Just Because I Play Games Doesn't Mean I...

Finish the sentence.

It's not so much about stereotypes, it's more about what we commonly associate with hobbies and likes and dislikes. For instance, if someone tells me they like going to gallery openings and museums, I might assume they enjoy reading as well.

Unfortunately, though, so many of the assumptions people make when they find out you play video games still hold negative connotations. For instance, for the longest time, those not "in-the-know" really believed that anybody who played video games also read comic books. The comic book thing was also tied in with "Star Wars" and Dungeons & Dragons, too; I guess indulging in any sort of otherworldly fictional fantasy means you're a geek and thus like anything related to fantasy or science fiction.

It also implies immaturity, obviously. But this assumption has never worked with me; I think I read a few Archie comic books at my grandparents' house when I was a kid, but that's it. Never understood the superhero thing, even when it got big in Hollywood. Another popular one involves technology and electronics in general; the belief being that if you play games (especially in this day and age), you're also a big tech or gadget freak. Well, I'm neither. I basically hate all that sh**, believe it or not.

So what are the common assumptions people make about you when they find out you play games? And how often are those assumptions accurate?

During the fallout surrounding GTAIII, I was working at EB and me and the rest of the staff purposely scared the crap out of this woman.

She came in, looking all scared, obviously thinking she might not get out alive or something, and asked if we actually sold that "horrible killing game" GTAIII to kids.

One of the guys said, "No, but we've all played it and now we rape and kill at least two women a day!"

...he got in trouble, obviously, but even he said it was SO worth the look on her face.

I remember when I was sharing a place with some friends. One of my room mates was watching me play a game. Crackdown maybe? I hadn't played one of them open city types in a while, not since Vice City before it. But I got in my police car and started driving down the sidewalk running over people while laughing maniacally. My buddy looked at me like, crap man, I think this game and your personality is dangerous. I'm like, "what?" That's like half the fun of this stuff. It's like the complete inverse of reality and what anyone would actually do so it's logically just humorous. It's like how jokes work, right? I can't say how many times I've laughed at myself while programming. I'll run into a runtime error and I go into debug or look at my code and find the logic error. And so many times its freaking hilarious because you see just why and how there was a problem and how silly it was to have coded it that way to begin with by accident.

Anyway, as for GTA, maybe it was Looney Tunes, with Taz and Bugs Bunny and folks all killing each other endlessly, I dunno. It's just funny =p

I will say, like when I read news stories, like the New York one today, it suddenly doesn't feel as funny because reality then comes just a little too close to home for a while.

lol, it can be fun to play with people who are at a loss for words when they find out you're one of "them".

I know what you mean Temjin, those real life tragedies bring you down to earth but then I just remember that in this very brief life you can't put a pricetag on enjoyment. Any of us could get dead any day but it isn't the games that make folks crazy, they were usually that way to begin with.

If I can enjoy myself and laugh maniacally while mowing down digital people in Saint's Row then to hell with people who think I'm nuts for doin it.

For me it mostly depends on the age I'm speaking to. If it's guys my age, buddies I grew up with or co-workers, we could talk games all day. But if the conversation involves an older person who didn't grow up with games, well, the conversation is something else, like sports, or movies, or some other hobby-like thing. I dunno, wood working (I actually worked at a wood working shop for a while). Anyhow, there's always a handful of snobs who hold up their nose to that stuff, but as far as I'm concerned, they're now more the wierdos.

Being that there is almost 7 billion people on the planet, and 30 to 80 million that play video games frequently I hate that stereotype. We actually live in one of, if not, the most peaceful era since society sprang up. I forget who actually wrote a book on it recently and laced it with pages of statistics showing how safe it is to live today.

I get the same thing from my parents world. I got it all through highschool. Although for a time I wanted to be a "video game designer" Which in my perfect world involved me just coming up with ideas for people to make while I just watched and learned nothing about programing lol.

Just because I play video games it doesn't mean I am anti-social, or someone with no friends. I do spend a lot of time gaming, but I also spend a lot of time reading and going out with friends. I'll never understand the weird taboo that ties video games to not having a life. If anything, it's boosted my imagination and kept me busy while others I know got into trouble and what not!

This really is a thing of the past from my point of view. Rarely does anyone I do or don't know, have anything to say about ke playing games. I used to defend myself, I used to get crap about it but it was easy to, get people to see it's not what they thought or how they associated it anymore. But back to present day, it seems everyone has a console, regardless if it's just for games or as a home entertainment system. Everyone can relate in some way.

I know more people that play or atleast have a game console than those who don't. So this just simply doesn't apply to me.

Anyone get that? I love me some videogame-age. This does NOT mean my conversations are to be centered around such things. In fact, I find talking about games only leads to anger. And anger to hate. And hate leads to the dark side. (Sorry, couldn't help it.) Seriously though, I can't seem to talk to someone about games without having CoD's praises sung, Sony's consoles bashed, or argued with that The Elder Scrolls are the greatest thing to happen to RPGs (yes, it has really happened). I'd sooner argue with a doofus blasting Disturbed that his favorite band is not metal than talk to some random person about games.

Yup that's what some of my family believes. Didn't you know video games destroy everyone who ever plays one. Video games are responsible for drinking, drugs, prostitution, quitting school, and pretty much every other thing people see as negative.

....am a deadbeat with no job, no social life, no girlfriend, bad eating habits, and get no exercise. Ok, so maybe the last one has a little truth to it, but I'll start pumping iron and putting on muscle mass when someone gives me a useful reason for it. I can understand cardio, but some of the 5ft wide shoulder beasts I see walking around, I just don't understand. Unless your job is that physically demanding or you just plan on lifting cars off of babies in the near future or something like that. I have a good job, have made new friends over the years, still have old friends from school, eat mostly healthy foods, and have a beautiful girl that adores me (been confused about that one for years now). By the way old people, not every game system is called a Nintendo! I still remember when my family would come by to see me and say "Still playin' that Nintendo boy?" Um, I'm 30, and this is a Play......say it with me.......Play....Sta.....tion......thu....reee. I dont ever remember seeing them pull up in their redneck trucks and being like "Still driving that Ford boy?" Ok, so they were Fords, but you get the idea dammit.

Basically, most people are surprised when I say I play videogames and even more surprised when they see the time I put into them. I train and teach martial arts, coach gymnastics, and am a personal fitness trainer, on top of that I am a "health" freak when it comes to eating according to my friends and clients. Not typically what people think when they find out I'm a game enthusiast lol.

On top of that I play just about every genre of games, I used to play games competitively although it was very brief and amongst my gamer friends I am "hardcore" in what games I like. Basically I like really hard games that push me to be a better gamer.

I guess people are just surprised. Because I look the complete opposite, but really my interest in martial arts and acrobatics started when I started watching ninja turtles and batman on TV and playing fighting games like mortal kombat and street fighter, so I guess its really all linked for me. I remember when I was 4 I asked my dad if he would take me somewhere to be a ninja turtle and the next week I was in a karate class and I haven't stopped for 21 years.

I dont know who I am more like. I am usually always cracking jokes in real life, but if I'm playing a sport or fighting its the complete opposite. Hard to say maybe a combination of all of them :D

Understood. I used to switch up who I pretended to be when I was little. I had a plastic TMNT weapons set and the swords were the first ones to snap in half due to repeated tree thrashings. The nunchucks and sais went next and all I was left with was the bo staff :(

Hahaha, yeah, my plastic swords broke really quick. Me and my friend had hard plastic swords and they broke the first day of us dueling. Then we got these other plastic ones which were softer but hollow? I don't know if you know what I'm talking about but they would becoming like a noodle after a couple of fights.

So we ending up just going to the forest near my house and finding the best sticks we could and would have sword fights with those. Surprisingly no one really got hurt other than the occasional bruise I think maybe one bloody nose but that was a super big accident.

Oh how fun childhood was, I feel bad when I look at the children at my block and none of them wrestle or have sticks or anything like that.

I also loved Leonardos sword, but when I was little I was scared he would cut someone so I sometimes closed my eyes when he fought anything not a robot. Probably had something to do with my fear of paper cuts and just cuts in general. I later learned how family friendly the series was lol and the fear left me.

I still haven't fully let go of what one woman wrote in a reference letter for me when I had applied for a job working with youth... She wrote a number of complementary things saying I have a foot in the youth world and one in the adult world, but among her list, which she felt was positive, was "... plays their video games"...

And I dunno... I appreciated what she was trying to do, but the idea that gaming was just me having "a foot in the youth world" as the antithesis to my other foot in the "adult world" kinda irked me. I didn't say anything though. I just decided to let her think I play video games because it's good for my career to stay connected or something....

Oh and I hate that I occasionally get asked by older in laws if I let video gaming get in the way of spending time with my son. It's based on nothing except the stigma attached to being a gamer. My son is only 9.5 months old now. He's obviously not able to game (beyond his fascination with my blue ps3 controller... which he loves to chew on) and I -never- play while he's awake, cause he's more fun than any video game I've played.

So yeah... comments based on nothing bother me too.

Well, since I'm a guy... But I always get curious when I meet a RL female gamer online.

Luckily I am a geek and proud of it. :)

...would rather have a videogame girl over you. Well, they aren't real obviously, so that's strike one. The jiggling I've seen them do cannot be achieved in real life no matter the amount of physics or gravity applied, so strike two. When I say my Skyrim chick is hot.....that doesn't mean I would rather be with a woman who looked like that. Why, you ask? Because there's a very good chance that with those looks comes a very self-centered individual.
