Ben's Week In Review: August 21
I almost can't believe the fall rush is nearly upon us...September is hardly bare, and after that... Dear God.
MW3 vs. BF3...I'm totally on the fence
Not only am I on the fence concerning each game's potential quality (Battlefield 3 may have the single-player edge while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 might have the multiplayer advantage), but I'm also unsure about all this campaigning. As I said when we reported on EA's bold statements, EA vs. Activision is starting to feel a lot like a political campaign...and it isn't a nice campaign. As time goes on, I can only imagine that the dirt will continue to fly and things may reach a fever pitch before either game drops. On the one hand, this feud is bound to draw huge attention from just about everywhere, and as they always say, any recognition is good for an industry.
Yeah, there's an argument against that, of course, but visibility is visibility. At the same time, I'm wondering if the mud-slinging really is good for gaming. In my eyes, EA vs. Activision is just a pissing match between two ridiculously wealthy corporations, each of whom are bound to make a barrel-full of money on their respective productions. Activision might make a few more barrels, but who cares? And what are we really arguing about at this point? I'm starting to lose interest.
So we're stuck with the new Dante, huh?
Being a big Devil May Cry fan, I was one of many who were none too pleased with Dante's new heroin-addict design. And for a while, I thought the backlash might be big enough for Ninja Theory to take notice, as Sucker Punch did when gamers called them out for Cole's unnecessary overhaul for inFamous 2. But obviously, the Heavenly Sword developer is sticking with the new Dante. It's interesting to note, however, that Capcom is responsible for the fresh - albeit weird - look. So we need to make sure we direct our venom in the correct direction. But I only have one qusetion; it's the same question I had when I saw the new Cole: Why?!
It just makes zero sense. Lara Croft's redesign for the Tomb Raider reboot does make sense, as they're going for a different sort of feel, atmosphere and style. And she's obviously still Lara. But we're supposed to believe that's a young Dante? And you're not really altering the action focus; why alter one of the most appealing aspects of the DMC series? Dante?
Personal gaming update
Well, this is an interesting one. I didn't get a chance to completely finish Catherine because the end-of-summer upswing has already begun here at PSXE central. The four games I'm playing right now are:
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten
- ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection
- God of War Origins
Obviously, these games aren't out yet but reviews will be forthcoming when the embargoes lift. Just so you're not in the dark, the embargo for Deus Ex is up on Monday (expect a review for Tuesday), Origins is embargoed until August 29, and ICO/SotC is under embargo until September 8. There is no embargo for Disgaea 4, though, so expect a review for that one this week.
And after that, Resistance 3 and Dead Island, among others. I'm glad there were only two games I couldn't finish (Catherine and Dragon Age II) before this mess began. Because the bottom line is that I won't be playing exactly what I want until the end of the year. Well, there will be plenty of times when work and pleasure mix, though, so... ;)

I totally understand the fan backlash against Dante cuz I was a douche-Cole hater. I'm just glad I didn't have a huge attachment to the other Dante. He was cool but I like this new guy too. Honestly I prefer skinny heros that are unusually strong (Cloud) to beefy ones (Marcus Fenix). I used to change my hair color a lot, never had the guts to go white though ;)
This week I wrapped up Mirrors Edge, it was really cool but also really aggravating. I'm going through Vanquish and it's good but it's so generic I'm just gonna sell it when I'm done. After our discussions this week I put Assassin's Creed II in and restarted it. I have full identified my issues with it and am starting to reconcile them in such a way as to enjoy it for what it is. Thankfully for my ego I wasn't wrong, those issues are there and not my imagination. I'm glad to say I am liable to be a big fan once the gameplay is able keep up with me.
Can't wait for that Dead Island review. That's the only one that has to prove itself. I reeeeeally want it to be good.

do what i do, borrow from gamestop. buy a used game then return it within 7 days. if you want it buy a new game. you can also the try before you buy at best buy. you tell them you want to try a game, they'll put it in a ps3 to play. if you want it they'll sell you the game you just opened. if not, nothing lost.
so far my 50 bucks allowed me to play portal 2, dynasty warriors gundam 2, record of agarest war zero, and captain america. and i still got my 50 bucks back.

yeah, i try to not make it obvious that i'm doing that. theres a bunch of gamestops close to me so i just buy a game from one then return to another. i borrowed those games within a month though and they never said anything about it. i did tell them what i didnt like about the game, not necessary if i liked it or not. i also preorder from them to get the preorder bonus. when they ask why i'm returning the new game next day i just tell them i found a much better deal, what can they do about that?
@world
i buy the game used and take advantage of their used game policy. a gamestop manager actually turned me into this "borrowing" method. basically you buy a used game and have 7 days to return it for a full refund. their actual words to me is "buy a used game, if you dont like it, return it for a full refund within 7 days." so i buy it used, beat it within a week, return it and tell them a bs excuse about what i dont like about it and move on. you have to buy a used game from them to use this policy. if you want to be safe, just wait about a week between each purchase so they wont realize what you're doing. i dont see it as exploiting their system, its more like i'm taking FULL advantage of the options they give me.

Sure after I got into the helicopter we ended up getting shot down moments later and we all died but it was pretty sweet that my buds (I'm pretty sure they were drunk) chose to risk their artificial lives for me even though I was a moron and wanted to play Rambo and sorta left the Squad.

Yep, the whole DmC thing isn't setting well with me either. I just don't get it. I always thought one of DMC;s most defining characteristics was just how defined the franchise's stylistic strengths were. It gleamed Japanese art design and stylish flare. Did anyone actually not like that about DMC prior to this makeover? I can't say I've been an ardent fan of DMC's play forever, I'm just not all for depth that has emphasis on doing things "stylish" over effective, Bayonetta is the same way, but it definitely always presented itself attractively, well, until now. To be frank, and a bit self-centered, I hope this DmC reboot suffers a grizzly demise in sales, can it really top like the 4million DMC4 netted? I hope not. This way Capcom straightway sets this franchise back to it's proper form.
PGU: Well, my laptop showed up early on Tuesday. It's been like a long lost reunion of sorts. Odd, because I never really saw myself going back, but as fate would have it, a necessity for a discrete Open GL graphics chip in a Windows environment made it all too inviting to re-engage. I hit up the Crysis demo right away to test the power of my system. Thankfully, the i5 and 6770m combo is plenty powerful to push it at 768p w/2xMSAA with all settings on high with great finesse. Seeing the circa-3 million triangle processing power of the Cry-engine is a site to behold, as suddenly, the 1.2million peak per-frame output of Uncharted 2 suddenly doesn't seem so high.
Coupled with enough grass and tree foliage that would dull the blades of a Huskavarna lawnmower, the tech convinces me it resides somewhere in-between this gen and the next.
Anyway, I don't have any money to buy Crysis just yet, so I'll just keep doing my thing with Fallout 3 and Tekken ;)

I suspect I'll be done with FO3 this next week.
But I already have an opinion of LO for ya'
If you like traditional jRPG design, get it. It's got a smart combat system, great music, and interesting characters. I love Jansen. The voiced performances and cinematic presentation screams the bizzareo Japanese way of doing things. You know, the wierd overly flamboyant stereotypes and awkwardly emotionally frank dialogue that makes me think, 'any person I know wouldn't actually say things like that, but okay' but it's an oddity of the East I've come to accept, and almost sort of like at times. THough, my wife is always quick to poke fun at it's lines with antagonizing one-liners.
If you're fortunate enough to have a functional 360, pick LO up from Gamestop for like $16.

Qubex, cool, so you'll probably have a Quadro workstation graphics chip then? Those can be pretty powerful. I'm sure you'll be impressed running many of this gen's multi-plats at resolutions and detail settings that are a good stretch above the console norm. I tried the Mass Effect 2 demo and on my machine it runs with all detail settings maxed at 1080p with a framerate that far exceeds 30FPS. But alas, while it's all very cool, the real excitement for me can only begin with the next console cycle, as all the top productions are led there anymore. I think of Crysis/Warhead as the last of the tech progressive PC offerings. Now anymore I can only really look forward to the PC-side stuff when whatever the current console gen has baked long enough so PC ports can be brought up to snuff. Not to mention avoiding breaking the bank to get hardware to push the ports well enough.
So while this PC stuff breathes new life into this gen for me, I know it's really something of an intercession before console cycles.

My game collection, even though small, will still be bigger than the PC collection. I think there are very few games I would want on the PC, maybe a few good shooters like BF3. In the interim I will smack that game up on the PS3. There are also a good few back catalogue PS3 exclusives I want as well, including the upcoming Uncharted 3...

The problem is that even if it scores really well, once you lose the original fans you kind of screw yourself no matter how good it is.

i mean now dante is half deamon half angel?
crapcom have already destroyed all of my favourite series, even DMC4 was pretty disappointing.
i mean how can you have a DMC game without vergil?
especially a game so focused over his sword!
still slugging away at the witcher 2, my god when am i going to finish this game!?
and there adding new features in the 2.0 update,my god im going to be here till the apocalypse trying to finish it!
speaking of embargos whats with the sudden up rise of them?
not even a few years ago games use to be getting reviews weeks, if not a month or so in advance!
and that was pretty much from everywhere!
now though you get maybe one or two a few weeks out, then have to wait till release day to read the majority of them.
deus ex for example first review came out over a month ago!
so why cant everyone else get their reviews out?
just seems like a shady tactic to try and get more preorders, but here it f*cking sucks donkey balls!
here if you want to get a game on release you have to preorder it simple as that, if you dont you will be waiting weeks for the 2nd sometimes 3rd shipment before you can grab it!
so im forced to go preorder games not knowing if there going to be any good or not.
o and speaking of resistance 3 surprise surprise its been leaked!
who said the PC is the platform with the rampant piracy issues?

EA wants to bring attention to their game. And with all that said, how many will they sell with the superior game? Maybe 8 million? How many did BF2 sell?

Also, if you gold levels on normal, you can skip them on the next playthrough. Or just switch to easy and blow through them. By the 3rd playthrough you just be skipping everything and getting right in to the puzzles.
The game has also been out for a month now and I'm trying to get through a bunch of games before I have to start teaching again in September.
