Ben's Week In Review: September 30

I can handle it so far but we haven't hit the gigantic games yet. And when I say "gigantic," I mean the ones that are really long, or have a ton of content...or both. I simultaneously adore and despise the fall. ;)

The PSN Day 1 Digital program might tell us a lot

I was actually surprised to get the press release outlining that new Day 1 Digital Program that puts just about every huge autumn release on the PlayStation Store the same day the physical copies hit store shelves. And it'll be interesting to see how many take advantage of this...are more people willing to download games like Dishonored and Assassin's Creed III than I think? Logically speaking, unless gamers have upgraded their hard drives, I don't see how anyone can download more than a few of these massive titles. Also, don't forget that many of us have had our systems for quite a few years, meaning there have to be a lot of very full hard drives out there.

On top of that, I'm wondering if a lot of consumers will actually opt for the digital version of a game. Yeah, it's out the same day, it costs the same amount, and you don't have to drive anywhere. Plus, you don't have to worry about a scratched disc or something like that (which hasn't happened to me once this generation, but whatever). But are people really going to go for the digital version when a physical copy is like ten minutes away? I'm really hoping that not many do...but I suppose it's just inevitable.

Joe Danger 2 is coming to the PSN...and I should apologize

It was announced this past week that Joe Danger 2: The Movie is headed to the PSN "soon." Not long before that, I posted the story about this highly anticipated sequel debuting on Xbox Live. What you don't know is that Hello Games boss Sean Murray contacted me, explaining that my theory of his team "jumping ship" and betraying PlayStation fans is largely incorrect. I mean, I think it's obvious that Microsoft did gain the timed exclusivity, which I suppose could annoy Sony followers, but it's not going to be a very long wait, right? He was also worried that I was really serious about maybe being hostile, and he even put in their press release that he said, "If I’ve learned one lesson, it’s don’t ever piss off PlayStation fans."

Long story short, I think we all overreacted a little. PlayStation fans are used to seeing Microsoft use their deep pockets to take things away, and are therefore quick to make possibly unfounded accusations. I have made it clear that I hold nothing against Hello Games and they've even offered to maybe do an interview in the near future. Just wanted to clear all that up. :)

Personal gaming update

As expected, I'm liking Dead or Alive 5 more than Tekken Tag Tournament 2. The latter scored a little higher but that's just because I believe it's a slightly better game, and I don't normally let personal opinion fully dictate a score. I think that's wrong in more ways than one. I also think it's hilarious that the fans made Tecmo reverse their smaller breasts idea. And I'm totally behind that, by the way. ;) I've tried to get into The Testament of Sherlock Holmes but it keeps making me feel stupid, and not because I can't do the puzzles, but because there's so little direction on how to tackle the puzzles.

Beyond that, I have difficulty getting away from Rock Band Blitz and Borderlands 2. I expect to see Resident Evil 6 very soon and Dishonored should be here this week as well. Yay!

Lastly, congrats to Snow Nynja (just known as Nynja here at PSXE) for winning the Facebook giveaway; he has selected Tales of Graces f and that will be on the way to him on Monday or Tuesday. More giveaways are coming, too...I'll have a lot of stuff to hand out! :)

I am for any improvement towards digital distribution. It's not how I would prefer to get my games but it is great for those who prefer to download their stuff. As long as the publishers do not completely abandon physical media, then I would not complain.

... but they will abandon it asap when digital distribution means higher profit margins, better price control, lesser piracy and no second hand market. And once those competing markets are gone - what do you think will happen to the prices?

That's why we must keep supporting physical media, that's why we all must realize that the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages of digital distribution.

I just don't like the idea of not being able to do what I want with my game that I bought. Whether it be trading it to a friend for another game, trading it at Gamestop to put towards buying the next game or just taking the game to a friends house to play.
I don't mind the smaller digital games but I really hope this Day 1 Digital doesn't catch on. I have plenty of space on my HD (over 400gb) but that is not the point.
The thought that spending 53.99(preorder) for a game and then once I play it, either letting it take up space on my HD or deleting it without getting anything back for it just irks me.

I agree Beamboom, and that's why I still prefer to buy my games from a store than downloading them online. I let my wallet do the talking, even it may just be a whimper. LOL

Now I got another reason why I would hate to continue downloading games. I downloaded the Starhawk single player game that was given for free to PS+ subscribers and I have been having issues installing on my PS3. Has anybody experienced getting the 80029564 Error? Because that's what I'm getting right now with Starhawk.

I downloaded the game from the PSN and it keeps encountering an error when it hits 14% of the installation. I'm now following a few workarounds suggested on the internet and I hope that one of them would at least work. But I'm now downloading the game for the third time and it's not something I'd want to keep doing. 9 GBs takes a long time to download for me. Going to the store to get a physical copy would only take me minutes.

Nynja you are going to love Tales of Grace F, despite the action battle system it is still strategic and an otherwise classically styled JRPG.

I think the digital route is going to cause lots of impulse buys because all you have to do is press a button. These games really aren't that huge, at 11-14 gigs per game you can still get like 40 games on a 500 gig hard drive so with people becoming less attached to hard copies I think it will take off.

"If I’ve learned one lesson, it’s don’t ever piss off PlayStation fans." Damn right! How the hell hasn't Square Enix learned this yet?

I'm savoring DOA5, just playing portions of the story mode here and there, and it is a ton of fun. Waiting on Dishonored in the mean time. Saw Nathan Fillion in a movie last night; I'm convinced he's the only actor who could play Drake. Also reading the latest Odd Thomas novel.

Just watching Fillion on Castle is enough to convince me of that, particularly on season 1 when he's younger and looked a bit leaner. But he sure get the humour down pat!

Fillions character in firefly could be compared to Drakes. And Fillion was both serious about what was important to him, but very light hearted. There's no one else that could do it. Except maybe Nolan North the voice actor, himself.

I say that because I've watched a lot of the behind the scenes and making of stuff for Uncharted and these actors (like North) for the Uncharted Games don't sit in a room and read script. They are running around, jumping, interacting with eachother and objects to really bring out the affects of the situation. They are doing what you would see in an action movie.

World,
How is the latest Odd book. I have been contemplating picking that one up but it has been getting mixed reviews. Not to mention, it has been quite awhile since I read the other Odd books (have read probably 100 books or more since the last Odd) I can't really remember what happened.

It's alright so far but I don't have high hopes for it. It's always a gamble with Dean Koontz ya know. Odd is still true to form but the other characters feel a bit cheaply done and some very strange supernatural things are happening where I sort of wish he would have just added to the old themes. Koontz does a great job with the new setting though, and it's hard to have a full opinion until I'm done.

Thanks World,
Let me know what you think when you get finished. Like I said before, the book is getting very mixed reviews. I have quite a backlog of books to read right now but I may pick it up at McKays if I find it cheap. I know they are older but I am reading The Dresden File novels right now. They have just been sitting on my shelf so I thought I would finally read them.

I believe that the PSN day 1 digital is an experiment. Sony will see the numbers of digital downloads over the years and then basically deside if we are ready for an all digital console.

Right now, with how limited HDD space is on stock PS3 models I want to be fairly selective on what games I store and don't store on my PS3. Pick up and play, arcade style games, are the best for me when it comes to on demand access. I like that. I like DOA5 like that, too. Huge RPG epics right now are fine being the game I can play then "shelve" once finished. Deep in the future when consoles assumabley(probably not a real word ;) have massive HDD's perhaps this notion will change.

Joe Danger is a cool game. I still turn it on now and again. I'm fine with whatever Hello Games does.

PGU:
I'm loving DOA5. It's been making a stronger impression the more time I spend with it. The Story mode was surprisingly A LOT more involved than past DOAs. This feels like a long time coming, too. I remember when DOA3 came out and while I loved it, I felt like the game didn't progress in the Story department as DOA2 would have you believe it would. I think both MK and DOA are on the right track with delivering stories that help draw personality and presence to the fighter you're playing as. No, the story isn't epic or deeply involving, but the effort to flesh out the personalities makes it feel better.

I haven't read a whole lot of reviews for DOA5, I read Ben's, but it's scoring generally how I expected it would. I hate seeing blurbs from sites like CVG that lists a CON as "lacking the complexity of SF." Is that guy crazy? Does he think Heihachi became MORE advanced going from around 100 moves down to 30, or so, all the while losing an axis? Does he think a 60fps clock, between the two games, somehow changes the multiplier on timing variables? As far as I'm concerned DOA brings A LOT to the table involving complexity. Environmental interaction alone, no it's not just for show, places this game in a league of it's own in some respects. But as for calling it LESS complex than SF is just a fanboy or highly misguided insult. I have nothing against 2D fighters. They're generally sharper and more precise in play than the 3D types but that absolutely does not mean more COMPLEXITY. I could list dozens of reasons why. Rant time over.

Anyway, DOA5 will be on my plate for a good long time.

mmmh presumably doesn't cause a squiggly red line below it like assumably does so I think you're right ;)

And while DOA has plenty of stupid humor the further the story progresses the more significant the plot points become. I was somewhat surprised by some of the events leading up to the end of that mode. Good for Team Ninja.

i have a 300 gb drive in my slim. i have almost every single game i own on blueray installed on it plus almost all of my digital games. i have had plus since it started and have almost every single game they have put out on the drive. i have a couple episodes of stuff i have yet to delete and still have to transfer my e3 videos which take up a good amount of space. (i keep all the e3s when they upload them but save on an external.) its getting full.

on my other ps3, my fatty 80 gb, it has the other games that i didnt put on the other drive. its only like 74 or something really and fills up fast.

i will still be getting assassins creed 3 on blue ray. i would still rather have the disc. i much prefer the blue rays to the digital. some of these games install 14 to almost 20 gb on your drive digitally.

even now more then ever since sony said they are shutting down the comic store. they did have the decency to email me, assuming because i bought comics. i will have to update my collection soon. i may even buy a couple that will finish a collection. i think i can read them on media go also.

i have been playing mass effect 3 with the ashes dlc. using the prothean on most missions just to see what he adds. got to say i really do like the game for the gameplay and the story. i have not finished it yet though and i will see how i feel then. i am almost there. im on earth talking to everyone.

Been playing nothing but Borderlands 2. Might have to put it down once I get RE6 though.

Randy Pitchford has been posting Shift Codes via twitter. I posted two sets of them in the forums. They're expired now though. One more set expected early Sunday morning, so check the forums if any of you are interested. They expire in a few hours after he tweets them.

I can see where the PSN Day 1 Digital program might be OK for some of our digital buyers(especially those with a super-fast download-speed internet provider.

But...even though I have a 1T PS3 & another 750GB PS3 for game storage, it's still not for me.
I want my games on BluRay discs(unless the game is a digital-only title.)

Hell, I just D/L'ed the free Starhawk's single player mode off the PSN, & with my "FAKE", but supposedly high-speed 7mbps DSL(I only get 1MB/second on it's best day), and with the Starhawk D/L being at around 9,500MB's, it took me 2 hours, 21 minutes, & 40 damned seconds to download it.

Nope, I don't see myself D/L'ing "Day 1" anything.

honestly the only way i want to get full games to download is on plus. when there is a physical copy there is not much chance of me buying the full digital game. some people dont think that way. now that they said they will shut the comic store down, i cant imagine if my full comic collection was in this jepordy. physical is so much better in terms of actually owning anything. much like i still prefer a cd. i can make my own mp3 or whatever format i need. i want the disc, not the promise to access it for as long as your desire.

I won't ever purchase a digital copy of a game. I contemplate it one time for ME2 and realized not only did it take up a lot of space, but it wasn't any cheaper, which it probably should be in all honesty.

This is exactly it, Big. One should think that digital distribution with no physical discs or cover or transport or storage or anything would lead to dramatically lower prices. But it will not!

We are much better off with the retailers competing for our money. Much, much better off.

Sawao-

That's all fine, whoever makes the decision on price. I'm just saying I won't ever buy digital because it should be cheaper than physical media. And because I have the choice I will always choose physical media, regardless the fact I prefer it anyways.

Beam-

Your post (reply) at the top is a clear example of why we should support physical media. I think the majority of gamers prefer physical copies anyways, but with as much push as there is for digital, the importance of physical media should still be known. There are many reasons as you pointed out (Internet speeds, Internet accessibility, hdd space, and price) that will effect many, many consumers negatively.

Day One Distribution. By all means, a fine idea. Those that will take advantage of it are free to, but I never will. It's as simple as that. I'm sick of arguing against it and trying to come up with ways to stem the inevitable tide of digital everything. Que sera sera.

I'll probably finish Paradise Lost this week and move on to Paradise Regained. It's a logical continuation. And I just finished The Testament of Sherlock Holmes. I agree with Ben. Made me feel like a right dolt. You do come to terms with the scarcity of hints towards the end of the game, but it still feels so damn esoteric. Good game though.

i would be all for digital if the savings were passed on to the customer, but there not!
im sorry but if im going to have to go through the expense of upgrading HDDs, upgrading my internet connection and waste half my monthly usage just for one frigging game you better make sure its worth the while!
but ATM its not, im sorry but i refuse to believe 20 dollars or so is all manufactures spend per disk.
were without a disk, were without a case, were without a manual, were without distribution costs so you would think that would equate to a hell of allot more than 20 dollars!
when downloads are half the price of retail then i will consider them, because then and only then will they be worth the extra added expense and hassle!

as for joe danger 2, that is one thing that REALLY pisses me off about playstation sheep.
if $ony gets a exclusive its because the company likes them, if M$ gets a exclusive its because of their endless wallet.
oh the hipocracy!
best way to describe them, spoilled brats!
they dont get what they want and they throw a tantrem that would make daddys little whore look like a frigging princess!
hello games are just starting in this industry they need all the financial help they can get, so of course when someones knocking on the door saying would you like some help of course there going to take it!
you shouldent be mad at them taking the offer, you should be mad that $ony did not offer them one in the first place!
sad truth in this industry is you really dont know how well your game is going to do, so you have to take every little oppertunity you get!
if that means upsetting some spoilled brats, then so be it!

finally got RE6 on friday and am about 3/4s of the way through now.
sadly its exactly what i was expecting.
what really pisses me off is the whole point of having the 3 campaigns was so we can have 3 very different distinct play styles!
but there not, every campaign is fast paced action with pleanty of explosions and epic set pieces!
its funny fans were complaining the mansion level from the demo was not suspensful and scary enough, but sadly so far its by far the most suspenceful and scariest level!
everything else is sit in this room and kill zombies till a door magically opens.
when your playing as leon and racing through the woods with a zombie on the roof of your car you know something has horribly gone wrong!
what is it with developers these days, and calling things different?
im sorry, there not!
everything has to be a mirror copy of everything, i mean if your going to create leons campaign a mindles clusterfuck of explosions and chases than whats the point of having his campaign?
why not mesh it into chris, or even the others?
whole point of leons campaign was so fans could have their beloved slow pased heavy puzzle based chest, draw, stair case scowering true survival horror game back!
sadly the one hit kill bosses from RE of late like the chainsaw dude and the executioner are nowhere to be found either.
:(
for once id like to be able to say i was wrong.
just once!

I am big fan of the digital movement. However, I don't want the physical option to go away. I really enjoy having an option. With that said I will be getting Dishonored digitally with the PS+ discount.

Joe Danger has a great reputation however I have not played Joe Danger yet. Here's hoping once we get close to Joe Danger 2 that they will release JD1 free for PS+.

PGU:
Completely enthralled with Borderlands 2. I was up until 4am playing with my step-son last night! We had the most fun yet! Can't wait to get back to it tonight.

My son and I have been having a lot of fun with all the DLC for Transformers Fall of Cybertron. He loves all the characters. I set him up with a MP game and it allows him to be the only one in the match. So he can be Grimlock for 20 minutes running around watching him transform over and over. We play on Bowels so he can jump to his death and switch to a different character.

LBP Vita is as amazing as everyone says. A true masterpiece on the Vita. Loving it when I am not able to play B2 or RE5.

Resident Evil 5 is great, I'm at the end of the Marshlands. I am not going to finish RE5 before Tuesday, oh well, B2 is seeing to that. Really looking forward to RE6 though.

Well the day 1 digital didn't really interest me at first until a few days ago... I just cancelled my resident evil 6 and need for speed most wanted preorders at gamestop because of it.

lets see in the playstation store I get RE6 for 60 bucks (no tax) where as gamestop would cost me 65. Then because Im a Plus member I get most wanted for 54 with no tax whereas gamestop would cost me 65... so right there I keep 16 bucks in my pocket... though that was only enough to pique my interest but not sway me entirely because I love game boxes and physical instruction manuals (dont really care about the disc).. then on friday we get a newsletter stating if you spend 100 bucks of more in the PS store in october (which both those games would put me over) you get 20 dollars added to your psn wallet.

So then THAT was the push I needed to sway me... 16 bucks left in my pocket PLUS a "free" 20 dollar psn card (basically) for buying both games? I was like screw discs this time. I got 290GB left on my 500gb hard drive Im sure theyll both fit just fine lol. SO oh well sucks for gamestop.. they wont be seieng me now until January (devil may cry).

I see a lot actually. They advertise a lot on sports networks and during games. I literally just seen Borderlands 2, and WoW: mists of pandoria or whatever in one commercial break during the Vikings-Lions game. Seen a lot of AC3 as well. This is smart because I would say on any given day, sports probably draw the biggest viewers, with all the dvr'ing going on. Sports are better viewed live, where as all the tv shows I watch are recorded and I fast forward through the commercials.

But you are right. The only time commercials seem to be aired is right before release and only for big games.
