them.
Personal Update:
Finished the campaign of inFamous on good again, and I don't want to move on. I want to finish off the stunts, take over the rest of the territories and find that other 130 blast shards, as well as playing it evil to get 100% again. The game is too good, but I must put it aside so that I can blast through L.A. Noire before the sequel. Anyway, I'll be posting my review of iF hopefully tonight, and I'll be going back to finish it after iF2... The game is way too frickin' good.
I've been in the city since mid-week, explaining my absence here and over at TR, and I've got my niece here at home with me again, so I'll remain in a reduced capacity until she goes back to her mother whenever that will be. I'd planned to make quite a dent in Paradise when I was down there, and I wold have had I not left the book here at home :/ Thusly, I remain on the third canto.
And I picked up my shiny new 2011 Jeep Wrangler Sport on Thursday. It's beautiful...
Peace.
P.S. Working on a preview for Child of Eden for TR at the moment, if anyone cares.

I've given up on square's titles, they'll need to release something great again to regain my interest.
PGU: beat L.A NOIRE, not the most exciting climax but regardless of what happened I actually felt quite happy about the outcome, particularly the cutscene after the credits. With Exams coming up I don't know if I can buy Infamous 2 until after. Which'll take patience that I'm not sure I have....
