Ben's Week In Review: January 13
A couple big January games are coming...are you psyched for DMC and Ni no Kuni?
I laughed out loud at Pitchford's CoD comment
I mean, it was just so funny. It was funny because it was absolutely perfect. It seems Borderlands developer Gearbox Software was given the opportunity to develop a Call of Duty installment for Activision. That would undoubtedly be a sound financial move. But Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford said his studio declined because such a project just wouldn't be much of a challenge. First off, he had the guts to say it. Secondly, he basically summed up in a few sentences what a great many have been feeling for the past three or four years. He said it just wouldn't move their studio forward in any significant way, and that's because you have to give the people what they want; i.e., more of the same. He's right about CoD's strength being its obvious reliability.
I suppose one could argue that Gearbox could've done something unique and special with CoD and seen that as a challenge, but come on. You don't really believe Activision would've gone for that, do you? The only way the publisher would even consider messing with the tried-and-true CoD formula is if they were talking about some sort of weird spin-off. And even then I doubt it. And you know, for the record, I'm willing to bet that quite a few teams would pass on a CoD offer...I'll wager every penny I own that David Cage and Quantic Dream would decline.
Yeah yeah, we'll get news on FFX HD...blah blah blah
It was my favorite part of TGS 2011: The announcement of Final Fantasy X HD for the PS3 and Vita. I loved FFX - as did a lot of people - and to see it get a high-gloss coat of sweet HD visuals would really make my year. Of course, which year is up for debate. We haven't heard much of anything about this project since the announcement and now that over 15 months have gone by, Square Enix says "the world will get answers soon." Yeah? Really? At about the same time as we get a release date for Final Fantasy Versus XIII, right? Has anyone noticed that they're having no trouble whatsoever releasing a new FFXIII installment every year? Why do I get the feeling that they wanted to jump aboard this "annualization" idea and keep pumping out more Lightning stories rather than focus on new projects?
Maybe it's just me. All I know is that with every passing day, I get more and more suspicious of FFX HD. I'm assuming - for now - that it will eventually show up. But I'm almost starting to wonder if Square Enix isn't second-guessing themselves. In other words, maybe they're thinking it just isn't worth it... They obviously don't believe fans are interested; if they did, we probably would've had other remakes by now.
Personal gaming update
I'm going to try DMC soon and then I'll have to deal with Ni no Kuni. In the meantime, I keep playing Assassin's Creed III and I still want to start Halo 4. I was really busy over the holidays so I'm behind, and February is looming very, very large... By the way, and I already mentioned this on Facebook, but I really didn't fall in love with that Ni no Kuni demo. I know everyone will hate me for that but trust me, I wanted to love it and it just didn't happen. I have my reasons, but they won't affect the review much at all. Subjectivity is a part of all reviews but I will recognize the game as being of a very high quality overall.
February is looking nuts, though. Has anyone noticed how many games are scheduled for next month?! Cripes.

DMC though, I'm sure will be less than $20 later in 2013.
oh, and good for Gearbox. It seems studios just get tired of doing the run of the mill stuff. Bungie bailed on Halo as well because they were pretty tired of doing the same thing.
PGU: I've been playing Batman Arkham City on and off over the last few weeks. I completed my second play through. This time on hard. The game really impresses me and I can't seem to get enough of it. I'm doing all of the side missions and stuff, and I find myself wanting more even after the credits roll. Few games compel me to keep playing more like that, especially when I have a stack of other great games waiting to be played. It's made my gaming hall of fame for sure, ranking up there on a top 10, probably top 5 list of mine. It's really a huge game. Few games define longevity or replay value like Arkham City does.
I also have been doing some DOA5 as well.

I see you on steam playing Arkham City a lot. What is funny is I haven't played it yet but I was addicted to Arkham Asylum. It's in my backlog, and I know I will love it. I wish you could lend me your steam games >.<

I know what you mean about the Pokemon vibe, and to be honest, that's one of the many reasons why the game appeals to me since I like Pokemon and have been playing since 1st generation. Hell, it might be the first reason why I would buy a 3DS since they announced Pokemon X and Y (yeah, they're now letters lol).
And don't tell me that the overworld wasn't THE most beautiful thing since FFIX? It even helped me imagine of Lighting running around on an overworld... :')

I was expecting my copy of DmC to be here this past Friday, but it never arrived, so I'm disappointed. Then again, I haven't really had the time or inclination to play games this weekend, so maybe it isn't such a bad thing. Here's hoping it arrives tomorrow though. In the meantime, I've been playing GT5 piecemeal. Not really getting into though. I guess I'm just feeling pretty apathetic all around. Not enjoying reading; not really able to write much. Bleh.
I've only got a week and a half left before I leave and I have to admit that I'm really apprehensive about the prospect. I suppose it's natural, but I can't help but wonder if I'm making the right choice, but this isn't really the right place for this kind of thing. I've spoken to a couple of people about it, but it hasn't helped :/
Anyways, peace.

I've been playing the MGS HD collection, which was also done by BluePoint games. I don't know how long it took them to make it, but it's just about as perfect a remake as you could hope for. Square Enix really oughta get them to do it; it seems to be their speciality.

Apparently I'm an underage user (by about what, 7 months? God I must be the worst criminal in the world lol), and Sony felt the need to suspend my account. I managed to get through to them after the third time of ringing, and they said it was possible to retrieve the account, by sending verification of identity. Okay, did that, and not even a reply in 40 days, including 2 further phonecalls and 3 emails.
It's a long story, but lets just say Sony can be really sh*tty when it comes to customer service.

Not moving, but going on a road trip holiday of indeterminate length.
Also, sorry to hear about Sony's customer service towards you. I've only had to deal with them once when my PS3 YLOD'd. They were alright, aside from the fact that it took more than two months for the console to get back to me.

Canada, there are two conditions that would have to be met before they'll unlock my account: I reach the age of 18 (which isn't years away but...no thanks), or I send them a form of identification and go through the motions. Both options look to be a pain :l
Lawless, I think it's the UK department of Sony rather than Sony in a general sense. But in my rage I'll just aim it at Sony, lol.

Sorry to hear it, at least you were able to get some help to make it through though, so that's a good thing at least.
Man, I hope it doesn't hit up this way too badly, cause being out of work , flat broke, & no medical or prescription plan, plus a broke-down Harley & my truck which just broke down 3 nights ago too in a shopping center parking lot, and with no money to pay for either the tow or repairs, I don't what I'd do.
And since I've already developed 3 serious medical conditions, diabetes, prostate, & COPD(a lung condition), I'm sure this very bad new strain of flu would do a lot more than just kick my butt for a couple/few of weeks.

not that antivision would ever let it see the light of day, but id be cool to see their wacky cartoony take on it just for some tongue in cheek fun.
its ironic though that he says COD would be no challenge, because, really, brothers in arms has always been a COD wannabee!
exactly why i was so excited when brothers in arms the furious 4 was announced, it looked so cool and creative, like a inglorious bastards game!
sad we havent heard much, and hes put doubts on it ever releasing, and if it did id be very different.
:(
its $E, what do you expect?
there still living in this bubble that the world is a bunch of simplistic morons and thats why there releasing lightning game after lightning game.
kinda makes me think that they dont mind bastardizing this, but they want to keep their other franchises, ie versus and remakes pure.
which is nice to see.
im still hoping will see the HD remake soon, and versus definitive as a next gen launch title.
if $onys smart there will be 4 games they will be tossing the bank at for the ps4s launch.
MGS, monster hunter, GTA, and versus 13.
IF they can get those games to release within say 6 months of launch, its going to fly off the shelves like hotcakes!
O, and a new kingdom hearts would be nice........
but fair warning $E, if you announce 1 more KH game for portables without announcing it for consoles, your going to have a metric sh*t ton of flaming torches to answer too!
really dont understand their obsession with portables, its almost as bad as ninty and pokemon!
oh joy another pokemon has been announced, and surprise surprise its NOT for the wiiu.
sigh.
why is ninty so hell bent on keeping pokemon off consoles?
febs not that full!
we have what, 4 games releasing?
SC4 feb 5, DS3 feb 7, aliens feb 12, C3 feb 22.
not that many!
march as usual is much, much worse!
nice to have so many good games so close, but come on when are publishers going to learn how to use a calendar?
makes me wonder if we really are going to get next gen consoles at E3.
we still have so many games announced for quite a while now, when are they going to release?
i cant see every game announced releasing next year with its next gen counterpart, thats really going to damage next gen systems.
more and more starting to think were not going to see them till next year.
im kinda surprised to see how many really good reviews DMC has been getting.
there was so much doubt and aggression towards it not only from the community but reviewers as well, and all of a sudden its all gone.
why?
maybe the games not so bad after all?
eh, 2 more days and will have our answer.

they did!
they did not just take what 3D realms made and polish it to release quality, so many times randy has said the game 3D realms had created was TOTALLY different to what released!
and it certainly is, go look up some leaked footage shows a totally new level with the old unlimited weapon and GUI of ND3D.
what 3D realms worked on and what actually released were 2 VERY different games!
sad, would of been nice to see what 3D realms had been working on for 10+ years, and ultimately lead to their demise.
but sadly that will never happen.

no they dident go bankrupt because of DNF, they just spent decades working on the game, pouring millions of dollars into it without having any revenue, anything to refill those funds, that had nothing to do with them going bankrupt.

Gearbox has better things to do that develop a CoD game. Theres 3 different devs working on 3 different entries in the series at once. Its already crowded. Plus I like what gearbox is doing, they really are doing great things right now.
PGU:
Well im level capped with my Siren in BL2. Thought about starting with another character but 3 friends I played with we all used different characters so im familiar with them all minus the mechromancer who id rather wait to see if they release another character I possibly like more before spending the money. Needless to say that I am not going to play for now until a level increase comes out because the xp id earn from the remainder of things I have to do and the upcoming dlc would be worthless. So I put the original back in despite having dishonored, lbp karting, dead island and AC3 in my back log.

You see, that's one thing I don't like about these kind of games. It's like the main thing you're trying to do is get more experiance points. I just demand that that ever only be a side thing, with the story (or anything else that drives the experiance, meaningfully) taking precedence. I think the Batman games show a good balance of this.
But yeah this is the main reason I'd never get Skyrim, Borderlands or any kind of RPG that is like this.

Lets just say this. I typically cant play multiple play trough's in games; I have no problem doing this in Borderlands. Its very easy to pick up the game and have a great time, especially when you're playing with friends. There so many elements that make the games interesting.
Ludicrous_Liam -
Well Leveling is a big part of Borderlands, yes, it essentially will determine how you approach your gameplay as well as aid you in survival. But don't get me wrong. I played through the game one time, finished all the side quests, finished both recent expansions, and was I believe level 35-38 after all of that with a level cap of 50. I also did some grinding or "farming" to find weapons which also I gained xp from so I probably had a few extra level gains just from that. My total play time after that was somewhere near 50 hours at least. I didn't hit my level cap until my second play through - after finishing the main story missions for a second time - which I immediately started. It really just depends on how you play, but really you don't have to worry about the level cap while playing especially on your first play through.
The level cap is a good thing though, because you can grind in many rpg's and just make your character too powerful. It keeps the game level to say it best. No pun intended ;). By the time you get to the end of the game, you're just cruising through with no challenge, so it potentially prevents that. By the way that never happened to me, Borderlands 2 was definitely a challenge at times through out the game.
But to be honest their is a lot of elements that make playing this game a blast, its not based around leveling. The loot system, the co-op system, the leveling of course, they all play a large part in the game. I wouldn't shy away from it because leveling plays a large part in the experience.
There is tons of incentive to play it from the replay value, to the different ways to build any of the 5 characters, to the co op, loot, questing, and gameplay its worth the experience.

Man, i never wanted to see the day where SE became this. I played some KH last week and my god, what happened to them? What happened to the incredible games they delivered? I know Hitman was published by square but it wasn't developed (as far as i know) and the fact their starting to turn FFX Hd into a new FFvs13? Talk about a big downer. Its like falling in love with a girl who just gives and gives. Then she started menopause and everything changed. SE, lets hope something rises out of the ashes because at this point in time, your losing your larger fanbase, the playstation crowd.
personal gaming update: the pokemon thing died down so i've been free to play whatever i please. Sadly enough, someone broke into my house so i had to move. I was home when he broke in and hes damn lucky my girl wasn't home otherwise i might be in prison for murder. No one puts my family in danger. Anyway... I forgot about Way of the Samurai 4. Wanna play a game with all of the japanese LOL-ness? yeah, they kept all of the humor and seriousness that the previous 3 had. Really loving it. The DLC is a downer though, because its obviously in the game. But is only unlocked by buying it. I've also been playing bf2 again.
Dunno why, but i prefer it over bf3. Maybe because im not getting owned by a godamned tank every ten seconds haha. Been playing saints row 2 as well. Made a fat smiling chinese man. He drives a purple, gold, and pink mustang. Hes got giant pink glasses and everything. Anyway im starting to blabber, hope everyone has a warm week.

My vita card kinda crashed on me. Not sure what happened, but now I have to redownload FFVII and start all over. I also lost my finished save for Liberation. That was a bit a let down to an already demoralizing week. So I installed Gravity Rush and decided to start in on that masterpiece. Xcom is wonderful. I'm glad I can say I own a genuine RTS now.
Lets hope next week goes better than my memory card did last week.

So I though damn son, I'll stick to the rooftops. NOOO. Even creeping up to get a listen at people who can't see me somehow means my position on the roof is compromised by all available troops and bam they mobilize a team to kill me.
Might have to give up on that one too, it like won't let me do anything within the realm of reason so I can't get anywhere.

Sunday, January 13, 2013 @ 6:05:00 AM
I try to go stealthy, but the thing is, it's SO easy to get spotted on the rooftops, and then once you're seen, one of the guards comes over to you. Alright, no problem - just leave for a few seconds - but the thing is, their 'route' will now be out of sync with the other guards. This makes it impossible to take them out stealthly, as when you go to take him out, you'll be spotted by the other guards.
Seems like they didn't build this game with the stealth element at the foremost of it's design, because I can rarely get through a mission without swinging my axe into the heads of atleast 20 guards, lol.

Sunday, January 13, 2013 @ 10:42:31 AM
I suggest getting good at the combat and just brawling...after all assassins don't have to be stealthy they just need to kill :P
Also if your notoriety level is incognito this wont happen, so make sure you don't have any posters of you up or anything.
I'm digging aspects of the game but I think its lacking polish in a lot of areas, it could have used some more time in the cooker. I also know that open world games of that scale are hard to release bug free and polished to a shine but still there are some things that just seem overlooked.

Again don't worry about AC3, there is nothing wrong with your playstyle. I'm somewhat of a veteran of stealth games and it gives me trouble sometimes too so don't beat yourself up :P

Firstly, the guards will not care what you do if you're incognito. You can sprint through crowds of citizens all day long and no guard will care. They will care if you're on the rooftops but if you just keep running by them, provided you don't run THROUGH them, they'll only be on caution (yellow) and won't bother you.
Second, there's most certainly not only one way to do a mission stealthily. Doing the full synch for missions were you don't get spotted requires timing and there is some trial and error, but it isn't that hard. It also doesn't count if a guard sees you and goes caution; they have to go red. You typically have plenty of time to get to a hiding spot when they go yellow provided you're not right on top of them.
Third, it sounds like none of you are experimenting with tools like smoke bombs, nor are you training and using your assassin buddies. There's more to AC than just sneaking around with your hidden blade, which usually isn't enough.

Well right now I'm playing AC3 and enjoying it mostly. I do wish the stealth system was a little more solid and there are certainly some areas that lack polish but its overall pretty good.
On the PC I'm enjoying Torchlight 2 a lot. It is just so fantastic and for 20 bucks it is a steal. It is what Diablo 3 should have been and honestly the best ARPG I have played probably ever. I seriously hope they get it on consoles for you guys to play. Even still if anyone has a computer try out the demo, it runs well on really low end systems and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes ARPGs.
Still playing Dota 2 and the game just keeps opening up its layers of depth to me. I never thought I would like that game as much as I do because I hate RTS games and thought MOBAs were just watered down RTS games. I was totally wrong.

The graphics are nice, the spell effects are awesome and colourful, and it is just satisfying to smack monsters.
The only other aRPG that comes close to it in my opinion is Titan Quest, which to me is still better than D3 :P
I think Torchlight 2 is better than Titan quest for the replay value though, and I like the art stlye and for 20 bucks....man you can't beat it. I also paid half that on a steam sale so it feels even more of a steal :D
Let me know when you play it and we can try and get some multiplayer going :)

I'm not into FF, Ni no Kuni, and DMC, so I really don't have any comments of them, either way, except to say I hope everyone gets what they want out of them.
My own PGU....
Still playing Deus Ex:Human Revolution's Augmented Edition & thanks to "World" & "Lawless" for their tips, I finally succeeded in beating that big bast*rd, Barret
***Spoiler alert***
Although I had to do Barret in a slightly different way since I had only 3 rounds of ammo left & didn't possess any of the Typoon augments.
So after another 27 more tries since the tips, I finally got his butt!
I just tried to keep out of his line of sight & then hit him in this order, with......
1 EMP,
1 Fire extinguisher,
1 toxic gas cylinder,
1 fire extinguisher,
1 toxic gas cylinder,
1 fire extinguisher,
then I topped it all off with 1 explosive barrel.
So now I've made all the way to Montreal & into the Picus Corp.
Anyway, thanks to the surveys I do that get me $25 Gamestop gift cards 4X a year, I had about $42 left on my cards, so I was able to pick up COD's MW2, & Rango.
I'll be playing MW3 right after I'm all done with DE:HR, but I did sample a bit of Rango last night.
And even though it's probably more for a younger generation than for one of us 60 year olds, I found that it instilled the feeling of a "lil kid" back in me all over again & I was really digging it.
Besides, some of the dialog that comes out of that chameleon's mouth is hilarious.
So I'll probably be playing Rango in quick spurts between games, or whenever I need an extra light-sided comical boost to my funny-bone.
Now it's back to DE:HR for me once again......
