Is There Any Hope For Resistance 3?

Not from a quality standpoint - I remain convinced the game will be great - but just from a financial/sales standpoint.

Look, the entire world is caught up in this Battlefield 3/Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 rivalry, and it's only going to heat up over the next couple of months. Both are shooters. Both come out within a couple weeks of one another (October 25 for BF3 and November 8 for MW3). Both are seeking to push the envelope in the FPS genre. With this much hype, and the chances that both will be excellent, shooter fans will likely want both.

Furthermore, we'll likely be bombarded with footage for both titles until they launch. And that means the expectations will be through the roof; the fans are expecting nothing less than jaw-dropping. Now, where the hell does Resistance 3 squeeze in? Its only hope is that it'll be ready on September 6, a good month and a half before Battlefield 3 arrives. But is that gap big enough? Shooter aficionados are probably preparing to drop $130 on BF3 and MW3, and if I've got my finger on the right pulse, those same gamers are skeptical of R3. Way too skeptical, I say, but oh well...

And of course, Insomniac's new title is exclusive to one platform, which automatically limits sales potential. So when you consider the entire picture, I really have to worry: can Resistance 3 survive? Will it thrive? I'm concerned that even if it turns out great, the gaming world's gaze will remain fixed on BF3 vs. MW3, and R3 will just sort of slide by unnoticed. I really hope it doesn't happen (Insomniac deserves the love), but at this point... I mean, nobody will shut up about BF3 and MW3 and it's only July.

R3 better hope its significant head start is good enough to carve out a niche for itself. Oh, and it better be really, really good.

Resistance 3 is a completely different beast to anything else releasing. From a heavy story focal point, the old school weapon selector, non-regenerative health, everything about it screams that it will be different from the big hitters. I don't care what people have to say about the other two, because Resistance is getting my money first, and maybe only. BF is looking good, but I want to play the Bad Company games to see if I like them first, and CoD isn't on my radar.

Of course, R3 will be criminally underrated, and will underperform in a massive way, but such is life. If Sony had released it in June or July it would have been much better, but alas.

I was quite surprised when R3 actually impressed the Resistance haters at IGN, and since they were the ones to do the junket with Insomniac at Comic-Con I think that bodes well. I wasn't impressed with the demo but it was super restrictive so let's just hope it's all its cracked up to be.

If you want to start unlocking things for Resistance 3 early on head over to http://myresistance.net/global/ to play "Global Resistance" a free online companion strategy game where you choose a human or chimeran commander and have at your friends in a war for global domination in the world of Resistance.

Oh Ye of little faith. The original resistance was outstanding. One of my favorite shooters of all time in fact. And sure they took a bit of a risk with the 2nd game but according to reviews, both were pretty slick. Those who doubt insomniac are foolish. It's a developer that continually offers great games even when a series is nearly 8 entries long and strong. If u people are really that skeptical, wait for bens review then make ur decision I know one thing is certain, r3 will get my money long before cod does.

@lawless: The games from all those companies besides Sony and a few games from EA, I couldn't care less about. But like I have said before, we have to do something now before things get worse and I have been gaming for almost twenty years, I'm not about to let gaming become a greedy, dirty piece of sh** or collapse again. Hopefully there aren't going to be a lot of suckers like you that accept anything even if it's a fu** you to you. This is why all these crap methods have happened, because of suckers like you.

@WorldEnds: It's the principle. If I buy games with any of the greedy methods, the greedy methods will never change and it will only get worse like it already has. Excluding content from games on purpose just to release as paid DLC, locking content already on the disc just to release the unlock "code" for an extra fee, charging for DLC that should be free and now online pass. If suckers like lawless keep buying/supporting the games that have those methods and not say anything about it, that you can't delete game save might actually happen. Hooray! SUCKERS!

I'm getting Resistance 3 on day 1. Not even really interested in MW3 or BF3. I've never really been a fan of FPS but Insomniac makes amazing games. And I don't understand why so many people liked the first Resistance but not the second. The only two major differences were the weapon wheel and the health system. The weapon wheel didn't seem like a big deal to me and

*possible spoiler*

Hale probably didn't need health packs in Resistance 2 because he was turning an his healing power was getting stronger

World, I agree about R1. I forced myself to finish it. It was good, but not great. I played it late though, well after Uncharted, and Infamous, so I got to liking trophies, and top notch graphics and story, so no trophies and not a great story for Resistance made it a 3 star game for me. Still finished it though, and want to play R2.

If there is no hope for R3 then it''s R3's fault and noone else. The videos I've seen so far the graphics look outdated and stale. You simply do not release a fps like this with an outdated graphics engine. That's suicide.

I may be wrong, it may turn out to look absolutely fabulous, but if so then those videos released so far is doing it a *huge* disfavour.

Why? The topic is R3. I'm not saying they are the only ones delivering (what seems to be) sub-par graphics.

All I am saying is that against the likes of Frostbite and CryEngine you stand very little chance of success with graphics that looks like screen shots from Half-Life.

I even believe that mw3 will have a tweaked engine that will look impressive in at least some aspects. One should not underestimate the outcome of three studios working on the same game.

sorry bro, im not seeing the same horrible looking screen shots you are. Its no killzone 3, bf3 or crysis 2 but i cant list too many other fps games that look better graphically.

After black ops came out looking worse than MW2, i wouldnt count on MW3 having some huge tweak that makes it stand out graphically.

They are not *horrible*, by all means. They just are not impressive, to put it that way. Also remember that a small video screen usually makes the graphics look *better* than they are.

Hey I hope I am wrong here, cause because of the coop mode this game offer it's probably going to be bought by me regardless of the graphics. I just am not an optimist in these regards.

Regarding MW3 I believe they feel the competition much stronger now than they felt when Black Ops were created, and act accordingly. I expect mw3 to be pretty darn good actually. One should never underestimate your enemy. (I've preordered bf, not mw btw :))

Your opinion on te screenshots is fine it's your opinion. I don't judge screen shots ever because it's just that a screenshot. The gameplay I seen showed at E3 look pretty good to me for a game not releasing for a few more months.. But that's just me. But you called out R3 for looking outdated and it's engine in particular. All the while R3's direct competition is MW3, and BF3 in the FPS genre. CoD has used the same engine for what going on 5 games now, with little upgrades too it.

Either way I know IW has made a few tweaks to the engine to get more in whatever circumstance that may be, and yea DICE seems to have built a great new engine, but Insomniac is more than proven. Were talking about the developers who made everyone talk about toy story type graphics from a video game in Ratchet and Clank. That's my poInt is all.

By all means I respect Insomniacs earlier work on R&C, they are rock solid productions.

It's just my honest impression about this particular game that I express here, based on what little we have seen. And frankly, what I have seen, especially that multiplayer demo, looked worse than any recent COD games I've played. Not just visually either, it looked unbalanced and generic.

Please note that I both expect and await someone to knock COD off their throne. It just won't be R3 even if it had been released also for pc/x360, that much I'm afraid I can guarantee.

The co-op was fun though in R2. Did they ever release more missions than what was there in retail? I couldn't get into the MP in R2 so I didn't stay with it long enough to know.

Hmm seems like I should put R2 back on my todo-list and check out the campaign. I love to "rediscover" a game! I had FEAR2 collecting dust for many months until I gave it another go, and loved it. Same with Red Dead Redemption, rediscovered it while the psn were down.

Don't know if there was released any more missions for R2... We never got to finish the coop before we grew tired of it. It was fun up until then though! It was the recycling of the "map loops" that became a bit too repetitive after *many* hours, otherwise we'd play it to the end.
I find campaign coop to be the best coop there is, so I'm very happy about that move in R3.

The coop in R2 were not campaign, it was a rather weird hybrid, where each map had four different bosses, and you had to play through the same map four times to get to each of them (on four different locations).
No story, no campaign, just fight'n'go. :)

I've seen many praised that coop version but my coop buddy and I found it eventually to be too repetitive.
What I prefer is the story, events, and variety of a single player campaign *and* be able to enjoy that with a friend. "A good moment is better shared".

Resistance 3 I will get once the price drops, and for the first time I am very interested in Bioshock 3. It will be a bit of a juggling act to see how I can divide my pennies on a few titles... there is also Trine 2 to think about as well.

"R3 will be the most fun" -> For me this is true. I will enjoy R3 the most for one reason and one reason only: The campaign coop mode. AFAIK none of the other two can offer that.
However, as a fps multiplayer shooter it will hardly make a blip on the radar.
That's my prediction.

yeah...I definitely don't care for Resistance 3 at the moment. Resistance 2 was a rental for good reason and I see Resistance 3 being the same thing. This is just my feelings right now, it might change...but I will definitely be picking up MW3 and/or BF3.

The Resistance franchise just isn't that popular to tell you the truth. Same thing could be said about Infamous...neither franchises had good advertising. Sony needs to hype their games more.

Actually, inFamous 2 had some really good advertising in the stores here. It was *the* main game in the shops for a long time, with huge posters filling walls, windows and deco.

sale wise definitely no, resistance titles never have been good sellers.
more importantly though im worried about quality wise.
i dunno nothing so far has really wowed me about it.
everythings either been OMFG i cant believe they did that, thats freaking stupid!
or meh.
R2 looked freaking sweet, ill never forget the day at E3 where ted walked up on stage and showed us the giant titan battle.
nothing about R3 has jumped out at me like that did, everythings been meh.
i dunno, i just get the sense that insomniac are just running out of ideas for this, that and there trying to get it out of the door ASAP so they can move onto overstrike.
i always said insomniac does not know how to make a bad game.
resitance 2 came bloody close to proving me wrong, but it looks like this will be the first to actually do so.

same thing goes for R&C all for one.
im a massive ratchet fan, if not the biggest one out there!
but all for one just does not excite me at all, just does not look like a ratchet and clank game.
i freaking loved a crack in time, 2nd best in the series and one of the best games on the ps3!
i wish we could of just got a sequel to that, instead of this spinoff nonsense.
as i said above again this just feels like insomniac are trying to get it out the door ASAP so they can get onto overstrike.
i mean insomniac always show off there games constantly, always revealing new weapons which are a staple of insomniac, and especially R&C.
when was the last time they revealed a new weapon for all for one?
i just get the feeling that there not interested in the series at the moment, there just trying to rush it out as fast as possible so they can get on.
why o why did they have to go over to EA?
another developer to add to the third party transition casualty list.
:(

Resistance 2 wasn't nearly good enough to keep me interested in shelling out £40 on Resistance 3 - especially if my brother or I will have to pay for this playstation pass thing. Haven't bought a COD since Modern Warfare and that's not changing this November, although B3 does interest me. Either way, no one's buying all 3, most people will get just the one and 90% will choose COD or Battlefield. A shame because I love Insomniac, but they screwed up with R2.

R2 is fine, all I keep hearing is people moaning about the weapon wheel that wasn't in R2. The story is alright I had fun playing and loved the online Co-Op battles against the Chimera's.

R3 tops my list easily because of Move support. In fact, non-Move-supporting FPS's aren't even considered. Thank you, Insomniac.

Well that's kinda put the pressure on me. Hope you like it!

It'll probably help if you play the campaign first to get accustomed to it. I played on Easy to avoid any frustration I might have with it early on. I completed the campaign 3 times - working up to Elite. When I finally went online I immediately did much better than I had with any other shooter. Find it more enjoyable too.

Its not just R3 sales that may be affected by the release of B3 and MW3 every game game is even uncharted, skyrim, gears, ect. Im not sure but I think resistance 3 is launching in september? which puts it a mouth ahead of both titles gears may be in more trouble.

There isn't much hope for it. A sad reality but it will be washed over by everything else. However I am getting Resistance 3 and not going pick up either MW3 or Battlefield 3.

I love Insomniac and everything they make.

I'm picking it up day one. It looks way better than part 2. I recently saw Battlefield Los Angeles, started playing the first Resistence, will continue with part 2 again, all of this just to get me ready for part 3. That's one game I play for the story over the multiplayer, although the coop from part 2 was pretty sweet. After that, BF3 and the new Ace Combat. still need to pick up KZ3 but that one could wait, I can't stand Rico and the F bombs.

im picking it up day 1 but i dont think the masses will move to buy it. just too many other games coming out. Think about it, the average gamer may only buy 2 or 3 games this holiday. one will be BF3 or MW3, the other being a system exclusive like gears 3 or Uncharted 3. Rpg fans will opt for Skyrim.

Not sure if launching it in september is a great idea, a summer blockbuster would have been nice

I'm glad I'm looking forward to Resistance 3 more than Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 combined. Why? Because I like games with good stories and when I play Resistance 3 I'm going to end up caring more for the characters when I play it.

I'm not too crazy about the guy that we control in part 3. Didn't really like his character in part 2.

R3 will be a day 1 buy for me, the other 2 are just crap-tastic reiterations of what has been done umpteen million times already so I'm not even going to worry about them. It really is unfortunate that there are so many sheepal out there that blindly follow what ever is the most advertised/talked about.

Hopefully R3 will be more like R:FoM, a FAR batter game than R2 IMHO.

In my eyes and hands Resistance is top dog before any other shooter out there at all period. The others have their greatness' , but Resistance is a stand alone perceptive type game, one of a kind. Also being the 1st shooter for PS3, Resistance is kind of the base or, "Where they come up with that?", for all other shooters on the PS3. From the control scheme, to the massive online battles, the alpha is the omega in other words, lol.

Not when everywhere you go has a COD article or story on it.

Anyways, resistance needs to stick to its guns. Now while their sales might not be as high as the COD's of the world, the fans will be pleased.

Plus, if they make a good game and stay consistent with their sequels, eventually the people will come.
