The Best Desert Island Game Ever Is...
Oh come on, you've played this before: you're on a desert island and you can only have... Remember?
Okay, so let's make two assumptions. First, let's just assume we've never done an article like this before; I'm sure we have, but I'm tired and I think we should have a little relaxing fun after Black Friday. Second, let's assume the desert island has one magical socket plugged into a tree somewhere that grants you everlasting electricity. Oh, and some nice elf gives you an HDTV that will never die.
So you can bring one game. This negates the idea of bringing a backwards compatible console, 'cuz you only get one game to play until you die. What's it gonna be and why? For a long time, I thought I'd go with Super Mario All-Stars, even if that sounds a little like cheating (all the 2D Marios on one cartridge, so it's like four games in one). I just figured I could get the most amount of long-term fun because those games never stop being fun.
But the problem is that as great as those classics are, they just don't have the substance I'll need for the rest of my life. And that being the case, I just need my favorite game of all time, Final Fantasy Tactics. For whatever reason, I can play it forever and it'll never get old or boring. Besides, although I've long since mastered and learned everything, there's just endless experimenting to be done with all those Job classes. There's the longevity; you could spend eons doing that!
So what game is it for you? Remember, only one. ;)

I think I'd have to either with Heavy rain just because replay value of playing for 22 different endings.
Or
GTA4 complete, seeing as I've already put 130+ hours into the regular game & I'm still not done the full story & side quests.
Add the fact that "GTA4 Complete Edition also comes with the Gay Tony & The Lost & the Damned versions included too, so I could foresee playing it for a long, long, time.

Honestly, it's difficult to pick between a working Skyrim and WKCII. Probably the latter though. It has a ton of content, and both of the WKC games, and online capabilities. Perhaps a game that teaches one how to make a good sea-worthy vessel would be a better choice though. ;)

If I had to choose I would have to flip a coin between MGS4 and Zelda Sklyward Sword. But I might find myself cheating in order to pick Skyward Sword. It's such an awesome game. My personal game of the year, possibly this generation.
Why? MGS4 is one of the only games I have played over and over and never got bored. Skyward Sword I suspect will be the same way from what I can tell do far.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't choose my personal favorite game Uncharted Drakes Fortune, but if there was Internet I'd pick Uncharted 3 simply for the SP and MP.
So yea I guess for me a lot of it is quantity. But I believe the games I listed are of high quality too.

I had multiple playthroughs (3) with different characters in Oblivion, all 3 each having over 100 hours, one of which - my Redguard warrior character - which I had only finished about half the side quests with, had over 250 hours, not including the shivering isles expansion. If I add just the shivering isles expansion it would be close to 300 hours with that character. My PS3 died so to finish up the remiaining side quests, and do all the "bad character" or quests that would result in negative appeal, I created new characters. Only other games that give me that would be a MP game and by the looks of it Skyrim.
Fallout 3 and the expansions might be another choice. I easily had over 100 hours in Fallout 3. I didn't finish everything or explore everything either. Adding the expansions would surely up the amount of gametime as well.

After giving the question some thought I would probably bring Uncharted 2 because it has a great single player campaign complete with action, suspense, romance, and comical moments. Plus it also has an online mode so I could talk to other people.

This is a tough choice but I'd definitely pick one of these 5 games.
Oblivion
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (If there's Internet it would be, Uncharted 3)
Skyrim
Fallout 3
Red Dead Redemption

A desert island would be the only place that I could invest enough time into it to be any good!
There was an old strategy game that I used to play on the Spectrum 48K called Laser Squad. That would be the grand daddy of a desert island game! I must have sank hundreds of hours into that as a teenager. I even played two player by myself making a story up as I went...
Reminds me of that old Twilight Zone episode when all this guy wanted to do was read, then he went into the bank vault, came out later and everything had been destroyed by a nuclear bomb. He then realised that he could read forever and just as he started he broke his glasses!!!
That would be me. All the time in the world to master Dark Souls and there would be a power cut!

If you were sent away for life for a crime you didn't commit and you couldn't be bothered digging to freedom, what game would you play on your video game console in your cell to pass the time before lights out and big bubba needed his cuddle?
I'm sure there are a few lifers within the ranks of the PSX community. A big hello to you all...

It was the title that immediately popped up in my head. Surprising, because I much prefer futuristic settings to fantasy but there's just no denying the qualities and scale of Skyrim. It's got quantity AND quality, both being important when stuck on a desert island for an unknown period of time.
If there was online connection there's no question though: I'd go for one of the mmorpgs but that's almost cheating I guess, since many already has proven one can live a life through an mmorpg. :)

if said island has a nuclear power station so i could run my PC, then it would have to be the witcher 2.
massive game takes forever to finish, and the combat is so satisfying!
if you could only use a less powered console, then it would have to be ratchet and clank 3 up your arsenal.
has everything!
by far the best story in the series, has heaps of exploration ( was so much fun finding all the sewer crystals), had by far the best weapons the RYNO in that is the best ever created!
i would say skyrim because its such a massive game, will litterally take the rest of time to finish!
but its FAR too buggy, last thing you need on a deserted island is a game that freezes on you every 5 minutes!
and if your save gets over 4MB which it will quickly you cant play it.
oh, and theres no internet on a desert island so theres no downloading patches.

I'm sorry, but you can easily finish and get tired of that game after a year. I want a game that doesn't have an end, a game that lets me explore multiple genres even!! If you can only have 1 game, choose something that offers something new that lasts forever, and only one game I know can do that!!
Littlebig Planet 2
A person can easily spend an eternity creating their own games and levels with LBP2!! And with so much spare time on your desert island, you'd have enough time to create the perfect game/level!! Use LBP 2 to create the greatest RPG you can imagine!! If people can recreate Zelda and COD in LBP2, why just choose Zelda or CoD as your desert island game when LBP2 has the tools for you to create it yourself?
Right now, Skyrim is one of my favourite games, and I could easily play it for a year, but I'm sure I'd eventually find everything and want to play something different, like a racing game, or a platformer, or a puzzle game, or a party game.
I put in LBP2 and I can play any type of genre or create my own genre, and that is why, to me, it is the greatest and only choice for a desert video game. The only game which lives up to the hype of being possibly endless and have no boundaries but your imagination.
Littlebig planet 2 isn't in my top 5 fave games list, but if I was stuck with only 1 game on an island, I'd be thanking every deity for eternity for giving me LBP2 to mess around with. It is endless!!

Final Fantasy VII
GTA San Andreas
Metal Gear Solid 4
Elder Scrolls V Skyrim
Mass Effect 2
I have to also give special mentions to Okami, shadow of the colossus, saints row the third, portal 2, Batman Arkham city, Gran Turismo 5, Demons Souls, Bioshock, Half Life 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2, gears of War 3 and Red Dead Redemption. Any one of these games could easily make any persons top 5 list, and I could easily group any of these into the top 5.
Littlebig Planet 2 wasn't there, because it just didn't have the same impact the games I listed above had, but if I could only play 1 game the rest of my life, Littlebig Planet 2 would top that list.

Infamous 2 does have a level editor, and while you can create thousands of different and fun levels or missions for Infamous 2, it still can't compare to the scope and imagination behind LBP2.
Infamous 2's mission editor is great!! LBP 2's level and game creation tools are insanely incredible and practically endless!!! That's why I'd choose LBP 2 over anything else should I be stuck with 1 game for eternity.

I second Ben's choice. FFT would provide many, many hours of non-repetitive play.
I'd also be tempted to agree with the majority and choose one of the Bethesda games, probably Skyrim since it would be 100% fresh because I haven't played any of it yet.
But, providing I had all the hardware and access to all 3000 songs, I'd have to choose Rock Band 3. Limitless pleasure.

That game has an editor to design your own parks, you can really never be "too good" in this game, it doesnt "end" in the traditional sense, there's *always* challenges and you can create your own action videos. The map is filled to the brim with excellent spots to do tricks on - you discover cool new things to do all the time. It's an amazing playground. Plus it's got a fun coop part (if I'm not alone on that island).
Of course! Skate 3 MUST be mentioned!

But if we'd go for console LBP2 would probably be my pick. Though Kingdom Hearts is a personal favorite, at least then I'll have the time to finish that game with every possible build :P
Minecraft is a great choice as well, that can be as endless as you want it to be.

Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite video game of all time, but I have already pumped about 1500 hours (not an exaggeration) into that game, so I don't know how much more I can do with it.
Also, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this before, but how about a sports title like NCAA Football, or Madden (not '12), or MLB The Show or anything with a good, extensive Franchise mode like that? Those have the potential to stay interesting for quite some time.

- fun campaign (but replay is low after 2nd time)
- free roam (single and multiplayer)
- MULTIPLE multiplayer games (deathmatch, poker ...)
There is SO much to do in this game.
If Skyrim would add free roam multiplayer, we would have a winner.
