Ben's Week In Review: August 5
Finally got a new game to play...not that I was getting tired of Rainbow Moon or anything. ;)
Assassin's Creed III is lookin' good
There has yet to be a time when I see footage or information pertaining to ACIII and I end up disappointed. In fact, every time I see or hear about this game, I just get more and more encouraged. The latest, a video displaying the prowess of Ubisoft's proprietary AnvilNext engine, is quite impressive. This franchise has always been known for its unparalleled environments and atmospheres, and I've personally noticed and appreciated the unbelievably fluid and authentic way the main character moves. And to think that all of that will be even better this time around...? WOW.
I love the combination of freedom and stunning ambiance, and this is part of the reason I say Dishonored will be another Game of the Year contender. These two titles are just so ambitious and so progressive; they attempt to give the gamer just about everything he could desire, while still maintaining a distinct structure that separates it from the purely freedom-oriented concepts, like MMOs. I can't wait for both these games.
I don't think I want a Twisted Metal without David Jaffe
So although Twisted Metal didn't exactly tank, it wasn't a runaway hit, either. Since its release David Jaffe has gone on to other things, and he recently posted a detailed update concerning the future of the esteemed series. In that update, he said he didn't know if Sony was currently working on another installment and if they were, he wasn't involved. He did say he wouldn't mind coming back to the franchise after his new studio had produced a few "successful new IPs," but I have to say...I don't want a TM without Jaffe. I mean, I think this is more his series than God of War ever was, and I believe he feels the same way.
I could be completely wrong, but everything about TM kinda reflects what we know about Jaffe. He loves that kind of game and he sees a lot of video game purity in it. So without him, I really think it would lose its edge. Oh, and I remember when Jaffe and Co. stopped after TM2 and 989 Studios took over for TM3 and TM4...the result was not favorable. For the record, 989 pulled the same crap with the Jet Motos after the original ruled.
Personal gaming update
So as you may know if you've been following along on Twitter, I have Darksiders II to play. I can't say anything about it just yet, as the embargo is the launch date (August 14), but maybe I'll risk a progress report Tweet later tonight... I should also have Sleeping Dogs this week as well, and I have high hopes for that one, despite a few lingering reservations. I'm not sure if DSII can keep me away from Rainbow Moon for very long, but we'll see. This sucker has tons of potential.
I've also decided that Square Enix can announce Final Fantasy XIII-3 if they want. I don't really care. I really had a lot of fun with FFXIII-2, but I still say they should change the damn title. It isn't Final Fantasy and they should know that. Call it anything else and I guarantee you'll have a lot more backers (and a lot fewer complainers from the die-hard FF fans).

Damn, shame you didn't link to the "Good deals for gamers" thread in the "gaming discussion" menu in the forum cause last week I had posted a quick sale on R3 for only $9.99 and with free shipping too.
BTW, on that "gaming discussion" menu, you can also get it to email you every time someone posts a good deal in there too.

^ what Frylock said above,
Even though you're registered here on the main site, you still have to do it again for the forum(you can use the same username & password).
BTW, your reply button is now missing, hence the reason for my misplaced reply down here, LOL

PGU:
Still having fun with ACII. A sequel that truly learned from it's predecessor in every way.
Been playing The Amazing Spider-Man with my son and I really like this game. The web rush really makes me feel like I am Spider-Man making those crazy high speed decisions in mid air. It truly never gets old bashing that Spider Slayer into the street and seeing the dust cloud, I love it! Collecting the comics is pure addiction! I really had a break through with the combat as well today. It's really free flowing for me now!
My son and I are close to getting Platinum on LEGO Indiana Jones 2! Great game, however I feel Indiana Jones 1 is a better game when it comes to the first 3 films. This versions first 3 films feels anemic. However the Crystal Skull is well done and fleshed out.

PGU: My progress through AC:B got derailed by various tasks that needed doing. Instead of continuing AC:B when I had the time, I started Batman: AA. I'm nearly done, but my play sessions are cut short each time I get to another tedious arena battle, which saps my enthusiasm to keep playing. I hope I can get through the last few hours before I just want to quit, because everything else about the game is excellent.
FFS, Rocksteady, let me play smart! I'm supposed to be the Batman, not the Hulk.

i really wish they would show off a few of the stealth missions to help settle fans worries of that.
and the cities, every trailer has been of conor leaping across trees.
i wish just for once we could have a franchise that sticks with what it is!
is that really so much to ask!?
id love to see a new TM with or without him.
sure it wont be the same, but if you still have the original team working on it than it should be fine.
just because david left does not mean eat sleep play has tumbled into a black hole or something!
the rest of the team is still in one piece, so if they choose too they could make a new one and, well, to put it simply id be pretty hard to be worse than the current TM!
so excited my new alienware laptop comes tomorrow!
cant wait to boot up metro 2033, ive been wanting to play that so badly but it never ran well on my desktop so i havent been able to enjoy much of it.
same for the witcher 2, one thing i hate about that game is that its got TOO much content!
its so annoying you go to finish some story missions than you get distracted with side quests, ive spent like 40 hours in the game and maybe 5 of those have been on story missions!
so annoying especially when you just want to enjoy the game, finish the story, understand whats happened, and move on!
you just cant!
i was at a friends house yesterday playing a little of resistance burning skies.
really makes me sad the franchise is now finished!
i mean yea $ony might continue it with another developer, but it wont be the same insomniac are such a unique quirky developer you will never fill their shoes!
its sad, its THE only shooter franchise released this gen that is actually unique and so different!
ive always loved the series its such a shame to see it end so quickly.
insomniac are such a brilliant development studio, it really pisses me off when all their game sell so poorly!
its just so unfair they do so much awesome work and they dont get squat for it!
so now they have gone to the devils work, facebook!
christ!
see what you guys made them do?
poor insomniac..........

Darkness 2:
Looked forward to this one since I enjoyed the first Darkness. But I gotta say: What's up with the ripping apart of the targets? "wish bone"... Is that stuff supposed to be funny? Or creepy? It's just childish and downright embarrassing!
When you hope noone enters the room while playing cause you feel dumb, you know something's wrong. This shit is just *stupid*.
Infamous 2:
This game is such a contrast to Darkness 2. I'd say this game is almost *too* "family friendly" and the humour in the game is pretty banal at times, especially the brother, but at least I'm smiling while playing.
It's a solid game to fool around in until Borderlands 2 arrive.

It looks more like a scream for attention than to actually add something of value to the story. Like the mandatory tit-flashes in low budget movies (not that I have anything against that, per say :D).
... Or maybe I've turned prude in my old days? Who knows... :)

Playstation All Stars Battle Royal Beta:
Its all I've been playing, Its just that much fun. My favorite is currently Sweet Tooth but the Beta only has the original 6 characters.
First off, the game feels nothing like Smash! People need to get that thought out of there head.
I think most people are put off by the supers only kill system. It works like a dream! Interrupting and dodging others supers quickly becomes valuable skill.
Another complaint is getting hit doesn't hurt you so why care? Oh how wrong you can be! Hitting others builds your AP, Throws, Items and stage hazards take away AP. AP is your lifeblood, actually your opponents AP is your lifeblood. The closer your enemy is to there super the closer you are to death. You need to keep your enemys from building AP as much as you need to build it yourself.

From my understanding FF13-2 sold less if this isn't the case than...I still think they both sold well because of the name more than anything. If it was called something like Tales of the Fal'cie or something I don't think people would have flocked but just my opinion.

FF13 were my first Final Fantasy - I had very few expectations other than that it supposedly were an RPG - and it's easily the worst 80+ game I've ever played.
My theory has always been that these games floats heavily on the franchise's former glory, both in regards to sales and metascore.

Yeah I was going to play it because all I heard was its linear but has a good story etc, so I was fortunate enough to just watch the cutscenes on youtube and I am so so soooo glad I did. Nothing about the story would have kept me playing, I only watched all the cutscenes because I was waiting for it to get better. Then the credits came and I was still waiting >.< Nah it actually got alright at the end but not really the Final Fantasy quality I was expecting. NEIRs story impressed me much more :P
Homura -
I personally hated 13 I do have friends who liked it though. Maybe playing it in japanese makes it way better because it had some of the most vomit inducing dialogue ever. Half of the things lightning said made me want to punch her through a whales stomach and into on coming highway traffic.
Maybe thats why you enjoyed it more homura, also I know people who do like that kind of mellow drama, however I just can't stomach it so I am aware its personal preference in that regard.

At first I thought it was some sort of parody that I didn't get since I was new to the series, but it just kept going and going so eventually I realized it were supposed to be taken seriously.
The graphics and artwork were pretty good in FF13. Great fantasy world. But that's the only good I have to say about it. And it's most definitely not enough to defend the 84% metascore it collected.
I mean, 84%?? Are you kidding me? That's the same score as games like Infamous 2, Battlefield 3, Resistance 3 and Crysis 2! Get out of here. :D

Even with the annualized cycle of AC, its even more impressive they are able to pump out a new character and new setting while the game looks fresh and looks like a brand new AC experience, I wonder if Ubisoft will release another installment in '13 or take a nice break from the series.

I'm kind of the opposite. While I agree the character moves well with the feeling of weight, I don't know if I'd call it fluid. My definition of fluid would be like effortlessly, and there's a lot that could be fixed in the way of accuracy. Because it's pretty accurate when taking your time, but when you're in a hurry it gets hectic at times. Realistic, yes! Fluid, i dont know if id call it that. I always thought climbing in the PoP games was better. But that's probably more than debatable as it's my preference.
I beat brotherhood last night, now I gotta purchase Revelations so I can get through it before AC3. What a weird and abrupt ending it had. I had some stuff I wanted to finish up before completing sequence 9 but at that point I didn't have a choice as the game pushes you through to the end. But that was a good game. I really liked it. But again the ending I felt should have been a more spread out and part of the game. I wouldn't have mind the game being a little longer to keep those last few moths intact.

I can't say I'll commit to buying it brand new before a price drop. I still have Revelations to play through before then.
Dishonored shows a lot of promise, hope it delivers.
PGU: More VF5: FS. I'm on the cusp of making Hunter rank, finally leaving the Dan's behind. Great matches. The game just keeps giving back for as much effort as I put in.
I saw Resistence 3 at Walmart for $15 this week. I nearly snagged it but my budget couldn't accomadate it without regretting it some 6 weeks from now. Great deal, bad timing. I want it in my PS3 collection in time.
Right now my most desired from here until the year's end is probably DOA5 and DSII. I'm thinking DSII will deliver and I hope it sells 4-5million+ across all platforms. I think their launch timing couldn't be better.
