Ben's Week In Review: July 31
Crap. Birthday this week. ...don't really wanna talk about it.
Bowling says MW3 vs. BF3 is nothing new...well...
In some ways, Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling is right when he says Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 vs. Battlefield 3 isn't really anything new. As he says, it's two passionate groups of fans going at it, and if we assume that macroscopic viewpoint, then he has a point. But you know, in a lot of ways, this isn't exactly like the Super Nintendo vs. Genesis, or Sonic vs. Mario or Final Fantasy vs. Metal Gear Solid. No, we're talking about extremely similar games; both are military shooters, both have massive budgets, and both appeal to the same kinds of gamers. Plus, both titles come out within two weeks of each other.
I mean, I suppose it's true that passionate gamers will always throw down with passionate gamers that support other titles and genres. That will never change. But to say there isn't anything at least a little unique about BF3 vs. MW3 is...well, silly.
Damnit, give me Mirror's Edge 2. Now.
I know not many people around here care, but Mirror's Edge remains one of my favorite games of the generation. It was a little flawed, but it set the foundation for something truly special in the future. And you know, for what it was, it worked extremely well, and I've never minded trial-and-error gameplay. I think they could've done a lot more with the storyline, I believe the mechanics can be refined and built upon, and I believe something like the Frostbite 2 engine could really help. I know engines don't make for a great game, but DICE has proven themselves again and again. Provided they don't change too much, a sequel could be fantastic.
If you never got a chance to play it way back when, I strongly suggest picking it up. There isn't much out there right now, anyway, and I'm sure you can find Mirror's Edge cheap.
Personal gaming update
I was really impressed with Catherine but it's hard, so I'm still hammering away at it. I'm not sure if I'll finish it but I really want to see how the story ends. This is a truly original experience that is surprisingly addictive, and it's just really refreshing. I also have high expectations for Deus Ex: Human Revolution; I fully intend to go all stealthy with my character, too. I recall all my Deus Ex adventures with a particular fondness; I didn't fall in love with them, per se, but I always enjoyed myself.
Stay tuned for Resistance 3 beta codes (should get them on Monday) and Episode #4 of our PSXE Show. When that goes up in PlayStation Home, we'll put Episode #3 up on our YouTube Channel. And we're also waiting patiently for our questions to come back from Square Enix...wonder what those answers will be like...

Unfortunately I won't be at this psxe show, or any psxe show in the near for seeable future. My buddies movin out of the complex, so no more net until I get a better paying job.
PGU: I hit gr8 on wkc with all 4 of my rebirths, due to the fact that I found my flash drive with my older data on it and decided to go with that little bit. But alas, its gonna be hard to gr-up with no one to run quests with. As it is I gotta level up to beat bsc2.
I'm also playing a little bit of infamous, and mortal kombat. Both games are sick.
ill be commin around to see what I missed on the shows. Take care everyone.

MW and BF... whatever.
Mirrors Edge I have yet to make a real dent in but I like the idea. Though I must say I think heavy trial and error gameplay should forever be a thing of the past. That's another reason to ignore Dark Souls. I can't bear repeating myself, so you can imagine how I feel about spending precious time doing the same things over and over.
Soooo yeah I'm loving Far Cry 2, it's ten times more like being in a warzone than any typical FPS. I'm also kind of wrapped up into American McGee's Alice that came with Alice 2. It's super flawed as it is old, but I can't stop playing it!
Resistance 3 is getting more of my attention because it is converting Resistance haters so it must be pretty amazing despite that bad demo.
Can anyone fill me in on the status of Tales of Xillia for US?

There's only one thing that really concerns me about R3, and that is how brown it looks. I mean, I've ragged on games in the past for it, but geez, Insomniac looks to be going for overkill on it.
Xillia is unconfirmed for any release outside of JP, though Namco has said that they will localise it if fan demand is strong enough.

Mw vs BF is a non issue. I will probably rent COD and buy BF,but thats just how I roll.
Mirror Edge 2 would be nice but I am not holding my breath.
PGU- Playing Dragon Age-Origins Ultimate Edition. Now I know why I havent touched DA2 for a month now. DA-O is just better on all accounts. Looking forward to Rage and R3.

I'm Actually looking forward to Playing both MW3 and BF3 to compare the two. I don't reckon I will play them online though because im just not of a fan on online playing, I'm a solo bloke, Plus hearing all the spooks dribble crap and trash talk does my head in.
PGU - I picked up copies of both dead space 1 & 2 earlier in the week and I just finished dead space 1, and man did it scare 8 shades of crap through me!! Surround sound in the dark nearly tipped me over the EDGE!! Good story and atmosphere LOVED IT!
Started playing dead space 2 last night. My early impressions so far are good but i dunno..........it does not have that freaky X factor as the previous....now I feel the urge to return..........CATHCYA!!!

Honestly, I'm a bit worn out the constant fanboy wars. I know that we all have our sides and preferences, but it's getting boring. Can't people just be interested in what interests them without attacking those with differing viewpoints? That being said, there really hasn't been any direct competition like EA is lining up against MW3. Even though DICE and IW have both gone on record as saying they're not trying to compete with, or outdo, the other due to their differing styles, EA is still trying to push it, and I'm tired of it. Let the comparisons come when both are released, please.
Mirror's Edge was like Assassin's Creed for me. An excellent platform, but uninspiring on its own. That's the main reason that I'm hanging out for a sequel. I know that it will be better.
PU:
Haven't been playing much this past week, I've just been feeling a bit down, and now I've caught a cold, which isn't helping any.
That being said, I'm working on R&C:Q4B and only just posted up my review for ToD whenever it gets approved.
I finished reading Sense and Sensibility on Tuesday and am now just under halfway through Dracula.
And still grinding on the moon in FFIV.
Hopefully I'll be back up to my regular participation levels this week, but I'm not sure of that much.
Peace.

I look forward to playing MW3, and I'm willing to give BF3 a try. I haven't played through a BF game before, so maybe BF3 can be my first.
I'm all about Deus Ex. It's looking pretty hot.
PGU: Just been doing more Fallout 3. Also took some time to do From Dust, and also a bit of Madden.

PGU: I finally finished Dragon Age: Origins. I can't believe it took me this long, but the goal was to say I beat it and I did. Thank god I found that unlimited source of elfroot or I would have never had enough health poultices.
I ordered Crysis 2 to tied me by untill Deus Ex hits. And sure enough I shipped it to the wrong address. fml. The wait of a few extra days is killing me!
In the mean time I thought I would play through U2 just for the hell of it and I been giving the MAG demo a try.
Why oh why did I have it shipped to Maine and not NY? :(
And happy birthday Ben! The # is just a technicality. I'm on my to a quarter century but we all you can have fun at any age.

The more I see and hear about Deus Ex Human Revolution the more excited I get. Lookin really good. Stealth all the way!
PGU: Finished Dead Space earlier in the week and I think it's a really great game. The last few moments are terrific and remind me a lot of my favorite horror movies like The Descent. I was totally scared for the rest of the night. :P
I recently started the PS1 RPG Wild Arms and am about 5 hrs in. I like it quite a bit. It has some cool adventure elements like solving puzzles that require you to place bombs in front destructable objects to reveal passageways. Also like the wild west theme.
I just started my short vacation so hopefully I'll be able to play through a ton of stuff now that I have some time. =<.<=

So far, I'm liking it and I've gotten all the way to the part where as a Na'vi right of passage, I have to conquer flying one of their Banshee's, & I got stuck on it. And of course, just like piloting the 2-Helicopter chase scene in GTA4, I suck at flying either one.
But if I get the chance tonight, I'll go back to Avi' & try, try, try, again.

modern warfare 3 vs battlefield 3, battlefield is the clear winner for me and i'll be playing it day 1.
i wasnt really sold on mirrors edge, i tried it but wasnt into it. borrowed it from gamestop and i got bored playing. i'll give it credit because it did something new. i guess it just wasnt my type of game. i would give the sequel a try when i got a gaming drought.
PGU: I FINALLY GOT MASS EFFECT 2 TO PLAY! i had to put the game into 480p to make the game work without any problems. I saw someone on the bioware forums having problems with dragon age 2 on pc. i tried what he did and sure enough no freezing, no infinite loading screens, and no corrupt save data. now i'm moving forward with mass effect 2 and jack is pissed at me because i took miranda's side of the arguement. i had to because shepard is trying to nail her. i wanted kelly but i guess i messed up somewhere. i want to get mass effect 3 but not enough to want it on day one, or year 1, or even new. i have no faith in bioware at all now.
I have resonance of fate in my backlog and i bought james blood bloodstone from gamestop for $10 dollars new. i dont know when i'll get to them because i'm still working on mass effect 2. I'm also planning to "borrow" captain america, catherine, portal, and shattered dimensions some time after mass effect 2.

yes, i know it's late, but i haven't had a chance to really sit down and post about it. so here it is.
July 23rd weekend, my friend and i drove all the way up to charleston SC. about a 7 hour drive (400 miles) from where i live in florida.
'what for?' you're probably thinking....
yeah, it is a pretty freaking long and boring drive. traffic is hell at points, and at others, you are the only person on the road in the middle of nowhere.
so why the trouble?
we went and saw Truckfighters.
Truckfighters?? what's that? is that worth driving all that way for one show? one band? one night?!?!
hell yeah. and i would do it again.
desert / fuzz rock band from sweden. really badass.
it was their first US tour, and the charleston show was the last gig before they went home. they seriously pulled out all the stops. best rock show i have ever been to! i've never seen a band rock so hard live. plus we got to meet them and we talked to them for a bit. they were really chill dudes.
hopefully they'll make their way back to the states soon. :)
fett som fan! say that when you go to sweden ;)
side note:
the band that toured with them, Valley of the Sun (from cincinnati OH), was pretty awesome.

I have recently been playing FFIV: The Complete Collection on the PSP...I have a really bad confession to make, I like The After Years mroe than the main game... Since playing the Interlude and The After Years, The characters have grown on me and the events are quick and sharp. Being fair I have only played the 1st mission, & now it seems like I have to play through with all the other characters before I can progress from where that ended, but so far, I have really enjoyed it.

hes right, people are just passionate about what they like simple as that.
oh and its cool to hate whats popular, and well whats more popular then COD?
i really want to see a mirrors edge 2 as soon as possible.
though if there going to do it, they need to make the levels allot better thought out.
i remember spending days on the level where you sneak into a van and end up in a closed car park.
cars on both sides, several rows and cops in each row and all you can do is run right down the middle.
hey, heres 30 guys waiting to shoot me so why dont i run right past them?
thats todays common sense for ya!
im having so much fun with the battlefield 3 alpha, have not enjoyed a MP game like this since, well, EVER!
wont say anything else simply because were under NDAs and i dont want EA knocking my door down at 3 in the morning, quite a few people have already been kicked for leaking info.
im having a blast with deus ex human revolution though.
its a really fun game when it wants to be, the levels are just really inconsistent.
some levels you could go through stealthfully with ease and not too much longer then the other options.
other levels its the complete opposite!
perfect example of ease would be the warehouse.
there is so much cover, ventelation systems, containers, underground passageways, so much you can use to avoid detection you dont need to touch a single soul!
and it wont take much longer then going in banzai.
other levels like the cop shop is the total opposite, no cover, literally impossible to finish the level without silencing a few guards.
its really annoying, its like your playing 2 totally different games!
one minute your sucking on a sweet lolly, then the next your sucking on one so sour your face turns inside out!
after getting a taste of the well designed levels it just makes you resent half of the game!
kinda like DMC4, i was constantly wishing i could just ditch nero and go with dante, then as soon as i got to dante i wanted to do the opposite.
another thing that gets really annoying is the way hacking is dealt.
there is so much sh*t you can hack, you would be there for a day just hacking everything in one level!
but allot of the things are useless.
if i had a nickle for every time i hacked a system to have everything locked, or nothing there at all, or just have some useless random emails, id be putting bing lee to shame!
one would assume oh this is a level 3, thats a level 1, so common sense would tell you the level 3 has more valuable stuff then 1 right?
WRONG!
in the cop shop level 1 computer was level 3 and only had a camera i could turn off, that was it!
another computer was level 1 but had emails in there that had codes for the laser system.
turn off a camera, or turn off the whole buildings laser system so i could now access areas i otherwise would not be able to do.
which ones more valuable?
yea, thats what i thought!
its just really silly, we need a way to gauge which ones are worth hacking and which ones are not.
maybe show us what we could do with it if we hacked it, then let us choose if its worth the time or not.
other then that, ive been trying to finish ms splosion man.
im so glad i bit the bullet and downloaded it, i was not going to after how much splosion man pissed me off, but this is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier!
im only on the 2nd world so maybe i should not be counting my chickens before they hatch, but so far its been allot more enjoyable then the original.
i wish they would do a full retail release next time, and instead of having just a simple single splode to move around, add in different things to add a little more depth and variety to the game.
maybe have your standard splode, then a higher one, then a further one but keeps your height low.
there, theres 3 new puzzle elements they could add to the game.
just feels too simplistic, too repetitive just taking the same elements, the same puzzles and repeating them for the 3 worlds.
awesome idea, but they could take it SO much further!
hopefully they do, the DL titles are great but theres so much they can do with the series, and i really hope they do.
o, and i cant finish without this community service announcement.
anyone playing their games for extended time in 3D may want to stop now.
i had my optometrist appointment last week, after doing a few tests he had this worried look on his face.
ive always had trouble seeing things at a distance, i never really totally focus on them they always stay slightly blurry.
after doing those tests first thing he said to me was what did you get for chrissy?
i told him a new TV.
he said, oh just a guess it would not be a 3D TV would it?
i said yea, why?
he shook his head, and said yea you may want to give that up for a while its making your eyes worse.
apparently it can end up rotting your optic nerves after extended prolonged use, and he says thats why every time i go to bed at night i cant read my clock.
i just thought it was because i was tired and had sleep all in my eyes, but apparently thats whats doing it.
i have noticed in the last few months i have to get up closer to things before i can read them, and im getting allot more sore eyes and headaches then i normally do.
hmmmmmmm, i think im done for a while.
funny how $ony and co always forget to tell you these things when selling you these products............

Kind of feel the same way about Catherine as you Ben, wondering if I'll finish it. The story has me by the balls but can not make it past he 5th Nightmare. I don't think switching the mode to easy will help all that much either.
The thing they should have done is instead of just showing a new technique and describing it, is let you practice it too. Might make the game a little more manageable.
