Ben's Week In Review: November 20
'whew' The move is done and the review blitz is finally wearing down. :)
The next PlayStation generation...what might we see?
It has become quite a hot topic over the past couple of months. This past week, we have the report that the new Xbox is set to launch in about a year's time, and internal Sony studios are already working on PS4 titles. Furthermore, if one of those teams is Guerrilla, Killzone 4 could very well be a PS4 launch title. Wouldn't that be insane? Hey, toss in Gran Turismo 6 for good measure; it seems impossible that GT6 could arrive for this generation, right? Come on, you can't help but be a little excited. It's only natural, my fellow gamers.
As happy as I am with the current generation of consoles, I suppose progress is both inevitable and positive. By the way, anybody remember that fake PS4 commercial? Looks like a simple 3D ad these days, huh? But I remember getting goosebumps watching it; that's what an impending generation of new, unexplored technology does to people. I'm more about the software, though.
MGS5 might be the final amazing PS3 exclusive
Hideo Kojima isn't a big fan of Microsoft or the Xbox. He has made that clear in the past. He's also about to reveal more information concerning Metal Gear Solid 5, which may end up being one of the last PS3 masterpieces. If it does arrive for this generation and it's as memorable as we all expect, we won't have any choice but to put MGS4/MGS5 just slightly ahead of Uncharted 2/Uncharted 3 on that best PS3 exclusive list. Then again, what if Quantic Dream delivers their next project before the PS4 gets here? They should... It won't be Heavy Rain 2 but c'mon...it's Quantic Dream.
I think it's a little funny that once MGS5 is announced, the hardcore franchise fans will just forget about Metal Gear Solid: Rising. ;)
Personal gaming update
I've finally managed to start Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, which is amazing as expected. I just wanted to get the big reviews out of the way - including Assassin's Creed: Revelations, which I will certainly go back to - and I also wanted to get the move out of the way. For the record, I'm out of an apartment complex and into a house I'm renting from my father. It passed into the family earlier this year and while small, it's on a ridiculous piece of property in the country where peace and quiet reign supreme. A few apple trees, a stream, a garage, and an office with an enviable view. ;) Oh shut up, I've worked hard. And I have other goals and ambitions, too.
Anyway, we'll be shooting the next PSXE Show soon (had to take a break with the reviews and the process of moving), and remember to grab your PSXE t-shirt for your Home avatar! Also, let me know if you really wouldn't mind paying for a real t-shirt...I was surprised to see quite a few saying they would, and maybe we could do that for our fans if enough people were interested.

And 3DsMax is pretty complicated. I'd imagine the program would be hard to learn without a solid teacher showing us how to work it. Our teacher has 15 years experience and has actually done work in the movie industry etc. I'm pretty fortunate.

if going to school for animation was a mistake then i dont know what to call going to school for mechanical engineering. i took the major because i wanted to build something but never got to do anything until the final 2 semesters. the professor was so retarded that i lost all interest in the class. he kept pushing us to do all the paperwork stuff instead of actually building it. made us calculate every damn aspect of it from pressure, customer surveys, to number of actual tests we need to perform instead of actually testing it. i got so pissed that i just gathered all the equipment, went to the machine shop, and built the thing. we made a CO2 powered branch pruner by the way, not our idea at all. that thing cut through a 1 inch diameter dowel rods and about 2 1/2 inch actual branches. when we demoed that in the competition, everyone looks each time we pressed the button to cut.

Mechanical Engineering is rough. From what I understand there's a lot more math for that field n I'm not good at it. I'm going to school to be a Civil Engineer. I'll just be designing stuff for contractors to build. Along with doing surveys, cross sections for roads, etc... I like the design aspect, and really enjoy using the Auto Desk/AutoCAD software Civil 3D.
At one point I was enrolled to go to school to be a video game designer but that didn't work out.

i probably could do that but the problem is, in todays economy, all jobs in my field require at least 4 years experience and that is something i dont have. so i'm inexperienced for a mechanical engineering job and overqualified for other jobs. why cant they just hire someone without experience? that way they could train the guy so that he would know nothing but the job at hand. basically a specialist.

I hope MGS5 turns out to be a sequel to PW. There is a gap between PW and the original Metal Gear that a sequel could fill.
Actually it would be even better if MGS5 is a remake of the original 8 bit Metal Gear from the MSX & NES, that game needs to be remade more than MGS1 from the PS1.

Ben,
As far as your move to a quiet country place with fruit trees & a stream, I'm frigging glowing "Nuclear green" with envy.
Since I've been out of work, I've been wishing for a winning lottery ticket just so I can get out of my own apartment too, & then buy a whole damned countryside...or an nice big always-warm deserted Island, with a few automated machine gun turrets for any nosy trespassers....or salespersons.
My PGU...Since I'm broke again, I don't have to keep on top of my gaming hunts, so I've been trying to whittle down my huge backlog instead.
So, in the last week I finished Crysis 1 & 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
Plus I'm almost at the very end of Hunted: The Demon's Forge too, but I've been stuck fighting the last big boss battle for a couple of weeks now, so I've started on Deus Ex:HR(Augmented Edition) which I'm really liking.
Last night I went all through the bonus disc first, which had a 44 minute "making of", the soundtrack, animated storyboard, and the Motion Graphic Novel, all good stuff.
I'm especially digging the fantastic soundtrack on my Sony headset.

World,
At my best so far, I've only been able to knock 3 out of the 4 pillars while he's recharging his strength before I'm killed, and usually I'm only knocking down 2 pillars before most of my deaths.
I've even knocked my gameplay mode from normal to easy mode just for that fight, but alas I'm still being served up as grade-A demon food.
Hell, the way I keep dying, I think I might've accidentally slathered myself in a gallon of A-1 sauce.
BTW, I DID partake in Slegging 5 times, 3 times as Caddoc & 2 times as E'lara.
So I guess I'm going to be in for a world of Sleg-hurt once I finally get past this last boss, Huh?

I kind of forgot how to beat those pillars down, but I do remember that you should go ahead and step back from them and fight back the waves of skeletons and stuff when they are going to kill you because they will keep dropping health and magic potions so you don't have to worry about running out, eventually you'll get bigger windows of time to knock those pillars down together.

OK, I think you might have nailed it for me.
***SPOILER ALERT***
What I had been doing was killing some of the skeletons & then trying to take down a pillar while he was recharging. So now I'll just try killing all the skeletons & hope that they'll finally stop regenerating all of their swarms at some point.
But man oh man, between the skel's & then all the lightening bolts, bombs, & flaming skulls that the big boss has been throwing at me, it's been pure Hades.
As far as my Sleg guzzling, I guess I'm going to have to see what repurcussions comes out of of it, & then decide whether or not to re-play the game to get a alternative result

Started my new job on Monday, its sweet. First job I've ever had that I enjoy. Only down side is it pays weekly. Now I know that doesn't sound like a bummer, but it just makes me fee like ill spend money faster. I know I won't, it'll be the same amount of spendage, but on a more frequent basis if that makes sense.
And I think ill be getting skyrim on black Friday...

I must say as much as a stream of hot games is exciting it's nice to see it calm down so I have a chance to actually play them all.
It will be very interesting to see what games land on PS3 and what ones land on PS4. I don't feel ready for a new generation at all, but like you say that's the way the cookie crumbles.

PGU: Battlefield 3 and MGS4. :) All this news of a possible MGS5 has got me in the mood. That game really is a masterpiece. I can't find a single thing wrong with it. Great music, fantastic gameplay, even better controls, great graphics, tons of weapons and upgrades, and lots of options in how to approach each battle or setpiece. Just competed the Middle East section. I took my time and tries to sneak past everyone.
World advised me to start Festivel of Blood and I was going to but I think ima wait until January. It will give me something to play while I'm in California. Should be only a few more days until Skyward Sword arrives. Can't freaking wait! Played the demo today at Target. It made me regret not paying for overnight shipping.

PGU:
Having delved about a good 50 hours into Skyrim and a good 5 or 6 playthroughs of UC3, I decided to take a break from these amazing titles and try out Revelations. As much as the new story is welcomed, and the advancement to finding out just why Ubisoft has been throwing the plot to and fro in the past iterations is hinging upon completion of this one, I can't help but feel a bit run down. It was a wise decision not to make AC something to happen exactly every year, as I'm already beginning to get rundown with this series.
I adore the series, - been with it since the beginning - but it's starting to lose its shock value. Although, I must say that the hook blade has become one of my favorites... Anyway, I'll most likely be spending the next day or so chugging away at its storyline, most likely to beat within a day or two's time.
Good to hear you're settled in, Ben. That moving business is pretty tiring.

PGU: Exactly what was said above but I can't help but elaborate. I've only had two dragon fights and they've been awesome. To have them ambush you is crazy. I need to be watching more often. I also got extremely excited that they actually went all the way with the werewolves. Elder Scroll game worlds just keep getting better. Currently in Windhelm investigating a murder.

As many of you know, I live in Singapore. While it is a fantastic city, it is a city nonetheless and I am tiring of it. I do hope to do similar Ben. I am targeting the next 3 to 5 years to move to another country and into the country, away from the big cities.
Was going to suggest that when you video the next edition you give us a little tour of the new office, and a glimpse of the apple tress and the river running through the property, that would be awesome...
PGU: Still trying to complete Uncharted 3. Will do this upon my return from Vietnam, at the end of next week...

konami is like every other publisher, there not going to turn down millions of sales for the sake of it.
i just hope its exactly the same as MGS4, was such a jump forward in just about everything.
one of the VERY few games this gen i really really enjoyed, and could dream of saying best in the series.
unlike so many other franchises........
just finished ACR last night, oh my f*cking god that was a awesome ending!
a good game, not great because they removed so much from the series what made it great, and as allot of people are complaining the characters are kinda hollow.
i seriously doubt will ever get a game better then AC2, i mean that was about as perfect as you can get!
made me that much more excited for AC3 though, just to see desmonds final quest and all his training come to use.
i really enjoyed the desmond puzzle levels too, yea there really weird and, well, so different from the game but they were allot of fun!
im really disappointed we did not get to know much more about subject 16 though.
when the developers said he would play a big role in the game i thought we would finally find out what happened to him, what all those crazy symbols he wrote meant and things like that.
but you dont, he really does not play much of a role at all!
thats one thing i hate about the series, ubisoft are such a tease!
they love to leave so many things open, yea there probably leaving it for the final game, AC3, but still.
opening up a question in AC2 then not answering it for 3 years is just cruel!

as for metal gear solid 5, all i can say is i'll be on that midnight launch with the most expensive edition of the game. i'm hoping its exclusive and a little jab against xbox like in mgs4 disc swapping.
PGU: i just platinumed uncharted 3, what a game. kinda sucks that they took out the weapon select cheat. i've been playing alot of battlefield 3 lately, i think i gave up on platinum on this game for now. if i get it i get it but i dont feel like going out of my way to get it. I've been getting used to sniping in the game again like i did with bad company 2. i got myself about a 374m headshot earlier against a running enemy who ran behind the leaves of a tree. i also still got resistance 3 on my shelf still wrapped. having too much fun in bf3 to start it. i'm thinking of going out black friday to get assassins creed revelations, i think its 30-35 bucks, but its not really a must have for me. i just want to see the final chapter of the story.

To improve your soldiers you need to send that out on missions in the Outer Ops section of the game. If they survive, it should improve their stats.
Best thing to do is capture as many soldiers as possible on the battlefield. Eventually you will get some good ones. Then just discard the weak ones.

SKYRIM: This is not a game, it's an experience. GOTY 2011, nuff said.
RAGE: *Jaw drop*. You think kz3 looked good? Take a look at *this*. A hundred times larger maps, twice the quality on graphics (*especially* characters - twenty times better), ten times better animations... I mean... How *did* they do it?!?! Just... How? Why? What is going on here!?
SAINTS ROW THE THIRD: So, they just went on and made the perfect sequel.
Absolutely every single component of the game is enhanced since SR2. Everything! From missions to cutscenes to acting to animations, coop gameplay, customization options, the entire package. Every nook and cranny is bigger, stronger, better, more. And you feel the love from the devs ALL over this production.
This is just as obvious "coop game of the year" as Skyrim is the GOTY.
Any of these three would by themselves have made a crazy good week. To have these three at the same time is like a serious overdose of JOY!

I'll be sure to watch MGS5 but I still have to play 4 which is sitting on my shelf.
PGU: I decided I was to overwhelmed with all the games I had and traded in 72 of them. Most of them were crap games and I just don't have time to play them all. I kept all the great titles I have which left me with 34 still. Gamestop gave me $500 in store credit so I picked up MW3, Skyrim, and AC: Revelations. I also picked up the MGS collection at K-Mart since I had a $20 gaming coupon which was about to expire. I was also thinking about picking up Saint's Row 3 and White Knight Chronicles II but not sure yet. May just wait till I complete some stuff I have.

But maybe he just announced it in that interview since, the Metal Gear Solid franchise is a 'PlayStation' franchise.
I was a bit surprised when the MGS HD Collection went over to the Xbox 360 and how they have special offers as well such as getting a customizable avatar and stuff. It seems that Kojima made Solid Snake's story exclusive to the PlayStation franchise.
So I only know as much as any other gamer here. I have no idea what's going on with Rising, but I guess it's simply because Kojima isn't satisfied yet with handing down his franchise to anyone. Of course there was that one card game AC!D which he seemed to approve.
And one more thing...I really wanted the series to end at Peace Walker...I honestly don't know why there has to be more added to the story...it's good enough as it is. If we get MGS 5 to be the very beginning of the whole story (Boss' mission) ...then I guess that'll be interesting. But I truly wonder what's in Kojima's head right now. I'm not really complaining that there is going to be an MGS5, but I honestly think the franchise is good enough and that he should work on a new IP or something.
Anyway, we'll see.

So even though he doesn't want MGS on the 360, as VP, he may have no choice but to make that decision in order to make Konami the most money he can.
As far as Cage goes, I will always want anything he makes, but I hope that this time he sticks to his word & makes any DLC that he promised us(those 3 missing HR DLC's).
Yeah, I'm still a little bitter of not getting the opportunity to savor even more Heavy Rain after I'm all done with the main disc itself.

And it hurts my eyes pretty bad. There's like a universe of diference between the graphics of the PS3 and the Wii... I think we're being massively spoiled by Sony with the PS3.
I mean, I was playing Donkey Kong Returns and Donkey Kong looked like a piece of crumpled brown paper rolling around on the screen. But that didn't hinder the fun I had with it.
I got my hands on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and hearing the awesome soundtrack that came with it. I read way too much about this game to pass it...
Hope it's as good as the very few games I have for the Wii which is like 3. lol
