Ben's Week In Review: November 27
Black Friday is over and I'm happy to say I didn't buy a damn thing. ;)
People will always complain about women in video games
Apparently, developers can't create a female character that avoids all negative scrutiny. Someone somewhere somehow will always find something potentially offensive. I couldn't believe that anyone would have a problem with Quantic Dream's depiction of Madison Paige in Heavy Rain. That could very well be one of the most authentic, realistic, sympathetic female characters in any video game ever. She was not over-sexualized. They didn't use her for the sake of sex appeal. That's crap.
She was a normally formed young woman who did what she had to do. She was an investigative journalist with a brain and a heart, and yeah, she just might sleep in a t-shirt and panties. Honestly, if people are going to complain about that character, we should just stop trying. The PC police will never be satisfied.
Square Enix has been taken over by pod people
It's the only explanation I can reach. I've seen questionable business decisions and development ideas before; I've never seen such a consistently bizarre industry and company outlook. First they say they need faster development cycles (yep, quantity over quality) and now they say sequels "have a lot of merit" compared to doing an all-new adventure? No, the only "merit" is that it's faster. That's it. It's true that other franchises always thrive on recognizable environments and characters but we're talking about Final Fantasy. It's completely different.
The fans want one thing. You want to give them something else. Why? And why do you continually bring up Call of Duty and the western market? Have you ever once tried just doing what you used to be good at? I've never heard of a company ditching a winning formula without that formula first having floundered; the "if it ain't broke" philosophy works beautifully until it doesn't work anymore. But S-E didn't even-! I mean-!
'sigh' I can't talk about it.
Personal gaming update
I've been busy with other things so I've only played a little more of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. I think I'm on Chapter 14; I'm trying to savor it. I love the characters and the action, and I'm really not getting these complaints about pacing. No idea where that's even coming from; sounds just like another excuse to find fault but whatever. It's fantastic. I might also try to finally finish Catherine. I haven't forgotten that great story and I really want to see how it ends.
By the way, we haven't forgotten about our questions to Square Enix concerning FFXIII-2. I keep nagging the PR woman who has been good about trying, but no responses yet. Just be patient...I'll get 'em. They won't get rid of me. Also, as a surprising percentage of readers might pick up a PSXE t-shirt, we might have an announcement on that at some point. Lastly, we'll get going on the next PSXE Show and announce a new party in Home. The review blitz just sidetracked us.
Oh, and if I think it's something people want to read, I might talk to Jo Garcia (if she's willing). Regardless of what some people think, that article was never meant to be insulting, and she's been keeping up with us on Twitter. So anyway, that's the update. :)

I've given up on Square. They're not the same company and the people running it have obviously lost focus on what's important. It seems they are doing away with every great staple that made Final Fantasy such a unique and glorious franchise. It's dead now. Versus XIII, Kingdom Hearts 3DS and maybe Agito XIII will be the last games I buy from them. I certainly won't be buying anything that Katise (whatever his name is)is involved with.
PGU: Zelda, Zelda, Zelda, about 20mins of BF3 then more Zelda. I just finished the 3rd temple. All of them have been epic and have level of design that should be admired. Only 3 temples in and I have already put 27 hours into it. The new upgrade system gives it a nice RPGish feel. The stamina meter and chance of losing your shield if you're not careful while defending is also a welcome addition. Those two features along with smarter enemies forces you to be more strategic.
Ben, I guess I don't think the pacing of Uncharted 3 is necessarily a bad thing. I guess I would just liken it to a 2+ hour movie that was so good it felt like it was over in 15 minutes. It was just such a fantastic game, I was disappointed it ended so fast. :(

Er, uh, anyway. Square Enix is doomed I think. I don't think there's any difference between pod people and Japanese businessmen enamored with Western trends. Both have no souls.
Playing Skyrim, I'm thinking the huge save file issue shouldn't affect me since I'm 40 hours in and my save isn't even 1 megabyte yet. I know the patch aims to help, but it probably won't do much. I might be getting close to the end of Atelier Totori, and it is a neat game. Looking forward to Meruru. Also I'm reviewing Jurassic Park, it's uhhh, kinda an weirdo mashup of JP and Heavy Rain... but not in a good way.

My PGU, I got Crysis 2 for PC for $10, and Rage for PS3 also for 10 bucks. Crysis 2 at 60fps and high settings is a sight to behold. I'm still pushing through Fallout 3. So far, I'm very pleased with my purchase (of the ASUS g53sw-xn1 gaming laptop for $580). I'm digging up all those multiplatformers I've missed or have played, and playing them as they have meant to be played. Surprisingly, I more often then not using a gamepad, rather than mouse/kb, as it is just easier when lounging in front of the TV.
Not a lot is said about gaming laptops among most pc gamers. They mostly say you got weak non upgradeable performance coupled with exorbitant cost of entry. Thing is, gaming laptops have come along way the past few years, and if you're a sharpshooter, you can get a very good deal. Mine is a 1080p 15 inch (I prefer 17-18" desktop replacements), quadcore i7 with 6gig ram, and with a 192 bit gtx460m with 1.5gig DDR5, back lit keyboard, 500gig 7200 harddrive, all for 580 bucks. It's not exactly what I wanted, but it's 90% of the features I wanted for about 20% the price. The model I have is even upgradeable So I get the benefits of a desktop for about the same cost.
Anyways, after seeing some high caliber performance of games, I still see that the current gen of consoles isn't that bad. The likes of Uncharted are still stunning to me. And to be honest, if I didn't need a new computer anyway, I would've returned my laptop after sampling some pretty games. But it's nice thing to see.

Nice computer btw. I nearly went with that same series of laptop. Though, my laptop holds up nicely and offers a clear upgrade over the console norm for performance. And hot dang, the cheapo deals are sick. I've acquired so many games over the past few months for $5-$10, it's hard to believe. I did grab Bulletstorm today for $8 off of Amazon digital. I can't stand how vulgar it is but the game play is quite cool.

And Crysis 2, and Rage were actually 29.99 at Kmart, but I had 2 $20 coupons I had to use at some point.
I'm glad I got Crysis 2 on PC. It doesn't quite have the pacing and adrenaline of Killzone 3, or the production values, enemy design, and funky weapons of Resistance 3, but it overall, it's my favorite shooter of the year. Rage I got because I said I get to it when I could get it on the cheap.

Are you into mp gaming too? Then you just *have* to try mp in Crysis 2. Just give it some time for you to get into it, then I'd love to hear what you think. For me C2 is also the mp of the year. It's so well balanced gameplay, excellent map designs and so totally awesome to use that suit.

im just surprised its gotten as little as it has.
one thing i cant understand about $E is why there so split.
there doing proper traditional JRPGs on the DS, the amount of kingdom hearts games both that and the PSP have received is just ridiculous!
so why cant current gen systems get them too?
its almost like there convinced the PSP and ds only released in JP, so JRPGs will sell well on those, where the ps3 and 360 never released in JP so they would sell poorly there.
hell, look at neir, the only game they have made for next gen consoles that actually felt like it was from $E!
even though it wasent.......
but why?
why do the traditional $E games we know and love have to be restricted to portable gaming?
ive been really trying to get into skyward sword the last few days, but it just keeps showing how outdated the wii really is.
on one hand it shows what the wii can really do, made it a whole lot better.
but then its also shown how much further they could of taken the game if it was on a modern console.
i keep saying to myself how much better would this be with HD graphics.
with the wiiU tablet controller.
if link could actually talk, and you could have a conversation with NPCs.
if they actually had a proper animation system, instead of peoples faces just being a blank piece of canvas.
if anything made me appreciate the advancements weve become accustomed to, its this.
i REALLY hope zelda will be a launch title for the wiiU, because, really, NO ONE does adventure games like the zelda team.
a amazing game, held back by aging hardware which is a real shame.

Not gonna happen. They have already said its gonna take them at least 3 years to complete an all new Zelda for the Wii U. If the Wii U launches next year, that's not enough time for a new Zelda. There will be a new Zelda for the 3DS before we see one for the Wii U.
I don't think Skyward Sword looks that bad. Would be nice if it was in HD but other than that it looks fine to me. The art style distracts me from the lack of HD.

though they should open up the voice acting, it just allows so much more depth in the characters.
playing skyrim before this was a massive mistake, i keep looking back saying i wish i could do this, i wish i could do that.
if not voice acting, then actually at least give some dialogue to link.
all he ever does is stand there!
just feels so artificial.

Lol, pod people. Good one. I don't know and I'm not sure that I want to with S-E. I was going to ask about the questions you fired off to S-E, so I'm glad you posted an update on that. Can't wait to read their responses... provided you've asked the hard questions. :)

Reading Dickens' A Tale Of Two Cities. Finding it utterly engrossing thus far.
Playing Skyrim. Is bloody good, but after fifteen hours, things are starting to break down.

PGU: Just got my plat on Uncharted 3, moving to Arkham City and Dark Souls next. Between writing for my gaming blog, work, and significant other time, I'm also trying to keep up with my other hobbies. I wish there were an extra 6 hours to each day! Then again, I guess they would make us work longer then huh?

To be honest I haven't noticed much complains about the babe in Heavy Rain. I have a hard time believeing this can be a big issue. The "Hot Coffee" case in GTA:SA on the other hand, now *that* was a big issue.
PGU: Oh man, what a sucky week. Three awesome games and I'm stuck in two of them!
Skyrim: So I've been stumbling around minding my own business trying to figure out stuff, when all of a sudden I get a group of mercs after me. And they slay me every time. Can't get rid of them, can't kill them. Oh man.
RAGE: So I was asked if I wanted to join a TV show. "Sure", I thought to myself, "that could be fun". Little did I know that the show was all about pouring an ocean of mutants over my sorry ass. And they slay me every time. Can't get rid of them, can't kill them. Oh man.
Saints Row The Third: The main game for me this week, for the above mentioned reasons. A coop buddy and me has gotten about half way through the main storyline (according to the stats) and we are starting to worry about the length. It feels like we're hardly past the tutorial stage. I guess that's only a sure sign of it being an entertaining game, but man time flies *too* fast when you're having fun.
So yeah, the only conclution from being stuck this early in both of the first titles can be: I suck in gaming. I've lost my touch. I'm getting old and stuff.
Not cool.

It's just, the storyline missions are like the cream of the crop. That's where the biggest events are found. And when the main story is over it feels a bit empty. We experienced this in SR2. As long as there was big stuff ahead we could fully enjoy silly minigames. But it wasn't the same once the main story was over.
It's nice to be "in the middle of something" storywise, also in regards to the minigames or - our favorite activity - shop around or just go bonkers in the city. But every now and then we want some big stuff to happen. So we tear off one more main story mission.
This game is just *perfect* to release plenty of story DLCs for. They got the framework set, just pump in more content. I'd gladly pay for injections with new content in Saints Row 3 for the rest of the PS3's life. No doubt!

@Jawknee: ... And that's exactly it, Jawk. I was not fully aware of what I entered and I happened to have only two bandages on me and on top of that I'm even short on ammo! I have to strangle as many as I can with my bare hands without spilling a drop of my own blood.
It really is a hopeless situation - and I can't exit back out where I entered.
I'll see if there is an option in a menu somewhere to abort that mission and return to the city for a proper restock.

I use the Sanguine Rose, the dog, and Lydia when traveling. It helps a great deal and the only thing I worry about is hitting an ally when I join in. I leave the Rose out of it, if I feel like their hogging all the fights.

I tried to use an exploit from Fallout in that if I entered a new zone (like some houses, stores) they would not follow in but wait outside (thus I could rest and restock) but not so in Skyrim: They follow and continue the fight inside.

Which do you consider the better franchise and why: Gears or Uncharted?
They would be ripped to shreds by their vey consumers on the web. Cause I don't believe we want to be sold a fantasy, we want to be shown the real deal.

But the Gamer/Geek crowd is a different story. When these women do live events, they are going to be expected to interact with fans. If those fans spot a phony, that person is done for.
It's no surprise that the ones that make it into the spot light are attractive. But their attractiveness is no reason to doubt their legitimacy. Especially considering the crowd they are catering to.
In all honesty if those "Geek Godesses" serve any purpose, it's to show the girls out there that "Hey this doesn't just have to be for the boys, we can have fun too"

As far as Madison goes, you just got to know that women are like her in real life, that will do what they feel needs to be done, so what's the big deal that some are having with her???
And don't women also lounge around at home in underwear & skimpy clothing in R/L too?
Geez, those few truly pathetic whiners must really be worried about their own manhood around a woman.
About SE & the direction they seem to be taking RPG's, I'm not a big fan of RPG's so I can't really say too much, but as a gamer, I DO feel for the longtime FF fanbase whom SE seems to completely eff'in over these this gen.
As for my own PGU,
I've been playing Deus Ex:HR & loving it, but now I've stuck trying to take down Barret, seems I don't have enough explosives, or maybe the right augs too, so I stepped away for a breather while I decide how to take him on once again. I might just restart that whole section from the beginning just to try beefing up my augs & and to pick up a lot more explosives.
In the meantime, I decided to whittle down some of my older titles, so I'm also doing Rainbox 6 Vegas, but Dammmmmn I shouldn't have waited so long to play it cause now it's looking quite outdated.
Oh well, I'm still having fun with it though, so that's all that really matters.

The one & only time I did a BF was when the Furby's were the rage & I wanted the much rarer solid black one & a solid white one.
I stood 3 hours in line for Walmart to open & once the doors were thrown open everyone just bum-rushed the entrance, what a frigging madhouse it was.(BTW, I did get both furby's).
If you want to see just how bad humanity can suck, just stand in line on a BF waiting for super-popular item before the store opens.
But I swore that after that nightmare, I'd never do another BF at a brick & mortar store.
And I haven't.
