Is There Any Hope For Resistance 3?
Not from a quality standpoint - I remain convinced the game will be great - but just from a financial/sales standpoint.
Look, the entire world is caught up in this Battlefield 3/Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 rivalry, and it's only going to heat up over the next couple of months. Both are shooters. Both come out within a couple weeks of one another (October 25 for BF3 and November 8 for MW3). Both are seeking to push the envelope in the FPS genre. With this much hype, and the chances that both will be excellent, shooter fans will likely want both.
Furthermore, we'll likely be bombarded with footage for both titles until they launch. And that means the expectations will be through the roof; the fans are expecting nothing less than jaw-dropping. Now, where the hell does Resistance 3 squeeze in? Its only hope is that it'll be ready on September 6, a good month and a half before Battlefield 3 arrives. But is that gap big enough? Shooter aficionados are probably preparing to drop $130 on BF3 and MW3, and if I've got my finger on the right pulse, those same gamers are skeptical of R3. Way too skeptical, I say, but oh well...
And of course, Insomniac's new title is exclusive to one platform, which automatically limits sales potential. So when you consider the entire picture, I really have to worry: can Resistance 3 survive? Will it thrive? I'm concerned that even if it turns out great, the gaming world's gaze will remain fixed on BF3 vs. MW3, and R3 will just sort of slide by unnoticed. I really hope it doesn't happen (Insomniac deserves the love), but at this point... I mean, nobody will shut up about BF3 and MW3 and it's only July.
R3 better hope its significant head start is good enough to carve out a niche for itself. Oh, and it better be really, really good.

@WorldEnds: It's the principle. If I buy games with any of the greedy methods, the greedy methods will never change and it will only get worse like it already has. Excluding content from games on purpose just to release as paid DLC, locking content already on the disc just to release the unlock "code" for an extra fee, charging for DLC that should be free and now online pass. If suckers like lawless keep buying/supporting the games that have those methods and not say anything about it, that you can't delete game save might actually happen. Hooray! SUCKERS!

I may be wrong, it may turn out to look absolutely fabulous, but if so then those videos released so far is doing it a *huge* disfavour.

All I am saying is that against the likes of Frostbite and CryEngine you stand very little chance of success with graphics that looks like screen shots from Half-Life.
I even believe that mw3 will have a tweaked engine that will look impressive in at least some aspects. One should not underestimate the outcome of three studios working on the same game.

After black ops came out looking worse than MW2, i wouldnt count on MW3 having some huge tweak that makes it stand out graphically.

Hey I hope I am wrong here, cause because of the coop mode this game offer it's probably going to be bought by me regardless of the graphics. I just am not an optimist in these regards.
Regarding MW3 I believe they feel the competition much stronger now than they felt when Black Ops were created, and act accordingly. I expect mw3 to be pretty darn good actually. One should never underestimate your enemy. (I've preordered bf, not mw btw :))

Either way I know IW has made a few tweaks to the engine to get more in whatever circumstance that may be, and yea DICE seems to have built a great new engine, but Insomniac is more than proven. Were talking about the developers who made everyone talk about toy story type graphics from a video game in Ratchet and Clank. That's my poInt is all.

It's just my honest impression about this particular game that I express here, based on what little we have seen. And frankly, what I have seen, especially that multiplayer demo, looked worse than any recent COD games I've played. Not just visually either, it looked unbalanced and generic.
Please note that I both expect and await someone to knock COD off their throne. It just won't be R3 even if it had been released also for pc/x360, that much I'm afraid I can guarantee.

Honestly all I want from Resistance 3 is a great longer than normal single player story, and MP very similiar to R:FoM and Itll sit on my shelf before CoD (my games are in order by favorite lol) and I'll also be very happy.

I *love* a good story (after all, that's why I love RPGs) but for reasons I can not recall I never checked out the single player campaign in R2.

The co-op was fun though in R2. Did they ever release more missions than what was there in retail? I couldn't get into the MP in R2 so I didn't stay with it long enough to know.

Don't know if there was released any more missions for R2... We never got to finish the coop before we grew tired of it. It was fun up until then though! It was the recycling of the "map loops" that became a bit too repetitive after *many* hours, otherwise we'd play it to the end.
I find campaign coop to be the best coop there is, so I'm very happy about that move in R3.

No story, no campaign, just fight'n'go. :)
I've seen many praised that coop version but my coop buddy and I found it eventually to be too repetitive.
What I prefer is the story, events, and variety of a single player campaign *and* be able to enjoy that with a friend. "A good moment is better shared".

Resistance 3 I will get once the price drops, and for the first time I am very interested in Bioshock 3. It will be a bit of a juggling act to see how I can divide my pennies on a few titles... there is also Trine 2 to think about as well.
So quite a bit here and there to consider.

However, as a fps multiplayer shooter it will hardly make a blip on the radar.
That's my prediction.

The Resistance franchise just isn't that popular to tell you the truth. Same thing could be said about Infamous...neither franchises had good advertising. Sony needs to hype their games more.

more importantly though im worried about quality wise.
i dunno nothing so far has really wowed me about it.
everythings either been OMFG i cant believe they did that, thats freaking stupid!
or meh.
R2 looked freaking sweet, ill never forget the day at E3 where ted walked up on stage and showed us the giant titan battle.
nothing about R3 has jumped out at me like that did, everythings been meh.
i dunno, i just get the sense that insomniac are just running out of ideas for this, that and there trying to get it out of the door ASAP so they can move onto overstrike.
i always said insomniac does not know how to make a bad game.
resitance 2 came bloody close to proving me wrong, but it looks like this will be the first to actually do so.
same thing goes for R&C all for one.
im a massive ratchet fan, if not the biggest one out there!
but all for one just does not excite me at all, just does not look like a ratchet and clank game.
i freaking loved a crack in time, 2nd best in the series and one of the best games on the ps3!
i wish we could of just got a sequel to that, instead of this spinoff nonsense.
as i said above again this just feels like insomniac are trying to get it out the door ASAP so they can get onto overstrike.
i mean insomniac always show off there games constantly, always revealing new weapons which are a staple of insomniac, and especially R&C.
when was the last time they revealed a new weapon for all for one?
i just get the feeling that there not interested in the series at the moment, there just trying to rush it out as fast as possible so they can get on.
why o why did they have to go over to EA?
another developer to add to the third party transition casualty list.
:(

It'll probably help if you play the campaign first to get accustomed to it. I played on Easy to avoid any frustration I might have with it early on. I completed the campaign 3 times - working up to Elite. When I finally went online I immediately did much better than I had with any other shooter. Find it more enjoyable too.

Anyways, resistance needs to stick to its guns. Now while their sales might not be as high as the COD's of the world, the fans will be pleased.
Plus, if they make a good game and stay consistent with their sequels, eventually the people will come.

Of course, R3 will be criminally underrated, and will underperform in a massive way, but such is life. If Sony had released it in June or July it would have been much better, but alas.
