Ben's Week In Review: November 6
So who's ready for Modern Warfare 3? Everyone here is getting it this week, right? ;)
GTAV is a "radical reinvention," huh?
I'm as excited as anyone about Grand Theft Auto V, but I find it interesting when Rockstar decides to use the descriptive phrase- "another radical reinvention." Many believe that based on the debut video, Rockstar has heard the fan outcry and returned the franchise to its cartoon-y roots. In other words, GTAV won't take itself quite so seriously, and we've already heard about being able to pilot planes into buildings and stuff like that.
But that wouldn't be a "radical reinvention;" that would be like...reverting. They've already done it before, after all. GTAIV was definitely a radical reinvention but how does GTAV qualify...? Well, there are a ton of rumors floating around and so far, I haven't seen one I didn't like. I have a feeling that GTAV could be one of the best games we've ever seen...
"The truth" about Metal Gear Solid: Rising...?
It's interesting the way Keighley worded it. Maybe he didn't mean to imply anything and he's just hyping a Rising-related announcement, but it has definitely resulted in plenty of gamer discussion. Kojima wouldn't stand up at the VGAs and say the title has been canceled, would he? Are there false rumors about the game that he wants to clarify? If such rumors exist, I don't think I've seen them. Maybe "the truth" simply refers to a finalized release date, which we've been waiting on for a long time.
Personally, I keep thinking that Kojima has been forced to step in and take more control of the project. He first said he'd only be overseeing the game's progress but maybe it wasn't going forward fast enough. Either that, or the team was going to release something Kojima wasn't impressed with...that guy is a perfectionist, remember. Well, guess we'll learn "the truth" on December 10, the night of the VGAs.
Personal gaming update
I have Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception but I haven't played it yet, for two reasons: 1. I really want to savor this masterpiece, and I don't want to have to rush, and 2. I'm still swamped with reviews. This doesn't mean I'm not having fun, though; I very much enjoyed GoldenEye 007: Reloaded, and I keep pushing through The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. You play that game for three hours, it feels like fifteen minutes... I also have Saints Row: The Third sitting here, which means that has to get looked at soon. Oh, and Modern Warfare 3, of course. It just never ends.
I just refuse to play Uncharted 3 until I'm a little less frazzled. By the way, I'm doing a video commentary for Skyrim to go along with the review; I would've done one for Uncharted 3 but as you know, Arnold got that one instead. Oh, and don't forget to grab your Home t-shirts! Next show coming soon... We also might actually get up some real t-shirts, if there's enough of a demand. :)

The news about Rising really has me interested, but I wish I had never heard it, because now it will be nagging me for a month. That phrasing has me kind of worried. Hopefully I'll be too busy with school to really worry about it too much.
And sadly I won't be playing Uncharted 3 for a while either. I don't have enough money for it right now, and even if I did, my free time is extremely limited. On my worst days, I have barely 30 minutes for lunch, and 30 for dinner once my day has started. But once I'm on Thanksgiving break, I might rent it and play through it. I'll be buying it someday for sure, but it honestly just doesn't top food, rent, and car repair in terms of priority.
Oh, and I'd love a real PSXE shirt!

My hope for GTA is that it can look as real as it wants just let me do crazy shit like the rumors we've been hearing.
I hope the truth about Rising is that it's not cancelled. I know it's not a real MGS but I still believe it will be good.
Yes I will be getting MW3 Tuesday. My kid loves the series. I'm sure I will enjoy somewhat to. You never know, with three studios working on it it could turn out refreshing.
PGU: Got UC3 at midnight played the next day because it was special enough to warrant a day off of work. It is by far the most accomplished in the series. I think anyone who says that the gun mechanics are bad are just looking for something to nitpick about. I also bought Fear 2 and have started that. It's flawed but pretty fun. Then tonight I picked up Arkham Asylum and the PS3 headphones which are awesome by the way.

Uncharted 3 is amazing. Arkham City was it's own fun. I even had fun with Infamous Blood festival, which reminded me how much I love the franchise. Now onto Ratchet & Clank and Dark Souls.
I opted for an open box laptop this weekend instead of Sony's 3D monitor. So, I'll be playing battlefield 3 at some point. I'm looking forward to Ben's Skyrim review, as I never got into Elder Scrolls, so I'm curious, as I know he never did, either.

I actually got it used for $78 a week after it came out, from a guy on ebay.
I love my new headset, I can be playing some"Depeche Mode" or "Jan Michele Jarre" on my PS3, & then go all the way down the hall & clean up my bedroom while listening to them, with no cut-out or distortion what so ever
It's no big thing, but I want my final "fit & finish" to wind up perfect, so my one &only small complaint is that I can't snack while it's on, because my head movement (or jaw???) causes one of the plastic parts to rub a bit, causing a slight squeaking noise & I haven't been able to isolate exactly which part or where on the headset so I can modify it.

I've played a little bit of Uncharted 3. I'm trying not to beat the game too quickly. I started the game on hard difficulty, which I never usually do, hoping that it will slow me down somewhat.
I'd order a couple of shirts if y'all decide to make some available.

PGU: Working toward finishing Dead Island, I failed big time in Atelier Totori and had to start over, and I don't have much gaming time. Boo. WKC2 is just sitting there with only a few hours in it and I feel bad about that.

Which reminds me of something. On the official japanese MGS HD collection site a reveal is being teased for the 7th of this month (tomorrow), there is a song in the background called "spring has come". I'm thinking it could be the reveal for the MGS1 remake, seeing as how MGS1 isn't included in the collection.
kojima said that he has something special planed for the 25th anniversary of MGS next year. My fingers are crossed.

Anyway, I remain very interested in Rising, and I can't wait to find out what "the truth" is. It obviously won't be cancelled. That'd be an epic ballbreaker, but I'd expect to see that Kojima has taken over production, or that the game has been renamed Metal Gear Rising to form the potential of a spin-off prequel series, or hell, just a confirmed release date. Maybe we'll find out that there'll be more gunplay elements than we've been led to believe, or that it'll be more of an adventure game than pure action. I can't help but wonder.
PU:
Finished Paradise at long last and am now reading The Bourne Identity. It's different, and better than I was expecting. Also playing Uncharted 3. I can definitely see why reviewers have been marking it lower and I feel that for some reason it isn't quite as good as UC2, but certainly not deserving of anything less than a nine, IMO.
Having trouble getting through Lunar Subterrane of FFIV. Seriously, why are there no save points in that joint? It makes the game damn near impossible. That's around about it.
Peace.
P.S. Good to see that Skyrim is as engrossing as I was hoping that it would be, and can't wait to read the MW3 review... for various reasons ;).
P.P.S. Finally picked up the ICO/SotC collection too. Can't wait to get stuck into that.

there is a big difference between beta and online pass though. you had to download the game using the unique code given to you. online pass sticks to you psn account i think. either way, hes only going to use it as a test whether he likes the online part of the game or not since he either borrowed it or bought it used. this could be a trial whether he can justify buying his own online pass.

"the truth" of rising.... i dont know. i get the feeling that kojima is just going to share some information on the plot and setting of the game. like raiden fighting all these enemies to find the truth to something. either way, i'm not interested in rising at all.
PGU: i just finished uncharted 3 on hard, got all but the online trophies and crushing mode. i'm doing that next. also got resistance 3 so once uncharted is done, i can work on that since i'm already level 35 in uncharted multiplayer from the subway promotion. i still dont like how they geared multiplayer to be more run and gun now. its not a game breaker but just annoyed by the people just running around with their micro using the steel fist technique. combine that with the changes they made with the guns and aiming down the sights is pretty much useless in the game now.
also been playing some battlefield 3, beaten that on hard mode the first time and it wasnt really hard at all, there was just this one cheap spot where i died over and over near the end of the game, it was just luck that i got past it a few times but the checkpoints in the game were put in the wrong places. i mean, i died a bunch of times in hard mode. that meant i had to redo the unskipable dialogs every damn time.
i'm also playing battlefield multiplayer and i kept freezing everytime i played on the tehran highway map. luckily they did an update and that problem is solved now. only now i start freezing on grand bazaar now. its not my hard drive either, i plugged in the original drive from my refurb system and still got the same problem. batman arkham city doesnt freeze anymore on story mode but it does freeze in challenge mode now. as long as all my other games are playing great, i got no problem for now.
also found force unleashed 2 on clearance on targer for about $10. i guess i'm still a star wars fan because i still bought it even though i still have a bunch of new games to play.

On Rising I really don't know what to expect. I'm afraid (yes afraid related to fear) that M$ does it again and ruin another excellent franchise.
Off topic: Maybe next week I finally get another PS3 (because mine broke and I have to fix it to make a backup), I'll take the Uncharted 3 bundle or if a great sale comes up I'll take it. Right now the best option that I have is that Best Buy is offering the bundle with a free copy of U1 and U2, although I already have them, it's good to have an extra copy to lend them to a friend or something, or sell them. Anyone knows of a good deal out there?

coupons do stack when i use them. just gotta make sure that the total price of your purchase BEFORE TAX is above the gaming coupon value. you cant use 60 dollars worth of gaming coupons on a game that is 59.99. they dont tell you that the 1 cent is needed to use that full 60 coupon at one time. i only had a problem when i did that. recently i used the $20 gaming coupon from uncharted 3 to buy a $20 psn card. like normal people, i thought the coupon works using the final total after taxes.
@godsdream
i go to cheapassgamer . com. click on the deals tab and the forum will show you all deals available this week and possibly the following week. when you buy an item that will give you a gaming coupon, it will print out at the register at the time of transaction but you wont be able to use it until the following week. so if you buy the uncharted bundle this week, you can start using your gaming coupon next week. gaming coupon lasts about 1 to 2 months typically.

yeah, most kmart associates were just a pain. luckily for me the people on the videogames section were nice and helpful. there was a time where i called in to ask if they had a game in stock. heres her reply word for word, "how should i know that? im not in charge of that so i wouldnt know whats in stock." really, you'd answer a customer like that?
@clamedeus
yeah, once i bought my first game from kmart, the sales just kept coming. because of all the gaming coupons i had i got modnation for free day 1, mass effect 2 for 20, crysis 2 for 20, got yakuza 3 free with yakuza 4, resonance of fate free with la noire, and a bunch more plus a few more gaming coupon. i basically pay about $40 dollars day 1 on new releases and still get another $20 coupon with that purchase. The thing i like about kmart too is that their return policy is 2 months. so if you find the game cheaper within 2 months you can buy the copy from a different store then return it at kmart for a full refund.

I don't comment on here very often (mostly because I tend to have an extremely similar opinion to most of the usual's on here anyway!) but I've been a member here for quite a few years now and I just wanted to say well done on truly building this website up to what I consider one of the greatest, if not the greatest source of PlayStation news on the web. As soon as I get home for the summer I'll be sure to see the show on Home!
As for gaming, I haven't had much time although of course Skyrim/Uncharted will be priority, and I still need to complete Mass Effect, the only reason I tend to have a 360 lying around these days :D

GTA V has me really interested. I think there are some things we haven't seen that will qualify as a reinvention. I really didn't like GTA IV and thought it was extremely repetitive and dull. Messing around in it was fun, but I couldn't get into the characters or the story and being nagged by that damn cell phone. However, Red Dead was a damn classic which I wasn't too sure about when I got it because I didn't want it to be another GTA IV. However, Red Dead was a masterpiece.
I am almost done with Uncharted 3 and am disappointed. It's a great game, but it's not as well paced or as well structured as Uncharted 2. It's fantastic overall, but it just doesn't have the same command, intrigued or power that U2 had. That being said, there are plenty of great moments and overall it is a great game, it's just not to the same level, IMO. Hope you get some time to play it, Ben.
The new melee is awesome though, and Drake interacting with the environment during melee is perfection.
Also, plane sequence, while it could have been longer, is the stuff of legends.
I've been squeezing in a couple of hours a day and am happy to report it'll take the average human at least 10 hours to finish.
The multiplayer is excellent though and is surprisingly the highlight of the game for me.

what if we want the good old GTA we know and love?
and i dont mean that crap they called GTA IV!
i wish developers would get it out of their mindset that we want our favourite well known series to be "reinvented".
its driving me F*CKING INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if i wanted a different game, then why the f*ck would i buy this?
seriously!
enough with this "reinvented" BS, and more of the old classics we know and love!
why the &^%$ do you think HD collections are all the rage these days!?
im really looking forward to rising, the slicing tech is really cool!
why risk your own life fighting enemies when you can slice through a structures support beams thus causing it to fall and kill your enemies?
i loved that watermelon demo!
i just finished uncharted 3 last night, oh boy what a surprise but disappointment that was!
i was expecting it to be exactly like uncharted 2, boring repetetive gameplay, typical hollywood uninspired story, big set pieces.
but it wasent, it had much improved gameplay, a much improved story, but the set pieces were fewer and not as impressive which really spoilled the game for me.
as i said before when doing a sequel your suppose to bring over everything people liked, remove what people hated, and improve what you can improve.
uncharted 3 dident though, it removed most of what fans loved, kept everything fans hated, and slightly improved but no where near enough what needed to be improved.
and why the &^%$ does everything look like its made out of plastic!?
the 3D effects were pretty crap too!
the WHOLE point of 3D is to add a sense of depth and have things popping out of the screen.
but uncharted 3 had the least of these in any game ive ever played!
so what was the point of adding 3D support?
just to have another tick on the box?
yea thats certainly how it feels, $ony just went to ND and said yous need to have 3D support with this so ND tacked it on without looking how to utilize it and take advantage of it.
KZ3 is FAR better in 3D, and thats not exactly the avatar of 3D games.......
oh well on to sonic generations now.

The wait is over! The dreadful period since SR2 is now behind us, a period filled with self-concious, face-folded dramatic and pompous movie-wannabe games that each try to beat each other to death with their serious-sticks.
But now, in from the side-line dances Volition and their bitch-slapping party called Saints Row The Third, the game that brings the FUN back to gaming!
Get the party starteeeeed!!!!

Singularity: A shock. I am shocked. BioShocked. How could they possibly get away with such blatant plagiarism? It's like a "re-skinned bioShock".
As a Bioshock fan I refuse to play any more of it!
Battlefield 3: I have just had time for a tiny little taste of it yet. Started the campaign and tried the first coop mission, so far left unimpressed. I am afraid I was more tired of traditional war-themed FPS than I thought I would be. Either that, or this game is yet another game where the hype-machine has spoiled an otherwise good gaming experience for me. But I have yet to dive into the MP part of it. The best part, I know.

Funnily enough I bought a third copy of WKC2 this weekend, for my son. He was plying through WKC (the first one) as a kind of test to see whether he'd stick to it, he completed and started on a newgame +, so I splurged on WKC2 for him. That means the whole family is playing WKC2 right now. Yes, me, my wife and my son. My wife's comment on the game is that it's the best JRPG she's played since Xenosaga, and the only game she's played since Xenosaga that gave her the same feeling she get's from playing Xenosaga. Considering Xenosaga is one of her favorite games of all time, that's high praise.
