Ben's Week In Review: October 30

Happy Halloween Eve, everyone. :)

Uh-oh...I just thought of something...

I was all ready to talk about BioWare's comments concerning the apparent maxing out of current consoles. But then I remembered the studio's encouraging statements concerning the optional multiplayer mode. Obviously, they fully understand that when it comes to Mass Effect, it's about the epic, story-driven, cinematic adventure first, and the multiplayer second. They get their fans (despite the depth hiccup with Dragon Age II). But you know how Square Enix always seems out of touch and yet, at the same time, they're desperately trying to find ways to cater to Western gamers...?

Dear God, what happens when the light bulb goes on, they look at the industry and current trends, and they say- "Hey, that's how we make our loyal Final Fantasy fans happy in the West! We give 'em multiplayer!" Great. Another reason to turn the franchise away from its roots. By that time, it'll be a flat-out action game like Devil May Cry or something. 'sigh' I apologize for my bitterness.

So yeah, I'm excited for GTAV

It made my day to see the official announcement, especially when I saw that Rockstar would release a trailer on November 2. And I wanted to see what you guys thought about the current direction of the franchise; it began with the more realistic GTAIV and likely, the devs will take the next step with GTAV. So does the series work better when it doesn't take itself seriously? Like Saints Row, for instance? I mean, everything you see about Volition's series is so over-the-top or blatantly tongue-in-cheek. And overall, my favorite GTA is Vice City, anyway.

Well, I'm probably gonna love GTAV, regardless. To me, it works great either way, and that's because Rockstar knows what they're doing. Oh, and people have asked me if I'm going to interview Sasha Grey or Nikki Benz for Saints Row: The Third, just because we've interviewed a pornstar before. The answer to that is no. Sorry. :)

Personal gaming update

So while Arnold got to play Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, I have to wait to get my copy like everyone else. But I do plan to provide a review of my own at some point, as I've said. People seem to want a couple viewpoints on this massive game, so I'll do it (just not sure when). I did, however, get Battlefield 3 early and that's done. I'd play more online because it's great, but of course, I have no time. Besides, there's a game sitting here I'm going to play in a few minutes...

It's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. But listen, just so everyone knows- they sent me the Xbox 360 version for some reason. I'd like to think it's basically the same as the PS3 version, so I'll do the review based on what they sent me. I'll make a note of it at the top of the review, too. And of course, I expect to see Modern Warfare 3 soon as well, and November doesn't get any easier. It's just completely nuts.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Need for Speed: The Run, Saints Row: The Third, and that GoldenEye 007 remake have to get done somehow.

I heard that skyrim is only 3.8 gb on the 360 when you install it onto the harddrive.

Ben. I'm jealous. I really want to play Skyrim right now....

But wouldn't the graphics and the controllability on the 360 be different than on the PS3? I've never personally played much on a 360, so I don't know how much the controls would be different.

Either way, I'm really looking forward to 11/11/11 :)

PGU: I've been continuing to play the beast Batman Arkham City, and I've started a new game in Uncharted 1 just for the heck of it before the new one comes out, and dang it's epic...

Don't be so negative. Multiplayer could work in a turn-based RPG. It would just very likely take a HUGE amount of time to play.

I'll almost definitely finish Paradise this week. All I can say is that I have to go back and read the entire Commedia at a later date when I can actually fully understand and enjoy them for what they are, rather than reading it piecemeal as I did this time around. When I'm done with it, I'm going to give myself a bit of a break from the intelligence intensive novels and read... probably The Bourne Identity.
Really getting excited for Uncharted 3. Can't bloody wait, and I'm almost through UC2. I'm wondering whether I should go back to something like Fallout 3 to give myself a break, as I know I'll finish it before Friday. We'll see.
And Skyrim; I've decided it's going to be a birthday present to myself. Bugger waiting for the complete edition.

You should probably choose something smaller than Fallout 3, if you're looking for a palate cleanser...unless you're getting U3 for Xmas.

I know what you mean there, but I've already logged about 40 hours in Fallout 3, and I've been meaning to get back to it at some point. I think I could break away after only two or three days. I'd go for something else, but the only thing I'd be able to play for such a frame of time would be pieces from the Sega Master System Collection.

Completionist mentality <-- right here.

Can't wait for the GTAV trailer. I'll be happy however they decide to tackle it. Whether it's real or cartoony i'm sure it will be quality work.

PGU: Playing UC2 on crushing to get my plat and freshen up on the finer details preparing for the 3rd. For some reason it's way easier on crushing than it was on hard. It's more demanding at times, but there seem to be less random instant deaths from snipers and people off screen. Could just be because i know the game better though. Wish i could get battlefield! damn the choices in the next month!

yeah, i saw that too with uncharted 1 and 2. probably because you picked up on how to properly play the game on hard mode and the techniques and habits stuck. lets face it, when you play on easy you(not you but generally) basically run and gun. as difficulty increases, you change your play style because you wont survive, like hiding behind cover more and slowing down. i found playing uncharted on crushing a cakewalk. The only time i had a problem with the hardest mode was my first time playing killzone 2 on elite. after that killzone 2 and 3 on elite are cakewalk.

i wish you had the ps3 version of skyrim becuase we all know the problems the ps3 version of fallout 3 had. i love that game but i swear there were times when i thought my ps3 was going explode while stumbling along 5 fps during intense action...there are sections that are damn near unplayable at times becuase of frame rate and freezing issues. good ol bethesda. the masters of in depth open rpgs and the masters of buggy/glitchy games. why in the world would they send out the 360 version to a ps site?

speaking of fallout 3 and skyrim. i was encouraged to hear that skyrim will be more like fallout 3 than oblivion. i found oblivion to be kind of boring while i would rate fallout 3 as one the best videogames of all time. i am a big jrpg fan and i used to kind of ignore wrpgs like fallout 3. on an impulse i decided to give fallout 3 goty edition a go and i was blown away by the game. there is just so much rich content jammed into that game. i've put 100 hrs into that game easily. fallout 3 is a game that shows graphics are not all that matters. they remain very important but every once in awhile a game can overcome weak production values and still manage to grab you. i'm glad i got over my wrpg hang up, and also that i was able to overcome the weak graphics of fallout 3. fantastic game.

mass effect 2 is my second favorite game of this gen. it's not exactly the most in depth rpg, but it has some the best story telling and writing i have seen this gen. that's another game i almost did not get becuase i heard a lot of the rpg elements were removed. my only regret is i did not play the first me game. the interactive comic that was supposed to get ps3 owners up to speed was kind of lame.

as for the mp in me3...i'm not so sure that me3 needs mp. it does not strike me as a game that does. i know many bioware fans are annoyed by bioware's attempts to bring mp to the me series. they were annoyed with the direction da2 went as well. oh well, i'm pretty confident bioware can pull this off. i think there will be online co-op in me3. that's always fun. as long as it's optional and it does not hurt the sp campign i'm okay with it i guess.

finally, thank god the mgs hd collection was not delayed here in na. there was an article on here that said it was and i freaked out. the article was fixed to state it was only delayed for europe. i am very much looking forward to playing peacewalker for the first time. i hear it's a great game. it's even referred to as mgs5 in some circles. i can't wait.

When it comes to Squeenix, you sound like me Ben. lol God I hate them now. Square is like a girlfriend who cheated on you but you consider staying with her because shes the best you ever had...& no that never happened to me.

Anyway, GTA I'm kinda over it for some reason. I think its because GTAIV just felt so been there done that for me, that I honestly wont play another until they drastically change everything again.

I meant to post earlier on the Nintendo article so I'll go now instead. I know they've been around for a long time and all but I kinda feel like they deserve some of the hard times they're dealing with at the moment. Let's be honest, they bamboozled A LOT of people with the Wii. Ask any average Wii owner and they'll tell you they barely use the damn thing. This is the gaming business, so stop with the magic tricks already and make some games. And jeez can they seriously come up with some new exclusives/mascots already, its getting tiresome.

I honestly believe Sony's gonna rip Nintendo and Microsoft a new one next Gen. with their warhorse of numerous gaming studios. So it doesnt matter if either of them continue to make hardware.

PGU: I haven't been gaming much lately as I've been busier with work and I'm trying to keep it that way. A friend of mine already has a copy of Uncharted 3 and he cant stop talking about it. He's getting his mind blown from the usage of 3d. Lucky bastard

Let me also add on Nintendo, I dont want them to go away. We need competition in order for games to be made at their highest level. Microsoft on the other hand, get out of the hardware business pleasee because your a f*cking cancer

@Super Mario, I'm just wondering, do you have a life? Because the last time I checked video gaming wasn't about who was the best or how many sites you could troll on about how "awesome" your favorite genre of game is or favorite console is.

Video games are meant to be full of choices, there's a genre for everyone, and there's always gonna be a game that at least someone would enjoy. What's the point in putting down someone because they play a certain game? When you do that, it only shows you obviously have no maturity, and you seriously need to get a life.

Have fun being a troll dude....it ain't a good life...

i really dont mind multiplayer on my rpgs as long as they make sure single player is unaffected. white knight chronicles turned out great, if i didnt have more games to play i'd be on it all the time. by the way, i think people who buy battlefield 3 get early access to the mass effect 3 multiplayer beta, just saw it when i flipped through the papers in the case.

I hope GTA V returns to the arcadey roots of the series, but i doubt that it will.

There are certain aspects of GTA IV that i liked (i'm actually working on completing it to 100% right now), but the overall experience for me just wasn't as good as the PS2 games.

PGU
Besides trying to beat GTA IV to 100%, i'm also working on getting to A spec level 40 in GT5, if anybody has any helpful advice on how to do this quickly i would sure appreciate it.

Ahhh, it's that day of the week again eh?
Week in review.........
I'd like to share my week if you guys don't mind.

3 days ago I took a driving license test, and I failed.
Not because of the questions about law, but I failed the Ishihara Color Test.

Yesterday, went to see an eye specialist doctor, after taking some examination, the doctor concludes that I'm suffering from a form of color-blindness called Dichromacy and it can affect my life on a daily basis. First thing I thought was that will this affect my gaming life? I don't know.

Last week has to be the worst week I ever had.

Well first off, i need to see what mass effect is all about. Don't care about GTA. In fact out of all Rockstars games that franchise is my least favorite. I can't really explain why because i like over the top action and open world games and GTA still doesn't do it for me. If i go and buy uncharted 3 i probably will fail my classes at this rate.

PGU: All battlefield all weekend. I freaking love the online. Ive figured out how to pilot the jet. Im beast with the m416 but i really want the AN-94. I would get a good 20k per game with that gun in bfbc2. So the fact that it made a return in bf3 has me all the More excited.

I DO HAVE A QUESTION THOUGH: Ive become accustomed to the ACOG sight but it feels like I'm more accurate with a red dot. I used the ACOG on all guns in bc2 and was extremely effective with it, but I'm struggling to justify using it in bf3. Does anyone prefer one over the other? If so why? Id greatly appreciate the input.

i also feel like the acog isnt the most accurate to use, its really only good imo for 3 shot bursts, or sometimes one shot bursts. try lowering the burst on ur gun to help out with the recoil.
