Ben's Week In Review: July 24

This heat wave has to stop. Now.

BioWare, be careful

It's not that I don't believe you, BioWare. It's not that I have doubts about Mass Effect 3. I've never gotten into the franchise, but the games have been undeniably great. Better still, they've been undeniably great for role-playing fans. What you just said about the gameplay being "more action/adventure-y" has disturbed your followers. That bit about one last chance to make the franchise "truly blockbuster" isn't helping, either. Yes, we're aware of that clarification where you said the RPG depth will certainly remain and in fact, it'll be even deeper than past installments. But we've heard similar claims before. From a company called Square Enix.

Furthermore, while I liked Dragon Age II and it was still an RPG (i.e., it played like an RPG should play), we already saw glimpses of "RPG Lite." A set-in-stone character, no equipment (beyond a complete suit of armor) for your allies, and virtually no exploration via world map or anything like that. Now, you're not really going to assist in killing off this genre with ME3's "action/adventure-y" focus, are you, BioWare? What's next? Guns in The Elder Scrolls? It'd become a FPS...

If GTAV uses MotionScan, I'll be HAPPY

I've been a huge supporter of this new technology ever since it blew me away in L.A. Noire. I also talked about how such a tech could advance storytelling in the interactive entertainment world. So to combine it with one of my favorite franchises of all time is just icing on the cake; don't think for a second that GTA can't use it. The series is known for it's gameplay, true, but entries also include big, sweeping storylines and lots of characters. MotionScan would push everything forward. The whole thing would just feel that much more natural and dynamic, and we'd be able to better connect with the characters.

I still wonder why we haven't heard much about GTAV so far. And if Rockstar does plan to implement MotionScan, how far along in development can they be...? That's what worries me a little.

Personal gaming update

So I finally finished inFamous 2; I've been savoring it for a long time but I finally had to beat it. I got all the Blast Shards and completed it as a Hero; I'd like to see the Infamous ending but I don't think I'll have time. I also want to finish Limbo; it's surprisingly long and quite addictive. I just have to conquer the next puzzle! Besides, after the mess that was Call of Juarez: The Cartel, I don't have much to play until Catherine shows up this week. The review scores have been encouraging for that one, and it's quite original, so I'm excited.

We'll let you know when Episode #4 of the PSXE Show arrives in Home. We'll be doing the party on Thursday as per usual; there just aren't enough people around on Saturdays. We've also submitted a group of eight questions (all but one were submitted by readers) to Square Enix, as we promised. Just remember, with translation required, it might take some time. More news coming soon.

Yes, Limbo is quite long and takes up very little space on my HDD, which makes me happy. The more space I have, the better. I'm going to need space for the load of games I'll be getting soon.

Plus, I just saw Bad Teacher tonight. I didn't know Kevin Butler was in it.

I'm just hiding in the air conditioning here in MN, I don't get along with heat. Give me a blizzard over this any day.

I'm not worried about ME3, but I am worried about Dragon Age 3.

I think if Rockstar is using Motionscan it's all under wraps and that's why we haven't seen or heard anything concrete. They would want to make a huge announcement. The game could even be done and just need the faces grafted on for all we know.

I'm playing FEAR2, which has surprised me by being a pretty damn good shooter even if it doesn't handle the horror as well as I'd hoped. I feel more real in it than I do in your typical war game, I actually have a body and legs and stuff. Also bought EDF, which is fun, and Vanquish which I haven't gotten to. I'm up to the third guy in Yakuza 4 and so far the game has a great storyline.

Glad to hear about RE4 and Code Veronica in HD, the new Spartacus, Jurassic Park 4, and a new Underworld (Kate Beckinsale is my woman you bishes). Glad the people who speak English improperly will get Catherine too!

I'm really enjoying Limbo so far! The review pushed me over the edge to download and give it a go.

I personally think the term RPG has been stretched way too far. Just because you can put a few character ability points here or there doesn't make the game an RPG (customization needs to be much more in depth, imo). While I enjoyed both ME3 and DA2, I don't consider them real RPGs. Great games in their own right, but not RPGs.

Heat wave is fine in San Diego! :)

I started up ME2 as isaid I would. Only played for about 2 hours and still doesn't feel like an RPG to me. Feels more about the combat if you ask me. Your in a lot of combat situations, lots of action. That's ok though I'm really liking it. The quests so far don't feel like quests as much as they do say a chapter in a shooter. But again I've only played for 2 hours. I'm hoping I pick up more from the RPG elements even though I'm completely satisfied with it right now.

I prefer fantasy stuff as well, I'd count myself somewhere between the ME faithful and Ben's position of not quite being sucked in by it. But I was impressed enough to play it all the way through and enjoy it. The only sex scene I had was with the tattooed bi*** who was very much human so with respect to Captain Kirk, no green or blue women found their way into my bed.

I kind of wish for a heatwave now... Going to work in the mornings when it's 12 degrees or lower... No.

I do want to get ME2/3, but I've still got DA:O on my shelf barely played, and I want to pick up DA2 to go along with that sooner or later. With those, plus a whole bunch of other games higher on my list, I can't justify them. That being said, a more action/adventure-y feel goes hand in hand with faster pacing, and I don't see how RPG elements can fit it with that well. Maybe I'm wrong and they'll be adding it more engaging elements, rather than upping the pace, but I'll wait for the reviews to pass judgement.

Damnit, I just want R* to say something concrete about GTA: Next. They've been silent too long. And surely, they're not overly busy with this RDR fan pack DLC, L.A. Noire for PC and Max Payne that Agent is more than two years away and the next GTA is further. I want to see them at GamesCom.

Personal Update:
Just finished R&C:ToD. I'll want to go back sooner or later and get the rest of the skill points and finish Challenge Mode, but onwards and upwards. Q4B comes next!
Still on the moon in FFIV. Trying to grind before coming back down to Earth.
I'm planning to finish Sense and Sensibility later tonight, but I don't think that that's going to happen. We're supposed to be having a visitor, and I can't be too rude...
Also, I'll have to see whether I can squeeze in The Godfather Part III sometime later on.
Pretty sure that's all.
Peace.

P.S. Can't tell you how amped I am that Australia is finally going to be getting an R18+ rating. No more bans!

that does not mean there will be no more bans, games with explicit scenes or extreme violence will still get banned.
it just means that the lesser extreme scale will go for the higher rating.
we still need a MA rating, im really worried the other states caving in with SA and removing it totally.
i want a R rating, we NEED a R rating.
but not at the cost of the MA rating!

O, and as for weather you think thats bad go check out the blue mountains!

Well... South Australians are a bit kooky. But I don't think the rest of the country will follow suit. The MA rating will stay in place. The R is for extreme violence and sexual violence, which should cover all games already on the market. Explicit sexual scenes will remain being banned, but they only come about once in a blue moon anyway, and generally only in games dedicated to the topic.

Yeah, stuff that for cold, but at least you're only standing in it. Try being on the back of a ute travelling between 60 and 80 kph in nine degrees. Really not fun. It does make the heat more appealing, but then it's consistently 80-90% humidity. Can't win in the tropics...

The new rating is a blessing but it will be interesting to see if it will make a big difference to retailers here with our inflated prices. The new classification doesn't really change much for me as i buy most of my games overseas online anyway for the price alone but it is still good to see that adults won't be left hanging by the short & curlies by our big brother government.

But remember this guys, games that are currently RC will stay that way unless (A) The publisher decides to resubmit the game under the new scheme or (B) WB release a special edition under the new guidelines. Games like Left 4 Dead 2 that were censored however are now allowed to be fully uncensored with the new rating. So enjoy shooting dead things in the face without them disappearing before they hit the ground. & don't worry about South Australia, noone really cares about them & they're the only state that has the ability to conduct their own classification scheme which is why crusty old wheelchair bound John Rau has got this senile idea of removing an MA15. It will suck for gamers in that state but not for the rest of the country, so rest easy.

So for the few unfornate Australians who don't own MK yet will be able to pull spinal cords out of arses soon enough.

As for weather, i will take your cold temperature anyday over Perth's endless desert sun. ;)

Of course, I'm from an area that will hit 100 in the summer, and in the winter... well... usually only around 5-15 degrees, but I distinctly remember a "snow day" in high school where with the wind chill the temperature was -60 F. Kevin,
There's supposedly an inquiry already going on with the prices of games being so high in comparison to much of the rest of the world, so I hope that ends up bringing it down somewhat, but the new rating certainly won't help that end. But yeah, kinda sucks that it won't automatically be retroactively applied to all games that were banned, or modified, but it'd be too much work to figure out which one might still be relevant and wanted and which ones they're better off not bothering with.

Underdog,
That sounds bloody awful! Remind me to never, ever, ever come to Canada.

Anon,

lol that was a freak of nature thing. Set a record in our area, I think. It went straight back to hovering near 25-35 F right after two days of brutal cold. It was like some freakish draft from the north. Usually, air comes up from the south or west.

Typically, in the summer, We experience weather between 78-100. In the winter, in Ontario where I am now (as opposed to high school) it's usually very close to 32. Snow comes, melts, comes again... melts. Southwestern Ontario winters aren't the stereotypical "Canadian Winter".

Speaking of playing through the game on Hard, World. I did it, but didn't get the trophy. Really annoying. And you can probably get away with only doing half a dozen of the side missions to get enough XP to get you the powers that you need to hammer through the game. It's not that difficult.

I have a similar disease but it affects me more in inFamous than in RPGs. I see 4 blast shards on my ping and I can't do anything until I get them even though I have the blast shard trophy already.

Like World, I'm not worried about ME3 at all. With DA3 I'm more curious than worried because I feel Bioware will really want to make up for DA2 not being as good as it could have been. There's no way they're 100% satisfied with it's outcome.

In gaming news I'm finally moving on from FFIX and hopefully going to start maybe Paracite Eve or Wild Arms. IDK yet. Also, I think my PS1 RPG collection is complete. I own everything except either the ones I'm not interested in (Saga Frontier) or the ones I can't afford (Tales of Destiny). Go me! On PS3 mainly replaying Infamous 2. My GotY so far. =<.<=

Just finished Black Ops & MOH.
Got to say I enjoyed MOH better, played it on normal & now thinking of trying it on Tier 1.

Yes it's tough for me to choose. On one hand black ops actually had somewhat of an intriguing story line to it. On the other MoH story definitely hits you as the player a lot harder, more meaningful. Black ops had the better action though, but MoH was far more fluid from a story standpoint and the characters were far more meaningful. Gameplay was a lot better in MoH also, felt more realistic. I really enjoyed MoH definitely under rated. Better graphics and I think that would have helped it out a lot.

Gonna buy mk on Monday, already downloading the 3 free dlc's, then I gotta put down $25 more for the rest of the dlc. Maybe not all of it though, I'm not sure yet. But, I'm looking forward to klassic skin reptile. He's such a B.A.

@world : nice mk1 movie referance bud.

@aaronisbla : isn't there a skin that comes with those dlc's? Or does it just make your game recognize those skins so you can play against them?

Either way, that will still allow me to have more peopl to play against if I decide not to get some of the dlc's. No biggie.

Yeah, the whole ME3 thing and trying to hit it big with the mainstream just isn't doing anything for me. At this point I have to just hope for the best. I think even at the worst, I'll enjoy more than most games.

Limbo is pretty interesting. Having played a bit of it I can really feel it's artistic presentation convincingly. I think that element alone is what makes the game work as well as it does. It serves as another example of how powerful artistic presentation can have a powerful influence over the users who engage games.

PGU: I've been real busy for most of the week so I haven't done a whole lot of gaming. I did, however, get this iOS game called Backstab. It's the closest thing to a Assassin's Creed formatted game on the phone. While it falls short of AC in basically every way, and it unabashedly rips off so many elements from AC, as it is, it is a exciting step forward for mobile gaming as it seemingly feels like what a game of that type would've felt like on Xbox'ish hardware from years ago. But it does well to expand the promise of what the future can hold for handheld communication devices and gaming.

I also have been playing Bastion. Real good stuff with a thick personality and intriguing action RPG design. I'll be reviewing that one.

yeah but cmon man, that makes the "ending" about 15 seconds.

I was not happy about what went down with Stokes either, but I guess it was part of the story. Overall I think it had a good story, a tad cliche but it resonates a lot more with me than a collection of schizophrenic battle sequences in a war story that is only loosely connected. *ahem*

Bought Little Big Planet 2 for my wife and i. That game is awesome!

I think next on my missed game roster is killzone 3, cant really think of anything else. id get DA2 but with all the mixed opinions i hear about it, being rpg lite, i think ill wait for a price drop or some kind of version with all the dlc

Actually haven't been playing a lot of games due to netflix and other ways of watching shows. Recently got hooked on an somewhat old show Nip Tuck. awesomesauce. Also trying to get caught up on Dexter before the new season hits, in season 4.

Besides those, just waiting on Spartacus, enjoying True Blood, and waiting on The Walking Dead to come back

edit: guess there is crysis 2, but ill wait to grab it on the cheap on amazon

PGU: Just Platinumed Infamous 2 this afternoon. Shaking my head at the 7.5 to 8.5's given to this game. I ask what game did they play?? I think anything less than 9 is unfair. Sucker Punch outdid themselves. And I'm glad they didn't put MP into the game.

Personally, I give it a 9.5 for an open world game with superhero powers, it was outstanding. Better than the first, and going in I was doubting they could recapture that original IP magic they had with the first. But they went and made it better. Bravo! Anybody who hasn't played this yet, hop to it!!!

The only good news I can report my PSP is coming back sometime next week. Sony got it Thursday and they shipped it out Friday night.

PS3 got a couple of options 1. I found another place that does repairs for 60 bucks so I found two local places. 2.Sending it back to Sony after I collect some debts people owe me in another week. But the down side both local repair shops offer 30 day warranties.

im not worried about ME3, bioware know how to make a fantastic game, and id like to think they learned there lesson with DA2.
even if it does turn into a action shooter it does not really matter, because its never been the gameplay that makes ME great, its the characters and story.
as long as there present in full force it will be one of next years best games!

im all for GTAV using motionscan as long as it wont add too much time to the development process, and they go back to the GTA SA or vice city roots.
i want GTAV to have the technological side of GTA IV, awesome graphics, but have the fun of the previous games.
the para sailing off high buildings, jet packs, flying jets, racing through the streets, getting into massive firefights with the cops, doing vigilante missions, smashing up on coming traffic, flying over ramps as fast as possible!
THATS GTA!
though to be honest i find it more likely for scooby doo to wake me up tomorrow and serve me breakfast!
so im not getting my hopes up.
50K says it will be exactly like GTAIV, all flash and no fun.
AKA a michael bay film.

im glad i picked up the witcher 2, otherwise id be bored sh*tless by now!
40+ hours into it, and im not even close to finishing!
so nice to finally have a fantasy action adventure RPG, a proper game that takes me back to the way the genre should be!
other then that, a guy i know in parra says hes getting some copies of desus ex in either tomorrow or tuesday.
hope so, ive been dying to give it a try!
finally the game alpha protocol should of been!
i just hope they take it as far as alpha protocol did, the thing that made it so great was the massively branching story and characters.
in most games what you do, how you do it, what you say, how you say it, changes little.
but in alpha protocol its totally different, it actually changes ALLOT!
one of the very first missions you meet a real b*tch, a real pushy threatening stuck up b*tch!
but if your nice to her, and try not to piss her off she nets you some kick a$$ gear!
wish all games could be like that, not like infamous 2!
one thing they really drummed into our heads when i went to the launch event was they really wanted the choices to matter.......
wow, do i steal the blast shard or let the innocent man go?
oh, how do you sleep at night with such hard decisions!?

thats one thing all games should really start doing.
have multiple ways of completing a level for example stealth taking enemies out silently, guns blazing blowing the place to pieces, or inconspicuous where you just avoid detection but touch no one.
exactly what deus ex human revolution does.
have how you complete missions effect what happens, what rooms you get access to, what gear you get access to, the way people react to you, and who you meet.
thats one thing alpha protocol did so well.
biggest problem with that though is allot of games dont do it very well.

allot of games give you the option, but then make it really hard to do everything else.
splinter cell conviction for example.
its easy and quick and obvious how to complete a area guns blazing.
but steathfully depending on the level some are really hard to find where the hiding spots are.
what it should be like is like crysis 2.
turn on nano vision and boom your shown every possible way to finish the mission, that way you get to choose which one you want to do, not the game forcing you to do one because you cant figure out how to do it another way.

another thing allot of those types of games dont do well is showing the consequences, and showing the difference.
GTA for example would say you can either do this or this.
well, whats the difference?
what happens if i choose this over that?
where alpha protocol does.
for example one of the choices is do you save a specific person very dear to you, or do you save some hostages.
its obvious what the choices are, and once you make the decision it shows you what would of happened if you chose the other one.
so it clearly displays what your choosing, then shows you both sides of the coin.

thats the reason im really looking forward to desus ex human revolution.
many games have promised to do what it promises, the multiple pathways and your actions changing the game.
but this time, it looks like its actually going to do it!
not like heavy rain where only 2 or 3 choices really mattered, and at the end they really did not change much.
it adds massive replay value to the game, you litterally have to play through the game at least 3 times to see everything!
now thats the way to stop people from trading in your games!
not this online bass bull sh*t!

I've been playing Shadows of The Damned. I never really heard of it but saw it today, browsed the cover & thought "This looks like my kinda thing" Ignoring the di** jokes in which there are plenty (a weapon called Boner... & when it's upgraded it's called Big Boner......I mean, really!?)the game is just rad. Suda51 is a genius & has creativity seeping from his arse. I can't believe i never really heard of this game beforehand, because imo it's an absolute hidden gem. The bosses are really out there & light Vs darkness mechanic works surprisingly well.

I am also anticipating the Silent Hill collection but remain a little miffed because they're redoing the voice work, but i think it's because they owe the actor of James Sunderland from SH2 a small fee but i can't be totally sure.

Being the fighter gimp that i am i also continue to watch every video of Tekken Tag 2, Soul Calibur V, Street Fighter X Tekken & King of Fighters XIII to see which characters have been nerfed & which ones have turned beast.

Good time to be a fighter fan.

I'd have to say SH3 is my personal fave Silent Hill but in a different way to how much i liked the others.

I like SH3 because it actually disturbed me (& no game has ever done that) but i liked SH2 because the story was one of the most emotional plotlines in recent memory. So they appeal to me in various ways.

I found one segment of Bens article particularly interesting, quoting:
"you said the RPG depth will certainly remain and in fact, it'll be even deeper than past instalments. But we've heard similar claims before. From a company called Square Enix."

This troubles me, cause I understand SE where *the* kings of console rpgs earlier generations?
I got to admit I've not paid full attention to the earlier FF-related articles since I've got no relation to the FF games. But how similar are the claims from SE? What did they claim prior to FF13?

I don't think it'll be as sidetracked, they have screenwriter Mark Protosevich from I am Legend attached to the project and working closely with the development team, and I doubt it will suffer the same issues as Uncharted since EA is keen on making Mass Effect into a "blockbuster" franchise.

PGU: Just started on both Killzone 3 (using my Move controller!) and Dead Space 2.

So far I'm struggling with the Move controller but I will not give up yet. My biggest complaint is however the gameplay, it's pressure *nonstop*, not a single breather. Makes me miss the pacing of Crysis 2...

With Dead Space 2 I am surprised by the quality of this production. I knew it was good but did not expect it to be this good - I fully understand it's metascore of 90%. I'm very impressed.
It's scary stuff though. I *hope* I will be able to continue, but I am far from sure of it.

I'll take cold over heat any day, you can put on layers until you look like a self-defense teacher and walk out to the middle, of what remains anyway, of the tundra and be fine but you can only take so much off.
PGU:
I got infamous 2 a bit later but it completely pulled me away from the Witcher 2 so I'm still almost done my 2nd playthrough. 1rst was Neutral, Good, on normal, 2nd is Neutral, Evil, on hard. The Bioleeching can really help but I miss that SPOILER
Ice Launch for climbing in a jiffy END SPOILER.
Looks like it will be added to my short list of platinums, since I don't care seriously about trophies.
Very nice to see that they took my, or atleast similar, criticisms to heart though since one of the last powers you get takes the pain out of finding those last few blast shards since my Infamous 1 file still lacks the very final shard from getting platinum.
